Cheney: “In the fight against terrorism, there is no middle ground”

Actually, there is a middle ground; the point of the torture memos was finding it. That’s the only note that’s a tiny bit off here, though. Read the full transcript at the Standard, as there’s so much to enjoy about this speech that everyone’s bound to have a different favorite moment. For Frum, it was Cheney calling Obama out for covering up information about whether the interrogations worked. For me, it’s the second half of the clip you’re about to see. For others, it’ll be his mockery of the media intoning sanctimoniously about jihadists “abducted” from the battlefield by U.S. troops or his reminder that terrorists don’t need pretexts like Gitmo or waterboarding to attack the U.S. — a timely point given the arrest last night of those NYC plotters outraged by the war in Afghanistan.
It won’t surprise you to know that his approval rating, while still negative, has started to rise ever since he started his media tour. It’s a shame Bush didn’t use him as more of a mouthpiece on this subject over the last few years of his administration: Dour though his Darth Cheney persona may be, he projects gravitas and speaks with understated eloquence. He’s bound to persuade at least a few fencesitters.
Update: In hindsight, wasn’t it awfully stupid of The One to rush out a national security speech to try to preempt Cheney? If he’d kept quiet, this still would have been a hit on righty blogs and Fox News but nowhere else. By jumping in, he created the sensational “terror duel” storyline that’s forcing the media to magnify this. At the very least, he should have waited a week or so and then given his speech as a rebuttal to Cheney’s. For someone so message-savvy, he crapped the bed this time.

Every day the Democrats come off more and more as nagging wives.

It needed to be delineated? Pick a thread with him it, and invariably, he’s being stupid.
I didn’t get to say goodbye :(

If anybody wants to know the TRUTH-listen to Cheney. Every nitwit that had his underwear twisted foaming at the mouth for Cheney to be led away in handcuffs, don’t you feel foolish now. Not only has Cheney made you look as stupid as you are, but Obama can’t even begin to compete with him. Obama looks like a little school boy brat!

No lie. I’ll never understand why Bush refused to fight back…I suspect Cheney wanted too, but was muzzled.

I almost agree with that. Change “tortured” to “used enhanced interrogation techniques” and we’ve got some common ground.

I think Bush didn’t want to seem egotistical by defending himself. But Cheney understands that it’s not about ego, it’s about right and wrong.
But listen to Obama harp on how he, personally, because of his upbringing, has the tools to fix this, and I can understand Bush’s concern.

I think this may have actually hurt Barry. Cheney got much more press and exposure because Barry tried to 1up him. Barry failed. Miserably.

Cheney speaks.
America listens.
Logic trumps ignorance.
Steele, Palin, Jindal, Romney should be so fortunate to apprentice with Cheney; request an organized conference on what all went down with regards to what is happening now because of what is coming.
Learning how to speak with authority separates the leaders from those led. The platform of truth trumps propaganda gimmicks when tested under fire.
VP Cheney, thank you.

Cheney was excellent today. Obama looked totally out of his league. But let’s not all go bonkers and think that it would be at all wise to nominate Cheney in 2012.
We still need new faces and Cheney is perfect just where he is in his role of pit bull!

“Obama is clever. He knows that the American public hates Cheney.”
Really? I think you missed Allah’s point:
“If he’d kept quiet, this still would have been a hit on righty blogs and Fox News but nowhere else.”
Besides, isn’t BO really giving justification for keeping the same Bush policy? What the Bush administration did was bad, but my administration has to follow the same bad course because the Bush admin. didn’t think this through? So what is BO saying? He hasn’t thought this through either? Yeh, clever.

Cheney 2012!
God that would be beautiful. The lefties heads would explode.
Joe Caps on May 21, 2009 at 3:11 PM
I don’t think anyone is suggesting that. Would I have liked to see Cheney in the 2008 primaries? Probably.
lorien1973 on May 21, 2009 at 3:11 PM
Pronoun trouble? He [Obama or Cheney?] clearly sides with those who wish to kill Americans? I agree that Obama sides with terrorists, if that’s what you mean.
Cheney heavily criticized Obama and the administration and called their actions stupid, petty, reckless, and irresponsible. So there was some dueling going on in Cheney’s speech.
Slightly off topic (or maybe not): I would love to see Obama’s college records. I bet his work in college would be very revealing about his hatred for the USA.
Daggett on May 21, 2009 at 3:12 PM
I read the entire speech. I have always been a Cheney fan. I firmly believe that the safety of Americans has to come first. And I believe that is one of the very few jobs the federal government should be doing. Not taking over companies, not backing banks, not dishing millions to states, not even education, no thanks to welfare, and everything else that are the mandatory programs that Obama is expanding. Keep the people free and safe.
Tremmy on May 21, 2009 at 3:13 PM
Obama is having a LOUSY day. The WH press corp went after him big time. One of my favorite questions: Obama kept telling us he was going to be a departure from the finger-pointing of the past, but in his speech, he pointed the finger at Bush 12, 15 times.
Honeymoon’s over.

Dick Cheney – the adult in the room.
I’m happy he’s speaking out. He was kept quiet (mostly) for eight years. It’s his turn to speak.
Oink on May 21, 2009 at 3:15 PM
Yeah, it’s a fantasy…if for no other reason than his health…he needs to take care of himself health wise now.
But he’s a great model for Republican candidates to study and emulate.
AUINSC on May 21, 2009 at 3:16 PM
I have to agree. Speaking last in a debate is always an advantage–and tthere’s no doubt that this is a debate.
The One is not really message-savvy, IMO, he’s just so egotistical he thinks he’ll always come out ahead. It’s going to be wild to see what happens when reality finally hits him.
INC on May 21, 2009 at 3:17 PM
I hope that a few more conservatives understand Cheney’s real message here. This was a teaching moment. He is showing the courage of his convictions by standing up to gumby and his posse … something the rest of the Republicans need to do instead of trying to make nice and continuing to allow the left wing pols and their media sycophants lies and obfuscations to go unchallenged.

In some things perhaps this is true. However, this speech should have been made long before today. The liberals have been able to shape public opinion partly due to the Bush administration’s silence on our success in the War on Terror.
New faces of the GOP should learn from this and not repeat this mistake, in my opinion.
Successes can be spoken of without revealing state secrets.

One thing I just thought of re: my comment that the last person in a debate has an advantage. The One has not been through enough grueling debates to know this. There’s nothing like experience and losing a few to gain some understanding. When you’re way has been paved by the Chicago machine and the Dems, you’re a little short on some of these things.
INC on May 21, 2009 at 3:22 PM
We shouldn’t forget that even as Cheney spoke during the Bush presidency, the media would not relay his message; rather, THEIRS. When Bush spoke, his message was ALWAYS rejected as well.
I’m glad Cheney’s voice is not gagged now.

HornetSting on May 21, 2009 at 3:29 PM
Hubris in action — Since they talk only amongst themselves and like-minded individuals, like the White House press corps, the Obama staff believes everyone out there who matters will immediately discount anything Cheney says because he’s evil, while everyone will believe everything Obama says because he’s The One. So by staging a preemptive strike, they get the big media outlets to do their normal hit pieces on the former VP.
Might have worked if this was January, but Obama’s arguing based on his record now, not on hypotheticals over what he’s going to do versus what Bush and Cheney had done. And the CIA-Pelosi kerfuffle doesn’t help Barack’s national security argument.

How many jihadists were “tortured” by the U.S. prior to their attack on the World Trade Center on 9/ll?
A. None
B. None
C. None
This whole “torture made us less safe” is a pile of dung concocted by the surrender monkey Democrats.
How many times did the jihadists attack the U.S. after we started throwing their sorry butts into Gitmo and ramped up our interrogation techniques?
A. None
B. None
C. None
When will the jihadists attack the U.S. again now that Ogabe has exposed all of our interrogation techniques and has let it me known we will handle them with kid gloves and give them a fair trial?
A. Sooner
B. Later
C. All of the above

Even considering the president’s cult like following, it is hard to imagine that we would come off well in the comparison with VP Cheney. It’s like setting a bicylce with training wheels next to a Harley Davidson. A pink bike at that.
Cindy Munford on May 21, 2009 at 3:46 PM
Did anyone watch O’Reilly last night? They showed footage of Obama, with Netenyahu, at a press conference. Netenyahu, was sitting forward leaning on the edge of his seat, looking directly at Obama, as Obama spoke. Obama was speaking, sitting slumped back in his chair, not making eye contact with Netenyahu. Even though he was right next to him, and talking about him.
That spoke volumes to me, right there. Obama was way out of his league, against this seasoned, wiser, man. That may have played a part, in Obama’s rush, to get a speech out, that he thought would challenge, Cheney.
Some challenges should just be kept under the rug, Obama. Give it a few years, or 20, and you MIGHT have the same wisdom, and seasoned experience. But only when you get past your own bloated ego.
