Beck doubles down: You owe me an apology, Barbara Walters!

I don’t blame him for being angry if he thinks he was wronged on national television (although if he was, why didn’t he pound the table about it yesterday?), but I can’t help laughing at this anyway as an example of one of the dumbest celebrity feuds ever to hit American media. Remember, the whole crux of this increasingly angry dispute is with whether Whoopi’s and Barbara’s Amtrak seats were reserved or not. Given Beck’s, er, eccentricities, I can only hope we’re in store for a Queeg-like demonstration on his show this afternoon, replete with animated simulation, that the seats were reserved and that they could only have been reserved. Will Whoopi and Barbara respond tomorrow? Stay tuned for the developing Amtrakgate scandal! Click the image to listen.

Wrong
Correct.
AP’s take is wrong as well. Beck told the Amtack story several days ago with the take-away being Beck thought the reserved seats were being held for someone “important” like Biden. Turned out Whoopie and Walters came over and sat down. The brief interaction between Beck and Walters didn’t matter a whit.

Compared to the other three, Elisabeth is a child. It’s too easy for them to talk over her and, when she does get to talk, to pooh pooh her comments as inexperienced and naive. The wrinkly ones are using her to buttress their own sense of superiority. The View was a good starter job for her, but she should have moved out and up a long time ago.
Dee2008 on May 21, 2009 at 5:24 PM
I was actually pretty surprised at how hostile Barbara was to Glenn on The View. It seemed like such a petty dispute for her to be so angry about. I don’t get what’s behind that. Seems like there’s more to the story.
jonezee on May 21, 2009 at 5:26 PM
In the circles Ms Walters runs in, she’s treated like royalty. She’s a NewsDiva
dts-01 on May 21, 2009 at 5:34 PM
I watched more of the show that day than I care to admit. But during an earlier segment before Beck came on, Elizabeth was trying to argue with Whoopdeedo (about Pelosi maybe?), and Bawbwa Wawa decided she didn’t want to hear anymore, so she put her hand over Elizabeth’s mouth.
How F’ing rude those womyn are.

Seriously? I would of bit, hard…and then say don’t you dare to ever silence me again.
Conservative Voice on May 21, 2009 at 5:51 PM
It seems the saying is true…never let a crisis go to waste. I see three types of posters
1. The people who are tools for the left and see this as an opportunity to take Glenn down a notch, they aren’t interested in reality.
2. The people who are tools for the right who think Glenn should of played the role of Rambo and mowed them down.
3. People who are fans of Glenn and who know how he goes out if his way to be as honest and fair to everyone.
Personally I hate the view…same reason I am not a fan of Bill O. Its a shouting match about nothing…if I wanted to see grown adults shout each other irrationally, I would watch Jerry Springer.
Glenn didn’t lie. The Coven were using this as a tactic to take him off the game, because they don’t have the mental ability to debate him on real issues.
Conservative Voice on May 21, 2009 at 5:59 PM
I noticed that too. I think Whoopi and Barbara mischaracterized Beck… or in their own words….lied.
She didn’t like being mocked. Beck used his stupid mocking voice. That is maddening for someone to do that… but really… it isn’t like she hasn’t been mocked before.
petunia on May 21, 2009 at 5:59 PM
I think Beck would laugh at that. He isn’t on a team. That is actually his point… So part of the time we should agree with him and part of the time we should curse him.
petunia on May 21, 2009 at 6:02 PM
Any conservative has to be nuts to go on the set with those harpies.

There was a part of the show, where the audience clapped to what Glenn was saying. He wasn’t going for Walters, Joy, or Whoopie’s benefit.

Is there anyone who doesn’t think the liberal women on The View are anything but conspiring, conniving and disingenuous?
Speakup on May 21, 2009 at 6:29 PM
Elizabeth is supposed to supply ‘the balance’ to the rest of the harpies. Bring on laura, heck, any Conservative woman who can speak her mind. This Gammy in rural TN could provide a better/louder counterpoint, more effectively debated than a meek mild one. Perhaps it’s her pregnancy that is forcing her to be ineffective in her opposition??? With maternity leave coming up one must hold tight to a secure job….such are the standards these days.
dustoffmom on May 21, 2009 at 6:30 PM
Deciding to appear on The View=Schooled (as in, taught a lesson). How could Beck not expect to be blindsided and mistreated on The View? Also, why help their ratings?
chipandcharge on May 21, 2009 at 6:32 PM
There’s not enough Huckabee one liners to get yourself out of that mess Beck.
Just what the hell did you think would happen with that pack fat ass liberal bitches.
try again later on May 21, 2009 at 6:32 PM
That actually makes sense…kudos.
jerrytbg on May 21, 2009 at 6:33 PM
Exactly my point from my first comment here! Don’t you know WHO I AM and how dare you contradict me in any way!!!!This little piece of slime on my shoe dares to question my right to a ‘reserved’ seat?
dustoffmom on May 21, 2009 at 6:33 PM
Except that he didn’t say she called him over, nishi. DON’T YOU CHECK YOUR FACTS, LIAR!?!?!???
Pablo on May 21, 2009 at 6:33 PM
Imagine the horror if they’d asked him what newspapers and magazines he reads.
benny shakar on May 21, 2009 at 6:40 PM
Seems to me he approached them, invited or not, after being informed he could not occupy the particular seats and “would be THRILLED’ once he realized who would be sitting there. I think I would have been reaching for the oxygen once they appeared…and never thought of being gracious and speaking for fear of passing out….but hey, that’s just me. Sounds to me like he was much more of a gentleman given the circumstances than those hoity toity bitches could dream of accepting. But then again, I am just a southern conservative set in my ways so take it with a grain of sale.
dustoffmom on May 21, 2009 at 6:41 PM
Sorry to disappoint AP, nothing on the show this afternoon about it. He did mention during the webcast after the show that he had a nice phone call with the dreadlocked dike today but didn’t provide details
conservnut on May 21, 2009 at 6:47 PM
As was pointed out here yesterday: Glenn uses a far worse voice when doing his wife. Wait. You know what I mean…lol He does voices for all sorts of people. He has Olberdork down pat.
bikermailman on May 21, 2009 at 7:06 PM
I didn’t watch the clip. I don’t really care to.
I will just say this. I like Beck. I guess more than alot of people here. That said…I don’t have alot of sympathy for any conservative that goes on these nimrod shows expecting to be nicey nicey.
If you go on, go on to let some blood flow. Skewer these jackels, rip the throats out and then look at the camera with a bloodied mouth and spit the chunk at it.
Seriously….you go on..go on to fight! If not..don’t cry like a weenie about it later.
Handel on May 21, 2009 at 7:17 PM
Part of me wishes I could go on the View. I don’t have a career that I’m worried about Joy Behar and Barbara Walters ruining.
jimmy2shoes on May 21, 2009 at 7:34 PM
Awesome advice!
On another note, we need to stop giving those yentas any more occupation of our thoughts. They don’t have anything substantial to say.
threeCents on May 21, 2009 at 7:42 PM
You don’t spread the message by preaching to the choir. It’s not his fault they’re assholes.
Jim Treacher on May 21, 2009 at 7:47 PM
Imagine the horror if you had to come up with a new reference.
Jim Treacher on May 21, 2009 at 7:48 PM
It’s very simple. We need to stop pretending that the View is anything other than the bitching hour. And no man, unless he’s a “feminist,” is going to walk away with his ‘nads intact.
Nuff said.
Tennman on May 21, 2009 at 7:49 PM
Quite the contrary, Allah’s done well.
Glenn Beck is a ratings bonanza regardless of how anyone sees this non-issue. One of the best ways to get more publicity is to pick a fight, I don’t believe that Mr Beck purposely did so, but the effect is the same – free marketing. This is something Frum has been trying to do with Limbaugh and has failed miserably.
Good job Mr Beck.

The only thing royal about Walters is how much of a royal pain in the ass she really is! The woman is a legend in her own mind diva-extreme who thinks that she is the greatest thing to happen to journalism since the invention of the printing press! To quote Glen Beck, BULLCRAP!
pilamaye on May 21, 2009 at 9:15 PM
Perhaps he was shocked and at a loss. Perhaps he wanted to check the tape to be certain of what he’d said. Maybe it was because he wasn’t as sharp as normal because we KNOW that he was sick. I know I’m not all there when sick.
But my real beef here continues to be with you, AP…
Allah, I had started to believe you that you didn’t have some personal vendetta against Beck (as I’d begun to expect after your constant mocking of him), but your reporting on this matter is either deliberately dishonest or sadly incorrect.
No, as I tried to explain to you yesterday the whole calling Beck a liar fiasco was all based on who approached who first, as it pertains to Beck and Walters. That’s it. The ladies were accusing him of lying by saying that Walters addressed him first. But as I pointed out yesterday HE DIDN’T TALK ABOUT WHO ADDRESSED WHO FIRST AT ALL. He quoted what Barbara said to him, but didn’t say or sneakily attempt to insinuate that she spoke up first. AS IF THAT WOULD EVEN MATTER!?
The whole “reserved seats” thing had nothing to do with it. Sure, the ladies deny it, but they weren’t calling him a liar for that, because he was simply claiming that he was TOLD this, and that he was surprised because you can’t reserve Amtrak seats.
Again, I can only hope you’re just making a boneheaded mistake here. That isn’t great, but it’s better than if you’re being deliberately dishonest to smear Beck for some mystery reason.
RightWinged on May 21, 2009 at 9:28 PM
Barbara WahWah is important why????
oakpack on May 21, 2009 at 10:54 PM
Nice thought, unfortunately you can’t get your message heard when they will not allow you to speak.
Any conservative that agrees to go on one of these shows, whether it be this one, or Matthews, or any other propaganda organ for the democratic party, will never be allowed to have any more than 5 seconds of uninterrupted speech. Unless you go on these shows ready to shout them down, then don’t bother.

Jim Treacher on May 22, 2009 at 12:17 AM
What does Beck expect? Leftists lie, it’s what they do, it’s ALL they do.
nelsonknows on May 22, 2009 at 12:28 AM
The more to the story is that Barbara, Trump and O’Reilly are all good friends, they dine together and are out and about in the city frequently. And Glenn went and stuck his foot in his mouth.
I am sure O’Reilly will let him have it behind the scenes.
Far Left lies – Far Right lies – same nuthouse, different patient – yet the same.
AprilOrit on May 22, 2009 at 12:43 AM
Wow, LEAVE GLENN ALONE!
But seriously damn, I didn’t think so many people would pick on Glenn over who came over to who. I could understand if he said he saved twenty kids from a burning fire but actually didn’t but come on.
Sadly, I don’t think anyone here can do a better job on The View. We’d be eaten alive. You need experience.
Trov on May 22, 2009 at 1:42 AM
Handel on May 21, 2009 at 7:17 PM = RIGHTEOUS!!!!
Hey RightWinged, wipe the spittle off your mouth and get a grip. Our differing views, likes and dislikes and our ability to discuss it rationally are what sets this forum apart from most in the ’sphere. So AP dose not like beck, he probably has a reason for it. I’ve been a fan of Glenn for years, but do not always like what he has to say. Writing someone off as stupid or or intentionally misleading just because you disagree is the tactic of the weasels, not the the humans.
superstretch on May 22, 2009 at 1:52 AM
Well, if he’s like most of us, who get our news from virtually everywhere, he’d give the same answer Palin gave — “All of them.”
Pythagoras on May 22, 2009 at 1:59 AM
None of this makes we want to watch the view. But, I am interested to hear more of what Glenn has to say about it.
I bet this helps Glenn more than it helps the harpies. Hey, Rush was on his show today! You know, Rush Limbaugh. The guy that MSNBC can’t stop talking about in an attempt to help their craptastic ratings.
DWB on May 22, 2009 at 3:03 AM
Many people on this thread have done just that. Now it’s your turn, lefty — talk to your hero Barack the Zero about his cavernous deficits.
L.N. Smithee on May 22, 2009 at 8:10 AM
During the View, Beck allowed himself to be sidetracked and put on defensive. If he’d pounded on the table yesterday, he wouldn’t be in this pickle today.
What other explanation could there be, other than Walters-Goldberg had arranged for those seats to be saved for them. Walters was embarrassed to be caught at it, so she launched an offense against Beck as her best defense.
petefrt on May 22, 2009 at 8:16 AM
Or sat by tittering as Joy mocked whichever conservative was the topic of discussion to the delight of her overenthusiastic fans.
If you’re interested in seeing a rare instance in which Elisabeth Hasselbeck schools Walters, Behar, and Sherri Shepherd, click here.
L.N. Smithee on May 22, 2009 at 8:18 AM
I understand a lot of folks would disagree, but I’ve long thought she isn’t strong enough for that job, an almost impossible one for sure. She’s being used to lend the pretense of balance, to strengthen the authority of the wrinkly ones, and I wish she’d move on.
petefrt on May 22, 2009 at 8:27 AM
He already has a reputation among liberals on cable as a maniac. The fact is, he just refuses to tone down his radio act for TV. There weren’t too many people that cared when he was languishing on CNN Headline News. Now he’s on Fox kicking MSN-Bootay and has a target on his back.
Bad as it turned out, things would have been exponentially worse if he showed any genuine anger at the table.
L.N. Smithee on May 22, 2009 at 8:33 AM
Okay, point well taken. Maybe not genuine anger. Feigned outrage at being charged with that lie (and then sticking to the issue of reserved seats) would suffice.
petefrt on May 22, 2009 at 8:40 AM
What’s obvious is that AP has some real problems with Beck. Fair enough, but that colors his commentary (”Queeg-like demonstration”?) and renders his assessments suspect at best.
SKYFOX on May 22, 2009 at 8:50 AM
AP’s posts are increasingly annoying. There are lots of conservative blogs out there….
rcw on May 22, 2009 at 9:19 AM
Wouldn’t it be funny if this truned out to be a misunderstanding? LOL
What if AmTrak did get word that some Senator was going to need a seat and needed secret service protection. Then they did not get away in time and missed the train or something along those lines. Next Bawba and Whoops came in and sat down. And by the time they got there the conductor knew he couldn’t hold a seat any longer.
Why hasn’t anyone asked Amtrak to respond?
jeffn21 on May 22, 2009 at 9:36 AM
He’s bold and brave alone with his mike. :)
What a dweeb.
AnninCA on May 22, 2009 at 9:51 AM
I really don’t think Glenn was prepared to be called a liar about who called who over. He was trying to apologize about the voice he used on the radio for Barbara (which, if you ask me, was about dead on). He got roped into conceding the “called who over part” because he was willing to concede and let them have that, if it would just go away – but they just dogpiled him, and he just was not prepared for that.
This was an ambush all the way, and Glenn’s not the person to call 4 women liars on a show he was invited to be on. However, these CLASSLESS women are ridiculous. He should have known he was going to be treated like trash. Personally, I think he should have went with them with both barrels, but he was in one of those positions where he’s trying to be nice, cordial, and wants to have a civil conversation with them about things that matter, and they’re attacking him about inconsequential things. His head was spinning so freaking fast…
charlie36r on May 22, 2009 at 10:17 AM
So let’s just keep talking to ourselves. Great idea, it’s been working fine so far.
And some viewers who are on the fence will see it and say, “Why are they doing that? Let the man speak!” It’s not optimal, but it’s something.
Jim Treacher on May 22, 2009 at 10:57 AM
Tell that to the ACORN guy.
Jim Treacher on May 22, 2009 at 10:58 AM
To make that statement, you must not have listened to or watched Glenn Beck much, if at all.
MoCoM on May 22, 2009 at 2:08 PM
Yes. That has been readily apparent on a few subjects that he apparently doesn’t like. You read his comments, then you watch the video…then you wonder what the agenda is. The comments often do not at all reflect on the event.
MoCoM on May 22, 2009 at 2:17 PM
In the days of the “Fairness Doctrine,” my exposure to conservative (not just Republican) thought was limited to James Kirkpatrick on 60 Minutes‘ “Point/Counterpoint” segment that was lampooned on SNL by Dan Aykroyd and Jane Curtin (”Jane, you ignorant slut!”), John Lofton, and whichever over-the-top lunatic Phil Donahue would dig up to balance his panel, such as a “men’s rights advocate” who would wear a skirt. Other than that, anyone right-of-center speaking forthrightly and intelligently at length was almost unheard other than on Sunday mornings, if you cared to get up early to watch. Most were misinformed by buffoonish strawmen in Norman Lear sitcoms like All in The Family, Maude, etc.
I’m sure that the other four panelists were shocked that Hasselbeck’s diet book debuted at #2 on the NYT Hardcover Advice Bestseller list. And pissed, because it means people actually listen to her.
