Video: What Charlie Crist Is Up Against
posted at 12:31 pm on May 20, 2009 by The Other McCain
If you want to know why the NRSC’s endorsement of Charlie Crist in the Florida Senate race was such a stupid move, watch Marco Rubio‘s farewell speech to the Florida House of Representatives:
Everybody who’s watched the video is asking the same question: Why in the world would John Cornyn and the NRSC want to back Charlie Crist against this guy?
Carol of No Sheeples Here posted that video at Not One Red Cent the other day, and then Pat at So It Goes In Shreveport posted it. And then it was seen by Moe Lane of Red State:
I’ve been personally staying out of the entire Crist/Rubio NRSC endorsement brouhaha, mostly because we’re going to have Senatorial candidates that are going to need the NRSC’s help — but I do have to ask: does Charlie have anything that can beat that?Seriously. Does Crist play at that level?
It’s that good, and Rubio’s not speaking from a Teleprompter, either. He rips the hide off the ball and puts it in the parking lot.
Even though some of the rhetorical content isn’t my cup of tea (I got a bellyful of Michael Gerson-style ‘Let’s Save The World’ treacle during the past eight years) Rubio’s patriotic passion makes it work. And when he says, “God is real,” well . . .
Update (AP): This sounds like a job for pessimism pundit! Crist leads Rubio by fully 35 points in the first poll taken, thanks mainly to Rubio’s lack of name recognition. That’ll change, of course, as the campaign wears on, but with first the NRSC and now McCain lining up behind Crist, this is a tall mountain for Rubio to climb. Still a good idea to run, though: The higher his profile gets, the better positioned he is to challenge Bill Nelson for Florida’s other seat when it comes up in 2012.
If you missed it in Headlines, read the open letter to the NRSC signed by several prominent righty bloggers (including our own Ed Morrissey) urging Cornyn and company to mind their own business when it comes to primaries.

True, but Rubio has better than a puncher’s chance at ’10. With 17 months to go before polls open, I’m not really sweating name recognition, either. Not only did Crist tour the state with Obama in order to help sell Porkulus, he went on the record as saying he would’ve voted for it had he been in the Senate. Forget the abortive Specter v. Toomey primary. This is where the Big Red Machine comes back!

I wished Crist would’ve waited and challenged Nelson in 2012. The guy isn’t that popular and Crist could’ve kept his options open for the presidency or senate. I’m supporting Rubio b/c he’ll be a GOP star if election, and Crist can then start preparing his 2012 senate bid!
Also, Rubio would’ve been a great gov candidate, but McCollum will beat Sink.

I have no comment about the NSRC’s hopelessly absurd ineptitude. Unreal. They should be embracing Rubio with open arms as EXACTLY the kind of candidate to lead the next conservative revolution. His background is incredible. His ascent remarkable. His is a story worth telling and embracing.
Okay, I guess I lied. I did have a comment.

Rubio talks a good game…but Crist has both experience, and is still very popular among Florida voters.
I would fully expect Crist to come out ahead of Rubio by at least 10 points. Not that Rubio is a bad guy, it’s just that Crist will be more apt to get things done, and be a power player in Washington.

According to a poll by the North West Florida Daily News 79% of those polled would not support Crist. Keeping in mind the their readers are mostly from the Panhandle couple that with the Cuban population in the southern part of the state I think Crist is the one would may have an uphill battle. The vast majority of Floridians do not trust him due to his support of the stimilus.

Grunt on May 20, 2009 at 1:26 PM
Maybe it is just me, but the more I watch the Republicans, to me anyway, it seems that the struggle within the Republican party is not so much between the conservatives and the moderates but rather the Old Guard and the New Kids on the Block.
Recently there have been a bunch of younger and more conservative members of the Republican party getting their 15 minutes of fame and in a lot of ways I am beginning to think the old white guys don’t like the idea of being forced into retirement. They need to take their gold watches, give a nice speech, accept the gratitude of the people for job well done and fade into the history books.
Look at the young faces. They are female, Indian, Cuban and African American, and far more conservative then their predecessors, which puts a big dent in the liberals argument of the Republicans being a party of old white guys. Anybody looked at the Democrats lately? Half of them are either in the hospital or pending hospice care.
I think soon the Republicans are going to have to choose between the young or the old. No McCains need apply.

Cindy Munford on May 20, 2009 at 1:31 PM
Crist is popular among LIBERAL Florida voters, conservatives are not happy with him.
This is my part of the state and is so Republican that most Democrats don’t even bother to campaign here. With that said, I don’t know anyone who is happy with Crist. He was pretty conservative before he became Governor. Once he got into the Governor’s mansion, he morphed into a RINO, kind of like Schwarzenegger did.
Rubio is getting my vote, although maybe he should aim for U.S. Representative or even Governor first. Unfortunately, too many people from New Jersey, New York, and Michigan have moved to Florida in the last 10 years and they brought their Blue ideology with them. It is hypocritical how they flee their home states because of taxes, then move down here and expect Florida to turn more liberal like the state they left.

fudgypup on May 20, 2009 at 1:35 PM
As many of us predicted, Crist is everything that is wrong with the Repub party and the “supposed” moderates that support him. He represents big spending and ever bigger government.
These supposed moderates continue to create hobgoblins/strawmen on why we should vote for fiscal rhinos(Collins, Snowe, Specter etc). They live in Hillary’s vast right wing conspiracy world. If you agree that the Repub core values are fiscal restraint and small government in all things then you are part of the “extreme right wing” hijacking the party.
You will notice that the moderates, except a few like Giuliani, all favor big spending/government and rationalize it by saying it is for better projects, ie it is not Reid/Pelosi Democratic spending. At the end of the day however the government and debt continue to grow.
Crist the ultimate example even campaigned with Obama. God willing he will go down to defeat.

“God has never met a human being that He doesn’t love, and He never will.”
Absolutely beautiful statement. That is the perfect summary of the Christian faith (not the intolerant, closed minded version the media likes to portray).
Personally, I don’t want any more power players in Washington. I want to see the power structure in Washington dismantled. I’m tired of seeing promising, idealistic individuals going to that cesspool and slowly being corrupted into power brokers, trading favors, negotiating with socialists, and spending our liberty like currency.
I don’t want someone to go to Washington to “do more”. I want to see their power taken away from them and returned to the states and the people where it belongs. Then I want Washington to be in charge of their Constitutional responsibilities and nothing more.
As long as Washington holds this much power and control over free markets and wealth, it will be corrupt. It doesn’t need to be changed, it needs to be eliminated as the place where all decisions are made and all policy is created.
TheMightyMonarch on May 20, 2009 at 1:40 PM
I find it beyond mystifying why the RNC, who is constantly saying with little evidence, that they want new blood and new, fresh, ideas on how to be more “relevant”. Just yesterday Steele said we needed to be “relevant” in the current times. WELL HELLO MR. STEELE! HERE IS MR. RELEVANT! HIS NAME IS RUBIO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The husband and I have discussed going down to Florida to help out Mr. Rubio after we get the yutes settled in college. We are not for just wishing, hoping and wanting someone like Rubio to win against Crist; we want DO something to make it a reality. If the Dems can send legions of ACORN workers to each state, and those yahoos to Ohio; we of the Conservative stripe can also form armies and legions of like minded folks to aid those who wish to serve their states in a Conservative manner. If you cannot go to Florida to put some boots on ground, then for the love of Pete send the man some money!
FYI, Russell is going after Murtha again! Let us get some lawyers in those voting areas, and put some boots on the ground in PA! It is time to fight people and not just with a wish and a prayer. We need real action! Let us not make it easy for the Dems to commit voter fraud! Let us have our candidates up by thousands and thousands of votes! So many votes so they cannot find enough ballots in trunks, basements, under mattresses, or in closets to over come their deficits!

Because the republicans in congress, at least the leadership, are not conservatives. They are professional politicians who don’t care about conservatism, don’t care about America. They only care about protecting their lofty perch over us commoners.

What the religious repeatedly fail to understand is that there is a big difference between offense and contempt.
I was not at all offended by what he said about God and that hospice nurse. I was simply reminded how contemptuous religious people are.
By the way, if I were pro-life I wouldn’t pass that video around too much because everything he said about God loving the embryo as much as he does the killer pretty much negates the pro-lifers excuse for being pro-life but pro-death penalty.
You religious politicians and pundits really need to get your stories straight about God.
Jaynie59 on May 20, 2009 at 2:03 PM
JetBoy, you and I can advocate for whom we want in a primary. However, I would hope you agree that the RNC should not involve itself in open primary battles, but let the voters make their endorsement known first. I want a party that is governed from the bottom up, not the top down.

Loxodonta on May 20, 2009 at 2:06 PM
The whole premise of that is wrong and liberal propaganda. The two issues do not go hand in hand. Many pro lifers are against the death penalty. That statement is stright from the talking point propaganda used against those who were offended by barry getting an honorary degree from ND.
By the way I am anti abortion and anti death penalty. Not that I feel compassion for criminals, I think they should all live in 6 by 8 concrete cells for the entire term of their sentence with no tv, movies, magazines, music, etc. No visitors, nothing. They shouldn’t lift weights, play basketball, nothing. Let them do situps and pushups in their cells. They should only leave that cell for education that will make them productive when they leave prison.

crist took hundreds of thousands if not millions of democrat voters off the property tax rolls resulting in state wide budget crisis. Those who were not taken off the tax rolls have seen their local fees and sales taxes increased and many of us will see our millage rates increased, increasing our property taxes. crist tried to impose the same regulations on industry in Florida that was imposed by a block of democrat governors out west but was blocked by the republicans in the state legislature. crist is a foul, lying, self serving politician. No worries. But what exactly do you mean by Crist’s “lifestyle”? If he’s gay…it would be news to me. Just for the record, even if Crist WERE gay, I would never, ever vote for, or endorse, any political candidate just ’cause they’re gay.
Although I agree with you that a party…and lo, a government…governed from the bottom up is the way it should be, there’s one thing I’ve come to the realization of: Politics in Washington ain’t ever gonna change. So many good, honest people go there, and soon learn to “play the game”…or they’re done.
As for parties endorsing a primary candidate, I’m torn on that one. There’s pros and cons to it. Either way, it’s only an endorsement. People still can vote the way they want to.
