Joe Klein: If only Krauthammer could walk, he’d be a better pundit
posted at 11:58 am on May 20, 2009 by Allahpundit
I’m taking a risk paraphrasing it like that because I can’t quite believe he meant it the way it reads, especially given his track record of taking histrionic Sullivan-esque offense at far gentler political attacks. Either Politico’s quoting him egregiously out of context or … they must be quoting him out of context, right?
“He became Ground Zero among the neo-cons, but he’s vastly smarter than most of them,” said Time’s Joe Klein, an admirer and critic who praised Krauthammer’s “writing skills and polemical skills” as “so far above almost anybody writing columns today.”
“There’s something tragic about him too,” Klein said, referring to Krauthammer’s confinement to a wheelchair, the result of a diving accident during his first year of medical school. “His work would have a lot more nuance if he were able to see the situations he’s writing about.”
“My writing speaks for itself,” Krauthammer responded in a curt email.
What could he possibly mean? Because Krauthammer can’t visit Baghdad to tour Camp Victory personally his hawkishness is somehow ill informed? How many leftist bottom-feeders expound authoritatively on foreign policy online every day who have never been within a thousand miles of the Middle East?
He must have meant something else. Or did he? John Podhoretz goes nuclear:
We cannot go back in time and visit the battlefields of the Civil War, or Agincourt, or the Peloponnese—are we therefore incapable of seeing their nuances? FDR was in a wheelchair and did not visit the battlefields of World War II-—were its nuances beyond him as well?
The self-infatuation this quote reveals about Klein’s own celebration of his own passport stamps—the words of a lesser author and thinker about one who so surpasses him in clarity and insight that a wiser Klein would have been better off just admitting that he can’t hold a candle to Krauthammer and let it go at that—is striking enough. But let’s face it. This is simply disgusting, no matter how you slice it. Perhaps men and women in wheelchairs, or who are blind, or deaf, or have other infirmities that make their ability to get on a plane and go to Iraq should simply forbear any sort of opinion about such things. They should, instead, be left to Joe Klein.
If he did mean it the way it sounds, then it looks like a derivative of the chickenhawk smear. He can’t rightly accuse a hawkish pundit who’s handicapped of being too gutless to lace up the boots, so instead he turns it into faux sympathy for how poor Charles can’t help but be blinkered as a prisoner of his condition. Here’s hoping Bret Baier has the stones to bring this up on tonight’s “Special Report” panel and let him respond at length.

Krauthammer is one of the very best there is. Like Charles himself, I too wish he hadn’t had the accident that put him in the chair, but charles managed to excell in spite of it.
If Klein were in his shoes, what would he accomplish?

From the article
Has Politico actually seen this “thesis” and if so why haven’t the rest of us? Is it brilliant or is it totally horrible? I guess this might explain that:
_______________
Furthermore, Klein would be a better journalist if he had a brain.

This is good news! I thought Krauthammer had MS and would leave us early. I’m glad to know his handicap is not life threatening. Is that calloused? I’m sorry he has a handicap at all but… oh snap!
So this is probably a sign that Klein is fighting the truth that Krauthammer brings to the argument. Can’t beat the argument? Attack the messenger.

OK, I see your point and I agree with you. Maybe I should have used better wording myself.
I guess my point was, it’s offensive weather he meant it or not and a good writer should realize that. That said, if he didn’t realize this (i.e. he’s not the best write), then he should immediately reply.

I had know idea that Krauthammer was confined to a wheelchair. I never wondered about it; all I know is that on most issues, he says what I think more clearly than I can think it.
He’s wrong about the gasoline tax, though.

Perhaps you are right, that’s it’s envy, but I honestly believe it’s lust for power, dominance. This is why the left does so much bullying on the streets and in academia, to intimidate opponents into submission.
Loxodonta on May 20, 2009 at 1:14 PM
Actually, it can lead to chronic problems that could take him from us sooner than we or he would like. I hope it doesn’t.
Now for my outrage! As the mother of an adult son who has never walked, I am pissed. My son’s disabilities, far more encompassing than Mr. Krauthammer’s, possibly prevents him from having the same perspective as I have, but he has a perspective I will never have and I believe it is far more nuanced. He takes nothing for granted, I take most things for granted. Mr. Klein, you are an ass.

Wow – Klein what a major asshat you are.
I’ve been reading and enjoying the quality and clarity of Krauthammer’s work for several years now. And up until now, I had NO idea he was wheelchair bound. Can’t say this revelation makes me think any less of the man – actually, perhaps quite the contrary. Some of our best thinkers i this world suffer various handicaps. Stephen Hawking comes to mind.
Keep up the fine work libtards – with Klein as one of your mouthpieces, we conservative thinkers will find it all the easier to mock the hell out of vacuous ‘progressive’ thinking such at that exhibited by Klein.

What a cheap ass shot. What an ass.
Who is to say that Krauthammer can’t go to any of these places? Sure he can, it’s just more difficult. As the father and care giver of a quadriplegic I know this is true.
Krauthammer has overcome massive odds and obstacles to accomplish what he has and he has my respect for that as well as being a decent and very intelligent person.
Screw Klein. Maybe HE could write better articles if he didn’t have the handicap of having his head jammed in his ass most of the time. Let him answer that one, then let this stupid piece of shit explain to my son why he can’t do what he wants if he overcomes obstacles in his way. I want to see this asshat do that.
And a warning to him to parse his words carefully, otherwise he may end up with an angry care givers foot stuck in Klein’s rectum along side his head.

Let us just remember that Joe Klein is, in fact, a lying sack of schmidt.
Any doubt about that? Remember he was asked point blank if he authored Primary Colors, and he said he was not, which turned out to be a bald faced lie.
So why should I take anything a proven liar says seriously?

Years ago, I worked as the psychologist part of a team which included a fine bunch of speech-language pathologists, at Mt Sinai Medical Center in NYC. It gave me an appreciation for the difficulties with which people who suffer from dysfluencies (stutters) have to contend. People can tend to avoid social situations and to become withdrawn (which is where the psychological component came in).
Before I’d seen him on “Special Report,” I was an admirer of Krauthammer’s writing. When I saw him on the panel, I was floored with admiration at the unmitigated moxie it takes for a person with such a whopper of a dysfluency (even one which seems to have been so well and successfully treated) who made his living partly by speaking on camera.
I had no idea he was chair-bound till now, and my admiration for the guy just jumped up even more notches.
Klein is a troglodyte who is so far beneath contempt that contempt is a mere speck in his dark little sky.

ladyingray on May 20, 2009 at 1:47 PM
And letting it hang out there: Either Klein’s writing also speaks for itself, and shows his bigotry, or Klein requires “nuance” to be explained.

Ah, yeah, I couldn’t say it better.
Upstater85 on May 20, 2009 at 1:50 PM
Charles is my favorite columnist. He’s so much more insightful, (and consistently so) than anyone out there…no one even comes close. I look forward to hearing or reading what he thinks about the issues. I don’t read Time much, so I don’t know if this guy meant his remarks to be in bad taste or not. If he did, he gets my vote for slimeball of the year.
One of my favorite pieces Charles wrote was about the “supposed” drunk astronauts (which turned out to be false I think). “Not one, not two, but three miles away…”

My wife and I were talking about that very thing last night. Many people would given up on life after what Charles went through. We’re big fans of Krauthammer, have been for a long time. When this guy speaks it well worth the time to listen. Krauthammer doesn’t need anyone help with someone like Klein.

ladyingray on May 20, 2009 at 2:13 PM
Took me a while, but yes, Joe Klein is Jewish.
(Of course I have encountered at least one person of Jewish ancestry who had nothing good to say about Jewish people, but I guess this approach is far too “nuanced” for me to follow. So, I completely withdraw the “nuance,” and apologize for it.)
Therefore, since Klein did not attack Krauthammer due to anti-Semitism, I’m left with plain old bigotry, or bigotry to advance liberal ideology. Any other explanations?
I’d love to ask him.
Loxodonta on May 20, 2009 at 2:19 PM
For my money, there is no one from the right or left that is more insightful about politics and policy than Charles Krauthammer.
My favorite example of his insight came after the first Obama-McCain debate where he said the debate reminded him of an old Boston newspaper headline following onc of the most famous Havard-Yale football games: “Havard Wins, 29-29.” It was perfect in explaining that Obama won by tying.

We’ve had plenty of HONEST reporters like Michael Yon verify Krauthammer’s vision of the way things are working in Iraq.

Krauthammer is a class act, much like Neil Cavuto. Both men have overcome and are still dealing with incredible physical setbacks, but both refuse to let it define them.
I remember Cavuto reading letters on his show from detractors who claim Neil has “never had to deal with adversity” or some such crap, and each time Neil would always give a classy reply without playing the victim card, no matter how well he deserved to. Me, I would have hard a hard time replying back, “Yo, jackass! Cancer! MS! Screw you for not having a clue.”
Krauthammer is just as cool.

There’s something tragic about Klein too. His work would have a lot more nuance if he didn’t have sex with dead farm animals.

Hope springs eternal. My dad would have been so much more mobile if he had taken the option of amputation but even to 80 he believed that that they would find a cure and that he would be a candidate for it. Stem cell experimentation was never illegal so I don’t know how he pins that on Republicans but perceptions are funny things.
