Iran’s nuclear weapons program, uncovered by Democrats; Update: Iran tests new missile

If Democrats make the case, it must be true:
In testimony to the Senate Foreign Relations Committee that was largely ignored by the media, the legendary Manhattan District Attorney [Robert Morgenthau] opened a window on how Iran is secretly obtaining the ingredients for an arsenal of mass destruction. Mr. Morgenthau, whose recent cases have exposed illicit Iranian finance and procurement networks, has discovered what he calls “Iran’s shopping list for materials related to weapons of mass destruction.” They add up to “literally thousands of records.”
The list included 400 sophisticated gyroscopes and 600 accelerometers, necessary for developing accurate long-range missiles. But wait, there’s more:
Mr. Morgenthau also noted that the material shipped by LIMMT “included 15,000 kilograms of a specialized aluminum alloy used almost exclusively in long-range missile production; 1,700 kilograms of graphite cylinders used for banned electrical discharge machines which are used in converting uranium; more than 30,000 kilograms of tungsten-copper plates; 200 pieces of tungsten-copper alloy hollow cylinders, all used for missiles; 19,000 kilograms of tungsten metal powder, and 24,500 kilograms of maraging steel rods . . . especially hardened steel suitable for long-range missiles.”
Lest anyone think that these materials may have innocent uses, Mr. Morgenthau added that “we have consulted with top experts in the field from MIT and from private industry and from the CIA… Frankly, some of the people we’ve consulted are shocked by the sophistication of the equipment they’re buying.”
Iran was also buying a rare metal used in the IEDs killing US troops in Iraq and Afghanistan. Furthermore, a staff report for the Foreign Relations Committee (chaired by the not-so-right-wing John F. Kerry), notes that Iran “could produce enough weapons-grade material for a bomb within six months.”
Given the record compiled by his fellow Democrats, it seems rather odd that Pres. Obama plans on spending six months assessing whether his diplomatic effort is “moving in the right direction.” After all, Obama recently reaffirmed that he would like a nuke-free world and acknowledges that Iran’s intransigence threatens to set off a Mideast arms race.
As John Hannah recounted in yesterday’s Washington Post, “[s]uccessful denuclearization of hostile states is most likely to occur as a result of regime change, coercive diplomacy or military action, not U.S. pledges of mutual respect.” As someone familiar with the Chicago Way, Obama should understand that you can get further with a kind word and a gun than you can with just a kind word.
The president is trying to vote “present” on this issue, but he looks to be missing in inaction.
Update (AP): Iran’s answer to The One’s outreach? A new missile test, of course, designed to show how much suffering they’re capable of inflicting on Israel — among other places:
Iran says the missiles have a range of almost 1,250 miles (2,000 kilometers). If tthat’s accurate, the missile brings Moscow, Athens and southern Italy within striking distance from Iran, according to Jane’s Information Group, which provides information on defense issues.
Your must-read of the day: Two analysts tell the Jerusalem Post they’ve concluded what the rest of us figured out long ago, that Obama’s given up on the idea of halting Iran’s nuclear program.

Karl, great job on this post. Seriously, this is National Review quality.
It has certainly scared the crap out of the Hot Air community.
Now, if only we could get the rest of the country (world) to pay attention to this threat. Or at least the TOTUS.

I would feel better even if Alfred E. Newman was president.

Shocking. Obama might not be serious about ending the threat of a nuclear Iran?
But, he talks CONSTANTLY about what a serious threat it is. And look at all the hard work he’s done on the issue. Why, by 2011, we might even ask the UN Security Council to issue a strongly-worded statement!

All the F-117s are retired. No more.
My plan would be to find a high ranking and competent technocrat in the Iranian government. Drop a smart bomb filed with Iranian explosives on his home one night. Use metal for the casing and fuze from confiscated Iranian IADs. Repeat as needed. Do not hit the leaders — hit the people making the trains run on time.

I’d think Thompson would be chief of staff and John Bolton would be SecState. Don’t forget that the U.N. headquarters will have been relocated to Libya.

I’m aghast! How could the Republicans have missed this for 8 years? Once again this proves how omniscient the Democrats are! How could we not have elected our true Messiah? No doubt, they might even uncover Iran’s Declaration of War against the US from 1978! Opps! I wasn’t supposed to reveal that bit of ultra top secret, eyes-only codeword tidbit.

Pentagon has made plans that they’ll take F-22 “Raptor” fighter to replace those retired F-117.
Goldfeens said, for the next year and a half, the remaining F-117 will continue to serve in the 49th Fighter Wing, which has one squadron of aircraft deployed in S.Korea.
From http://community.travelchinaguide.com/forum2.asp?i=36373
oddly enough.
And the F-22s? Cancled by the One after only 187 (of the 350+ initially requested) built and deployed. We await the techically and fiscally troubled, undeployed, and inferior (obsolete) f-35s.

For all the liberals channeling their inner Nevile Chamberlain, it’s news to them.
I just hope Israel acts soon or they’re finished. My God Israel, ACT…. because the leadership in this nation will NOT!

Love the timing, considering Bambi and Bibi’s photo op on Monday. As Bambi postures for “nice, nice peace with Iran” ; Bibi is still hard line as to the actual threat Iran poses, and well hell – has been saying for over 20 years now.
This is far above Bambi’s pay grade – he can’t possibly imagine the brutal reality of what goes on , outside of weak UN/IAEA “reports” and “trusted” foreign partners who are testing the limit each and every day.
Since his elction – N Korea and Iran have now tested long range missles; ironically vindicating Bush/Cheney when they named the Axis of Evil.
And if anyone believes a Russian “expert” as to the viability of our missles defense shield, there really is a sucker born every minute.
Odie1941 on May 20, 2009 at 10:56 AM
obama knows all this info because he gets it every a.m. in his nat’l security briefing (unless, of course, he insists on only “happy” news).
obama will not do anything about this. didn’t bambi say in one of his books that he would stand with the muslims?
kelley in virginia on May 20, 2009 at 10:57 AM
you mean, almost two decades of scouring the world for centrifuges and other cool toys, building nuclear reactors, hiring the Ruskies to build secret nuclear sites, enriching uranium, and palling around with the north Koreans (what lovely missiles you have Kim…) was all for a nuclear weapons program ??

That sort of thing worked for Muammar Qaddafi and Saddam but they were just thug dictators. The leaders in Iran are religious fanatics. A few explosions and the resultant casualties would only intensify their hatred and reassure them that their cause is righteous. I’m afraid that there is only one path out at this point and that’s a war…a really big one.
Oldnuke on May 20, 2009 at 11:00 AM
OT: But I would like to see a movie someday where there is this Israeli 007 working for the Mossad that defeats the mullahs evil plans with high tech weapons, a kippah, some chutzpah, and his schmechel.

What’s the next Iranian holiday? Barack’s done Nowruz – surely there is another opportunity to enchant Ahmadinijead into surrendering his nukes.

Of course, this is basically the same thing that the dems were saying about Iraq before the Iraq war. The repubs will probably have to solve the problem again and then the dems will resort to their usual talking points.

With the country on the verge of a government manufactured economic depression, the Constitution being trashed (government doing things it does NOT have a legal mandate to do), extreme political and cultural polarization to the point of possibly threatening the union, and a despostic government at home…..I could care less about Iran getting a nuclear bomb.
and I am a conservative hawk normally! Our country has an existential threat occuring right under our noses if it is not lost already.

Everything with zero has an expiration date. Perhaps he’ll have to act like Bush (without Democrat detractors) and actually do something.

I somehow have a feeling BiBi may not wait until the 6 months are up. I think he’s smart enough to know that Oboingo will use the same tactic as DinnerJacket: “talk” until all the options disappear, and Israel has its back against the wall. BiBi’s also smart enough to know that Oboingo’s not his friend, and is no supporter of Israel.

America is not in a bubble, sweetpea. Iran getting a nuke will not end well for someone. Or Everyone.
that’s the problem with people now. If it doesn’t directly affect them, they don’t give two tiny little craps about people they don’t know. Must be nice to be that selfish.
Needless to say, my trip to Turkey next year is going to be extremely interesting. Especially considering who I go with (Hint: Starts with an “I”, ends with “sraelis”….)
mjk on May 20, 2009 at 11:29 AM
Obama set his foot-dragging timeline because he lacks the balls to confront Iran over the nuke issue. He’d much rather go over and genuflect before Mahmoud Iwannajihad and then sit around sipping tea. Israel will take care of Israel, only it may unfortunately be retaliatory thanks to Ospineless. Israel does the heavy lifting, Barry avoids a confrontation, and as a bonus gets to criticize Israel for protecting itself. I’m so glad I’ve hung up my uniform. I can barely stomach the idea of having this gutless assclown as my CinC.

mr.blacksheep on May 20, 2009 at 11:39 AM
(sorry – pet peeve)
Anyway, Iran getting large nuke, or several large nukes, or several small nukes is something to really care about.
Israel is the obvious target, but there are plenty of other targest in range that would throw the country and world into turmoil.
What if they hit Baghdad, how many troops would we loose? Iraq would also be lost. What if they hit the Suez canal? Oil fields, ports? What if he hits a city or two in India? The civilian casualties would be horrific, India would retaliate, Pakistan might hit India in return, India hits Pakistan – a nightmare.
reaganaut on May 20, 2009 at 11:40 AM
I think Barry could talk them out of that. Don’t you? After all, he has a “gift”.
mr.blacksheep on May 20, 2009 at 11:42 AM
Look for Israel do be doing a LOT of weapons testing before the end of the year. Iran will be able to watch it “up close and personal.”
Star20 on May 20, 2009 at 11:43 AM
Iran claims they have a missile that will reach Israel and Europe, but I haven’t seen anywhere, anyone actually asserting that it actually will and “here is teh proof”.
remember the Iranians are the same folks who gave a picture of a plastic model airplane as proof of their ultrasecret super duper new jet fighter. So, color me dubious.
I want proof. As for Hussein waiting six months, the guy is a complete freaking retard and an America hater besides, so like, I’ so totally shocked dude. (spoken with a heavy Valley boy/surfer dude accent)
dogsoldier on May 20, 2009 at 11:46 AM
Sorry, but you totally misrepresented my sentiments. In the NORMAL order of things, I do care about the ongoing global jihad against the west and take it very seriously. The problem now, playing games with Iran is like watering your plants as your house burns down around you. That’s how seriously I take what is going on in this country. I know we are not in a bubble but my priorities are here at home.
At this point if Iran is that big of a threat (and yes they are), skip all of the BS and TAKE ACTION! How long have we been playing this diplomatic paddy cakes with the Mullahs? It’s obviously helping them rather than thwarting.
Goodeye_Closed on May 20, 2009 at 11:46 AM
Wait a minute!!! Didn’t we hear yesterday about some cooperative Russian/American study group saying that Iran is years away from getting a nuclear weapon, or the missiles to carry it?
Wouldn’t that give Obama a whole term to try to sweet-talk Ahmanutjob into “peace in our time”?
Like his predecessor, Obambi needs to take a good, long, hard look into Putin’s soul.
PUTIN IS LYING.
Iran is dangerous! Wake up, Mr. President !

I think this quote is perfect…
You cannot legislate the poor into freedom by legislating the wealthy out of freedom.
What one person receives without working for, another person must work for without receiving. The government cannot give to anybody anything that the government does not first take from somebody else.
When half the people get the idea that they do not have to work because the other half is going to take care of them, and when the other half gets the idea that it does no good to work because somebody else is going to get what they work for, that my dear friend, is about the end of any nation.
You cannot multiply wealth by dividing it.

This post highlights the conundrum of what’s happened to our national security policy ever since the donks decided to veer so far to the left that they went over the cliff edge:
1. Generally speaking, the donks have only one enemy for all occasions: Republicans.
2. The only way the donks can get behind any kind of assertive foreign policy or military action is if a donk is president; accordingly, the only time when the country has any hope of a unified front against a foreign enemy is if a donk is president.
3. Unfortunately, donk presidents after Harry Truman have been weak on foreign policy and despairingly lousy war presidents.
So … if a Republican is president, he may be better on foreign and defense policy than anyone the donks can come up with; but he’ll be hobbled because the donks will see him as their only enemy.
– Or –
If a donk is president, then the donks will be able to rationalize supporting the president’s overseas dealings and the Republicans will generally fall in line if there’s a perceived foreign threat; but unfortunately, the donks have an abysmal record since 1952 when it comes to promoting America’s interests as opposed to those of foreigners.
Heckuva choice, huh?

Not good. Will this be Obama’s war? Could we just quit the stupid spending long enough to focus on the spread of nuclear weapons technology?
Obama has been staunchly against preemption. We can assume however, that Obama can break any promise. I wonder what Israel plans to do. 6 months to the end?

***
The nuclear “countdown to Armagedden” clock is running now. Benjamin Netanyahu met with President Obama (PBUH) and confirmed what he already knew–Israel is on it’s own and cannot expect any effective help from the new U.S.S.A.
***
Bibi knows which end of the gun the bullet comes from. He lost his brother to a sniper in the Israeli raid on Entebbe a few decades ago. He knows how Israel stopped Saddam’s nuke program by bombing the Osirik reactor a few decades ago. And how Israel took out Syria’s nascent nuke program 2 years ago. The reactor parts may have come from Saddam’s Iraq.
***
Bibi has a few questions to answer before the strike on the Iranian nuke facilities occur. What is the real status of the Iranian bomb? Israel probably has “sleeper” agents working inside the program or government now. Can existing Israeli underground penetrating bombs (conventional or nuclear) do the job? How long will it take to build them if they don’t already exist?
***
Coming soon–and the Israeli strike may very well save Washington D.C. and New York City. Ditto for Chicago and San Francisco.

NYC will be included by the terrorists because of the large jewish population. I would think they would wait until Obama is reelected to wipe out all those ACORN accolytes in America’s big cities though. Striking before November 2012 could elect a Republican and if a Republican won in 2012, he might actually blame the Iranians and retaliate. Obama would blame Bush and do nothing.

Hint #1: If you drop a Lira on the ground and step on it to keep a breeze from blowing it away – be ready for a life sentence in a turkish prison. Do not step on anything with Attaurk’s image ever while there.
Hint # 2: If you see a woman – never look at her directly. Never take her pic. Unless you like large crowds beating you.
Hint #3: Remember once you step out of ‘Stanbul or Ankara, you are in the 7th Century were Islamic rules for living and staying alive apply.
Hint #4: If you see a hot chick and she is willing to talk to you, be prepared to be smuggled out of the country – preferably in a coffin. Else you will lose some lower vital parts to a very swift Turkish knife before you are stoned to death.
Hope this helps.

PS 7 years in a Turkish prison is a life sentence.

Actually, the first time the Twin Towers were hit was on Clinton’s watch.
Along with our embassies and battleships.
9/11 transpired on that date because Atta told Mohammad they were not ready.
The jihadist do take our politics in consideration when they plan attacks and I think that beyond a shadow of a doubt, they feel much better about mounting an attack under Obama than they would have under Bush considering the success he has had in whipping jihadist butt since 9/11.

I basically agree. I was trying to think of clever, low risk ways to stop Iran.
If there is a war, we have a variety of winning methods.
My favorite is to cut Iran’s electrical power to zero.
A country without electrical power in the 21st century is not a threat. You need electricity to run centrifuges. And to run a nuke program. The US military can put the hammer down anytime they are tasked. Our AF and Navy are not as engaged as the Army and Marines. The US has the technology to stop Iran cold.
But as Coldwarrior noted: “Do we have the leadership? ” My thoughts — no.
