Colin Powell: I belong to the Republican Party that’s “waiting to emerge”
posted at 11:25 am on May 20, 2009 by Allahpundit
Reminds me of when Democrats talk longingly about their love for the America That Will Be once the entire progressive agenda is enacted, in contrast to the poor imitation of America that we have now.
I don’t know what just made me think of that.
“Rush Limbaugh says, ‘Get out of the Republican Party.’ Dick Cheney says, ‘He’s already out.’ I may be out of their version of the Republican Party, but there’s another version of the Republican Party waiting to emerge once again,” Powell told the crowd.
No word on what this emerging version will look like, but presumably a key tenet will be that “Americans are looking for more government in their life, not less.” And how long will he have to wait? If Jon Huntsman’s any indicator, a bit longer than three years:
During our conversations last month in Utah, Huntsman had already begun to realize that perhaps the Republican Party was not ready for him. “You cannot have a successful party based upon a very narrow band, demographically,” he tells me. “You’ve gotta broaden it to include more young people, more people of color, more people who are urban-dwellers, more who are the intelligentsia in America, many who have jettisoned the party. … And that’s ultimately I think how it’s going to play out. We’re just not there yet.” Two years was probably not enough time for the party to change. “He realized he’d just be beating his head against the wall with these guys, which made him open to the phone call [from Obama],” says another source close to Huntsman. “If he thought he had a real chance to be the standard-bearer and savior of the party, obviously he would have said no.”
At least one GOP kingmaker thinks Romney’s the answer in 2012, which brings to mind a famous quote from Gertrude Stein. Exit question: Isn’t most of the sturm und drang over how centrist the party should be a luxury of being out of power? If public anger mounts over spending and the backlash sends a wave of Republicans to Congress next year, the responsibility of wielding some measure of power again is going to paper a lot (although not all) of these differences, just as it did when a coalition of hawks, social cons, and fiscal conservatives coexisted relatively happily for the past 15 years. We can’t fight the Democrats right now so we fight with each other. We can fight them again, we will.

I’m beginning to think that Powell has just gone totally insane. What’s with this bug he has up his a$$ about having to call himself a Republican, no matter what? He’s insane.

I wonder what it is that makes him want to wait around for this emergence? It doesn’t make sense, he should just move on to the folks who already believe as he does. I would be happy if he would point out where he differs with the Dems. Sort of like that other famous Republican who shall remain nameless.

Colin, please do what other retired military men of honor do – find a nice home on a lake and go fishing.
You are not a republican nor do you stand for Republican values and tenants.
You are black first and foremost; witnessed by your adoring love for the biggest dolt to enter the WH ever.
And I see California , the land of Dems, rejected your notion “people want more government in their lives”, as did the 1M people attending tea party’s.

What version is he referring to? The midle road McCain types? He supported a far left wing socialist over a middle ground Republican. And we lost…
Maybe he is looking for a life preserver from the sinking Obama Presidency. I say we throw him an anvil instead. He wanted Obama, now he should be stuck with it.

The only way a third party would be viable is if after an election all of the conservatives joined the Constitution Party at once. This would give the Constitution Party a foothold in the govt with plenty of incumbents. They would have about 2 years til any of them had to be re-elected.

I am not embarrassed about my demand: I don’t want Colin Powell in my party nor any other fair weather friends who abandon beliefs in favor of race in their political support. That is the very definition of racism. Colin Powell is an excellent general and he should stay with that. As a politician he exemplifies the very worst type of racism. I think a clear statement on this should be the GOP’s main focus.

Powell’s not speaking for the majority of Americans. Perhaps Huntsman realized by being booed of the stage at a tea party rally that we aren’t ready for him. He supported the stimulus, what the HECK was he doing at a tea party anyway?
We need more of this: Sarah Palin–Obama’s chance is as predictable as Alaska’s winter.

Actually Republican vs. Democrat is a self chosen party affiliation while conservative vs. liberal speaks more to your belief system.
He can call himself whatever he wants, he’ll just never be conservative.
We need to eliminate the automatic link between Republican and conservative as the elected Republicans already have done with their votes. Only then will we stop blindly electing any fool who sticks an R behind their name.

carbon_footprint on May 20, 2009 at 11:48 AM
I hear you, but Powell supported a marxist and argues for socialism. However bad the GOP might be, Powell is not one. Powell carries a political ideology that says that he must have cried when the USSR fell. That is Democrat, all the way.
People can complain about GOP spending over the recent past (though since 2006 it was all Dems controlling the purse strings – running right up to the credit crisis) but there is no comparison, whatsoever, with what the radical left-wing dems are doing. And Powell likes what these socialist fools are doing, so he is one of them.
Why is he so embarrassed about announcing what he obviously is?
Perhaps he’s too dumb to know how stupid he sounds? Or he’s just trying to do some more back-stabbing, as he did in the Plame case (which hamstrung the administration for almost two years)?
Either way, he’s a dem, through and through.

youngO on May 20, 2009 at 11:53 AM
BTW – let’s not let Huntsman off the hook so easily:
This is the perfect reduction of what the “moderates” are and how they see the world. If you step back, there’s no reason for any conservative to disagree with that statement. The difference is that Huntsman types seem to believe that you make yourself over to appeal to these demographic sub-groups. There’s no content, no perspective, just an attempt to hire these voters out for election day in the hope of getting to 50%+1. It’s trivial politics.
I think the difference finally comes down to people like Powell, Huntsman, Frum just don’t believe that we’re in very unusual times, or that there’s anything we can do about the encroaching and expanding state even if we could do something about it – and that both parties should revert to being parties of minor course corrections and micro-notions – midnight basketball, new computers for the GAO, and spoils for interest groups.

Someone that endorsed and voted for the disaster that is now our president has NO right to tell US what our party should be. Michael Steele needs to grow come onions and tell Colin that we DON’T need anymore turncoats in our party. We already have enough with McCain and he needs to go the way of the Specter.
HornetSting on May 20, 2009 at 11:58 AM
The kind of Republican Party that Powell is waiting for has already “emerged” all over the place in Europe. He could move there and join one of them. Those of us who would like better options than choosing between the right-of-left-of-center party and the left-of-left-of-center party will be happy to help him pack his bags.
This attempt to co-opt the Republicans with liberal views is nothing more than a program to manufacture a consensus where none exists. If both parties supposedly agree on titatic government, reckless deficit spending, cradle-to-grave welfare, and submissive foreign policy, it will be easy to paint everyone who doesn’t believe in those things as a voiceless member of the fringe. I’m ready to fight to prevent that, even if it means earning Colin Powell’s condescending disapproval.

The RINO Party already is amongst us; it is awaiting its rebirth, talking about “waiting to emerge.” They’ve already separated themselves from the GOP Platform when they became progressives rather than preserve the Constitution, conserve spending and eschew practices usurping authority.
There are many RINOs, ALL of whom are saboteurs of the GOP. With friends like Powell, who needs enemies. The guy won’t stand for equality before the Constitution, only for black supremacy; that’s pathetic.
