Obama raising car prices and killing people is just for starters

posted at 2:40 pm on May 19, 2009 by Karl

Michelle Malkin correctly notes that Pres. Obama’s planned standards for tailpipe emissions from new automobiles will raise the cost of a new car by $600 to $1,300 and continue a regulatory regime that kills motorists. That is more than can be said for the Associated Press, which is trying to bury the increased upfront cost down the memory hole.

As for the increased motorist deaths, which the National Academy of Sciences once estimated at 1,300 to 2,600 in 1993 alone, even a less lethal estimate of 800 excess deaths annually is roughly the number of US troops killed annually during the peak years of the Iraq war. Indeed, the estimated cumulative death toll of 46,000 in 2001 suggests that CAFE standards inflict casualties on the magnitude of Vietnam. The lapdog media, however, does not devote time to reporting the grim milestones when people die in fuel-efficient cars.

The supposed benefits of this regulation are explained by the Washington Post:

The measures are significant steps forward for the administration’s energy agenda by cutting greenhouse-gas emissions that contribute to climate change and by easing U.S. dependence on oil, most of which is imported.

However, increasing fuel-efficiency reduces the per-mile cost of operating vehicles, which increases the number of miles driven, thus reducing or eliminating any CAFE benefit. Between 1970-2001, the US made cars almost 50% more efficient, but the average number of miles a person drives doubled.

Environmentalists claim the new standards should cut carbon dioxide from tailpipes by 30 percent by 2016. Though that is unlikely, for the reason just stated, the fact remains that cars and light trucks subject to fuel economy standards make up only 1.5 percent of all global man-made greenhouse gas emissions. Thus, Americans will be paying more for cars and continuing to die in ever-greater numbers on the road, all for less than one-half of one percent of man-made greenhouse gas emissions. It is almost as though hardcore greens want to save the planet by killing people, but are only accomplishing the killing part.

Finally, one of the entirely predictable “unintended consequences” of raising the price of new cars will be to keep poorer people driving their old, greenhouse gas-spewing cars. Thus, it should surprise no one that Congress is already considering a “cash for clunkers” program designed to encourage trade-ins. This proposal is a twofer: not only does it attempt to patch a glaring flaw in today’s plan, but it would help save the jobs of all those UAW workers Obama and the Democrats rely upon every other November. Pushing the poor into these new Obamamobiles will also kill more people at the margins, but dead people tend to vote Democratic, so there is no net loss for the Democrats.

Good editorial. Deaths from newer cars is tragically under reported.

If I may:

I’ve been wanting to try out the Forhan Plan on any of my wife and my liberal friends, should the subject of CAFE standards come up. It’ll save 5-7 MPG while giving the driver more control over his or her car and saving an average of $1500 per vehicle:

Mandatory manual transmissions.

I think I’m mostly curious if these type of people would be willing to give up their automatics and learn how to drive sticks. I suspect when those who cannot drive one find out the personal sacrifice they must make, they may think twice.

Then again, they may take me seriously and enact it… ;)

Obama hates American citizens.

jukin on May 19, 2009 at 2:44 PM

Yeah, but he’ll just offset all those negatives by re-introducing the 55 MPH speed limit and building high-speed rail.

But really, by the time this comes into effect, who will be able to afford to drive anymore? By then, the Chinese will all be driving cars and we will all be driving bicycles.

The “killing motorists” meme is fodder for public transportation. Enter the highway @ your own risk. What will be insurable will be legislated soon enough. Regulation knows no bounds in Obama’s world.

If I can figure out a way to put wheels and a little motor on a dry cleaning bag, I’m going to get 132 miles per gallon on the highway.

Maybe we too can have a city like Havana with 50 year old cars driving around…just not Chicago.

WashJeff on May 19, 2009 at 2:44 PM

First they told us to by big strong cars so we would be protected in accidents.
Then they told us to drive little flimsy cars to get good gas milage.
Now when people die in little flimsy cars after tangling with a big strong car, somehow it is the SUV’s fault even if the flimsy car’s driver was at fault.

I believe that everything can be blamed on liberals.

While I agree that CAFE standards kill people, I think the above statement takes it a bit too far. A lot more people died on the roadways well before CAFE standards, but the decrease is attributable to safer vehicles and safer roads. The CAFE standards merely mute that decrease somewhat.

Global warming, if it is caused by CO2 is caused by feminists.

Go back to the days of Father Knows Best and Leave it to Beaver. Almost all women stayed home. One car and one job per family. Small homes to heat and nobody had air conditioning.
If we went back to those days we would have half the cars on the road (and traffic would move). Auto emissions would drop by 60 to 75%.
We would have half the office space to heat and cool, same for factory space.
See, even global warming can be honestly blamed on a liberal group: Feminists.

I love how this fascist attack on energy all takes place under the lie of global warming, but everyone is arguing about it from the point of view of oil independence. That’s purely illegal.

And I am also irked beyond belief to hear them talk about “pollution” and “clean air” in order to defend this global warming idiocy. This is the lowest, most underhanded way of forcing their policies on us through lies and deception.

If they cared about oil independence, then they would open up domestic drilling, perhaps switch to liquified natural gas (which is actually doable), and build nuke power plants like they were going out of style. But, instead, they strap suicidal regulations on our manufacturers, steal our choices, and talk about how everybody wins. Absolutely insane. They are atually arguing that these idiotic regulations will spur economic growth and reduce costs for everyone. It doesn’t get more insane than that. And no one in the press (save one or two) are actually calling them on it.

This junta in power is comprised of the most despicable people I have ever seen. They had better hope that the average IQ is 84, because this sort of idiocy won’t fly with any population smarter than that.

The groups making these calculations, including the National Academy of Sciences, are calculating excess deaths exclusive of other variables. According to the National Safety Council, there were 39,800 deaths last year. This was a low, for a variety of reasons, including higher fuel prices, new safety technologies, stricter law enforcement etc. The point is that somewhere around 1,000 additional lives would have been saved w/o CAFE standards.

However, the cost of a new Prius, plus the increase cost of insurance and registration does not off set the cost of gas and never will. Because I’m in California, and not subject to extreme weather, I expect my car to last for at least 200k miles.

Lots of things save lives, like restrictions on movements of all kinds. So what? I love my Hummer.
It’s like a big “F You” to Obama and his flunkies.

TexasJew on May 19, 2009 at 3:22 PM

I think I’ll write the prez and tell him I’m pro-choice on the environment, so keep an open mind about that, mmmkay?

Patrick S on May 19, 2009 at 3:22 PM

To these idiots ever look in a suburban school parking lot? Little League baseball parking lot? I do not see a bunch of Priuses, but whole bunch (80% at least) of SUVs and mini-Vans.

The gays call this group “breeeders”

The left sees abortion as the solution.

It is a vicious cycle; ignorance breeds poverty and poverty breeds ignorance. There is only one cure for both, and that is to stoop breeding these things. Stop bringing to birth children whose inheritance cannot be one of health or intelligence. Stop bringing into the world children whose parents cannot provide for them.

The most merciful thing that a family does to one of its infant members is to kill it.”

Obamaneezer Scrooge says….we must decrease the surplus population, in any way we can, without being obvious, to save the planet!

Abortions, unsafe cars, watered down health care, denial of health care to the elderly.

As he puffs down a cig!

capejasmine on May 19, 2009 at 3:23 PM

The tail pipe thing is just stupid. I mean law of conservation of mass. If you burn a fuel with a defined amount of carbon you’re going to get an amount of CO2 that is equal to about 3.6 times the mass of carbon burned. There isn’t any getting around this. The only options are to either collect the CO2 (which I can already say is a non-starter) or have the car get better gas mileage. (It’s not even a hard chemistry question to answer. I learned how to do that in chem 101.)

Dave_d on May 19, 2009 at 3:23 PM

Plus, when we start drilling domestically the supplies will last longer.
jonknee on May 19, 2009 at 3:15 PM

And when will Obama allow that to happen?

The Chinese are going to kick our asses and we will really deserve it.

Smart Power meet Smart Car That comes with a whopping 1.0 liter, 71 hp, 3 cylinder engine. Like mine? I designed it in Commie Red in honor of Dear Leader.
Dr.Cwac.Cwac on May 19, 2009 at 2:54 PM

I saw one of these on the road yesterday. Lots of Pickups, dualies and SUV’s stacking up behind it.(Ranch Country)

LOL: Lovely wife and I both said organ donor car nearly in sync.

Don’t believe the star ratings they only apply when viewed against a vehicle of the same class. If the driver of the car we saw tangled with any of the vehicles around him/her they would’ve been donating organs.

Like others I’ll just have to keep my current vehicle running because I certainly won’t buy and drive one of those.

For a nominal fee I will outfit your SUV with the latest in disaster-survival upgrades; sealed components, tread kits, heavy duty radiators, etc.

Replacing an alternator or a tranny will cost you extra.

Bishop on May 19, 2009 at 3:20 PM

I assume by fee, you mean ammo?

Vashta.Nerada on May 19, 2009 at 3:27 PM

Safety standards. I will put a ‘roo catcher on the front end and a 10,000 pound trailer hitch bumper on the rear. That solves the messy problem with insurance deductibles.

Problem is that they are not letting us drill here…

AND this does NOT get us off of oil.

US Auto manufacturers need to decide on a technology to go to… either Compressed Natural Gas (more effiecient and burns cleaner), or Electric… and then we need to build the infrastructure to support it.

This is NOT a solution to any of the problems… it is just a waste of money…

Oh, and… I thought it took CONGRESS to impose CAFE standards… how come Barry is suddenly making these announcements with his Bought and Paid for Lackeys from Detroit?

Global Warming. They are backsiding it through the EPA and the illusion that CO2 is “pollution”. They should all be arrested for this clear abuse of English, science, and government.

Obama should just design a new car himself. Seems to me that another head of state did that decades ago, so Obama, the greatest leader ever, should be able to also.

It will have 2 steering wheels, one to go one way and another to quickly go another way. It will have a GPS system that will tell the driver exactly where he is no matter which of the 57 states he is in. It will get about 1 mpg but the drivers manual will say that it will start getting 100mpg if you drive it for at least 4 years. It will have a hood ornament that looks like Michelle’s lower jaw. In the glove compartment will be a mini-me Rahm Emanuel who will jump out and fix a traffic ticket if the driver should get one. If it is used as a company car the no extra cost Geithner on board computer program option will compute the mileage for tax purposes and do so very much to the owner’s advantage and that could pay for the car right there!

Ladies and Gentlemen, I give you the HopeNChange mobile. Get your advance orders in and beat the crowd. Discounts for volume purchases. No down payment necessary just as long as your kids or grandkids have a credit card or are expected to get one someday. If you or your kids or your grandkids can not pay, you will all be sold to the Chinese as coolies.

Here’s a thought.. since obama is so enamored of socialism perhaps he can ressurect one of the technological highlights of the commie world…. the Trabant..

That was the cardboard 2 cylinder, smoke spewing POS that some commies were lucky enough to own…

The New Dodge Rahm/Fiat hybrid. Has 4 cylinders and on a good day 3 of them fire. Down hill 50 MPG. Up hill with 3 teens pushing about the same.

Liberal “greenie” logic:

We don’t care that these standards will result in more traffic deaths. This is just another unpublished benefit of these standaards. With each additional death caused in “green” vehicles the resultant CO2 benefit to Mother Gaia is increased.

“Driving “green” cars saves CO2, motorists dying in “green” cars also saves CO2. It’s win/win really…”

By the way, if obama is such a freaking expert on glueball warmering, perhaps he can ‘splian summtin to me… .

Where were the great lakes 6000 years ago??? Hmmm, You should know that.. After all, you are from chicago.. er mabey NY er perhaps Hawaii er maybe indonesia er kenya.. Whatever, you lived for a while right next to the great lakes.. Did you ever put down Marx and Engles long enough to learnn a little about the geography of your ‘home’???

answer- They were under an ice cap two freaking miles thick.

That ice cap has been melting for 90,000 years or so. At one time it reached a lot further south. How long have we had industry??? two hundred years or so?? SO Jugears, what the hell caused all that ice to melt before humans even existed????

bullseye on May 19, 2009 at 3:42 PM

Obama is also touting that the new standards will save 1.6 billion barrels of oil. The media is loving that this will lessen our dependence on oil.

Well, if you want to do that, how about just opening up ANWR?
