Louisiana GOP votes to override Jindal’s stimulus rejection
posted at 6:53 pm on May 19, 2009 by Laura Curtis
An epic fail, courtesy of the Louisiana GOP, and a helpful illustration of what’s wrong with the GOP at the national level as well.
Bobby Jindal – who, in spite of some serious flaws, is still the best governor we’ve had in my lifetime – refused part of the Federal “stimulus” package. His reasons for doing so were well-publicized; he didn’t want to commit Louisiana to an unemployment benefit extension that will obligate Louisiana taxpayers to pay up after Federal funding runs out.
Rather than debate this decision on the merits, Democratic Rep. Avon Honey sneaked a provision into an unrelated worker’s compensation bill at the last minute which overrides Jindal’s decision. The House GOP voted for it unanimously.
Rep. Cameron Henry, R-Jefferson, said he would have spoken against the amendment if he had known what it did.
Republican House members are now indulging in outraged rhetoric, but haven’t offered any explanation why they voted for something they had not read. Probably because they don’t want to admit that voting for bills they have not read and don’t understand is standard operating procedure at both the federal and local levels.
A lot of the outrage people I spoke to at the New Orleans tea party was over just this sort of game-playing, and while it was largely directed at Democrats, the GOP certainly wasn’t exempt. The GOP could pick up a lot of votes just by enacting common sense, good government measures like requiring a bill only include provisions about what the bill claims to be about, and requiring that bills be read before they are passed. Those are measures voters would enthusiastically support. I can’t think of a simpler concept to market; the ads practically write themselves. It’s painfully obvious that government of the people, by the people, for the people, should not be hidden from the people by obfuscation. But instead of reforming the system, the GOP publicly whines about Democrats being sneaks and liars and privately reserves the right to slip things like the Merida initiative into a war funding bill. A pox on both their houses.

The federal and state governments spend money on reading programs.
Has anyone stopped to think that perhaps these politicans cannot read? They may need some sort of tutoring?
They may be like those star atheletes who get college scholarships even though they are unable to read.
Perhaps these are the kinds of questions we should focus on in debates.

I noted this in another thread, with a link to the Baton Rouge Advocate’s article.
A Dem legislator slipped in an amendment containing language accepting the money into an unrelated bill at the last second and everyone else just went along with it because they didn’t know what it did. Stupidity in action, IMHO.
There was even a quote by the Speaker, a Republican, asking an aide “What does this amendment do?” and still voting for it even after getting no answer.

It’s not win-win.
He doesn’t want to have the state’s budget in the toilet in 2011, when he’s running for re-election. And if they accept the money, it will be in the toilet by then because the stimulus money will be exhausted and the state is stuck paying the higher rate mandated by accepting the funds.

haner on May 19, 2009 at 7:33 PM
Portland, as the sith lord would say, “your arrogance(and ignorance) blinds you”.
Jindal wasn’t elected yesterday. You may have just started paying attention to what he’s doing here, but the people living here have been paying attention to him since he first came on the scene in 2003. You don’t determine anything other than your opinion. To think this is his first “test” is ignorant and silly.
TTheoLogan on May 19, 2009 at 7:34 PM
He smoked more than her.
Mike Foster was largely seen as a “do-nothing” governor whose biggest accomplishments seem to be “discovering” Jindal to be the head of Dept. of Health and Hospitals and passing a law allowing motorcyclists not to wear a helmet.
Buddy Roemer was such a disaster that he couldn’t even get into the runoff in 1991, coming in 3rd behind previously-indicted Edwin Edwards and former KKK klansman David Duke.
I’m less sure about how to rank Dave Treen here since he was pretty much a placeholder for 4 years while Edwards was term-limited out. (Edwards had won 2 consecutive terms and had to sit out the election Treen won.)
teke184 on May 19, 2009 at 7:34 PM

OT, but ? Are these paragraph markers?
Back on topic: If they don’t take it, would Cali get it?
This is good experience for Jindal, for when he becomes president and has to deal with a dhimmicrat congress and senate.
What is Bobby’s next move, or doesn’t he have one?
Timothy S. Carlson on May 19, 2009 at 7:37 PM
How about a new law that states that politicians, national and state, have to prove a knowledge of a bill before being allowed to vote on it. A simple multiple choice quiz about the specifics of the bill that they have to pass before they can vote. If they can’t pass the quiz they are counted as an automatic “Present,” President Obama could not possibly object to an automatic Present. How nice if they had had this for the Porkulus Bill.
Mr A on May 19, 2009 at 7:37 PM
Jindal has some character flaws, many of which he knows how to adjust in order to win elections. He lost in 2003 because the northern louisianians thought
1.he was black
2.he was a muslim
3.something like that
He got elected to congress in SOUTH louisiana, spent the next several years traveling around NORTH louisiana in his spare time, and easily carried the state in 2007.

I say we give it a shot. Pick a lightly populated state (Wyoming for example. Hopefully I don’t offend anyone from that state, but I apologize in advance.) and right now, hold a poll on how the constituents feel government is doing. Note the results.
Now replace the state legislature with people randomly chosen from the phone book in that state. Let them run it for a year while the elected officials take a break from their terms (they’ll get that year back later). At the beginning of the year and the end of the year, ask the people of Wyoming if this random group of common people did a better job. The elected officials return to office. At the end of term, hold a poll.
If the elected officials do worse, they’re fired. We then simply pick random people from the phone book from now on.
Chaz706 on May 19, 2009 at 7:40 PM
The sad thing is that you know 80% of our legislators, Democrat and Republican, would fail such a quiz.
I’ve seriously come to the realization over the last couple of years that the reason we are in our current situation is mostly because we have morons running our government. And that the Republicans are just as guilty as the Democrats in the intelligence deficiency.
haner on May 19, 2009 at 7:41 PM
Perhaps not as bad as first seems? Gets Jindal off the hook and puts the LA GOP on it instead. Not so bad when you think that he MAY run for Prez. His record will be pure on this issue.

It’s bad in a local sense, to a degree. I’m good friends with a local state senator and know a lot of peeps in the repub party in the state. I really hate that they did this, of course, I’m assuming the democrats did too.

(fill in Star wars quote for me, I’m tired)-star wars character
Jindal is AWESOME. I have always liked him, and he has done nothing to change my opinion of him. He is a young man that is desperately needed amongst conservatives. His first shot out the gate on the National stage was a flop, and does not do him justice as he is normally 1000% better than that.
He has done great things as Governor and don’t expect him to stop now. If he is going to run in 2012, tests like this will come and go. I would vote for Bobby if he wins the nomination, as I would any CONSERVATIVE candidate. If you live in Louisiana TTheologan you should be proud of your Gov. I’m stuck with a liberal Shitbag Governor. I can only admire yours….

You know, I can’t even install the most basic of computer software without having to click “I agree” to the terms of service. Shouldn’t there be some way to make sure that a bill has been actually READ before it’s voted on? Like the bill is on computers and it can’t be voted on until the computer registers that the entire thing has been scrolled through? With a timer so it can’t just be scrolled through in 3 seconds and click “I agree?” IDK, just venting.
Frankly, the biggest problem the GOP has is that it has little to offer in place of Obama and NOTHING to offer in place of the current congressmen and women. If we didn’t learn with Clinton vs Dole that you can’t beat somebody with nobody, and we’re not taking all the golden opportunities where the Dems are shooting themselves in their feet so fast their gun barrells are overheating, then maybe we deserve to lose.

sven10077 on May 19, 2009 at 11:04 PM
Sven. You’re killing me, brah. Seriously. I’m afraid you’ve been fed a lot of misinformation about NOLA. There’s a lot bad to say, particularly about the Democrat-run city of New Orleans’ response, I agree, but things aren’t quite so dire as either the right or left claim for reasons of their own.
And by the way – that money (most people are under the impression that NOLA got $110 billion just for ourselves) included federal responses to Katrina, Wilma, and Rita, and it was spread out to the entire Gulf Coast. Furthermore, $20 billion of it was private flood insurance payouts. More little known facts on Katrina/NOLA here.
Laura on May 19, 2009 at 11:09 PM
Sven, we cross-commented… Yes, I agree, status quo ante is a problem.
But there’s something about this place; the music, the food, the history, I’m not sure what… it’s still special, in spite of it all.
Laura on May 19, 2009 at 11:12 PM
I’m in Vernon Parish, I go to NOLA a lot just to keep an eye out. NOLA got a disproportionate amount of Katrina aid just as Katrina got a lot more aid than Rita. Buddy delivered relief trailers to NOLA I am not the “expert” you are(no sarcasm) but then again sometimes distance adds perspective. NOLA’s “crisis” in the evacuation was voluntary I will die smiling at the memory of the Sugar Ray Nagin Aquatic Bus Park. Gulfport looked like an A-bomb had gone off but the Times-Picayune claims NOLA took three times the damage of all Mississippi which is a lie.
Florida copes with storms without the theatrics, Texas, the rest of Louisiana, MS, and Alabalma as well as Georgia the Carolinas and even the Mid Atlantic states cope….

Not holding Ohio up as a shining icon either our Cleveland problem goes back at least 65 years and in essence the state has just decided that electing enough donks will set the time machine back 40 years….

None of the GOP governors explained the issue in terms that had credibility. It wasn’t until the strings were snapped with CA that this issue had even a shred of credibility. Now, you know. You take the stimulus bill, and you’ll be on the phone with SIEU over $11.25 employees.
I think the reason, looking back, is that GOP governors did know about the strings, but they couldn’t articulate the problems.
It would have been viewed, and was, as fear-mongering.
CA now offers proof.

What happens when Jindal vetoes the bill?

I think he won’t veto. He’ll just lose.

I guess the New Orleans City Business paper has morons writing for them.
The Louisiana Workforce Commission are a bunch of idiots too.
So I’m an idiot for claming that unemployment in New Orleans is better compared to the rest of the nation with proof to back it up. Do you even live in Louisiana much less New Orleans?
The federal government has already thrown billions at the city for Katrina recovery. You claim it hasn’t been rebuilt so your answer is more money.
If New Orleans was “dying”, why are people coming here for jobs.
If anything is killing NOLA, it’s the idiot box known as City Hall that’s doing it. They’re screaming about emails rather than trying to do something constructive. The city is still using money from hurricane relief and even that has been tied up in red tape or defauded. Yet your answer is more money.
Businesses have been leaving the state for years before Katrina because of high taxes from Democrats that ran the state for decades. Your answer is to get that sweet sweet stimulus pork for unemployment, when unemployment is down compared to the rest of the nation, only to raise business taxes again and driving more jobs out of the state. Brilliant!
I only live here and really see whats going in New Orleans, yet I’m the idiot.
Quit getting your talking points about New Orleans from Anderson Cooper. There’s a lot more to New Orleans than the Superdome, Bourbon Street, and the 9th Ward.
I live in Lakeview (for two more weeks at least) and its coming along nicely. Lakeview was flooded badly just like the 9th ward but the media will never tell you that.
My inlaws bought a house here a year ago, moving from Algiers, and my brother-in-law is renovating a gutted house as well. Harrison Ave has boomed in the two years I lived here and will probably continue to do so. There are still gutted houses but there’s a lot of new construction going on.
Ah, good old
SleezevilleLeesville.I kid, I kid. I was stationed at Polk for nearly 3 years. Fun place.
