“Genocide”: AIDS activists go nuclear on Obama over broken promises on funding

posted at 8:09 pm on May 19, 2009 by Allahpundit

“Genocide” is way, way over the top but it does capture the depth of his critics’ outrage. This story’s been out there for a few days but flew under the radar of most bloggers consumed with Pelosigate and the torture battle. British media’s picked it up now, though, and the Global AIDS Alliance issued a withering statement today projecting the number of casualties that the funding shortfall will produce. Gruesome:

When President Barack Obama released his $3.6 trillion budget on May 7, he broke two campaign promises and created a total shortfall of $3.3 billion in US support for global AIDS funding through US bilateral AIDS programs, including PEPFAR, and for the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria. “President Obama also sent a message to world governments that it is acceptable to underfund global health, in particular the Global Fund,” said Dr. Zeitz. “The Global Fund is already facing a financial gap, and this will only make it worse by setting the wrong example.”…

Also speaking at the press conference was Felix Mwanza of the Treatment Advocacy and Literacy Campaign (Zambia). “It is not morally right for the President to cut down on the US global health contribution, especially on AIDS. Cutting the budget for global AIDS funding is tantamount to genocide, and Mr. Obama shall be held accountable for deaths that will ensue,” said Mr. Mwanza, quoting from his open letter to President Obama, which was sent to the White House on May 18. (See the links below for the full text of Mr. Mwanza’s letter.)

GAA estimates that as a consequence of President Obama’s broken promises on U.S. bilateral AIDS programs:

* One million people around the world won’t receive treatment for AIDS.
* 2.9 million women won’t receive services to prevent mother-to-child transmission of HIV.
* 27 million people won’t access sexual disease transmission prevention programs.
* 1.9 million orphans and other children affected by or vulnerable to HIV/AIDS won’t receive care and support services.

Hey, remember on Inauguration Day when Kenyans were saying, “This man is Jesus”? I think Jesus would have found the money in the budget somewhere. It’s only fitting that he’s not taking any heat for this in American media, though: Bush never got due credit from the left for his effort to fight AIDS in Africa, so symmetrically it makes sense that The One won’t get any blame. Although needless to say, there’d have been a media firestorm had Obama introduced the program and a Republican successor then tried to renege on funding it to the extent he promised during the campaign. Exit question: He can’t scrape together $3 billion by trimming a little fat in a budget of $3.6 trillion? Of course not — remember, this is a guy who couldn’t find a few million to keep that D.C. vouchers program going past his first term.

I can only imagine the reason he is not funding this is because it is part of Bush’s legacy.

Is it possible that the ONE hates Bush so much that he would let millions of Africans die rather than continue Bush’s program?

Bush never got due credit from the left for his effort to fight AIDS in Africa, so symmetrically it makes sense that The One won’t get any blame.

Bob Geldof gave him credit; perhaps he will have the guts to blame The One.

Mr. Geldof is an Irish rock and roll singer and longtime social activist who has helped, along with U2 rocker Bono, raise awareness about need in Africa. His most well known achievement is organizing the Live Aid concert in 1985, which raised money for debt relief for poor African countries.

But Mr. Geldof has remained closely engaged with African affairs since then, and he spoke off the cuff to reporters today who were waiting for a press conference with Mr. Bush and Rwandan President Paul Kagame.

Mr. Geldof praised Mr. Bush for his work in delivering billions to fight disease and poverty in Africa, and blasted the U.S. press for ignoring the achievement.

Mr. Bush, said Mr. Geldof, “has done more than any other president so far.”

“This is the triumph of American policy really,” he said. “It was probably unexpected of the man. It was expected of the nation, but not of the man, but both rose to the occasion.”

“What’s in it for [Mr. Bush]? Absolutely nothing,” Mr. Geldof said.

Mr. Geldof said that the president has failed “to articulate this to Americans” but said he is also “pissed off” at the press for their failure to report on this good news story.

“You guys didn’t pay attention,” Geldof said to a group of reporters from all the major newspapers.</blockquote>

Actually, the money is getting into the right hands this time around and millions of lives have already been saved. Well, I’m sure that AT LEAST Barry has really taken care of his brother in Kenya! Right?

Star20 on May 19, 2009 at 10:50 PM

It is outright hypocrisy to fund overseas abortions whilst causing a shortfall in the funds available for the AIDS project.

The Dems have little in the way of morals in these issues.

You might have a point. Somolia pirates didn’t attack American flagged ships when Bush was President. Bush’s popularity thwarted crimes on the high sea’s? Looks like a good headline.

Follow up story: Obama action increases crime against American’s just trying to do their job.

I’m reminded of a joke.

A family is at the zoo near the tiger cage, a little girl is caught in the tiger’s claws as it tries to pull the girl into the cage. A biker on a Harley Davidson is nearby and hears the panicked screams of the family members of the little girl. The biker gets off his motorcyle and runs to the girls aid. He grabs the girl but the tiger won’t let go. So the biker punches the tiger in the nose through the bars and the tiger let’s the little girl go. The family is estatic, thanking the biker who starts to walk away when stopped by a local reporter. The reporter say’s “that’s the most amazing thing I have ever seen, I want to report about it, give me your name”. The biker said “it was no big deal” but gives up his name when the reporter insists. The next day the biker picks up a paper and the headliner at the top of the first page read:

“Outlaw Biker Assualts African Immigrant And Steals His Lunch”.

I don’t wish ill will on anyone. But if the world is convinced their bread is buttered on the other side, let them live with it a while. That’s how one gains experience, living with your decisions.

Once again, Bush actually is what Obama pretends to be.

Just the same, can’t get too worked up about it. You know, we are actually having an economic crisis right now. There are a lot of Very Good Things to spend money on, but we just can’t afford to spend money we don’t have on all of them.

Of course, if the Dems would quit trying to take over American industries and enact their wish list of legislation for every dream they’ve been denied over the years, then we might actually be able to afford spending money on a good cause like this.

Like that’ll happend

He can’t scrape together $3 billion by trimming a little fat in a budget of $3.6 trillion?

He’s just not trying hard enough. I bet there is still $3 billion in the military budget he could cut. /s

Mallard T. Drake on May 20, 2009 at 3:13 AM

This is so disingenuous. He has INCREASED the funding from Bush, just not by the $1 Billion dollar a year allotment.

Gee, I wonder why.

Maybe because of the HUGE DEFICIT you constantly complain about.

It is articles like these that proves your hypocrisy.

ckoeber on May 20, 2009 at 3:39 AM

I bet they wish we still had Bush! Serves them right for falling for Obama’s lame campaign promises.

+1000. Did you see that FastCompany cover story from a few months back? China is politically wiring half the planet to its supply chain for raw materials.

ckoeber, you’re pathetic. Did he break a campaign promise or not? Yes, he did. Maybe another on needle exchange, too! Get off your knees and wipe your chin.

I’m happy with the additional funding on tropical diseases, though — money very well spent — so praise be to The One for that (and to Rahm’s brother).

Wait, you’re citing the San Fran Chronicle? Funny stuff.

If you want to refute what this AIDS group is saying, link an article that addresses what they’re claiming, not one that hardly mentions it.

Also, your argument about hypocrisy is ridiculous. We’re wasting hundreds of billions on worthless spending, but we can’t find money for worthwhile spending. Clearly what the majority of people here want is to cut the crap out of the budget, and then reallocate those funds to something that will actually do good in this world, not increase spending even more.

Barack Obama doesn’t care about black people.

DethMetalCookieMonst on May 20, 2009 at 8:21 AM

If I was a conspiracy nut I would say that this move was actually done to appease the gay community. You see, if the number of AIDS death in Africa rises then the percentage of gays with AIDS falls and the percentage of straights with AIDS rises. Then the gays could say “See, AIDS isn’t a gay disease.”

NOTE: I am well aware that straight people do get AIDS, but let’s be honest. As far as being sexually transmitted, it’s happened FAR more to gays then straights.

DethMetalCookieMonst on May 20, 2009 at 8:24 AM

I can only imagine the reason he is not funding this is because it is part of Bush’s legacy.

Is it possible that the ONE hates Bush so much that he would let millions of Africans die rather than continue Bush’s program?

dKap on May 19, 2009 at 8:13 PM

Doubt it, or else Gates would have been gone by now.
