Anderson Cooper: Hey, sorry for that “teabagging” joke but you kind of asked for it

posted at 6:18 pm on May 19, 2009 by Allahpundit

Saith Coop, “I think it’s an incorrect statement to say I was, in any way, trying to disparage legitimate protests.” Really? Watch the clip from last month and decide for yourself. The most telling moment here comes about halfway through when he defends himself by insisting the phrase was, after all, “used and adopted” by tea partiers. I admit to not having paid laserlike attention to how the parties were promoted but I don’t recall many protesters referring to themselves as “teabaggers” or their activities as “teabagging.” They mailed teabags to Obama and other politicians but that’s as close as it got to innuendo, which isn’t very close at all. Am I misremembering or is Cooper simply inventing facts to defect blame? Click the image to watch.

No, I do not recall “teabagging” being used by anyone actually participating in the protests or mailing tead bag.

But Ander surely is douche bagging that explantion.

myrenovations on May 19, 2009 at 6:22 PM

Media decided to discount the entire movement in order to make their crude childish jokes. It is not their job to decide the entertainment value of American citizens. I hope they ignore them at their own peril. Considering their ratings my hopes might be realized. Faster please.

Cindy Munford on May 19, 2009 at 6:22 PM

I’d say the real teabagging will begin in November 2012, but the likeliest winner is not correctly equipped for it.

Sekhmet on May 19, 2009 at 6:22 PM

OMG, I so don’t care.

Leftists with their “teabagging” jokes were acting exactly like toddlers saying “doodoo” and “peepee” because they think it’s baa-aa-aa-ad. Precisely on that intellectual level.

It is, however, pretty funny that Cooper feels bound to exhale so much CO2 “explaining” himself. May all his “explanations” be for such minor reasons.

We all misremember at times, but you aren’t in this case.

However, on a routine basis, members of the MSM seems to invent facts or selectively refer to facts, in order to promote themselves and their agenda.

His creepiness level got higher after the teabagging comment. There’s only so much that hair and eyes can do. The creepy perv thing is way too strong now. Ugh. Haven’t set eyes on him since I saw him remark about “teabagging,” and I have no future plans involving him.

Upstater85 on May 19, 2009 at 7:03 PM

I’m guessing Upstater85 has it right here. It’s easy to parse Cooper’s statement by making the simple assumption that the Tea Party protests were not “legitimate protests” in AC’s eyes… thus, he wasn’t in any way disparaging legitimate protests, he was disparaging and mocking illegitimate ones.
