Oh my: Jim Webb flip-flops, now opposes closing Guantanamo

posted at 1:55 pm on May 18, 2009 by Allahpundit

To be more precise: He now opposes closing it anytime soon but naturally is A-OK with closing it at some murky, distant time in the future. Which, as far as I can tell, means he holds the same position on it as George W. Bush or Dick Cheney. Moe Lane thinks this is poll-driven but I’m more inclined to believe that someone with a national security background like Webb’s knew all along that it was a bad idea to close it and was simply giving The One political cover until there was a fig leaf available to let him flip-flop. The new military commissions are that fig leaf, allowing him to pretend that all the alleged defects in Bush’s approach have been cured and therefore Gitmo’s no longer a problem, so a flip-floppin’ we go. The more intriguing question is whether he’s undercutting Obama by doing this or actually secretly helping him out. Superficially it’s a headache for the White House to have a prominent Democratic senator disagreeing with them on Sunday morning TV, but given the respect Webb commands, this gives The One plenty of new political cover to do some flip-flopping himself. Time to put the nutroots on suicide watch?

Sorry to give you this in two clips but you need to watch both (especially the second) to get the full flavor of just how sharp a reversal this is. The first vid focuses on Webb’s opposition to another Obama policy — namely, releasing the 17 Uighurs detained at Gitmo into the United States because they’re no longer a threat except, of course, that they very much are. But then, we already knew that. Click the image to watch.

“yea, uh, one day.”

“one day in the future some time at a further date to be announced.”

“at that time, which has yet to be determined, we will close gitmo.”

“eventually, when all the respective parties have come to some sort of consensus at one point in the future, we will close gitmo.”

“eventually.”

This was actually one of the better “This Week”s in recent memory. Curious George Stephy was actually acting almost like a journalist, and it was such a treat to see Katrina Van-de-moonbat’s head almost explode trading barbs with Ms Cheney.

JamesLee on May 18, 2009 at 2:04 PM

Just seems like Sen. Webb realizes that now that Democrats have total control of the federal government, some of them have to start saying and doing responsible things.

Oh and the comments over at ABC are stunning. There is a guy who says As a Republican… “I have uncovered much of the real torture that will come out in Sy Hersh’s book (ie rape of young iraqi boys videotaped in front of their mother’s, Cheney’s contract assassins, the pedophile ring contracted by Cheney & Rumsfeld)…”

Bat feces crazy, that one.

Webb will advocate closing Gitmo if it is still open when the next Republican president sits in the WH. Webb will then blame the Republican president for keeping it open long after it should have been closed. He will accuse the Republican president of lying about torture at Gitmo and call for Congressional investigations and a special prosecutor…to prosecute Republicans only of course. At least I live in Virginia so I can vote against this SOB again.

Bingo!

The more intriguing question is whether he’s undercutting Obama by doing this or actually secretly helping him out.

Webb is the forerunner for Obama’s upcoming Gitmo flip-flop. He’s providing cover and some semblance of reasonableness on military issues for Democrats, since he’s one of the few (if not the only) credible voices for Dems on this issue. (Why, I don’t know.)

With the exception of Pelosi and the CIA, conservatives should step away from many of the national security issues and let Obama naturally come around to the conservative position. He doesn’t dare allow an attack on his watch.

As far as Pelosi and the CIA are concerned, a few conservatives should monitor these events as they unfold, but let Cheney hammer her and then selectively chime in.

In both cases, conservatives shouldn’t get mired in the muck. Turn to the economy and Obama’s associated nonsense of universal health care, cap-and-trade, other piecemeal natioalization of the economy, and, if Obama nominates an unacceptable SCOTUS nominee, Obama’s SCOTUS nomination.

Please stop Obama from damaging the economy further.

James Henry “Jim” Webb, Jr. (born February 9, 1946) is the senior Senator from Virginia. He is also an author and a former Secretary of the Navy under President Ronald Reagan. He is a member of the Democratic Party.

A 1968 graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, Webb served as a Marine Corps infantry officer until 1972, and is a highly decorated Vietnam War combat veteran. During his four years with the Reagan administration, Webb served as the first Assistant Secretary of Defense for Reserve Affairs, then as Secretary of the Navy.

Dr Evil on May 18, 2009 at 2:58 PM

Obama leaped before he looked, and reality bites him in the butt. It was easy to sign an Executive Order, but now he needs to deal with the elephant in the room: What do we do with the terrorists detainees provocateurs of human-caused disasters?

Nobody wants them in foreign countries. Nobody wants them in U.S. courts or U.S. jails. Yes, Virginia, nobody wants them there either, which is why Webb backed out.

So the Prince of World Peace Hussein the First has four choices:

1. Release them somewhere, and accept the political consequences if they kill Americans.

2. Shoot them within a year.

3. Repeal the Executive Order and detain them indefinitely.

3. Try them with military tribunals.

Option (1) is too dangerous, option (2) would anger the Left, option (3) would be flip-flopping, and option (4) would be the unforgivable sin of what that brutal incompetent war-monger George W. Bush did for seven years.

So what’s a poor widdle Pwesident to DO when he’s twapped?

Speeches are beautiful. Reality bites.

I understand what you are saying, and it’s why I don’t criticize him. But, your argument is badly flawed: Almost two million men and about 7,000 women served in Vietnam, and many of them have a son or daughter in the military

That by itself does not qualify anyone for the U.S. Senate–and by itself does not provide a shield for criticism. If it did, we need to greatly expand the Senate, and the ‘statue of limitations’ for many crimes

You disprove yourself by mentioning Murtha: Service in Vietnam is Good, but what you do after that counts also

Webb ran a scummy dishonest campaign against a decent man, and has acted at times like a typical dishonest Demo. I don’t wish him any harm–I just wish he had lost to Allen ( and wish he will not win re-election )

George Allen did a lot of good things for Virginia. I have remarked on what he did for Indian Tribal Identification many times over by authoring the bill to return their tribal status. BobMbx on May 18, 2009 at 3:22 PM

Webb’s shifting partisan allegiances are well documented. He swung to the GOP due to his disgust with the post-Vietnam Democratic Party, recently telling George Will that Jimmy Carter’s decision to pardon the draft evaders was pivotal, but was never a Republican regular. He supported Bob Kerrey’s bid for the Democratic presidential nomination in 1992 and endorsed Democratic Sen. Chuck Robb over Oliver North in 1994 only to back George Allen over Robb in 2000.

Yet Iraq is the single biggest factor that drove Webb from the Republican Party. It is difficult to see how Webb’s Iraq prescience—he was antiwar long before the invasion—helps Miller. Memories of the 2000 Allen endorsement may fade after 11 former senior staffers to Robb announced their support for Webb. And Miller’s own background as president of the Information Technology Association of America (ITAA) provides opposition researchers just as much fodder as Webb’s voting history and writing portfolio.

With respect, Doctor Evil, the argument you made in that post is not valid because the premise is incorrect. “He served his country” does not preclude anyone from ‘disparaging’ him, because his service was forty years ago and we can legitimately disparage him for what he has done since then.

Regan appointed him SECNAV but there have been many sub-Cabinet appointees who deserve a LOT of disparagement. You can’t have a valid argument based on a ‘non sequitor’

NOW ( and during the past two years ) he is a U.S. Senator who displaced George Allen–and that is how he should be judged and evaluated.

I don’t agree with you that does not mean my points are not valid it only means you don’t wish to consider them.

Take this as my final response I have made my position clear.

Who is “Miller” in this quote?

ladyingray on May 18, 2009 at 3:28 PM

James Webb used to be a Republican before he was a Democrat he states it in his books. I have actually read some of what James Webb writes.

So he’s an amalgam of Kerry and Specter.

My opinion of GITMO hasn’t changed one iota. The facts about GITMO have not changed one iota either.

So when President Obortion and/or anyone else changes their position concerning GITMO, the real question is WHY?

The list of possible answers is short:

1. They didn’t know the facts when they decided to close GITMO (inexperience, ignorance, selective deafness). The facts were available and public.

2. They ignored the facts.

Either way, the Doofus Club strikes again.

Um, okay. What do you think about, say, Oliver North?

ladyingray on May 18, 2009 at 3:29 PM

Webb flip-flopped as soon as they mentioned the possibility of housing and trying the prisoners in Alexandria, Va. Lots of powerful voices there.

jintrabar on May 18, 2009 at 3:30 PM

Webb is no liberal democrat. He may not be republican, and for many people on this board politics is too simply republican vs. democrat, a bid childish for me but ok. Webb was a highly decorated combat marine and I do not think, no matter which party he is in, he would favor policies that hurt America or make America less safe. The guys son was in Iraq for a couple of years. Webb is the time of democrat that is needed a more conservative Scoop Jackson, Sam Nunn type.

And all the name calling on this board and some people’s inability to have a debate that is not quickly reduced to the lowest common level has turned this board into something like the Daily Kos or Huffington Post. I liked this place better when Michelle had her funny videos.

Let’s be glad that Webb opposes closing Gitmo.

arizonateacher on May 18, 2009 at 3:35 PM

Webb is the forerunner for Obama’s upcoming Gitmo flip-flop. He’s providing cover and some semblance of reasonableness on military issues for Democrats, since he’s one of the few (if not the only) credible voices for Dems on this issue. (Why, I don’t know.)

Webb used to be a Republican and served in the Dept. of the Navy under Reagan. He is a veteran also. He is also a good example why term limits may only have a limited effect on good governance. He is a political creature of Washington, a professional politician like the rest.

riverrat10k on May 18, 2009 at 3:36 PM

Webb is simply a political opportunist. He does not now – nor has he ever cared for anything beyond “James Webb” – if it’s good for Jimbo – then you’d better like it – and if not, then too bad.

Arrogant – this is the guy that got busted with the firearm entering Congress but then again – handguns were outlawed in D.C. at the time I believe. It doesn’t matter – because James Webb is a part of the “Lordship” class of Americans – and he is not to be challenged by lowly serfs as we.

I seem to remember a time when I was in the Navy when James Webb, the Secretary of the Navy – got into a bit of hot water over insisting that he be allowed to fly himself around in Navy fighters. Of course – the SECNAV is a civilian and shouldn’t be doing that. But whatever – hey, it’s James Webb and he’s above the law and most importantly – ABOVE YOU.

HondaV65 on May 18, 2009 at 3:37 PM

Okay, Doctor Evil and arizonateacher, you win ( jointly ): Webb is above criticism because he was a Marine.

arizonateacher, you need at least one specific example to even begin comparing this blog to “something like Kos or HuffPo”. If you are going to make such a grossly unfair and inflammatory statement you need to support it with evidence

Your statement that there’s been no debate “that is not reduced to the lowest common level” here also needs some sort of proof–to avoid being a juvenile insult, and false.

I judge Webb on how he ran his campaign and how he has acted as a Senator–and again, as I pointed out, I don’t publicly criticize him

Janos Hunyadi on May 18, 2009 at 3:44 PM

Sorry, when you put on the uniform of a politician, you have to take off the military uniform.

You can use your military service to show leadership experience (if you got that far).

You can’t use your service as a shield for political mistakes.

BobMbx on May 18, 2009 at 3:45 PM

Whatever Webb’s personal good attributes, he comes off as a nasty guy. Way nastier than McCain who was lampooned mightily for it. But I do wish we could recruit Republican equivilents of him for Blue States without the base throwing a fit.
