Palin hits Notre Dame for recognizing Obama

Via Gateway Pundit, the ‘Cuda braves the polls showing most Catholics approve of the invitation — to a greater extent than the public at large, in fact — and swings away:

Gov. Sarah Palin of Alaska, a strong pro-life advocate, weighed in on the issue with me by e-mail:

“My favorite grandpa, Clem James Sheeran, was Catholic. Irish to the core, his favorite place (other than church) was Notre Dame. I can’t imagine what he would think as the university recognizes someone who contradicts the core values of the Catholic faith by promoting an anti-life agenda. As we learned today, our nation is more pro-life than ever before; it is a very important time to strengthen the message that every baby is created for good purpose and has the potential to make this world a better place.”

While Palin understands this battle is about a fundamental value, Obama supporters trivialize it by suggesting it is about opening a dialogue with people of opposing views. Despite their belittling, this outrage is well deserved. By bestowing the degree on President Pro-Choice, a message is conveyed that he is a role model, someone deserving of recognition in the eyes of the university. Jenkins even said he is an inspiring leader.

Steele also gave thumbs down to the honorary degree this morning on Meet the Press. I’m tickled at what a mess this has turned into for The One: He doesn’t want his position on abortion coming under a media microscope and eroding his advantage among Catholics, but of course he couldn’t turn down the invite lest it look like he was snubbing the Church. The best outcome for him probably would have been Notre Dame pulling the plug weeks ago before the protests picked up steam and the press started paying attention. On the other hand, given the heat he’s taking from the left on counterterror policy, among other issues, reminding progressives he’s a fellow traveler by pissing off pro-lifers isn’t the worst thing he could be doing right now. And considering how high his approval rating is among Catholics, the backlash to this would have to blow up quite a bit further before it does him any real damage.

The speech is set for this afternoon; he will indeed touch on abortion, doubtless in the context of “dialogue” and “understanding,” so we’re bound to have some sort of video tonight. From what I can tell, the only prominent Catholic who doesn’t have an opinion on this one way or the other is, er, the Pope, displaying the sort of squishiness he’s known for when it comes to balancing Church dogma with good relations with liberal Catholic politicians and their constituents. Way to take a stand. I’m going to poll you guys on this, not because there’s much doubt where you’ll come out but because it’s useful to remember there are two distinct issues here: One is simply inviting Obama to speak, the other is awarding him an honorary degree. According to the conference of U.S. bishops, those who defy the Church’s fundamental moral beliefs “should not be given awards, honors or platforms which would suggest support for their actions.” Where does this shake out?

The only time she gets MSM coverage is when they think they can damage her. She has reasonable positions on all major issues (not just the “hot” ones and will make a fine replacement for Obama in 2012.

That is Palin’s strength

She is consistent in her principles. The press will publicize her stand if they disagree and they will disagree a lot. The press dislikes her refusal to capitulate to such a degree they carry her message for her

This is how Reagan was promoted. The press could not resist mocking him. They could not comprehend his horrific beliefs would be seductive to a starved public

The press knows her appeal although they and the RINOs are promoting a myth that she is finished. At this moment, she has the upper hand

I know enough!

You are just as much slight of hand as those who like to shift blame. You do not understand the role of the Pope, yet you choose to assume much.

The Pope speaks for the Church yet the Church is not the Pope.

He has said as much as should be said which is more than enough. There is no confusion when it comes to what he states that which the Church believes. Anything else is just fodder for you with the soundbite appetites.

What is happening is not the fault of the Pope, more so, it is the failure of the Bishops of the United States.

I think she’d make a terrific senator President for Alaska America eventually.

Humm. Was it not some of the same polling that gave us McCain in ‘08? Didn’t McCain rise in the primary almost exclusively by becoming the favorite of the leftist media; i.e. the NYT endorsement?

I have developed a different way of evaluating candidates and polling data. In my method, Palin is showing far ahead of when the media wants us to think she is, and that is determined by the degree of venom with which the media and the rest of the left, including the RINO’s, attack and try to diminish her. IF they really thought she had no chance they would rush to make her the Republican candidate, believing that doing so would make a second Obama term an almost assured thing. That they do not want her in the running makes it clear that they do not want her to compete with their own Democrat candidate.

How sane is it to allow the left to continue to decide what candidates to run on the right? They will always try to help the right select the weakest candidate. Their hate for Palin is proof positive that she scare the hell out of them. Now why would she scare them if they really thought she was a bumpkin that had no chance of winning?

You need to go back and read the names at the bottom of the list. In the “blogger poll” linked to on the same page, she came in second (after Jindal, who took first in both polls).

It’s all a matter of which “pundits” you choose to believe.

I think Bobby Jindal learned quite a bit from Sarah Palin’s first outing in national politics. She will take quite a bit of time to recover from the tactical mistake of trying to fight the enemy on their ground. She also identified for Jindal the “Benedict Arnolds” of the Republican party — the guys with the smiles on their faces and the knives in their hands. Jindal also has, obliquely, Obama as a mentor — for, after all, how many times was Obama on Hardball, and how many free-flowing pressers did Obama give? And, last but not least, he has that skin color that prevents a whole lot of racial finger-pointing by the Left.

That said, I think Sarah will recover, but not enough soon enough to be the top of the next ticket.

Palin hits Notre Dame for recognizing Obama

Sarah Palin is tough, a resilient competitor, and as much as the MSM are attempting to tarnish her, she’ll be back even better. She’s just to good to keep down.

byteshredder on May 18, 2009 at 11:05 AM

She’s saying that his speaking is offensive. That’s the same thing as saying he should not speak.

AnninCA on May 17, 2009 at 1:07 PM

Actually that’s a typical progressive/liberal misconception and viewpoint. Progressives think that if what you say is offensive, you shouldn’t be allowed to say it. Conservatives generally believe that you can say it, but be prepared to defend it because we’ll call BS when appropriate and call you an idiot if you act/sound like one.

Progressives generally have such low self esteem that they find that position untenable, because that would mean they were constantly being forced to defend illogical positions instead of being able to just shout down the opposition.

You mean the one that picks Haley Barbour as a future leader of the party? Maybe it doesn’t mean what you think it means.
