Shock: Huntsman quits as Utah gov to be Obama’s ambassador to China; Update: I couldn’t say no, says Huntsman
posted at 9:45 am on May 16, 2009 by Allahpundit
And to think, some people accuse centrist Republicans of being Democrats in disguise.
The move is freighted with political intrigue. Huntsman, who speaks fluent Mandarin Chinese, quickly emerged after November as one of the leading moderate GOP voices…
Huntsman, who met with Obama’s transition team to discuss energy policy, was in Washington on Friday night, ahead of a planned Saturday announcement by the White House, The Salt Lake Tribune reported. Several Utah news organizations said the governor will resign and accept the appointment.
Huntsman, 49, served a Mormon mission in Taiwan. The governor and his wife, Mary Kaye, adopted a daughter, Gracie Mei, from China in 1999. In 2006, he led a trade mission to China “because of their prominence on the world stage and the way in which they are growing so rapidly,” he told the Deseret Morning News of Salt Lake City.
So much for the great moderate hope in 2012. What’s his angle here? Three possibilities: (a) Despite all appearances, he was never thinking of running for president. (b) He was thinking of running, but he’s enough of a patriot that he couldn’t say no when the president called on him. (c) He was aiming at 2016 all along and this is actually a brilliant move to burnish his bipartisan cred and his foreign-policy gravitas in advance, especially insofar as it makes him a player with a rising superpower like China. My only question is, how does he get back on the national stage after he’s done as ambassador? He could run against Utah’s lone Democratic congressman, I guess, but that’s not much of a perch from which to launch a presidential bid. Bob Bennett is 76 years old, but his Senate seat’s up next year; even if he’s planning to retire, Huntsman’s not going to quit Team Barry so soon to run for it. I can only assume he’s eyeing Orrin Hatch’s seat, which is up in 2012. Hatch will be 78 at the time, which isn’t old for a Senator but isn’t young either. If he does run for another term, though, then Huntsman’s frozen out. Maybe his interest in China is such that he simply couldn’t turn down the opportunity, whatever it might mean for his future ambitions.
Needless to say, in coopting a potential rival, it’s a typically cagey move by The One.
Update: To expand on that last thought, I don’t think anyone on Obama’s team considered Huntsman a serious threat to beat him in 2012 but they’re obviously keen for the public to perceive the GOP as “far right.” Hence their obsession with Rush. Huntsman was a threat to that strategy so they needed to get him off the national stage and as far away as possible. Mission accomplished.
Update: Tapper’s got terrific background on Huntsman’s relationships with the White House and with China. The money quote from this morning’s announcement:
Huntsman today said he “never expected” as national co-chair of John McCain’s presidential campaign to be standing there. But when the president asks for service, he said, “that to me is the end of the conversation.” Huntsman said first in Mandarin, then English, a Chinese saying: “Together we work. Together we progress.”

Politics is a dirty business. Most people don’t see it the way you do. Which is why Obama is in office.

Hmmm…”Obama is appealing to te great swing middle.” No, he fooled them. But that aside, why do you believe the so-called Moderates represent anyone? I still haven’t found a good definition of what a polticial Moderate is, other than someone who stands for nothing. And I’m not certain that’s a good thing. I have more respect for Obama and the Far Left, who at least stand for something and are willing to work to accomplish it, than I do for people who swing whichever way the wind blows.
And the Dems have forced out just as many if not more so called Moderates as the Repubs, courtesy of the Far Left. To be honest, as a former Dem, I think the Democrat Party has become far more extreme than the Republican.

GLENN BECK LOVES HIS FATHER, NOT THE SON.
His father is a great man and supported Romney, unlike his son who was in the tank for mccain.

Rather liberal with the insults there. And I thought it was the elitist liberals who looked down on the electorate? It was the same “not very smart” electorate who voted for Bush twice.
Grow Fins on May 16, 2009 at 11:07 AM
Maybe Obama is not removing a potential to him in 2012, but he’s manipulating the field of candidates to get the one person he wants to run against – Romney.
Obama, being a politically shrewd man, can see the obvious; his potential contender will be one of the “Big 3″ – Palin, Huckabee or Romney. Out of those 3, he thinks he fares best against Romney. Huntsman was a potential threat to Romney’s candidacy; by removing him from the field, this helps Mitt (of the 3 likely candidates).

Facts are facts. A third of the electorate considers themselves politically moderate. So, your contempt for moderation notwithstanding, they will continue to give their votes to those politicians they perceive as being willing to bend on ideology to accommodate differences of opinion.

We’ll see if Huntsman whores for Obama on abortion, like Hillary did on human rights, as long as the Chinese keep buying US bonds.

How many times did the Left deny Bush as their president in the past eight years. Please.
I’m delighted that Axelrod dispatched Grow Fins with all the talking points.
As someone said above, I’m from the Midwest, and I too never heard of Huntsman until Frum whined about him. Who cares? From what I’ve read in the past few day or so, the guy seems perfect for this position. Let’s hope he can keep the peace with China so that it doesn’t call us on our debt as Obama continues his reckless spending spree.
Now, let’s get back to reaming Obama about his ND appearance and his laughable attempt to paper over his resumption of Bush’s military tribunals.

People aren’t asking for moderates…they want leadership. Republicans are acting like jesters. Moderates were tolerable during the Reagan years because we had leadership. A goal they could stick to in spite of there leftist leanings. A message they could carry to the people and still relate to changing demographics.
Now a moderat means…rip on your party. It doesn’t work thay way, but moderates are generallly gutless people looking for direction. If the dems provide it they will follow. It is pretty simple really.

Your Precedent isn’t even really American. He was raised in Indonesia and is more representative of that country than ours – he hates America. Which is all I’ve been saying! This is what Obama’s choice of Huntsman is all about. It’s not about who has or hasn’t heard of him. Huntsman is a popular, recently re-elected governor of what is arguably the most conservative state. And, although he is moderate, he’s no RINO.
The key characteristic of a RINO is that they cave to the left at every opportunity so they can boast about their bi-partisan credibility. Schwartzenegger,
Specter(guess we don’t have to count him anymore), and the Senators from Maine all qualify. Huntsman does not. Social cons just decided to go nuclear on him because he said he thought JimBob should be allowed to visit his boyfriend in the ER.RINOs also don’t manage stable economies during recessions. They panic and look for big government solutions – which is why California’s economy is indistinguishable from Michigan’s. The current economic downturn has nearly doubled Utah’s unemployment rate – from just under 3% to about 5% – still statistically “full employment” – despite hitting it’s highest rate in at least 10 years.
Good news, only slightly off topic – Bennett is receiving a primary challenge from the right. Utah’s AG, Mark Shurtleff, will be challenging him for his senate seat next year.

Now I am just going to lay it on the line. There are a lot of people out there who are not voting for democrats bases on shared beliefs. They vote for them so that they can keep being a drain on society and keep the welfare checks rolling in. How else can you explain the Prop 8 vote in California? The black community has a lot of core conservative beliefs, but they are willing to vote for the people who have actually victimized them by making them dependent on government for support.

You equate those in neither major party with Moderates, when the statistics show they are Fiscal conservatives.
And Barry was elected last election with only 30.1% of the vote of the TOTAL of Registered Voters (including those who chose not to vote).

I think that pyschologically it’s more pleasant to claim to be a Moderate than it is to take a stand. What someone says and then does, as per voting, may not be the same. How may people claimed they voted for Obama because of his principles but actually based their vote on race? Is a liberal a moderate if he is for abortion but against the death penalty? Is a conservative a moderate if he is for the death penalty but against abortion?
I have an old Webster’s dictionary, dated 1959, that gives one of the definitions of a moderate as “one of conservative views and actions.” Has the definition changed?
I am for waterboarding but against torture. I consider myself a person who is reasonable and without extreme views, a moderate but also a conservative. I agree that their strategy is for the public to perceive the GOP as far right. But I don’t think that the existence of centrist Republicans on the national stage undercuts that strategy, as long as those people are working with the White House. This cleaves the GOP into two: those who work with the White House and are rejected by the base, and the base. Since most serious presidential candidates will come out of the latter group and will have to cater to it, the more it’s seen by the public as marginal and extreme, the better for the Democrats.
For example, I think that Snowe and Collins voting with the Democrats helps them politically, and raising their profiles will as well. The rejected appointment of Gregg had the same objective, and would have given them the same advantage. This offer to Huntsman seems to fit in line with that.

I am shocked TOTUS didn’t pick Rangle. I hear he does great work stretching his dollars and cutting corners on his taxes!
Why didn’t he choose Dodd, could have got the USA a sweetheart deal on the money we owe China!
How about Maxine Waters or Diane Fienstien, they could at least snookered China into bailout money for their husband’s banks!

HotAir commenters: FYI.
He gets a star for the day from Axelrod and Soros. But at what point should he be re-stocking his tinfoil supply.
Seriously. WTF?

The job description presuambly includes groveling to the Chinese to get them to buy more bonds and to not provoke a military confrontation . And please don’t invade Taiwan.
All while living in the filthy air in Beijing.

This troll has generated a lot of page views for Hot Air, helping to finance the best conservative site on the web.
Irony!

stenwin77 on May 16, 2009 at 11:53 AM
LOL! Why do I get the feeling if Huntsman is such a big deal, growsfin wouldn’t have to tell us a thousand times it is big deal? The irony!

That’s very true, that the roots go further back, but what we have now is the re-emergence of the exact coalitions of the 60′s (black militants and white guilters/self-haters) coming back as those who idolize that time in history are infesting the media, academia, … and have been freed to lie their azzes off, mostly because Bush was far too soft on them. They saw that Dan Rather was allowed to try and turn a national election, using a fraudulent document, without being charged with anything. They saw that John Walker Lindh was allowed to fight against the US without being charged with treason. They saw the WaPo and New York Slimes being given free reign to publish facts that would get an ordinary person charged with espionage. They saw all these seditionist and treasonous leftists being allowed to carry out their treason without any real repurcussions. So they just went hog-wild with the lies and deception and now we have this anti-American junta occupying the White House and Capitol Hill. But, not just any anti-AMerican leftist junta. We have a reanimation of the 60′s, itself.
It will end as the 60′s did, but 100000 times worse, as they are not just running around on the streets causing problems, but holding the actual levers of power. Our nation only has a 20% chance, by my estimation, of surviving this intact.
THere’s no question about its failure. Even the Traitor-in-Chief talked about that in his “unsustainability” speech – about his own fiscal policies (though he wouldn’t say that, obviously). But that failure will result in the outright confiscation of WEALTH by this junta. Not income. WEALTH!
Even though all Soviet programs were disasters and failures, Russia still couldn’t get out of the system for decades and decades (and are heading back into it, too). This is why Rush was right about hoping that The Precedent fails. It’s not enough that the policies fail. That’s a surety. But even failed policies, as with the Bolsheviks, can hamstring a nation for a long, long time.
Welcome to the Bolshevik US. It’s going to be much uglier than anyone can imagine.

It’s a drag having those comic book characters of yours in the White House and Congress.

Aww. Don’t pick on Grow Fins. His ‘filter’ is broken and algae and fish poop is clouding his view…

The farce is strong in this discussion.
It must be a drag sometimes to have to moderate such inanity, but praise Allah for doing it… ;p

Give me a break. No one outside of Utah even knows who this guy is. This is absolutely meaningless to the GOP’s 2012 prospects. If the economy continues going south, they can run just about anyone in 2012 and win. If it turns around, no one will be able to beat Obama. Those are the facts of 2012, and this guy from Utah hasn’t a thing to do with it.
I will never understand why Republicans and conservatives continue to be such easy prey for MSM/democrat talking points. Here’s a tip: If the MSM says “this is just terrible for the Republican Party” it means it isn’t. If they say “this is a real coup for Obama” it means they’ve been horrified by Obama’s amateur presidency for a while now and are looking for anything — anything — to bring them out of their malaise.

Well then why don’t you write something interesting we can respond to?

They do now. One basket isn’t the whole game, but it’s still a score, and this one’s a three-pointer.
