Shock: Huntsman quits as Utah gov to be Obama’s ambassador to China; Update: I couldn’t say no, says Huntsman

And to think, some people accuse centrist Republicans of being Democrats in disguise.
The move is freighted with political intrigue. Huntsman, who speaks fluent Mandarin Chinese, quickly emerged after November as one of the leading moderate GOP voices…
Huntsman, who met with Obama’s transition team to discuss energy policy, was in Washington on Friday night, ahead of a planned Saturday announcement by the White House, The Salt Lake Tribune reported. Several Utah news organizations said the governor will resign and accept the appointment.
Huntsman, 49, served a Mormon mission in Taiwan. The governor and his wife, Mary Kaye, adopted a daughter, Gracie Mei, from China in 1999. In 2006, he led a trade mission to China “because of their prominence on the world stage and the way in which they are growing so rapidly,” he told the Deseret Morning News of Salt Lake City.
So much for the great moderate hope in 2012. What’s his angle here? Three possibilities: (a) Despite all appearances, he was never thinking of running for president. (b) He was thinking of running, but he’s enough of a patriot that he couldn’t say no when the president called on him. (c) He was aiming at 2016 all along and this is actually a brilliant move to burnish his bipartisan cred and his foreign-policy gravitas in advance, especially insofar as it makes him a player with a rising superpower like China. My only question is, how does he get back on the national stage after he’s done as ambassador? He could run against Utah’s lone Democratic congressman, I guess, but that’s not much of a perch from which to launch a presidential bid. Bob Bennett is 76 years old, but his Senate seat’s up next year; even if he’s planning to retire, Huntsman’s not going to quit Team Barry so soon to run for it. I can only assume he’s eyeing Orrin Hatch’s seat, which is up in 2012. Hatch will be 78 at the time, which isn’t old for a Senator but isn’t young either. If he does run for another term, though, then Huntsman’s frozen out. Maybe his interest in China is such that he simply couldn’t turn down the opportunity, whatever it might mean for his future ambitions.
Needless to say, in coopting a potential rival, it’s a typically cagey move by The One.
Update: To expand on that last thought, I don’t think anyone on Obama’s team considered Huntsman a serious threat to beat him in 2012 but they’re obviously keen for the public to perceive the GOP as “far right.” Hence their obsession with Rush. Huntsman was a threat to that strategy so they needed to get him off the national stage and as far away as possible. Mission accomplished.
Update: Tapper’s got terrific background on Huntsman’s relationships with the White House and with China. The money quote from this morning’s announcement:
Huntsman today said he “never expected” as national co-chair of John McCain’s presidential campaign to be standing there. But when the president asks for service, he said, “that to me is the end of the conversation.” Huntsman said first in Mandarin, then English, a Chinese saying: “Together we work. Together we progress.”

Now it’s clear why this jackass has been pandering to Obama . . . he wanted something. Good riddance to another RINO and self serving politician.

If he’s that easy moved off track we don’t need him as Pres.

Agreed, RobCon. China will have a larger role on the world stage, no secret, eh?
Plus, if Obi-bama completely sinks the USA, Huntsman and family have a place on the winning team.

I have to wonder if the GOP will ever get it’s game on when Obama makes such a bipartisan slam-dunk.

bambi’s team is generally pretty shrewd. and this sounds like a great pick for bambi’s team. besides, if Huntsman speaks at least one of the dialects, he’s a step ahead.
but wonder why bambi’s team came out & said several weeks ago that they feared Huntsman most in ‘12? maybe they really do & that is why they appt’d him.

Brilliance? Really? He got a dull guy from Utah that I’m sure 98 percent of the country hasn’t heard to be an ambassador. And this is brilliant how?
terryannonline on May 16, 2009 at 9:56 AM
and maybe it was never Huntsman’s desire to lead the GOP anywhere. maybe he really wants to be amb. to China. if so, congrats to him.
and therefore the GOP has this problem: where is our bench? don’t we have a good crop of 2d stringers to step up when the Huntsmans move on to national or int’l stages?
that’s what we need to develop.
kelley in virginia on May 16, 2009 at 9:56 AM
Well, Obama’s team keeps taking out the RINOs out of GOP. Doing conservative work for us. Good riddance.

He has a great family. His father is renowned because of the Huntsman Cancer Center and his dedication to trying to eradicate cancer. His dad went over to Azerbaijan after their horrible earthquake and helped rebuild the country. His grandfather, a great man, was beloved by the Mormon people and just died a couple of years ago in his 90’s. So you can see why he would be elected in Utah. Not that we wanted such a lib, but that has been a recent unfolding.

I posted this on the other link in response to someone indicating why he had such high approval rating.
He was a great supporter of mccain, and agreed with his policies – so yes a Rino. I think he wanted a job in his administration. His dad supported Romney.

Any Republican who takes a position with Barry is person-non-grata at this point, because ANY bipartisan cover for the dems undermines the future ability to turn around the damage that Barry is afflicting on the country…
phreshone on May 16, 2009 at 9:58 AM
Isn’t this a smart move politics wise? As we learned last year, Democrats only respect being a Governor if you have millions of welfare seeking dopes living in your state.

Ambassador to China… He can be all over the television talking about his experience in the country that is keeping us in financial servitude. China will only grow more and more important and he’ll have all the tools needed to keep himself in the spotlight, if he so chooses.

Given the confirmation problems Ogabe’s nominees have been having, doesn’t this mean that Huntsman is one of the few candidates who not only is qualified for the post, but won’t get “Borked” in either confirmation hearings or even vetting.
(I think this speaks to the dearth of suitable nominees on the Left myself.)
It’s the first non-idiotic nominee Ogabe’s made–is he finally on a learning curve as POTUS?

Utah has also been pushing for a second Congressional seat from what I remember, but if Huntsman wants back in he can probably find a path. Bush I was also an ambassador to China at one point, wasn’t he?
I do think Huntsman took a blowtorch to his bridge to the GOP with this one, but I’m not sure he cares. He has financial independence, and can probably assist his faith by making more connections in China for the LDS church.
cs89 on May 16, 2009 at 10:09 AM
Polling data doesn’t do you any good when you can’t get conservatives elected. And Rush and Cheney outfront as the voices of conservativism, all the “polling data” in the world won’t stop the GOP from ending up where it’s headed–a white, regional Southern party that appeals to old people.

Probably depends on how China acts in the next couple of years towards the U.S. and how the administration reacts in return.
There was a report this week that China has started war-gaming for a hypothetical Pacific war with the U.S., and there’s always the possibility the Chinese will try to test Obama on Taiwan. If the administration fails to grow a pair in response to a more aggressive China outside its borders, and Huntsman were to resign in protest, that could earn him some foreign policy street cred with the GOP base.
jon1979 on May 16, 2009 at 10:15 AM
Again this is absolute drivel. If you were take a poll of Republicans about future candidates a good percentage would say “Huntsman who?” You are placing too much importance. Nobody cares. And nobody cares enough to be “divided.” But I give props for creativity. You have to be “creative” to find “brilliance” in a mundane and rather dull pick for ambassador. You can give Chris Matthews a run for his money.

Never heard of this guy before a story awhile back that the Dems were saying he was the Repubs best hope, which means absolutely nothing to me. If Repubs were willing to go with a Mormon, Romney seems much more likely to have success, especially after Obama finishes destroying the economy. Maybe in 2012 Americans will want jobs. Maybe not.
blue13326 on May 16, 2009 at 10:15 AM
It’s getting so Republicans can’t do anything–sneeze, f*rt, talk or breathe–without some Leftoid declaring it’s the sure sign that the GOP is finished.

We haven’t seen that that’s the case. Wow, did Obama win a 49-state, 25-point landslide last November? I don’t think so. And if his policies are out of line with the opinions held by the country at large, he’s in trouble eventually.
It’s because they know they’re on thin ice.

Age and résumé of experience aside, what ideological difference actually distinguishes Orrin Hatch from Jon Huntsman? If it’s the senate seat that Huntsman wants, he’d have it as soon as Hatch retires anyway. Collecting the CHINESE ambassadorship is international experience prepping Huntsman to one-up Romney whose sole claim to fame is utilizing CAPITALISM to make money. Huntsman’s voyage to China will enlighten him to the virtues of the new Chinese fascist-communist Marxism to sell at home when his stint’s over.

Grow Fins on May 16, 2009 at 10:24 AM
Yeah whatever…Huntsman is practically a political unknown fence sitter who never made any significant decision in his life. His influence on the Repbulican Party has been nil to none. Obama chose him either because he couldn’t find someone who had experience and background with the Chinese in his own party, a good possibility. Or Huntsman secrety campaigned for the position, it’s well-known he spoke fondly of his experiences in China and I imagine he wanted the prestige. So why take an outside chance on becoming President when you can get what you really want this easily?
This doesn’t affect the Republican Party at all, except in the minds of Liberal Loons and the WH…basically one and the same.

Allah – McCain, Specter, Snowe et al have proven that co-opting so-called “republican moderates” is much easier than you think.
The Republican party is saturated with these weasels whose sole intent, it seems, is to destroy the party from within. And it seems like the GOP is about to aid them in that destruction by employing the so-called “Rahm strategy”. Which means they intend to go out and actively recruit even more of these “moderates”.
It’s time conservatives turn up the pressure and purge the party of these “moderates” once and for all, or start thinking seriously about establishing a Conservative Party.
