More Gingrich: Say good night, Nancy; Update: Rove piles on

posted at 2:02 pm on May 16, 2009 by Allahpundit
Share on Facebook | printer-friendly

A second strike after yesterday’s preemptive nuking. His musings about her political future come near the end; hit play, give it a few seconds to buffer all the way up, then skip to 2:55. After burying the story the day before, the NYT’s now in full propaganda mode on her behalf, laughing off the very idea that something like this might sink her. Gingrich is dead on, though: It’s no longer about what she was told at the September 2002 briefing (okay, it’s partly about that) but rather her willingness to use the Speaker’s platform to impugn the CIA as serial liars. If she has evidence, let’s see it. If not, she’s an even more disgraceful liar than we thought. Hand the gavel to Hoyer.

This was taped before last night’s excruciating “blame Bush” climbdown, so how that affects Newt’s calculus about her staying on we’ll have to wait to see. Meanwhile, a thorny question for Republicans: How hard should the right push for her to go? Steve King’s already called on her to step down, but the more we beat up on her, the more the left will feel obliged to circle the wagons instead of hanging her out to dry. What’s our next move?

Update: Here’s Rove on “Fox & Friends” this morning scoffing at her “blame Bush” nonsense. He doesn’t think the Democrats will boot her but he’s right that she’s damaged goods. Note his vivid description of her performance this week at the very end.

What’s our next move?

Keep hammering on this, but don’t call for her to step down. Let her become the ‘face’ of congressional democrats. In fact, make her the ‘leader of the congressional democrats’. This will only help the republicans in the 2012 mid-terms, assuming the RNC doesn’t sweep in under the rug in the name of bi-partisanship.

Meanwhile, a thorny question for Republicans: How hard should the right push for her to go?

Republicans who are not currently in Congress can push as hard as they want.

But our Republicans in Congress should watch quietly, with nothing more than a slight grin.

Keep hammering her. If the democrats circle the wagons they’ll end up being the losers.

SouthernGent on May 16, 2009 at 2:10 PM

Beat her to pulp. Don’t spare her. She should be rotting in Supermax for endangering world security.

promachus on May 16, 2009 at 2:10 PM

What’s our next move?

Let the CIA get her. Or continue to weaken her with a thousand leaks.

Which is better?: a weakened Pelosi or a newly-installed Hoyer?

I’d want Hoyer.

SteveMG on May 16, 2009 at 2:11 PM

What’s our next move?

Our next move is to sit back and watch this entire story disappear with Nancy walking away completely unscathed and carrying on with business as usual.

There will be another big old distraction come Monday morning that will wipe this story away.

Knucklehead on May 16, 2009 at 2:12 PM

It’s no longer about what she was told at the September 2002 briefing (okay, it’s partly about that) but rather her willingness to use the Speaker’s platform to impugn the CIA as serial liars.

If Obama wants her to stay she is staying. If he wants her gone say goodbye.

Her lying is irrelevant and so is Newt’s opinion!

patrick neid on May 16, 2009 at 2:13 PM

Let her keep going. She’ll hang herself eventually, and take her friends with her.

capejasmine on May 16, 2009 at 2:13 PM

I’m torn, Allah. I’d hate to lose her as a foil, but how often do we get to chase one of these d-bags out of town?

I could really use the cardio.

Kensington on May 16, 2009 at 2:16 PM

What’s our next move?

To defend the War on Terror and its neccessity. To counter the “Its torture” memo the far left is pushing.

The democrats want us to focus on bad things done to the enemy in the WOT. We need to focus on why this is a good fight and the democrats are the ones on the wrong side.

William Amos on May 16, 2009 at 2:20 PM

I say we keep pushing for her to go. Here’s why:

It is very unlikely that anybody in the Bush administration is going to ever be prosecuted for authorizing “torture”. Obama doesn’t want to go down that road.

Could you imagine a scenario, however, where Cheney, Rumsfeld, Rice, Wolfowitz, Feith and even George W Bush get off scott-free in this torture issue, and the only person that pays a price at all is Nancy Pelosi, a Democrat.

The left would go ballistic. And look at the position it puts Obama in. He either has to stand by and watch as his party’s leader in Congress goes down in flames, which will enrage the Kos, MoveOn, Code Pink crowd. Or he has to side with her against his own CIA, which is already mad at him for releasing the “torture” memos. A no-win for Obama.

Also, if Pelosi is the only person that pays a price in this the left will put enormous pressure on Obama to go through with prosecutions of Bush officials, which will further polarize the country and prevent him from “bringing us together”.

We just have to keep the heat on Pelosi and sit back and watch the left fracture.

Cheney, you magnificent bastard.

JohnInCA on May 16, 2009 at 2:20 PM

Again Pelosi wont be torpedo for a foreign Policy gaffe. The GOP needs to make her the scapegoat in the Obama economic fiasco that is just on the horizon.

The big buck dems will put pressure on the bluedogs and others to push Nancy aside when they feel she is too beholded to King Obama.

They cant hit Obama without a rebound but they can slap Pelosi to send a message to the ONE.

William Amos on May 16, 2009 at 2:22 PM

How hard should we push? Very hard. MAKE THEM circle the wagons so she clings to power longer. She is a liability and Hoyer would be much more effective at this point.

BuzzCrutcher on May 16, 2009 at 2:24 PM

I certainly hope she doesn’t step down. She is more valuable to us as the Speaker Heading into the 2010 elections.

Dems whine about Pelosi treatment

“I’m sure Karl Rove is proud that the Republicans found a way to criticize Nancy Pelosi for not doing enough to stop the same illegal practices that they supported and continue to defend,” said Rep. John Yarmuth (KY.). “It’s clearly a desperate attempt to find any political traction with an American public that has given up on them.”

“I have known Speaker Pelosi for more than 45 years, and I believe her. The Republicans’ focus on what she knew and when is a political distraction meant to divert attention from the question of whether the Bush Administration allowed torture to be used,” said Democratic Majority Leader Steny Hoyer.

“I think there is so much embarrassment in some quarters [of the CIA] that people are going to try to shift some of the responsibility to others — that’s what I think,” said Sen. Carl Levin (D-Mich.), who sat on the Senate Intelligence Committee and was briefed on interrogation techniques five times between 2006 and 2007.

“It is ridiculous to argue that the Speaker, who was then the ranking minority member of the Intelligence Committee, could have prevented President Bush from carrying out this policy,” said House Intelligence Panel Chairman Silvestre Reyes (D-TX).

William Amos on May 16, 2009 at 2:28 PM

Damage her, but leave her slowly twisting in the wind.

Let her continue to be the face of the Congressional Democrats…

Realist on May 16, 2009 at 2:30 PM

Greta’s interview was a good example of “In-Depth.” I noticed she wants the notes. Except I also noticed that she, like lib reporters, aren’t disciplined. It reminded me of the demand for Hillary’s daybooks. And then the only real story that emerged was where Hillary was when Bill with Monica.

Nevertheless, I completely agreed with Gingrich. It was a good interview because she let him explain.

Rove is sharp, as always.

AnninCA on May 16, 2009 at 2:31 PM

What’s our next move?

Let her twist slowly in the wind and wait and wait for a Democratic response that’s credible.

bloggless on May 16, 2009 at 2:32 PM

I think Steny Hoyer is using our Republican pundits to attack Pelosi, so that he can blame the Republicans for destroying Nancy instead of blaming the Democrats for empowering her in the first place. I would rather she stick around and remain the face of the Democrat party, but if she’s got to go, let the Democrats force her out.

GarandFan on May 16, 2009 at 2:41 PM

She is branded as a liar now, and even if she survives this Republicans can hammer her as not credible on anything else.

But this is not the only thing we have Pelosi cornered on. In fact, the Murtha scandal may be more important than this one. I would like to see Republicans pivot to Murtha. A serious investigation of Murtha could be the final nail in her coffin.

rockmom on May 16, 2009 at 2:42 PM

Keep Nazi Pelosi around and keep making her the face of the democrapic party.

Meanwhile, a thorny question for Republicans: How hard should the right push for her to go?

Not at all. We should bloody her nose but keep her in the Speakership. She’ll be so sensitive to this issue going forward that she will back off the calls for a Truth Commission to prosecute members of the Bush administration. After all, she knew about and went along with the waterboarding, too.

Pelosi is presumably the one protecting Murtha, as Murtha was/is her henchman, and helped her defeat Hoyer for Minority Leader. With both of them in trouble, Nan can’t help Murtha as much, and Murtha has lost his clout as Dems are less afraid of Nancy.

Wethal on May 16, 2009 at 3:03 PM

I believe the Obama admin set her up to get her out. But without getting their hands dirty. Remember Chicago politics.

It just too much that they release torture memos for some add reason no one can comprehend but refuse to release anything else. Then Nancy’s name suddenly surfaces in the maelstrom, she then implodes and they have been sitting back and watching not coming to her defense once. Obama wants her out of the way.

Its like my suspicions about all his appointees that had ethics problems and had to stepped down. These people got him elected and he paid his dues to them by nominating them to positions when he really didn’t want them, and then sat back as it all unraveled for them. Again his hands clean of the whole thing.

Magnus on May 16, 2009 at 3:03 PM

If the CIA were so into the type of subrefuge Pelosi suggests, there would be NO torture discussion at all.

They would simply kill the prisoners and then produce a memo that confessed, conveniently prior to their untimely death.

Most of them would, naturally, die by underlying conditions.

People would buy that in a heartbeat.

Newt, as usual, is wrong. He is so full of himself. I’m a conservative and I don’t like Newt. Let the democrats self destruct. Nancy Pelosi is who she is – a liar and a bitch. Jane Harmon has to be sitting back and enjoying this. Obama will not touch this issue – it’s toxic, but he’s the one that caused it. In fighting, cat fighting and the queen bee syndrome. Just remember that Hillary is lurking in the background pulling some of these strings too. Let them destroy themselves from within, with a little of innocent help of course.

Laugh at them and make fun of them, that’s what drives them nuts. Put a bag of manure in front of them again and let them step in it – they always do.

Hey Republicans – instead of calling for her to quit – get out there and contrast what you would do….. and not any of this moderate bipartisan BS anymore.

suzyk on May 16, 2009 at 3:17 PM

Pelosi is, as Gingrich says, mortally wounded.

She’ll just continue to bleed.

She doesn’t have a clue about how to be disciplined about her message.

She is a small time Rep from a district.

And that’s all she will ever be.

AnninCA on May 16, 2009 at 3:18 PM

This is just a guess, but I’m thinking that Newt won’t be making any more BS ‘man-made global warming crisis’ commercials with Speaker Botox.

I dunno about you, but that severely damaged his credibility with me, he is slowly building it back up.

As for the speaker, I think it will better poltically if she is forced out. Yes, then she wont be the face of the Democratic party, but no one will remember this if she survives, come election day 2010, or 2012 for that matter. More people(not a lot but still more) will remember her being forced out, rather than a controversy that blew over in May 2009.

And although I detest it, idenity politics can be used to our advantage here. Pelosi was the much-heralded “First Woman Speaker of the House”, wouldn’t be fun to see her disgraced and replaced by the diverse and progressive Democratic with…….another old white male.

Hoyer’s also more on board with the Iraq War and support of Israel than Pelosi has ever been. Makes me more comfortable with him two heartbeats from the presidency and will drive the nutroots bananas!

The worst nightmare for the Dems is the same as their greatest wet dream – power – but only because of their loathing for responsibility. It is their Frankenstein’s monster.

Power, in the hands of a Democrat, is nothing but a self-destruct button they can’t resist playing with.

I say we leave her alone… for now. Let it blow over. The Dems won’t remove her or any other affirmative action hire on their own – unless, of course, the media makes it expidient.

We should wait til next year and hammer her entire party on their judgement, since they chose her to lead the “the most ethical congress ever” and didn’t have the stones to remove her when she failed in that promise.

She has officially become the Joe Biden of the Legislative branch, an embarrassment best kept under wraps or put in conspicuous positions where any missteps only make her look bad.

The reason the Democratic Party stinks is that they don’t throw out the trash. It’s a political compost heap, a hothouse of the outdated.

Pelosi may survive this mostly because the Dems are too dumb to know when they have gone too far.

I believe the reset button that Hillary gave the Russians actually said “Self-Destruct” in Cyrillic.

Most of the careerists over in Langley are quite conservative chaps. They will just as soon burn the entire Congress to the ground as let Pelosi destroy what they’ve built under Bush.

I predict that if she continues to press the issue, the documents coming out of CIA HQ will resemble less of a “leak” than a “cow urinating on a flat rock”.

Loxodonta on May 16, 2009 at 5:20 PM

Newt’s opinion is very important, for he knows history, the law, and the Constitution, as well as House protocol and ethics. He presents his arguments, just as Rove does, on the basis of what is good for the country in the area of national security and the agencies that we trust with it. Neither spokesman has positioned Pelosi’s problem as a partisan issue, nor have they raised questions on the basis of personality.

As long as Gingrich and Rove are explaining the details dispassionately and repeatedly, the American people will be unaware of what Pelosi has done and is continuing to do.

It’s up to the Democrats to address Pelosi’s continued role as Speaker. Daily she is losing her credibility. And it’s up to the Republicans to keep the American people apprised of how Pelosi has politicized national security for her own and her party’s aggrandizement with little to no regard for the nation’s stability. Expose her lies, contradictions, and abuse of power.

Keep an eye on who rallies to her defense and who tries to deflect the seriousness of her malfeasance.

It really doesn’t matter, at this point, what the response is from Republicans. Pelosi has weathered everything to date in her career and really doesn’t believe that anything negative will come, as a result of this latest dustup, from the direction of the right. She fully expects that fellow Dems, the far left and the MSM will give her all the cover she needs, as they have always done in the past.

But I believe that she might be thinking that the above description is not the totality of the problem for her this time. Unless she is even more stupid than it appears she has to realize that her real problem lies with the CIA. Her exposure to retaliation from within the Agency, or even from someone within it’s ranks of retirees or ex-agents, is potentially significant and devastating. Payback could be a real bitch this time.

The only thing to do this time may be to just sit back and watch the show.

The democrats want us to focus on bad things done to the enemy in the WOT. We need to focus on why this is a good fight and the democrats are the ones on the wrong side.

William Amos on May 16, 2009 at 2:20 PM

I like the way you think.

And while Pelosi’s credibility is shrinking, it is time for conservative Republicans to hammer home better solutions to the economy and energy problems facing us than the ones her party is pushing. A convincing argument (”Here is what we propose, and this is why it is better for your pocketbook and your security.”) can be made to the American people, who are beginning to feel the squeeze as this recession is heading toward a depression.

onlineanalyst on May 16, 2009 at 5:30 PM

Correction:

As long as Gingrich and Rove are explaining the details dispassionately and repeatedly, the American people will become aware of what Pelosi has done and is continuing to do.

onlineanalyst on May 16, 2009 at 5:46 PM

If she is a clear and present threat to national security and the safety of our troops she should go. If not, let her twist in the wind and use her during the 2010 campaign as a prime example of Democrat politics. Just don’t expect the Obamedia to aid our cause in any way.

SKYFOX on May 16, 2009 at 6:28 PM

What’s our next move?

Call for the FBI to give Nan a lie detector test, since she doesn’t trust the CIA.

(The graph paper would look like the recording of a seismic 8.2 earthquake after every pertinent question.)

Pelosi: gone by Labor Day The Fourth of July.

profitsbeard on May 16, 2009 at 6:37 PM

Pelosi is not going any where.

This is a given. She could say she had not any surgery and then blame bush for causing her to get it. This MSM is not going to do anything to get her out or even try. She will not be leaving after they just won. “I won”

This would be like… right after the win of one of many battle then quiting when the whole reason for the battle was power not even just to win. Now that they got the power they will never let it go without a fight.

To take a modified quote “I’ll give you my gavel when you take it from my cold, dead hands!” “

tjexcite on May 16, 2009 at 6:52 PM

This whole issue aside (sort of)Greta states @ 6:59-ish that “If you talk to Senator McCain, it doesn`t work” (regarding EIT). Now IMO, NOT to show ANY disrespect for Senator McCain but…is that not Mr. McCain`s point of view from HIS direct experience, or is that a proven fact?

NY Conservative on May 16, 2009 at 7:51 PM

If there’s one thing Pelosi can do, it’s play the victim. GOP probably need to be very deft with their attacks.

eforhan on May 16, 2009 at 8:56 PM

What’s our next move?

Keep pounding on her & make the left defend her. The more we do this the better it is for Republican candidates in 2010. They can attack the Dem incumbents as Pelosi’s puppets & make their elections about her and Reid. It’s the same way the Dem’s ran against Bush. Make her the Dem Mascot, as Treacher has advocated, & then pound on all those who voted to make her Speaker. Making Democrats attack their own in order to win re-election, is an effective way to divide their party.

Stickeehands on May 16, 2009 at 9:07 PM

As for the speaker, I think it will better poltically if she is forced out. Yes, then she wont be the face of the Democratic party, but no one will remember this if she survives, come election day 2010, or 2012 for that matter. More people(not a lot but still more) will remember her being forced out, rather than a controversy that blew over in May 2009.

I think this is true. You have to strike while the iron is hot in politics, because what doesn’t kill you is soon forgotten by the electorate. If there is anything the Republicans can do to hasten Pelosi’s demise, they should carry it out with gusto.

holygoat on May 16, 2009 at 9:40 PM

It’s politically fun to have someone this stupid and destructive as the Dem Speaker and to smear the President and their douchebag party with her greasy butt.

But the better thing for the country would be for Obama to quietly tell the House Dems to unseat her and put Hoyer in charge. He is apparently well respected by the House GOP and they are willing to work with him in good faith. Bad for the GOP but good for the country.

Jaibones on May 16, 2009 at 9:57 PM

How hard should the right push for her to go? Steve King’s already called on her to step down, but the more we beat up on her, the more the left will feel obliged to circle the wagons instead of hanging her out to dry.

The left will circle the wagons but Democrats wont. She could be a political anchor. Imagine if every news station in Boston started running John Kerry’s winter soldier testimony every night for a year prior to his next senate race. Would Rahm Emmanuel circle the wagons or would he look for a new candidate?

What’s our next move?

Damage her as much as possible yet leave her as speaker of the house. She is more useful to the right as a smeared and fully discredited current speaker than as a former speaker. She would be a lame duck and she would be far less useful to Obama. We need to make the stain stick.

Every time foreign time torture is mentioned alluding to Pelosi is required. “Well we know who plays politics with torture and foreign policy.”

Theworldisnotenough on May 16, 2009 at 11:56 PM

Say “Good night, Nancy.”

Gracie Allen was only acting like a dingbat.

Nancy Pelosi plays one in real life.

Really weird.

He’s got that right. Can someone wake me when this episode of the Twighlight Zone is over.

Republicans have an oppotrunity here and must avoid The Palestinian Option- of never miss an oppotunity to miss an opportunity. Republicans must not allow this to degenerate into a partisan issue, the CIA has ample defense mechanisms of it’s own and will apply them generously as needed.

The “power play” here is to drag this out as long as possible, hopefully until the the mid-term 2010 elections when you bring this to a crescendo. Having Pelosi as the “face” of the democratic party is an asset that cannot be wasted, keeping the Dems and Obama off balance and in reaction mode is the only defense available given their majority status at this time.

The incalcuable damage that is being wrought on our nation might start to become readily apparent by 2010. Our focus should be attuned towards illuminating this in a timely fashion and to the greatest electoral effect. If there be no credible alternate to Obama’s policies come 2010 we are screwed, if the Obama doctrines are allowed 4yrs of unfetterrred leeway we are doomed and rejection of it by the body politic is absolutely crucial.

If we allow the de-construction of contract law that is the heart of the constitution to be become intstitutionalized by 2012 the battle is lost. Team Obama is moving with such haste that after 4yrs the damage may be too great to reverse. His political capital must be knee-capped by 2010 or I fear it will be too late.

Archimedes on May 17, 2009 at 3:37 AM

Republicans must now attach the word “liar” to her name at every opportunity. Then let the Democrats keep on attempting to defend their “ethical” Speaker.

I think if the Republicans play it right, this “liar” meme can go on and on and on and score big points heading into 2010.

Edouard on May 17, 2009 at 4:10 AM

hit play, give it a few seconds to buffer all the way up, then skip to 2:55

I would but every time I try to hit ‘play’ nothing happens (except for the fingerprint that gets left on my screen).

Gosh Allah – I need help! I’m waaaaayyyyyy to stoopit to figure out how to start a f@#$ing online video all by my lonesome!

You got some pictures or diagrams for me to follow instead? Reading instructions and following them is SOOOO hard!

Mr Purple on May 17, 2009 at 5:04 AM

The more that Pelosi is the face of the Democrat Party, the better.

The more that intollerant, hateful, bigoted jerk is the one running the Democrats in the house, the better. She pretty much single-handedly made it so that not one single House Republican voted for the Porkulus. That’s the kind of leadership we want the Democrats to have.

Greg Q on May 17, 2009 at 5:06 AM

I think watching fox news causes brain damage! Does anyone seriously think Pelosi will lose her Speakership over this? In one month this will be old news! Hey… We elected these guys!

sabbott on May 17, 2009 at 8:38 AM

Do not be suckered into going into attach mode. Just let the facts bury her. The truth shall set us free.

Does it frighten anyone else that this moron is third in line for the presidency??

Sam Adams on May 17, 2009 at 11:49 AM

Make her the face of the Democrat congress.

Don’t call for her to resign but maximize her as a liability.
