WaPo: You know, Pelosi may have a credibility problem

I don’t want to pick on Dan Balz for this report on the Nancy Pelosi-CIA follies, because in this case, he does his best to stay objective on a story where the obvious exceeds the limits of journalism.  Balz does his best to stay within the non-judgmental vocabulary to describe Pelosi’s latest story on her complicity in the enhanced interrogation techniques used by the CIA, but how does one objectively describe how someone has taken their credibility onto a dais and beaten it to death with a microphone?  Balz gives it the old college try:

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s extraordinary accusation that the Bush administration lied to Congress about the use of harsh interrogation techniques dramatically raised the stakes in the growing debate over the Bush administration’s anti-terrorism policies even as it raised some questions about the speaker’s credibility.

Pelosi’s performance in the Capitol was either a calculated escalation of a long-running feud with the Bush administration or a reckless act by a politician whose word had been called into question. Perhaps it was both.

For the first time, Pelosi (D-Calif.) acknowledged that in 2003 she was informed by an aide that the CIA had told others in Congress that officials had used waterboarding during interrogations. But she insisted, contrary to CIA accounts, that she was not told about waterboarding during a September 2002 briefing by agency officials. Asked whether she was accusing the CIA of lying, she replied, “Yes, misleading the Congress of the United States.”

Balz waits until the end of the article to write what everyone already knows:

Pelosi is not out of the woods. She could have saved herself some trouble by admitting earlier that she had been informed that the CIA was using waterboarding. By doing what she did yesterday, she has assured that she will remain a central character in the political fight that is raging. But whether by design or accident, she also succeeded in enlarging a controversy that is no longer a sideshow.

In other words, Balz could easily have led with this: “House Speaker Nancy Pelosi threw gasoline on a fire yesterday and blamed George Bush for the fire damage.”

Dana Milbank has more fun with the story:

Nancy Pelosi is a woman of many talents. Yesterday, she performed the delicate art of backtracking while walking sideways.

The speaker of the House had just read a statement accusing the CIA of lying and was trying to beat a hasty retreat from her news conference before reporters could point out contradictions between her current position and her previous statements.

“Thank you!” an aide called out to signal an end to the session. Pelosi walked, sideways, away from the lectern and, still sidling in a sort of crab walk, was halfway to the door when a yell from CNN’s Dana Bash, rising above the rest of the shouting, froze her in the aisle. …

Over the next few minutes of shouted questions — “They lied to you? Were you justified? When were you first told? Did you protest? Why didn’t you tell us?” — the speaker attempted the crab-walk retreat again, returned to the lectern again and then finally skittered out of the room.

Milbank actually gets to the heart of Pelosi’s performance yesterday.  She has created so many self-serving narratives on this topic that crab-walking is all she has left.  Even Balz can’t help from pointing that out in the news report, and Milbank has a field day with it.

Will Democrats insist that she step down from the Speaker’s seat?  Like Allahpundit, I’m not sure what Pelosi gets them in a Democratic administration, especially one that wants to pose as a post-partisan White House.  Pelosi may be an attack dog, but they don’t need one any more, not with a 78-vote margin.  Steny Hoyer would make a better Speaker for this period, one that has a track record of bipartisan engagement — and one that has his credibility intact.  Had this never come up, no one would have thought replacing Pelosi worth the trouble, but she’s kneecapped herself and made it extraordinarily difficult for her party to press forward with a review of interrogations on their own terms.

I wouldn’t predict her ouster, but it wouldn’t surprise me, either.

I suspect this issue will be dead by this weekend, depending on what the CIA decides to leak or not leak. If they are tired of playing, it’s a non-issue.

But I don’t think she’s going anywhere.

I think she just has a mental problem; the press conference yesterday seemed to indicate that, to her, truth was an abstract item not worthy of too much attention. Political advantage was instead the focus. Sadly, she is playing politics with people’s lives. I think she should focus on a retirement home that lacks CIA retirees of course…

If I was a Dem, I’d vote for Jane Harman as House leader. She DID raise questions about EIT, and was shushed up by Pelosi. At least that would show consistency.

Of course, I’m not a Dem, and I think Jane Harman was only doing a better job of covering her arse than Pelosi did.

Precisely why I don’t want her to fall. Bipartisanship, or rather the appearence of it, will just give the donks cover. Most of the GOP will be happy to help.

This wasn’t even the lead story on the “Big 3″ yesterday. NBC and ABC led off with the Chrysler dealership shut downs and CBS led off with the space shuttle. (I was flipping channels while at the gym yesterday). ABC had it as it’s 2nd story, NBC and CBS had it third.

Read the NYT editorial page today. Scathing editorial on the Murtha coverup. Looks to me like the Post and the Times are abandoning ship. If the Murtha can of worms gets opened, Pelosi is toast.

These things can move surprisingly quickly. Rahm wants no sideshows or speed bumps in front of the “change” steamroller, and all Pelosi has done is give Republicans three gigantic issues to reorganize themselves around and make those speed bumps bigger (the Porkulus, waterboarding, and the Murtha coverup.) I think he will decide soon that Nancy has passed her sell-by date.

No. We all are. It has been a great few days. Hopefully Nancy will keep dragging this story out for another week.

The Sunday Shows are going to be a Pas de Deux of Pelosi and Cheney, for another week. This will guarantee that the Speaker will come out with both barrels blazing on Monday, to correct all of the errors from Sunday. Then all the ‘Pubbies have to do is keep the pot boiling for four days, and Pelosi will blow up again on Friday, and guarantee another round of Sunday Shows.

because this WaPo article comes across to me as an activists journalist being drug by his ears to have to address the obvious lies by the democratic speaker of the House with “comments raise detainee debate to new level”(according to Instapundit,they changed the headline,taking out the word “troubled” I believe).

The Speaker has been caught lying about her knowledge of EIT’s and now also specifically waterboarding.

That’s not “raising the debate”,it’s outright lying by a Congressional leader who prances around talking about “cleaning up the swamp”.

She is so desperate that she has called out the CIA as “liars”(a suicidal move) on a national platform and her only defense is trying to ride Jane Harmon’s coattails with “yeh,what she said…you go girl”.

There is more than enough facts here to slam the speaker headline to headline,newscast to newscast.
The WaPo comes across like a beat down dog ashamed to look America in the eye for the idiots they support with their activist journalism.

This is the same MO the liberals used in trying to rewrite history concerning there years of saying Saddam was a threat,possessed WMD’s/ties to al-qaeda and voting for the Iraq war.

I hope the Republicans can muster up some Cheney balls strength and slam this witch for lying and politicizing National Security issues for her own political gain.

her story is completely implausible. the CIA lies to members of Congress while she was in attendance, but then five months later come clean about the use of waterboarding with the same members of Congress in attendance except her. c’mon Nancy, you expect us to believe that one. the fact that the other dems that were in the same meeting that you attended aren’t coming forward with the same version of events that your putting out is damning evidence against you. i dare you Nancy to trot your fellow dems who sat beside you during your briefing and demand that they back you up!

Seriously, this is all out of the Saul Alinsky playbook. He says whatever he wants, and contradicts himself continually on purpose. Each comment makes some of his fans happy. He overloads the media with new outrageous statements every day so that people quickly forget “yesterday’s” outrageous comment — and he never has to back it up.

The XX zygote factor is probably why the Democrats are so reluctant to dump Nancy. Major high-profile Democratic Party fundraisers like the ladies of Emily’s List put such a premium on gender politics, that the people on the Hill who see Hoyer as a much better (and effective) choice as speaker have to worry about the identity politics backlash it would cause if Pelosi departed in the same sort of ignominy as Jim Wright, when he was forced out over his fraudulent book royalty deal.

Even die-hard Democrats are doing their own crab walk away from the House Madam. Her last salvo has locked the door on any honorable withdrawal (not that Madam or her Congresstitutes have any honor in the first place). She can’t won’t step down willingly in favor of the despised Steny Hoyer. So it’s gonna be either a mutiny or a coup to bring her down.

This will make the Jim Wright imbroglio look like a square dance.

Holywood can’t make a spectacle this good.

Rule 1: Power is not only what you have, but what an opponent thinks you have. If your organization is small, hide your numbers in the dark and raise a din that will make everyone think you have many more people than you do.
