Video: Kit Bond says CIA doesn’t brief on rejected techniques

posted at 11:36 am on May 15, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
Share on Facebook | printer-friendly

Time has this moment of clarity from Senator Kit Bond, who must wonder where the media’s common sense went yesterday. Why would the CIA call a briefing to discuss waterboarding to say they weren’t going to use it? Since Time blocks embedding, I’ll use MS-NBC’s embed of the entire video, but the money quote comes at the 6:45 mark, but you’ll be plenty entertained by then.

Visit msnbc.com for Breaking News, World News, and News about the Economy

BOND: I’ve been in briefings, and they don’t have briefings to tell you the techniques they’re not going to use. [Laughter]

Q: That’s a really good way of putting it.

BOND: That dog doesn’t hunt. [Laughter]

Watch the whole clip. Bond explains clearly why the CIA would never flat-out lie to the people who control their pursestrings, which Joe Scarborough knows from his time on the Hill. Not only does Bond rip Pelosi, so does the entire MS-NBC panel. By the time this ends, they’re all laughing at Pelosi’s latest story.

I have to say, even Norah O’Donnel was pretty hard hitting yesterday, as the story was breaking.

I guess that shareholders meeting last month hit a “reality nerve” for GE/MSNBC.

Or they just said “numbers must go up by 25% or everyone gets a pink slip or 50% reduction in salary.”

Odie1941 on May 15, 2009 at 11:46 AM

See, they’ve been lying with such impunity that they got cocky and thought they could get away with ANYTHING they said. Well, Obama still can, but it’s only a matter of time for that freak to be exposed too.

marklmail on May 15, 2009 at 11:47 AM

Nancy Pelosi is her own tragedy, but SHE is not the center of the American heart. Her prominent powerful position to hurt America and damage America is the worst thing to come of this.

That she is permitted to persist in office is awful.

Hurt the morale at the CIA and the entire community.
A lack of integrity and intelligence in her convictions
And isn’t that the ultimate loss here in the conversation…

maverick muse on May 15, 2009 at 11:48 AM

There’s nothing like the feeding frenzy that occurs when the MSM turns on one of their own.

afotia on May 15, 2009 at 11:50 AM

There is an actual problem here; but continue with the Pelosi bashing and ignore what’s wrong with everything that is going on.

The CIA and “leaks” hurt the Bush administration. The CIA and “leaks” are seeking to do the same to Pelosi.

When you have unelected people – whom you don’t even know what their goal is – taking out elected officials; it’s a cause of concern. Not something to be cheered on from the sidelines. No matter who the victim is.

That, and, it seems we’ve pretty much conceded that waterboarding is torture.

So, on both counts, please continue. It’s stupid. There are more important things to discuss.

What is being missed is the fact that lying to congress can be a criminal offense. Fine depose her and then from her sworn statements we can get to the bottom of things. After all, if the CIA has committed a crime, we need to have oversight hearings and find out who is at fault and hold people responsible.

I suspect Pelosi is feverishly attempting to dismantle her petard as we speak.

moxie_neanderthal on May 15, 2009 at 11:56 AM

Jim Treacher on May 15, 2009 at 11:56 AM

In looking at Nancy Peelousy it’s the public who require a blindfold. Hellzapoppin there. This is youtube gold. Though I doubt it will make the late night circuit. Have the majors started using the word ‘embattled’ to describe Ms. Peelousy? That would up the ante. Steny Hoyer must be carrying around a spitoon because of his salivating that the Speakership is within striking distance now.

Kick her ass out. Maybe we should just wait until 2010 and let the chips fall where they may. If anything, the Dems will take a trouncing in 2010 and the “leadership” of Pelosi will be frowned upon after the election. Then, she’ll just “leave” the position “on her own accord” and we won’t have to listen to her sh** anymore. Even if the Dems have a large majority in the House in 2011, I can still see a large turnout of conservatives/right of center voters if this b.s. continues.

Yes there are a multitude of important things to be discussed. I would think that one of those items that should be on the front burner, in this still dangerous world, is whether we can trust our intelligence agencies to tell us the truth.

You mean like we have pretty much conceded that global warming is caused by man.
You have conceded it is torture…it is enhanced interrogation techniques.
Torture, and you may have a different opinion, is not allowing the prisoner to have a latte after the “torture”.
Our service men are not “tortured”, but they receive the same “torture”.
How many of our “tortured” souls have been killed? Lost limbs? Broken bones?…what you mean they were sleep deprived? How many drowned? Dislocated joint? Lost teeth? Buried alive?…sheeesh….
Yesterday it rained here, do you think it was also a hurricane? They both have rain….
You think the word “torture” means the same for all of the techniques, because you don’t have another word to use.

I see lots of people saying “yes lets have hearings” on this or that. As if water boarding is torture.

Pelosi’s two faced lies are apparent and that’s wonderful. She’s caught up in this because of her stances and that’s wonderful as well. But here we have a bunch of people saying – yeah, let’s having hearings! – over something just a few weeks ago wasn’t worth the trouble. It’s disturbing.

So, its your position that when an elected Official LIES about a Governmental Agency, that is is not right for that Agency to fight back?

Romeo13 on May 15, 2009 at 12:00 PM

Did I say any of this? I said that anonymous leaks, which may or may not be complete (much like what happened to Bush – things were leaked to complete an agenda behind the scenes) are a huge problem. The CIA has a mind of its own, it seems to operate outside the boundaries of everyone and given it’s track record in recent years, I’m not sure that it’s a great idea to have it totally out of control.

CIA’s random and incomplete leaks were bad under Bush and they are bad now. What amazes me is that people can’t see the problem with secret matters being kept secret.

Pelosi’s lies are apparent without any help from the CIA or leaks.

Pelosi has suggested that she was the victim of potentially criminal misconduct by the CIA. As the Speaker of the House and 2nd in line for the Presidency (guardianship of Slow-Joe Biden) she should be demanding an investigation.

To clear her good name Pelosi should be demanding to be deposed and an investigation as to who, what, when where and why. It is much to serious a charge to be swept under the rug. But we won’t hear that from Pelosi or her surrogates because it is not true.

Pelosi has repeatedly lied about her role with regard to enhanced interrogation and her implicit role in the program, lied about the conduct of others and now suggested potentially criminal misconduct by the CIA.

All the while she has vigorously used her office and position to destroy the people that helped construct the program for which she provided tacit approval. Absolutely detestable behavior and disqualifying as a leader. Very much on point lorien.

She deserves to be pilloried at the very least and probably removed. I think we’ve “pretty much conceded” that point.

What should Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi pick as her swan song?

Send in the clowns.

Stick in their Nancy… Someone has got to really believe you…

Pelosi’s lies are apparent without any help from the CIA or leaks.

Ah, but therein lies the problem. Pelosi’s lies may be apparent to you, and to me, and to the thinking or observant person, but possibly not to enough people.

This needs to be done in a very public manner. The sharks will not do their job, until there is blood-in-the-water.

Yes… keep the light on her – for eight years if needed. Even when we get back power, we should have some loony RINO keep the attack on Pelosi and Co – It’s all her fault.
