Poll of GOP “insiders”: Palin ties for seventh as pol with brightest future

posted at 7:50 pm on May 15, 2009 by Allahpundit

She’s lost the elites, although of course her fans would say she never had them. Bear in mind these “insiders” also say, by an overwhelming majority, that Dick Cheney’s media campaign has done more to hurt the party than help it notwithstanding Obama’s climbdown on the detainee photos and the ongoing circus surrounding Madam Speaker. Caveat emptor:

She finished three votes ahead of … “no one”? Surely these people know how much the base adores her and how much money she’s capable of raising; to put her on an equal footing with Mitch Daniels under those circumstances means they think she’s either already destroyed her credibility or that she’ll inevitably destroy it once she’s back in the glare of a campaign. I’d like to believe that’s not true, but with the media poised to seize every mistake to push its narrative that she’s the second coming of Dan Quayle, she’d have to play error-free ball to prevent it — and how likely is that?

If this poll means anything, it means she’ll have to work twice as hard now to convince skeptical fundraisers and organizers that they’re better off joining her campaign before the 2011 primaries than that of a more polished candidate. How she’d go about doing that at this point, I just don’t know. Raise money money money, I guess, and the talent will follow.

STARVE THE BEAST!
Don’t contribute any money to the state or national Republican Party. Give your money directly to the candidate that you like and then tell the Republican “leadership?” why they aren’t getting any of your money. If no one sends them any money, they can’t keep helping RINO’s by funding them. STARVE THE BEAST! The Republican “insiders” say that Cheney is not helping the party. I say he is the only one who is helping the Republican party and that the “insiders” are the problem, not the solution. They don’t have a clue about what the average conservative is thinking and what they would like to see. Mario Rubio is a minority candidate, who is conservative, while Crist is in favor of Nobama’s porkulus program. If you lie with dogs, you get up with fleas.

Are we gonna have to regime-change these people? What, do they all report to David Frum each morning for their “Vitamin” pill?

Seriously. They don’t think Sarah Palin’s future is as bright as Haley Barbour’s, PLUS they want to vote that the Democrats’ socialist agenda makes them look SOO-OOO FAT, and add a killer rider that the Democrats have donkey ears!!! Ha! Take that, Democrats! We’re not afraid to look like hyenas in public, AND we’ll do whatever it takes to shut down our biggest cash cow and most popular national figure! We’re SO much more virtuous than those Democratic Socialists with their bad hair and their botox and their eyebrows halfway up their foreheads…

… and they’re coming to take the GOP Insiders away… ha-ha… ho-ho… hee-HEEEEEE!!!!!!!

J.E. Dyer on May 15, 2009 at 8:48 PM

And they are really really naive if they think that the media won’t savage Jindal. It’s just that they are more willing to defend him.

How can Crist, Barbour??? ZZZZZZZZZZ

jencab on May 15, 2009 at 8:48 PM

Wonder what the poll would say if they asked the same question of normal Republican folks?

DL13 on May 15, 2009 at 8:48 PM

So, the pros at campaign fund raising and management for Republicans don’t have a clear favorite for the next presidential race. So? Why should they? It’s still quite early. Also, it might not be a sitting or even former governor who leads the Party next.

Also, when thinking of a bright future, only 5 of these elites first thought of Governor Palin. So? She did get and continues to get battered by the news and entertainment media. If she can hold her own in some elite settings in the future, perceptions will change. It’s not as if she’s off their radar. To me, the field is still wide open.

Loxodonta on May 15, 2009 at 8:51 PM

Come on. This poll is a shame. Probably consisted of nerdy, jealous beltway types.

Barbour? Pawlenty? They’re both lightweights….

We already knew the GOP establishment doesn’t like Palin. They probably didn’t like Reagan either..

therightwinger on May 15, 2009 at 8:52 PM

The fact that the media still savage Palin tells me they really fear her. That says something right there!

I’ll never understand why the beltway types think Pawlenty’s some great major player. I’m sure he’s nice and all, but he’s about as exciting as a George Will/David Frum dance-off.

Pasalubong on May 15, 2009 at 8:54 PM

I think the “insiders” of the GOP’s future is more dim than Palin’s. Nobody really gives a shit what they think, Palin draws huge crowds wherever she goes. Personally if the “insiders” don’t like her that is a plus.

I don’t know if a poll like this was done in 1977; but I’d guess Ronald Reagan would have ranked almost exactly the same.

jerrytbg on May 15, 2009 at 8:58 PM

Gov. Palin is getting extreme bad advice or it could be that she’s simply not interested in the POTUS 2012 position.

You “can’t” stay silent on certain major issues (such as immigration) and gain the respect of the Base. The Base can only assume, at this point, that she’s no different than McCain on these major issues. We have nothing from her to tell us otherwise. DD

Darvin Dowdy on May 15, 2009 at 8:59 PM

Exactly. He’s not a national politician, IMO..Not big league caliber.

Can anyone imagine Barbour and that southern drawl trying to articulate conservative ideas? Nightmare.

therightwinger on May 15, 2009 at 9:02 PM

You “can’t” stay silent on certain major issues (such as immigration) and gain the respect of the Base.

I don’t think it’s necessary for her to have a fully developed campaign platform at this stage of the game. It’s more important that she rolls up her sleeves and gets things done in Alaska, frankly, to regain the ground she lost during the campaign season.

Illegal immigration is not a big issue for her in role as governor of Alaska. I doubt she has a well-thought out policy on that issue yet. That doesn’t worry me.

Now, it would be nice if the friggin’ “party leaders” would tap her, as they tapped Jindal, to do some high-profile things in which she is able to showcase her expertise. But I guess they don’t think that government reform or energy are big issues right now, huh?

Y-not on May 15, 2009 at 9:03 PM

Bobby Jindal??? Seriously? The movement can’t defeat Obama unless they finally get behind Dr. Paul. None of these names will do it. The stale policies won’t do it. All the rah-rah for torture, war and brutality in the world won’t do it for the GOP.

The Dean on May 15, 2009 at 9:07 PM

Wow. The GOP is headed for a huge brawl. I for one can’t wait. This will either cause a much needed compromise between members of our party, or end in broken and useless GOP. Sad thing is that both sides are right, each are needed to win. The way we are headed we are never going to come together to defeat the democrats. I would still think that is our goal, as it would seem that if you are not a member of the democrat party, there must be a reason. Mine is to fight the liberal agenda with everything I have. I hate that it bothers the moderates that I am pro-life, peace through strength, and a fiscal conservative. It is just who I am, and I will not let go of these beliefs to make some moderates more comfortable. Get over it. You believe what you want, I could care less. I am worried by 2012 I am going to want to shove Sarah Palin down the throats of moderates as much as the liberals. We get it, you don’t like her. If she runs, beat her fair and square and I will support the survivor. Hell I voted for McCain.

If H Ross Perot had come across as a little saner, he could have won the 1992 three-way. So, no, you don’t really NEED these guys. You need these guys to get out of the effin way.

Either 2012 is going to be a massive anti-establishment reaction – including Republican Insiders – or we might as well run one of the guys on the top of this list and feel lucky if he wins his home state. In fact, if the GOP puts up a Crist or a Huntsman, he’ll be lucky to come in third.

Jaibones on May 15, 2009 at 9:23 PM

I’d like to believe that’s not true, but with the media poised to seize every mistake to push its narrative that she’s the second coming of Dan Quayle,

Only if the media is a) still around and b) still respectable after the next few years. Most of the major outlets are nearing bankruptcy; Fox’s ratings do nothing but go up; and, as we’re starting to see, not even the media believes the media anymore.

Give it a few years. As Obama breaks his campaign promises, plays dirty, spends more money in two years than Bush did in all eight, and disappoints most of the people who voted for him, the media will be discredited. That they attacked Gov. Palin so viciously back in 2008 could be her biggest asset, if she plays it right.

As Lincoln said before his nomination on the 1860 Republican ticket: “Only events can make a President”. If the economy is tanking and all those brilliant Harvard minds in the Obama administration have screwed things up, then the way will be clear for a candidate with basic common sense and values — and that candidate will be Sarah Palin.

Jindal doesn’t have a snowball’s chance in Gerlach.

And Huntsman dead last? This sounds to me like someone was polling the 700 Club or something. Insiders my rear end.

JINDAL??? There is just no possible way a creationist who uses political office to shove Christianity into science class is ever going to get elected in this country. At least I hope to heck that never happens.

And Huntsman is one of the most level-headed Republicans out there. But he smokes the wrong brand of Christianity for the party dregs, I mean base.

These people are putting cultural agenda ahead of government. Which is the one thing that sucks with both Republicans and Democrats. It doesn’t matter if you are competent or have good ideas about how to move the country forward, the important thing is you have the “correct” cultural values to suit that party. Sickening.

crosspatch on May 15, 2009 at 9:44 PM

Haley is our governor and he was also in charge of things in the GOP when more were involved and gave more money than currently. He helped win a large number of seats and the Base was not quite as far under the bus.

However, he is tied lock stock and barrel to lobbyists. I would be shocked beyond shocked to see him run for POTUS. He did endorse McCain and has not been as Conservative in our state as we know he could be. He did however, do a fabulous job when Katrina hit. He gave all those down on the coast permission to shoot anything that threatened them. He has kept a lot of what went down in LA from happening here. To me, he would be good to help in fund raising, reigning in the RINOS and helping us reach some sort of balance in the GOP.

The guy you all might want to watch in our state is Greg Harper. THE DUDE ROCKS! And I mean rocks! He is in the House. He is calling a spade a spade and was beyond supportive of the tea parties. He is young and is extremely refreshing; especially on the honesty front. He does not smell like a politician.

I am also for starving the RNC until they get the message. Give to individual candidates is the way to go. We have sent money to Russell, Bachmann, Conway and a few others outside of our state. I would love to see a group unite called “red-staters for blue-staters” where red states could aid blue state candidates both in money and in any other ways needed. Many red states who have some safe areas need to save our fellow Americans ASAP!

I have my reservations as to whether anyone on their preferred list could have gone through the abuse and invasion of privacy that Palin did and take it as well and as graciously as she did.

I’m sorry, the more I hear from the GOP the less I like it. McCain was a total disaster, and the last thing we need is these out of touch pompous asses picking another candidate.

In either case, it shows their lack of understanding that we are fighting a war with the Left, not a friendly game of croquet.

Palin has more balls than the entire lot of these lying “insiders”. She’s the toughest, by far, of anyone on that list. She’s not afraid to fight, and she has proven…time and time again…that she can take a series of punches, and come up swinging.

The GOP party ‘elites’ are alreadly busy trying to figure out how they are going to ensure Palin is completely frozen out so they can launch the good ship DEMOCRAT-LITE II with some moderate at the helm.

What’s that hand I see there?

You’re asking me about the DEMOCRAT-LITE I?

That crashed last year with John McCain at the helm. Noonan, Brooks, Parker, Frum, Buckley….they all helped launch that ship then didn’t even wait until it crashed into the rocks to abandon it and go running to Obama.

But hey, not to worry. There’ no reason they can’t try the same strategy again. They’ll find some moderate middle of the road guy, maybe tack on a token conservative to try to whip up the base, then launch the ship again.

DEMOCRATE-LITE II.

Remember that name. It’s under construction now.

Aside from the fact that alleged DC “insiders” don’t know their a** from a hole in the ground, I doubt this poll means anything for Gov. Palin. I don’t believe she’s even thinking about ’12 but rather positioning herself for ’16. She’ll do the book, a tour, run for re-election, maybe do another book, and spend 2 years campaigning for ’16 after her 2nd term is over. She’s the youngest person on the list other than Jindal, and will still be considered fairly young, although much more experienced, come ’16. Her children will be much older, and she’ll have so much more time to completely re-invent herself.

She’s the youngest person on the list other than Jindal, and will still be considered fairly young, although much more experienced, come ‘16. Her children will be much older, and she’ll have so much more time to completely re-invent herself.

howIroll on May 15, 2009 at 10:10 PM

The only thing I would disagree with you on is Gov. Palin running for re-election and waiting for 2016.
The book tour next year will be the first time the national public will get to hear and see the REALSarah Palin. What we saw last fall was McCain induced Sarah who had to mimic his views. The book tour will give Gov. Palin a vehicle to tell her story, how her political philosophy shaped her views etc. She can also use the tour to build her network and gauge her support. I have a feeling it is going to overwhelm all her opponents and make them cry.

She’s lost the elites, although of course her fans would say she never had them.

Who would say she ever had them?

Allah thinks this poll means something. He is so clueless. why doesn’t allah just come out and say he is a Mitt guy. allah is the biggest RINO of the conservative webshere with ACe a close second. Allah get out from NYC or whatever liberal city you live in and understand what the MAJORITY of reps want. Hint: it is not Mitt

The interesting thing is watching Democratic strategists versus Republican startegists on cable talk shows.

Democratic strategistists appear dedicated to their cause, no matter how looney it is.

When you see a Republican strategist, like Kevin Madden for example, you sense that he has no mission, no philosophy, no fire. Kevin is real pretty, but you get the impression that to him it’s no more than a job and he’d be just as happy working for the Dims as long as he could make good money and buy nice threads (so he can continue to look pretty).

Dick Cheney’s media campaign has done more to hurt the party

And once again, shouldn’t America be placed ahead of any party? That’s what Dick Cheney is concerned about.

Atheism in one thread and Palin in the other

kangjie on May 15, 2009 at 11:17 PM

Exactly who are these insiders?

I don’t know if Palin can make it on a national stage or not, or what her future holds. But I can remember when people laughed at Reagan too.

I suppose time will tell.

Terrye on May 15, 2009 at 11:20 PM

I still believe that the people who mock Sarah the most are the ones who are terrified of the way she resonates with people. She speaks plainly about what she believes. Oh yeah, it’s just soooo disgustingly populist (yep, I’m being sarcastic).

Now, Mr. Obama is a real speechifier, but he doesn’t believe most of what he says; he says it because it polls well. And both the RINOs and selected interest groups of the left understand that now.

This is why I am certain that there will not be a second term for Barry, and Michelle will once again lament about what a mean country this is.

I found that Rasmussen poll about pro-lifers now being in the majority most heartening. Once again the left and the RINOs got it wrong.

The fact that Arnold made the list pretty much tells you all you need to know.

I can’t say I’m disappointed. Because I’m not.

I live in California. I can see Mexico from my house!

So now that that’s all cleared up, let’s get that all too valuable spotlight off her and get someone with viability on point and in the spotlight who could actually reap some benefit from it. He/She will either sink or swim in the glare, and time’s short, so the GOP needs to get on it now.

Mitt doesn’t have “it.” I wish he did, because I like him on many levels, but he’s semi-phony, and that’s deadly.

disa on May 15, 2009 at 11:28 PM

These are the same insiders who said “John McCain was the Democrats’ worst nightmare.”

The same insiders who got crushed the last two election cycles.

The same insiders whose advice has resulted in the GOP having the lowest voter party identification numbers in years.

Yeah, let’s take their advice once again….that’s the ticket! /sarc

Oh, you mean someone like Jindal, Barbour, Crist or Pawlenty? ROFL…puhleeez…

Then when the MSM lays into them you’ll tuck your tail between your legs and off you go to snark about it all.

ddrintn on May 15, 2009 at 11:30 PM

I’m guessing they got three of the McCains with their solid “GOP” ideals to vote. Powell might have got a vote too.

Rbastid on May 15, 2009 at 11:36 PM

Look, the problem is that Republicans have completely forgotten who they’re supposed to be. They’ve drifted so far from preserving individual liberty and what made this country great, that they’ve become a lower gear of the Democrats, when it comes to statism.

Like Jeff Flake and Bob Inglis proposing an alternative carbon tax. Hello, global warming is a sham, and carbon is NOT a pollutant. Jeez, what does it takes to get through some of these thick noggins!!!

Just curious.

“Just as the conservative intellectuals once projected their hopes onto Dubya, now they project their disappointments onto Sarah. But the fault is theirs, not hers. And Sarah has something the intellectuals don’t have — an army. Brother, I’ve seen that army.

So you can take your David Frums and your David Brookses, and let Sarah take that army and, by God, we’ll see whose Republican Party this is.”

-Robert Stacy McCain

doug1981 on May 15, 2009 at 11:49 PM

Give the good Governor a break.

Since January 2009, Sarah has formed SarahPac, a Legal Defense Fund, negotiated a multi-million dollar book deal which will lead to a big book tour next year and was the only Republican politician to be included on Time’s 100 Most Influential Persons in the World. On top of all that, she is still racking up accomplishments up in Alaska as Governor. If that doesn’t merit the respect of the base, then the base is really lost in the wilderness as many are saying.

In time, she will have the opportunity to speak on national issues more often. For now, if she sets one foot outside of Alaska, her critics howl like the sky is falling.

“Insiders” = out of touch idiots.

scrubjay on May 16, 2009 at 12:06 AM

If they don’t want Sarah, that’s fine. I’ll go where she goes.

littleguy on May 16, 2009 at 12:37 AM

LOL!

I just looked over this GOP Political Insiders list and most of them are the same bunch of cookie cutter lame RINO elite pundits that you see on the cable newsers or NPR. These are the GOP elites that don’t “get” or like Sarah Palin and other true conservatives like Rush Limbaugh amd Ann Coulter in the first place. These insiders would have never chosen Palin as VP nominee in a zillion years.

Kevin Madden, John Feehery, Todd Harris, Benjamin Ginsburg, Mike Murphy and many on that list are CNN/MSNBC regulars who can’t seem to put up a cogent argument on behalf of the GOP against the likes of Paul Begala or Chris Matthews.

Mike Murphy is the pundit who was caught dissing Palin and McCain with Peggy Noonan while they thought they were off the air on MSNBC.

sarahpalinfan99 on May 16, 2009 at 12:39 AM

Aren’t these “insiders” the same idiots who championed Mcshame? They probably want to put Meghan on the ticket.

AS for Cheney hurting the party PLEASE. He is the only one with Stones articulating ANYTHING! I also happen to like what he is saying. I am pretty sure rank and file conservatives (NOT REPUBLICANS) feel the same way.

America1st on May 16, 2009 at 12:53 AM

What a load of crap. Screw the elites…they gave us McCain.

The TOTUS is yanking this country towards a total goverment takeover of, well, it seems EVERYTHING. Healthcare, Banks, the Auto Industry (if there’s one left), Energy Industries, etc etc…while spending imaginary TRILLION$ of dollars that haven’t even been printed yet. We are being robbed of our future, and the fraud is brazenly happening in front of our eyes.

Thanks for watching our backs, Big Media, you slimy turncoats. I get little pleasure, but some, watching you go bankrupt while protecting this FRAUD.

I believe the people are waking up. The Tea Parties are proof positive, and although we were belittled, insulted, and dismissed, there were at least a million people out protesting that day. I expect the July 4 Tea Parties to be WAY bigger, landing on a WEEKEND this time.

People are and have been confused by all these “big issues”, which even I admit to struggle grasping the Magnitude and Complexity of it all, and how it all ties together. We just don’t have the resources. But this is where I see people like Glenn Beck being very important. His ratings rising with a bullet indicate that The People are hungry for someone who can distill these complex times into something they can digest, and his simple card tricks and chalkboards and M&Ms and other cheap props are a stroke of brilliance, IMO. The “Folks” are connecting and relating to it, and the lights are going on!

He is creating a movement that is outside the party. Even Rush and Hannity don’t claim to be Repubs, as far as I know. They are conservatives, as most of America is. We don’t need a third party, we need Americans to listen up and pay attention. And The Movement needs a face, and what better face than Saracuda’s?! She has taken on her party and won. She has taken on corruption and won. She’s a mother, an entrepreneur, a competitor, and a PRINCIPLED person. The media CONTINUES to attack her (you too AP?), but she’s brushes off what would wither lesser pols. (Publicly anyway) She comes from modest means, but she has evolved into a leader.

IMO, in a couple years, The People will be hungry for a plain speaking Common Sense leader. They will be disgusted with the corruption and the government intervention into every aspect of their lives. And there will be MASSIVE support for the leader that emerges. I see no one (at this moment) who can eclipse Palin in this regard.

Just my opinion…it probly cost you more than its worth…

I barely recognize a name on the list and most of the ones I do recognize can be summed up withe phrase “old and busted”.
