Poll of GOP “insiders”: Palin ties for seventh as pol with brightest future

posted at 7:50 pm on May 15, 2009 by Allahpundit

She’s lost the elites, although of course her fans would say she never had them. Bear in mind these “insiders” also say, by an overwhelming majority, that Dick Cheney’s media campaign has done more to hurt the party than help it notwithstanding Obama’s climbdown on the detainee photos and the ongoing circus surrounding Madam Speaker. Caveat emptor:

She finished three votes ahead of … “no one”? Surely these people know how much the base adores her and how much money she’s capable of raising; to put her on an equal footing with Mitch Daniels under those circumstances means they think she’s either already destroyed her credibility or that she’ll inevitably destroy it once she’s back in the glare of a campaign. I’d like to believe that’s not true, but with the media poised to seize every mistake to push its narrative that she’s the second coming of Dan Quayle, she’d have to play error-free ball to prevent it — and how likely is that?

If this poll means anything, it means she’ll have to work twice as hard now to convince skeptical fundraisers and organizers that they’re better off joining her campaign before the 2011 primaries than that of a more polished candidate. How she’d go about doing that at this point, I just don’t know. Raise money money money, I guess, and the talent will follow.

Because you need people like this to help run a campaign. As much as you wish it weren’t true, it is.

Allahpundit on May 15, 2009 at 7:54 PM

And as much as we’d like otherwise, the “insiders” matter significantly in who gets picked. McCain was hardly the choice of the base, yet he won the nomination. You can scream about grassroots and “real conservatives” throwing these bums out until you’re blue in the face, but the fact remains that they’re very powerful and influential in the process.

Don’t forget these same elites are working harder than ever to make sure the primaries stay in the upper northeast so we can have the Republican Candidate for President in 2012 determined by a few thousand Democrats-In-Disguise.

Just like last time.

Naturally they will continue to shout to the rafters that Palin…..has………….NO…………SHOT!!!

Didnt the “insiders” think John McCain & Giuliani were the GOP saviors not long ago?

DwnSouthJukin on May 15, 2009 at 7:57 PM

Well, the silver lining is she beat a pretty big machine Alaska GOP incumbant on a grassroots, power-to-the people wave. I know the national stage is not the same as Alaska, but if she gets a bunch of small donations from lots of people, as opposed to lots of money from just a few bigwigs, it can be done.

The force is with you, Sarah-wan.

My question is: Is the word “bright” appropriate in the following sentence: “Nelson Rockefeller had a ‘bright’ career.” Because any self-respecting conservative would run like banshees were chasing them from Charlie Crist. He’s appalling and gives me the creeps.

Time will only tell, of course, but I’m less concerned with who’s got a “future” and who’s “electable” and more concerned with who can defend and articulate conservatism properly. The popularity-style of candidate-choosing, though it has legitimacy, has failed us too many times.

She finished three votes ahead of … “no one”?

I think Dennis Miller had a joke that went like, Walter Mondale only beat me by 13 electoral votes, and I didn’t even run! Made me chuckle, a little.

amerpundit on May 15, 2009 at 7:57 PM

The most melancholy task for a politician is winning the support of people who agree with you, but don’t believe in you. Palin does need these people if she’s going to stage another national campaign, and to get them, she’s going to have to convince them she’s got a plausible strategy for winning. Political power brokers don’t like risky investments any more than stock brokers do.

Palin’s admirers often cite the large crowds of energetic fans who turn out to hear her speak as an “army” of voters. If they’re the army, and she’s the general, then these GOP insiders are the non-commissioned officers. Without them, the army lacks the infrastructure to function. With the electorate as sharply divided as it is, producing a political landscape in which a few percentage points turns defeat into a stunning victory, I don’t think a purely populist movement has much chance of sweeping anyone into office, no matter how much they love her. The political professionals have to be on board… and, conversely, the pros need to back someone who has spirit, vision, and a connection with the base.

I like Sarah Palin, and I think she’s got a lot to offer both the party and the nation. She’s been left with very little room for error, as Allahpundit astutely pointed out. She also has to do something spectacular to get the smart money behind her. Helping to orchestrate big gains in 2010 would be an excellent start. The One is working pretty hard to leave the political football lying on the field. She needs to pick it up and do something crazy with it.

Good. The Republican Party is dead, and the direction chosen by the zombie rebranding insiders is certain to be the wrong one.

Try the same poll with the people who voted for Palin and that maverick What’s-His-Name in 2008 and you will get dramatically different results. This poll does not, as suggested, herald the exit of Sarah Palin from the political scene, but is instead dramatic evidence of the distance between “insider” Republicans and their former base.

Erich66 on May 15, 2009 at 8:21 PM

I believe Gov. Palin is doing the right thing.
Taking care of her state and hitting the national scene when it benefits her and Republican constituents the most.

She made a great showing in support of pro-life and brought the house down with a moving speech.

She made a great statement in defense of Miss. California.

But most of all she is concentrating on her job as Governor. Her record will do a lot of the talking for her along with many people realizing that she was smeared heavily during her run as VP.

I don’t think the political atmosphere will be so anti-Republican as it was in the 2008 race.

The fact the press is going to be hard on her certainly is important in the fact of how she handles them and what she allows them to get away with. The Gibson/Couric interviews were certainly wins for liberals but when the McCain campaign allowed Mrs. Palin to be Mrs. Palin,I thought she handled herself well (most notably in the VP debate where Biden made the gaffes and mistakes, not Mrs. Palin).

She will be a lot more experienced with the Press and I think will handle it much better this time.

Plus, the Republicans could put up the second coming of Ghandi and the liberals would still brand him as a stupid, racist, war monger that wants to eat your babies.

I think one of her biggest concerns is campaign strategy
and making sure she has competent, experienced people around
her.

I am a big Rudy fan and was seriously disappointed in the
terrible campaign that he ran and the inept people around him.

She gets herself in shape with the right issues (energy, taxes, excess spending, national security) and puts together a sharp staff that can promote this,I think she has a great chance.

Allahpundit on May 15, 2009 at 7:54 PM

Tell it AP!! Shout it from the rooftops!!

JohnGalt23 on May 15, 2009 at 8:25 PM

Sorry, not buying that he would have one either way. Let’s be fair to ourselves for a change.

Blake on May 15, 2009 at 8:20 PM

I agree with the idea that in 2000 or 2004 if McCain was the nominee he would have won.

The problem is that in 2006 the Democrats rediscovered the old time Political machine politics of the early 19th century. It was the old ward bosses who got people out to vote and were “Community organizers”.

The GOP didnt catch on (and still hasnt) that what started with John Kennedy in 1960 (The Television age of the Presidency) is no longer valid.

Just putting a politician on TV and running unending ads no longer works. You have to out organize your oponents not out media them.

The problem with the GOP elite is that they are old dinosaur media lovers. They got stuck in the JFK tv era and cant seem to see the forest for the trees.

If she can win two early states watch them jump on board.

KBird on May 15, 2009 at 8:27 PM

Does this mean that she can’t get any decent advisers on her corner? Or does money speak louder in this case?

TimeTraveler on May 15, 2009 at 8:29 PM

And I have to be honest. The GOP elites dont like the “Unwashed masses” of the political parties. They really see us as just tools that can be utilized and have our buttons pushed to get us to fall in line with their “Superior” plans.

stupid.

Hah. Gov. Perma tan. First met him when he was Florida Attorney General while I was at law school then met him again at the his “victory” party when he won the governors office. One thing I will say about Gov. Perma tan he had a bevy of the most gorgeous young model types working for him/entourage good gawd. Although he’s married now.

elduende on May 15, 2009 at 8:29 PM

but with the media poised to seize every mistake to push its narrative that she’s the second coming of Dan Quayle, she’d have to play error-free ball to prevent it — and how likely is that?

And that is the crux of our problem. I like her a lot, but for ill or for good, she’s been damaged by nearly equal measures McCain campaign mishandling, MSM assassination, and her own babe-in-the-woods approach to national campaigning. She’s simply not credible as a candidate in enough minds to be viable – that goes without saying for the left, but they’ve succeeded in poisoning her for the political amateurs. You’re right Allah, she’s got to make no mistakes, and that is impossible, unless she has a press willing to ignore or cover for her like the current President. Fat Chance – the conventional wisdom is set and it’s a sttep climb to overcome.

JeffWeimer on May 15, 2009 at 8:30 PM

You don’t win without votes.

McCain could never get votes. The insiders lost because they picked McCain. Ergo, the insiders lost this last election.

You can have a flashy campaign, but you don’t win without the votes, and you need a Candidate who will bring in the voters.

Chaz706 on May 15, 2009 at 8:31 PM

Who are these insiders, what is there philosophy and leanings and what are their motives?

I don’t trust anything the ‘GOP insiders’ say. They all have an agenda. They know it and we know it.

technopeasant on May 15, 2009 at 8:31 PM

“The Insiders”. I’ll bet you’ll find some lousy book at Amazon with the same name.

And … voila! I did:

“The Insiders” by acclaimed international best-selling author Craig Hickman is a tech-savvy suspense novel filled with the vices of vicious men.

Wonder how close this comes to describing these 99 “Insiders.”

Allahpundit on May 15, 2009 at 7:54 PM

Still, they need the base more than the base needs them.

Unless Palin commits some sort of outrageous faux pas or outright crime, there will be such bitterness among the base that all the “insiders” can do all they want, but it will be for absolutely nothing. Many in the GOP base will have thought that the MSM succeeded in destroying THEIR candidate, and they’ll tell the Republican party to goto hell. We’re looking at an overwhelming Obama win in 2012.

ddrintn on May 15, 2009 at 8:32 PM

Allahpundit, I apologize for being picky, but Palin came in tied for eighth place, not seventh.

Loxodonta on May 15, 2009 at 8:32 PM

Until we break through with more balanced mainstream news, i fear we’re screwed..

stlpatriot on May 15, 2009 at 8:22 PM

Ronald Reagan had a democrat Congress and a very hostile media. He was able to communicate to people and touch them. I know, because I was a raving lib then (hey! I was young) and he was the first president I voted for!

It didn’t hurt that he had a great sense of humor and was able to not only laugh at his enemies, but himself as well.

He need that kind of talent again! I know it’s out there!

vapig on May 15, 2009 at 8:33 PM

I like the idea that she’s not even on the list….less to try to prove. Let the other hacks do their thing and burn out early.

She has the momentum and she has the ability to move the masses one way or the other. Allah can keep dreaming that she isn’t on the list and Barack Obama can breathe a sigh of relief, but you should never underestimate a woman like the Cuda….we tend to maneuver you where you say you don’t want to be, with a wink and a smile.

shomegirl on May 15, 2009 at 8:33 PM

Well they can’t be the brightest group if they think a politician from Mississippi has any kind of future at the national level. Haley Barbour is a great guy, but they’re deluded if they think the American people will vote for the pudgy white guy from the DEEP South.

Stickeehands on May 15, 2009 at 8:36 PM

She’s lost the elites, although of course her fans would say she never had them.

Honestly, you don’t have to be a fan to recognize that as a fact.

She’s a first-term governor from a remote state who cut her teeth on bucking the establishment politicians in her state and who has demonstrated a willingness to cross party lines to get things done… and she’s a woman. She’s not one of the boys.

Obviously the media thing is a problem for Palin, but I gotta’ say it would be one heck less of a problem if “party insiders” and these supposedly wonderful campaign consultants would stop stabbing her in the back. Anyway, I don’t think she’ll have any trouble attracting a bright, forward-looking team to her campaign (should she ever run for President) or have trouble raising money. The challenge she has is message control. If the media is against you and your own party leaders (I use that term very loosely) are sniping at you, then I’m not sure if an enthusiastic base can put you over the top.

And, by the way, if Mitch Daniels is on the list, it’s a pretty weird list. The guy made a hack job of moving the state over to observing daylight savings time, for cripes sake! Not a very impressive executive. And, did he deliver Indiana for McCain this year???

Y-not on May 15, 2009 at 8:37 PM

Palin/Prejean 2012! I just want to watch the seizures on the left. :)

Seriously though, polls can change depending on events, so I really don`t pay them much attention. If her numbers don`t get any better by 2011, time to worry.

ThePrez on May 15, 2009 at 8:37 PM

Wow, even more surprising is no Romney or Huck.
