Pathetic: Pelosi plays down CIA criticism, blames Bush instead

posted at 7:07 pm on May 15, 2009 by Allahpundit

After a week of increasingly desperate, cowardly excuses, she saved the best for last. Mind-boggling.

“We all share great respect for the dedicated men and women of the intelligence community who are deeply committed to the safety and security of the American people,” she said in a statement issued by her office. “My criticism of the manner in which the Bush Administration did not appropriately inform Congress is separate from my respect for those in the intelligence community who work to keep our country safe.

“What is important now is to be united in our commitment to ensuring the security of our country; that, and how Congress exercises its oversight responsibilities, will continue to be my focus as we move forward.”

I don’t know what she could possibly mean by this after yesterday’s “the CIA misleads us all the time” sandbagging unless she’s now accusing Team Bush of pulling aside the agents in charge of briefings and ordering them to lie. Which is insane given that (a) by her own admission, agents did brief Congress about waterboarding Abu Zubaydah by early 2003; (b) in the political climate of the time, with Democrats gung ho to prove their “toughness” on terrorism, Bush had less to fear that they’d be squeamish about waterboarding if he told them than that they’d be enraged if he didn’t tell them because he thought they might be squeamish; and (c) according to Pelosi’s logic here, if this is all just another of the Bushitler’s conspiracies, then her failure to mention it until now means she’s been essentially covering for George Bush.

I don’t think she’s accusing Bush of anything here, actually. This statement is no more or less than her way of waving the white flag, eating her words about the CIA before she does any more damage or stumbles into any more idiotic non sequiturs about creating jobs in response to torture queries, and mindlessly dumping the whole thing in the lap of the left’s all-purpose villain. She gives up. It’s all Bush’s fault, even if it isn’t. No further questions, please.

At least Steny Hoyer claims to believe her now, even if the White House doesn’t. Needless to say, the longer this drags out, the more reminiscent it is of the Democrats’ turn on Iraq. When Pelosi had an opportunity to act and stop something she (supposedly) thought was wrong, she kept her mouth shut good and tight lest it jeopardize the party’s chances at the polls in a time of war. Now, after the die is cast, she wants truth commissions and investigations and tribunals to purge the guilt and please her base. Too bad the left is so stridently opposed to “preemptive” action; it would have saved them a lot of grief six years ago.

Your ship is sinking old woman. They will simply replace her with another liberal windbag though.

Yes, but that replacement liberal windbag will not have seniority; the replacement Speaker will not represent a district loaded with quite so many moonbats.

This suggests a way to take down the rep’s of those most moonbatty districts: catch them in contradictions. Moonbattery requires self-deception; representing moonbats while holding positions of authority requires doublethink. If they actually do anything (Pelosi made the mistake of trying to call the CIA a liar) they can be called on it. And the more often it is done successfully, the easier it will be able to do as the public catches on and the media doesn’t want to be stained by the splash while carrying their water.

I hope Pelosi hangs on (as she no doubt will, being a Democrat). She’s entertaining.

I hope she stays around until 2010. She is the best thing we have going for us in the midterms. Of course I think that is why the White House is trying to throw her under the bus right now.

Nancy Pelosi said the liberals would “drain the swamp” if they were elected to the majority in congress. Instead, they created a bigger and deeper swamp, filled with the stench of corruption and financial disaster.

He tried for years to get nuke capabilities/weapons. He ignored the UN. What are you supposed to do, just ignore a guy who killed hundreds of thousands of kurds with gas? A guy who threw people in wood chippers feet first? A guy who chopped off the legs of the soccer team after a big loss? I’ll stand with the President of the United States of America, thanks.

I’m feeling sorry for her. Not because she doesn’t deserve it because she does.

Huh? Doesn’t or does? MAKE SENSE. Please?

I once said here on Hotair that I found her oddly attractive, but never have I seen expressions of sympathy for this tyrant.

Screening step one for that web page is to group the comments, with those zip codes within Pelosi’s Congressional District going first, those outside Pelosi’s district but within California going second, all other US zips going third, and foreign/no zips going fourth. Expect, as is traditional, that only the first group actually gets read by Pelosi’s staff, with second and beyond getting polite responses to contact the congressperson in whose district the commenter lies.

few days ago, I posted a humorous bit on the Nancy Pelosi/CIA flap. Unfortunately, this issue is not funny. It seems every day, the story takes a new turn. It would be more accurate to say that Speaker Pelosi’s story takes a new turn with each passing day.

Whatever your politics or your opinion of the CIA-or water boarding, it is hard to defend Pelosi on this one. She has publicly accused the CIA with lying to Congress. Now she is trying to put the onus back on the Bush Administration. The Speaker has changed her story almost every day as each version is refuted. Is there anybody out there who still believes her? Is there still anybody out there who takes her seriously? Is there anybody out there who still thinks she is fit to be Speaker of the House?

Or even fit to serve in Congress?

When a politician makes such serious charges against an agency like the CIA, they had better be prepared to back it up. If Pelosi speaks the truth, then the public would have to be alarmed at the CIA. This means that the truth of the matter must be brought out. If, in fact, Pelosi, after condemning water boarding and calling for a “truth commission”, is found to have been briefed on the water boarding in September 2002, it makes her a hypocrite of epic proportions. If she then lied to us-in Clintonian style- about what she was told and falsely accused the CIA in an effort to cover up, she is unfit to remain in public office.

Two things need to happen here. First of all, Pelosi needs to be put under oath. Second, President Obama needs to step forward, find out the truth-which he could do quickly-and if appropriate, publicly defend his agency. Up to now, the President has been strangely silent.

Kudos to Leon Panetta.

President Obama, where art Thou?

this woman is so stupid she can’t keep up with her mouth and what comes out of it. is she actually in charge of anything in our government, if she is she needs to be removed and put in a room where she can’t hurt anyone.

Deflecting is an art with Demoncrates. Speaker Phuloshit does not want to accept any responsibility for her actions or the actions of the left they blame President Bush. She has had her opportunity to put forward the Demoncrates message but has failed miserably because of she continually tries to put her ego above all else.

I have a solution for this kind of “definition of is, is” speak by politicians:
.
From the point a politician is sworn into office, and until the end of their term as an elected official, they are under oath. This way if (when) they lie to the citizens, they will be committing perjury and can be tried in a criminal trial!
.
Why not? would this work? What do you guys think?
