My vacation reading list
posted at 1:35 pm on May 15, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
As TEMS viewers already know, I’m going for a week-long vacation with the First Mate for the first real down time I’ve had in three years. The boss insisted on it, although she also wondered whether I’ll be able to resist getting on line and writing for that long. We’ll have to see. What’s the over/under on how long it will be before I post something while on vacation? Vote in the poll:
Of course, while on vacation, I’ll have plenty of opportunity to catch up on reading, a luxury that full-time blogging sometimes eclipses. The three books I’ll take along just arrived this week, and the first two have a particular interest to our family. First, Larry’s Kidney tells the story of how a man traveled to China to donate a kidney to his brother, and the travails he endured to do it. Sally Satel’s collection of arguments on whether to offer compensation for kidney donations, When Altruism Isn’t Enough, should be provocative, too, as the First Mate has received two live-donor kidneys without compensation. I discussed this with her nephrologist, who had some surprising opinions about the issue.
Lastly, I’ll try to squeeze in the new biography of Curtis LeMay, an oft-maligned, oft-celebrated figure in American military history, titled simply LeMay. We’ll see if Warren Kozak sheds light on the man usually credited with carpet-bombing, and who helped America win World War II.
Update (AP): Consider this an early alert for our Greenroom contributors that there’ll be plenty of room for promoting posts to the front page next week. Keep the content coming, or I warn you: I’ll be forced to resort to a week’s worth of Meghan McCain posts to fill the gap.

And Ed? Enjoy your vacation–you deserve every bit of it. Resist that temptation to post. In fact, don’t even read the paper or turn on the computer!

Oh, and every other greenroom contributor as well, of course…..
Vanceone on May 15, 2009 at 1:39 PM
I think if it gets hot and heavy with pelosi, ed will end up posting.

Re: LeMay
I’ve watched WW2 interviews of B-29 crews, talking about the Tokyo bombings of March, ’45. The firestorm was so big and so intense, that their planes were getting hit by pieces of buildings, etc., that had been caught up into the vortex.
I always wondered – what did the Japanese think, when hundreds of B-29s were leveling their cities? I wonder if they remembered their ’41 grins and celebrations?

Ed and FM have a wonderful relaxing vacation.

Shouldn’t you the Missus be doing something else?!

Dead Heat by Joel Rosenberg is worth a look.

Allah I will fly my butt down to NY to take your skinny butt up to Alaska, when Ed comes back, and MAKE you fish and clean them!
Don’t temp me little beta boy. I bet I CAN get information out of Ed… and I am good at getting info.

How about the boss posting back here? Love her site but can’t comment there. Help us out, Michelle.
Christian Conservative on May 15, 2009 at 1:54 PM
Have a great time Ed…..and stay away from the computer so you can recharge your mental batteries.
May I suggest some excellent, light reading for the first mate?
The Forgotten Garden: A Novel
It’s a beautifully written generational tale that she will really enjoy.
And for a great adventure tale to take your mind off of todays awful news, may I suggest The Lost City of Z: A Tale of Deadly Obsession in the Amazon It’s already been optioned for a movie staring Brad Pitt as Percy Faucett.
It’s a great read, check it out. And have fun!!!
Knucklehead on May 15, 2009 at 1:55 PM
Ed, I’m surprised that you don’t have the Amazon Kindle, in which case you could take an entire library of books from which to choose. Enjoy, either way!

A week of Allah. Unbearable. I think I’ll take a week off from Hot Air,too.

Every time comments registration is open there, I am told my e-mail address is already registered. Some of the HA commenters also comment there, but I cant’ figure it out.
BigD on May 15, 2009 at 1:56 PM
I wish I had coordinated my vaca with this…now I’ll be searching the green room and NRO since I won’t be able to handle all the Meagan McLame posts AllahP will print.

Have a great time,Ed!
I guess this means we’ll have to put up with twice as much of strangelet put up obnoxious posts and sucking up to AP at the same time.
kingsjester on May 15, 2009 at 1:56 PM
put up=putting up.
Oops.
kingsjester on May 15, 2009 at 1:58 PM
When we lived in St. Louis County we lived near the intersection of Lemay Ferry & Lindburgh Blvd.
I referred to it as “Aviator Alley”.
Curtis Lemay was willing to do what was RIGHT-even if it was the harder decision-unlike many today.

I almost forgot:
Ed, I hope that you and your Lady have a fun, safe trip.
annoyinglittletwerp on May 15, 2009 at 2:01 PM
Same here. I love reading there, but am not allowed to post, and I’ve yet to see anywhere, where you can register. :(
capejasmine on May 15, 2009 at 2:01 PM
Enjoy your vacation! But only 3 books? I always pack for one a day when I go on vacation.
ladyingray on May 15, 2009 at 2:01 PM
She does what HA does. I know she has had a couple of registrations, but I have had yet to see it in person.
upinak on May 15, 2009 at 2:04 PM
Thanks for the info :) Very much appreciated!
capejasmine on May 15, 2009 at 2:09 PM
I thought I was the only one who did that! It takes me longer to figure out what type of reading material I’m packing than what clothes to bring.
Knucklehead on May 15, 2009 at 2:09 PM
Ed, have a great vacation!
While you’re away from the limelight, try shaving your head once. You’ll like how it looks and will forevermore be appalled by the idea of getting in front of a camera without having done so :)
DarkCurrent on May 15, 2009 at 2:10 PM
Have a pleasant time Ed!
The Curtis LeMay book looks interesting.
We’ll endure a whole week of Allah. It’ll be fun, mischievous, annoying, and eye-popping to say the least.

myrenovations on May 15, 2009 at 2:20 PM
Nope you are not. I consider having the time to read a book a day to be my vacation….
ladyingray on May 15, 2009 at 2:23 PM
What are we going to do without Ed’s optimism to check Allah’s pessimism? We’ll all be in a bunker with cyanide pills by Monday.
(JK, Allah. We look forward to some you-time.)
amerpundit on May 15, 2009 at 2:29 PM
I’d say reading about the Cold War-era LeMay would be more interesting. There is a lot of speculation on whether or not he wanted to get America into a nuclear war with the Soviet Union.
aengus on May 15, 2009 at 2:42 PM
Hey Ed,
Here is a book recommendation. This guy is a great writer, and given that Afghanistan is experiencing a troop build up (real time) you might want to bone up on the start of the Afghanistan campaign. And read about the folks defending us right after 9/11.

Have a great vacation, Ed!
Greenroom contributors, I beg you, PLEASE rescue us from a weeks worth of Meggie Mac posts! I don’t think I can handle that!

Look, I’m not gonna pretend to have a good relationship with Ed. But even Ed’s fans might agree that this picture needs to be replaced.
The first time I saw it I thought inside the post was his announcement that he had cancer. I’m sure there must be much better pictures somewhere in a drawer.
radiofreevillage on May 15, 2009 at 3:09 PM
Cowboy: It basically broke their culture for all time, and laid the foundation for what it is today. Even now you occasionally see “B-29-san” in childrens’ shows; usually as a menacing boogeyman but occasionally (and even creepier) as a cartoonish spirit of peace. Steven Den Beste had a post about it a few years ago with pictures of the latter (it was a post about the Yamato as I recall). How broken did it ultimately get? Check this out; a comparison of Navy recruitment ads for the USN vs the JNSDF.

I think the Green Room team was a fantastic idea, the talent has turned out to be first-rate, and I’m definitely looking forward to front page exposure for those guys next week.
And I do look forward to Ed’s return.

I’ve also had trouble commenting on Michelle’s site…as annoyinglittletwerp.
I guess I had registered there a long time back as ALT but never got to commenting. Since ALT is “registered” under a former e-mail that I can’t remember I ended up registering again as cubbiegal.
annoyinglittletwerp on May 15, 2009 at 3:14 PM
Bastard! I’ll take Dude and humping robot posts over Miss MacCain any day!.
Ed: Two old books by William Manchester (his politics, meh. His writing, subperb).
Goodbye, Darkness: A Memoir of the Pacific War
The Glory and the Dream: A Narrative History of America, 1932–1972

Groan. This would definitely bring new meaning to “torture.”
Come on AP, you set yourself up for gettin’ some love in the comments! haha
I look forward to seeing the Green Room contributors getting some Front Page face time. This has been a great addition to the site.

DarkCurrent on May 15, 2009 at 4:16 PM
You guys are missing the obvious reading material for Ed to take along: Maxim‘s hottest women issue. I hear there’s a real “looker” at number 93.

It depends: if Ed’s gone – and I get the impression he will be – he won’t have too hard a time not blogging. If he’s at home, however, it’s an entirely different affair altogether.
Trust me, I know. At home having time off is pretty much useless. Being somewhere else, different surroundings, other things to see, places to visit, people to meet, not blogging for a week isn’t a problem.

There certainly is room to demote AllahPundit posts to the Greenroom, as well.
Ed,
Your insightful analysis will be missed — especially when AP tries to turn HA into a vapid online version of People magazine.
