Germany balking at Gitmo list
posted at 8:46 am on May 15, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
European countries such as Germany led the criticism of the detention of terrorists captured abroad at Guantanamo Bay and have demanded their release for years. When it comes to volunteering to have them running free in their own countries, however, these allies suddenly get a case of laryngitis when the US asks for volunteers. Barack Obama wants Berlin to take nine of the 250 inmates at Gitmo, but the Germans have thus far answered nein!
Berlin is being asked to take in nine Guantanamo inmates. So far the development is perceived as a first test of trans-Atlantic relations under President Barack Obama. In Germany, there are legitimate questions about the Uighur Chinese it is being asked to take in –but the Interior Ministry also appears to be buying time in an election year. …
Bavaria’s Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann — of the Christian Social Union, Bavaria’s sister party to Merkel’s Christian Democrats — called the request an “imposition” by the US. “We don’t need people like this in Germany,” he told the mass circulation tabloid Bild. “It would be extremely naive (of German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier) to let these people into the country.” Steinmeier himself, though, has kept relatively quiet on the subject — though he has been consistent in his support of the Obama administration.
In addition to issues of security, however, Steinmeier is equally concerned with the issue’s foreign policy implications. Firstly, this is one of the initial tests of the new trans-Atlantic relationship between the central Europeans and the Americans since the change of administration in the White House. At the same time Steinmeier, who is also the Social Democratic candidate for chancellor, has to consider the damage it could do to at-times volatile German-Chinese relations. As soon as the Obama administration’s wishes with regard to the Uighur prisoners were made public, a variety of Chinese diplomats paid a visit to Steinmeier’s offices. What, they wondered, was the German position on this Uighur question? The Chinese were told that a final decision had not yet been made.
People find it much easier to carp from the sidelines than to actually do the work and take the risks. Germany is a pretty good example of this on Afghanistan as well, although hardly the only one. They refuse to take combat roles, preferring to fill slots more commonly referenced as REMFs by American military veterans.
Until now, they’ve been REMFs on Gitmo, too. They want the detainees released, but presumably not in China, where the Uighers will get locked up or worse by Beijing, who for some reason consider radical Muslims who have trained at al-Qaeda camps (by their own admission) dangerous. Germany and its European allies would prefer that Obama simply set them all free in the US, but Obama would like to win re-election in 2012, and the freed-the-terrorists-to-live-among-us vote is a shockingly limited demographic.
Berlin has a problem. They want to show that their opposition to American policy related to the very unpopular George Bush, and show an affinity for the very popular Barack Obama. Will they want that enough to welcome trained AQ terrorists into Germany? Somehow, I think that Angela Merkel will find more ways to punt on the Uighers.

Being a hypocrite is a part of being a politician. Obama is finding out that your “friends” have more respect for you when they see strength that the wetness of his kiss on their backsides. Obama is making a laughingstock of our country and will get less accomplished that the “hated” Bush. His “playground” mentality does not work in a world of grown ups unless it is to facilitate their best interests and diminish ours. Being naive has it’s price.

That is one (of many) areas where Bush went wrong, he should have been more vocal about the need for GITMO and publicly called out these Euro hypocrites on this shit years ago. Obama is a complete idiot for grandstanding on the closure of the facility then having no plan on what to do with the prisoners. It is going to stay open, end of story.

Is there some point when we can throw our hands up and send these people back to China? And isn’t it funny that all the “progressives” bitch at the US about the Uighars, but never seem to muster any outrage at the country we can’t send them back to, because they would be tortured or killed? China seems like pretty good proof that it’s better to be feared by the world than loved by the world.

Huh, I never would have figured that other nations wouldn’t want to freely accept terrorists inside their borders, what are they thinking?
“Oh well, I tried” says Ogabe, “I guess they’ll just have to be released here in the U.S.” *heavy sigh*
Bishop on May 15, 2009 at 9:03 AM
Gee, since the libtards tell us we should act like Europeans who don’t want trained terrorists released on their soil, doesn’t the progressive wing of the democrap party, now have to say that they don’t want the Gitmos released on US soil?
Of course not, they want these terrorists to commit heinous acts to further the overthrow of the US government and economy. Therefore, the Euroweenies want the US government and economy to be overthrown and ‘hopefully’ replaced with a true socialist/marxist model, and the Euros would then be second only to China in economic strength and power.

Here’s a good (quick) read…
Obama is trying to vote “present” once again. After all, if Obama truly wanted to block the release of these photos in order to protect American troops, he could issue an executive order taking them beyond the reach of the courts and the Freedom of Information Act. Instead, Obama’s heading back to the courtroom to relitigate the matter. This way, if the courts reaffirm that the photos must be released, Obama can say, “My hands are tied.”

We should put the Uighers in a boat in the North Atlantic, and whatever country they make it to, gets to deal with the problem.

What is Obama’s problem with the Uighers? Turn them over to the Chinese because, well, they’re Chinese. Why is he thumbing our biggest creditor in the eye over some terrorists? It’s not as if these guys stared down tanks in Tienamen Square. Ship ‘em to Bejing and move on.
Seriously. What’s the left going to do? Vote for Palin in 2012? Obama might even solidify some support from idiotic swing voters.
All that said, I’ll bet he’s holding on to these guys so that he can periodically distract the GOP in Congress and Americans while he’s sneaking through his health-care “reform” and cap-and-trade.

You have to understand that “center-right” doesn’t really mean what it does in the US. The CDU/CSU is “center-right” by American standards only if you believe that Obama is a “moderate”… und das ist total Quatsch!

Glenn, Your ignorance is only exceeded by your vanity. I lived over there 6 years (auch in Bayern) and know very well from reading the (German) papers online which party thinks what, thank you very much/danke schön.
I labeled the parties for the general benefit of those not as familiar with the situation (no need to go into FDP, PDS, heh), not for you.
As the CDU has already begun to thumb its nose at Telebama, I saw no reason why Ed Morissey should make the statement he did, and therefore posed my question.

I have never understood the argument about not giving them back to the countries they are from. Holding us responsible for what might happen to them afterwards is insane. Try holding their home countries responsible – they hatched them!
vapig on May 15, 2009 at 10:44 AM
There’s only one solution that Islamically acceptable.
Free all the Gitmo jihadis on a deserted island in the Pacific… with no native water and no vegetation… and then simply let their Allah provide for them.
That way we are not responsible for the terrorists anymore.
And have not harmed them.
And no other countries need be involved.
(Ring the island with patrol boats to retrieve any bodies of those swimmers who drown trying to paddle back to Mecca and give the hapless mujihadeen burials at sea… a 50 lb. bag of sand and some yellow cord should suffice..)
We can name the island The Republic of Gitmostan.

I love how they hollar from the roof tops, about the injustices being thrown on “innocent” detainees. Detainees they feel are being locked up illegally, and immorally, but when it comes down to living up to what they preach, they cower back, and say…..we don’t want terrorists in our backyard.
Well we don’t either. So my advice would be….either own up to the principles you preach, or shut up!

Seriously tho, I can’t figure out what agenda is served by trying to house them almost anywhere else rather than send them home to China. And I also can’t understand how it can serve his agenda good enough to risk biting the hand that loans money to us. I guess we’ll find out soon enough.

I live in Germany. Of course they don´t want suspected terrorists in their country. No German politican is going to waste his capital on them. Only an American liberal would so stupid.
That´s what the American left gets for believing (and exploiting domestically) the reckless demagoguery of our “allies”. Germans never truly cared about the war, terrorism, Iraqi civilians, what have you. They just wanted to score some cheap points. If they actually cared about a bunch of Uighurs or Arabs, they could be doing a lot more than just bash America and Israel.
And I can assure you: if they had to take Gitmo inmates into their country, people would be mad (again) at America for drawing them into this mess when all they wanted was heckle from the sidelines. Didn´t Obama want to restore America´s reputation in the world? All he does is diminish it even more.
el gordo on May 15, 2009 at 1:35 PM
Make no mistake, it doesn´t really matter which party is running Germany, CDU, SPD, Greens, whatever. Letting suspected terrorists in is just not smart politics. The left uses Gitmo to beat up on America, the CDU is a tiny bit more realistic. But in the end, who but an American liberal wants these non-cuddly types living next to their voters?
Cynical Europeans often don´t believe their own rhetoric. Americans usually do – and that´s great – but they shouldn´t believe everyone else´s as well.
el gordo on May 15, 2009 at 4:35 PM
Probably right, as I am 21 years old and in college… ergo I am super cool and know everything :-P
I thought you were going through the liberal logic that if someone has “conservative” somewhere in their resumé, they are automatically conservative (i.e. Bush, a “conservative” passed the auto bailout, so Obama isn’t a socialist).
You probably are more well-versed on national politics than I am then. One a personal level, I am seeing much the same phenomenon as in America. Support for Obama Policy X,Y,Z is average or low… support for Obama is high.
