Why don’t the Democrats dump Pelosi? Update: “If it was a crime, she was part of it”

posted at 5:44 pm on May 14, 2009 by Allahpundit
Share on Facebook | printer-friendly

Not now, I mean — there’ll have to be some hard proof from the CIA first that she is indeed the pathetic liar the whole country suspects her of being — but assuming that proof is adduced, why not toss her overboard then? The right hates her, the left doesn’t really trust her, and there’s a perfectly capable back-up waiting in Steny Hoyer. From what I understand, Hoyer’s well liked in the House; look no further than the fact that the Democrats elected him majority leader over Murtha, Pelosi’s favored candidate. If they’re serious about passing epochal legislation this year like health care, don’t they want someone in charge who’s friendly with Republicans and can woo GOP votes to provide the Dems with a little political cover? To put it another way, what exactly has Pelosi accomplished lately for the left that Hoyer wouldn’t? One day she’s on TV dumping on the CIA, the next day she’s pushing for torture “truth commissions” that’ll blow up in Obama’s face. She’s more of a liability than an asset. Assuming she’s guilty of having endorsed waterboarding back in the day — which, according to Andy McCarthy, by the left’s own logic could amount to a criminal conspiracy — there’s the pretext for Obama and Reid to invite her to the White House for a “talk.” The question is, what if she refused to go when they asked her? What recourse would they have?

Anyway. The true beauty of this fiasco is that it’s only because the left is so absurdly, radically absolutist on this subject that Pelosi’s in any trouble at all. All she’d need from them in order to be free and clear of this mess is an acknowledgment that, yes, it’s perfectly understandable that her top priority in the year after 9/11 was protecting the country from another attack by any means necessary. She meant well but, in her zealousness, took a step that shouldn’t have been taken. If they said that, she could cop to having okayed waterboarding, issue the obligatory “I was blind but now I see” apology, and the uproar would be over. But progressives could never be that rational about this subject, so she’s left to twist in the wind and deny everything in order to flatter their sanctimony. Delightful.

Update: Via Greg Hengler, here’s Lindsey Graham channeling Andy McCarthy on FNC this afternoon. “If it was a crime, she was part of it.”

They should dump her. It would be the best thing for the Democrats.

I do think that they will pressure her to step aside, probably before they get rolling on the more difficult parts of ObamaCare.

If she refuses to go, can’t they force her out through some sort of “no confidence” vote in the House?

What are the rules about holding Speaker elections?

…the left is so absurdly, radically absolutist on this subject…

…progressives could never be that rational about this subject…

I understand how after 8 years of Bush it could seem radical or irrational to support the rule of law, but it really isnt.

Waterboarding has been known to be torture for the entire time of its existence. It has been prosecuted as torture in US courts.

Torture is illegal in the US.

Thus, if someone waterboards, it is illegal.

It doesnt matter if it was “effective” or if “we were all scared after 9/11″. It was illegal.

I don’t see how it’s radical or irrational to have checks on the illegal actions of our governmental leaders.

Dems circle the wagons…and they certainly don’t want to dump a House Speaker. I’ve never considered this a real possibility, unless they decide that ‘torture’ hearings are more important and that she’s too much of a liability to effectively go after Republicans.

Republicans hit the eject button reflexively. But they have to live by different standards…reporting and otherwise. But that’s a different gripe.

Asher on May 14, 2009 at 5:52 PM

I bet they’ll dump her once the RNC rebrands them as socialists. They’ll be quaking in their boots once that happens.

The left wants hearings.
Hearings mean it doesn’t go away.
If it doesn’t go away, then Dems are exposed for having been briefed ad nauseum re torture as well as prewar Iraq intel.
It’s not going away, and it’s definitely damaging and frustrating the left.

If it turns out that she is the one lying, she has to go.

If she is lying, she is trying to undermine our intelligence agency to cover herself.

Great

Pelosi was the ranking Democrat on the House intelligence committee at the time of the 2002 briefing. The current chairman, Silvestre Reyes (D-Texas), acknowledged Thursday that the “committee does not keep any records” about briefings that leaders of the committee and Congress receive.

Reyers and other Democrats currently on the committee told reporters Thursday that the GOP is waging a politically motivated attack on the speaker — and that she has received an unfair ride in the press.

“I tell you who you need to get — that’s Hoekstra, who is running for governor with irresponsible undertakings, and you tell him I said so,” said Rep. Alcee Hastings (D-Fla.), referring to Rep. Pete Hoekstra, the ranking Republican on the committee and a leading Pelosi critic.

Lyimg to a dim is not really a lie if you believe what your saying is what you want it to be. You have to be a compulsive liar to understand that reasoning, so if you are cnnfused, its a good thing. If your not, you’re probably a democrat. If you are dishonest to the core, what is the difference? Which honest or ethical leader do the dims have that would be any better? See what I mean.

WASHINGTON, May 14 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ — Speaker Nancy Pelosi released the following statement on the Supplemental Appropriations Act for Iraq and Afghanistan, which passed the House today by a vote of 368 to 60.

“History will look back at the Iraq war as a tragic miscalculation that cost America far too many lives, far too much money, and distracted us from the real fight against terrorism for far too long. Today, the House begins to close this sad chapter in our history, to end the war in Iraq, and to refocus on the real fight against terrorism in Afghanistan.

“President Obama’s new strategy will require additional sacrifices from our troops, but it recognizes that a successful effort in Afghanistan also demands that we improve training for the Afghan military and police, encourage governance reforms, and fund essential economic development efforts. This legislation provides for these critical needs and ensures that our troops in harm’s way in both Iraq and Afghanistan, and members of our intelligence community, will have all the tools they need to perform their critical missions.

“With this legislation, we honor the brave men and women of our military. Each time they go into battle, they put their trust in our hands as policymakers. We must be equal to the trust they place in us, give them the tools they need, and only send them into harm’s way as a last resort.”

I understand how after 8 years of Bush it could seem radical or irrational to support the rule of law, but it really isnt.

I would love to see a detailed and specific list of the laws that Bush allegedly broke. “Trampling on our Constitutional rights” , “Fighting an unjust war”, and “Might have violated me in my sleep” doesn’t count.

On the other hand Obama may have broken the law by accepting donations from foreign sources for his presidential campaign, and may have broken bankruptcy law by forcing a bankrupt Chrysler to pay union obligations before the bond holders. Not bad for a campaign season and four months in office.

I’d also mention the myriad of campaign promises he’s already broken, but those are hardly law so we’ll just ignore those for now (Good enough for the President, good enough for me).

On the other hand, if what was done at GITMO and other places was in fact against the law, and lawmakers had that knowledge, they become conspirators. Since CIA briefings on this subject to Congress was bipartisan….what’s good for the goose is good for the gander, eh?

She’s a witch! Burn her!

Proof?

Complete sentences are helpful.

But not necessary, if you’re smart enough to get the context.

Johan Klaus on May 14, 2009 at 6:24 PM

They have all the proof they need, in their brainwashed minds.

Oh, my guess is Cheney has a “get out of jail free” card in his pocket, more commonly known as a Presidential Pardon. No need to advertise it until you have to show it.

No one manipulates like rahm and Hussein. She is not placed in there by them and they want their very own in all power slots. They will try to replace her. The House and the Senate are just more departments run by people that should directly report to Obama. If you all haven’t noticed, Rahm is running the administration and the VP and cabinet Posts are merely for show.

Mary in LA on May 14, 2009 at 6:26 PM

Texas…

sven10077 on May 14, 2009 at 6:29 PM

Suppose we do understand… what would you have us do? Stand in a corner and cry?

petunia on May 14, 2009 at 6:24 PM

After years and years of being bested by them here, there and everywhere, what else is there to do?

I’m just saying that there is no sense deluding ourselves into thinking we are going to somehow “catch” Pelosi. She is capable of turning this around and actually getting Cheney arrested. She could even get the Catholic Church to excommunicate some of their bishops if she saw political advantage.

Alaska.

All they can do is demote her. She is from San Francisco. My guess is they are buying everything she is selling.

They won’t put Steny Hoyer in… he’s a white guy… that’s against their morals.

petunia on May 14, 2009 at 6:21 PM

The day she gets demoted to “Backup vice-chairman of the sub-committee on ear wax artistry” will be a sad day: she is precisely the opposite of what anybody who wants to restore this country to glory needs to model themselves upon. Mantra: “If Botox Woman is for it, be against it. If she’s against it, be for it.” It’s a winner. Her greatest contribution to our country would be to be on the front page every day for the next 18 months; the very symbol of liberalism.

I think it takes more than brass or self delusion to make an accomplished liar if the Pelosa Nostra is going to lie in the big leagues she’s going to have to do a better job connecting one string of falsehoods with the next, seamlessly, not the blatant bald face lies for which she’s famous.

But then whats a liberal without media bias?

Caught.
