Why don’t the Democrats dump Pelosi? Update: “If it was a crime, she was part of it”

posted at 5:44 pm on May 14, 2009 by Allahpundit

Not now, I mean — there’ll have to be some hard proof from the CIA first that she is indeed the pathetic liar the whole country suspects her of being — but assuming that proof is adduced, why not toss her overboard then? The right hates her, the left doesn’t really trust her, and there’s a perfectly capable back-up waiting in Steny Hoyer. From what I understand, Hoyer’s well liked in the House; look no further than the fact that the Democrats elected him majority leader over Murtha, Pelosi’s favored candidate. If they’re serious about passing epochal legislation this year like health care, don’t they want someone in charge who’s friendly with Republicans and can woo GOP votes to provide the Dems with a little political cover? To put it another way, what exactly has Pelosi accomplished lately for the left that Hoyer wouldn’t? One day she’s on TV dumping on the CIA, the next day she’s pushing for torture “truth commissions” that’ll blow up in Obama’s face. She’s more of a liability than an asset. Assuming she’s guilty of having endorsed waterboarding back in the day — which, according to Andy McCarthy, by the left’s own logic could amount to a criminal conspiracy — there’s the pretext for Obama and Reid to invite her to the White House for a “talk.” The question is, what if she refused to go when they asked her? What recourse would they have?

Anyway. The true beauty of this fiasco is that it’s only because the left is so absurdly, radically absolutist on this subject that Pelosi’s in any trouble at all. All she’d need from them in order to be free and clear of this mess is an acknowledgment that, yes, it’s perfectly understandable that her top priority in the year after 9/11 was protecting the country from another attack by any means necessary. She meant well but, in her zealousness, took a step that shouldn’t have been taken. If they said that, she could cop to having okayed waterboarding, issue the obligatory “I was blind but now I see” apology, and the uproar would be over. But progressives could never be that rational about this subject, so she’s left to twist in the wind and deny everything in order to flatter their sanctimony. Delightful.

Update: Via Greg Hengler, here’s Lindsey Graham channeling Andy McCarthy on FNC this afternoon. “If it was a crime, she was part of it.”

Jay12, are you saying we should just learn to live under socialism? Not even the Soviets could do that. They put up with it for 60+ years, but I don’t think Americans would be that passive.

I agree with you, Branch Rickey. The Church will bend in the perceptions of others only so far. When it comes to Pelosi and the Church, the only people tolerating her associations with the Church are those who sincerely want to save her soul (so they’re hanging in w/her drivelling).

But she’s been confronted by the Church (her local Bishop w/Vatican approval) and also by Pope Benedict as to her preposterous lies (Pope Benedict’s official statement issued the day after Pelosi “appeared” in Rome contradicts Nancy Pelosi’s preposterous distortions about what occured, as Pelosi stated in HER press release about it, so the Church is doing a good job actually exposing her deceitful nature and statements).

Lourdes on May 14, 2009 at 6:50 PM

And, what with Pelosi cryptically claiming to be “an ardent Catholic,” the Church has exposed why she is not a Catholic in relationship with the Church’s position on theology, despite her “feelings” she’s “ardent”.

sven10077 on May 14, 2009 at 6:53 PM

We’re veering OT, but I will add one thing regarding miseducation in the public schools: Around here in Los Angeles, there’s a booming business in what I would call “adjunct elementary education”: Kumon Math, Mathnasium, and several different tutoring companies. That implies that even rich liberal Westside parents are recognizing that their little darlings are not getting a real education in school, and they are willing to pay for extra instruction outside normal class hours. To me, that suggests an opportunity.

It’s only a relatively few dedicated parents who can and will make the sacrifice of sending their kids to private school or giving up one income to homeschool them, though those numbers are growing. The rest won’t be able to give up sending their kids to public school, even if it’s just to have someplace relatively safe to stash the kid for 8 hours or so while they’re at work.

So I see an opportunity here, particularly for anyone unemployed or underemployed who happens to read Hot Air: Become a tutor. Even an hour or two a week exposed to someone who can think logically might make a huge difference to a kid’s outlook on life.

[Disclaimer: I have no children, though I wish I did. :-( By the time my current job is up in September, I hope to be employed at least part-time with a tutoring company.]

Graham is too weak.

Pelosi needs to pay for her actions.

She, Harry Reid and countless other Democrats willingly stabbed our country, troops, and President in the back during a time of war. I could forgive that on domestic issues, but they stood with the country when we went to war – then they turned on it the first chance they got.

They intentionally leaked sensitive information, documents, and photos regarding the war thru their various channels in the media, CIA, and elsewhere.

This ‘let’s look forward’ s#!t when the Democrats would never do the same is sickening.

Why do Republicans have their careers ruined because they sent a strange e-mail that mentioned underwear to a page or took a wide stance in a public restroom?

Why should Pelosi be allowed to willingly lie and smear our country, troops, and President during a time of war with false statements and accusations and not have to pay for it?

She needs to fess up and admit what we all know. She knew, and didn’t object (and neither would 80+% of the rest of the country before it was turned into a political hot button). Then she used the issue for political purposes and she needs to apologize for that.

BTW – I noticed Congress just approved almost $100 B in war funding – and not a single threat to withhold the funding.

Gee… you mean they used the war itself for political purposes and put our troops and country in danger?

Democrats need to be held accountable for their actions during Bush’s Presidency. Pelosi would be a start.

I could care less if their strategy worked – they sold out the country during a war and we should not let them forget about it.

Mr Purple on May 15, 2009 at 4:15 AM

I also find it amusing that it was Jane Harmann who wrote the letter expressing concern, yet when Pelosi became Speaker she tried to bull rush impeached judge Alcee Hastings into the Intel Chair over Harmann.

You would think that by writing that letter Pelosi and Harmann might have had a Sisterhood of the Waterboarding Letter thing going on.

Pelosi and Harmann aren’t exactly gal-pals, apparently. That could be part of the reason she didn’t sign Harmann’s letter.

Mr Purple on May 15, 2009 at 4:32 AM

Right now, after viewing clips, reading, listening, I can only come to one conclusion for myself, that makes any sense.

Ms.Pelosi is riding the high Obama enjoys right now. Obama can say, and do, whatever he feels at the moment, and get away with it, without having to hold any responsibility for it. Like the photo op debacle. A man resigned his position for it, but no one else was held accountable? No one else knew about it? No one else had to help authorize it? Give me a small break. This man went down alone, while others complicit in it, stay, to relish the Obama glow.

Ms.Pelosi, being part of the statist crowd, feels she holds the same power, and has the same protective shield, that Obama enjoys. I think at this point, she’s confused, as to why the press came at her the way they did, and she’s confused as to why she’s not being given the same courtesy, respect, and protection, Obama gets.
