Video: Pelosi goes nuclear on CIA over torture as Cheney’s memo request is denied

posted at 1:32 pm on May 14, 2009 by Allahpundit

A follow-up to Ed’s post, just because your enjoyment of this story won’t be complete without witnessing her comically palpable discomfort for yourself. What better way for The One to smooth things over with the intel honchos on which his counterterror strategy depends than by having the Democratic Speaker of the House call them a bunch of serial liars on national television?

CNN has the Cliff’s Notes version of the vid but I’m giving it to you uncut so you can watch the most shameful part, which runs here from about 5:30 to 9:30. To refresh your memory of the timeline, there’s no dispute that she knew waterboarding was going on by February 2003, when one of her staffers went to a briefing on it and relayed the details to her. The question is simply whether she found out even earlier than that, in September 2002, after the CIA had started waterboarding Abu Zubaydah. Why does the timing matter? Um, it doesn’t: Even if it’s true that the CIA told her in 2002 that they were only thinking of using the technique, the very thought of it should have ignited her righteous progressive outrage. Instead, her defense here — I kid you not — is that by the time she learned they were waterboarding people in 2003, Jane Harman had become the ranking member on the intelligence committee and so, you know, it wasn’t Nan’s job anymore to speak up. Besides, she was too focused at the time on the big Democratic electoral turnaround … which wouldn’t happen for another three years. Make sure you watch at least to the part where she insists she doesn’t think she should have done more to stop the program. There’s that old activist liberal spirit! As Andy Levy says, “Nancy Pelosi’s lies are so transparent birds are slamming into them.”

Meanwhile, as this soap opera’s playing out, Dick Cheney’s request to declassify the two CIA memos which he claims prove that torture works has been denied. Surprise. Exit quotation: “President Obama has the legal authority to declassify the documents ‘with the wave of his hand,’ according to one expert.”

Update: I want to highlight this bit from Ed’s post because it really is the million-dollar question:

And if the CIA really had lied to her in the briefings, why didn’t Pelosi start out with that explanation? In fact, why didn’t she mention that in 2005 when both the EITs and the briefings were made public? Coming four years later, this explanation lacks any kind of credibility.

The killer quote from today’s presser is “they mislead us all the time,” a reference to the CIA’s bad intel on Iraq’s WMD. If there really is a pattern of deception going on, why would she wait until there’s a Democrat in the White House to complain when she could have pinned the whole thing on Bush by screaming about it earlier?

I’m wondering if her staff even tried to get her to do this via a written statement. She should never, i mean NEVER, get in front of actual reporters. How could they watch her past performances and think she could articulate a plausible explanation to an obvious lie. It’s sad to say but, as a conservative, I hope she survives because she is the best living, breathing example of liberalism in America.

MajorKong on May 14, 2009 at 6:14 PM

She must be in total shock they actually asked her real questions and pressed her. She’s not used to being treated this way and it showed in her unglued performance.

Would someone please ask her who EXACTLY did the Bush/CIA Admin “mislead” her about Iraq/Saddam’s WMD’s

That’ll be a hoot!

Without their press, their CBS, NBC, CNN, ABC,,, these people are nothing. The press is their shield and their defender. Their voice.
When the press turns ever so little, how they cower and shrink and fidget.
I have a hard time believing the press wants any of this either. This distracts from the message. The message is, Republicans are evil and Democrats are good. I just find it hard to believe the press will allow this to continue. I think something new will come around and this will all just go away. Maybe another ethics complaint against Palin.

There is no common ground with Pelosi, The One, Reid, etc. Fight them at every turn. They represent the enemy of America’s security and prosperity.

chipandcharge on May 14, 2009 at 6:56 PM

Again the narrative of the left fails. Bush was an incompetant bungler but at the same time he was some evil mastermind fooling congressional dems at every turn. It can’t be both.

I smell an “O’Reilly Body Language” segment coming down all over that video.

I’m not an expert – but even I can tell she’s lying her arse off. I mean – she is really lousy at doing it too – it’s so obvious.

Think this might be the end of the speaker here.

Perhaps even abominable than all of Pelosi’s lying is the fact that she is so terrible at it. It’s embarrassing. Now Bill Clinton, he was damn good at it.

If, even after all her self inflicted wounds, showing herself to be both a serial and pathological liar and an incredibly inept one at that, Republicans in Congress can not take down Queen “Milhous” Pelosi, if they can’t even do that, then I will fear that there may be no hope for them and it will be time to start a third party.

It would be refreshing to see Nancy Pelosi stop her lying and admit to the truth for a change.

It would be refreshing to see Nancy Pelosi do her own thinking for a change, instead of having people like George Soros do it for her.

It would be refreshing to see Nancy Pelosi stop taking her daily marching orders from moonbat tinhat loon outfits like moveon.org, DailyKos, Huffington Post, and Media Matters.

chipandcharge on May 14, 2009 at 8:15 PM

They’re throwing Pelosi under the bus, and that will help obama & other dems avoid any criticism about how he/ they used this issue as a political football to turn the electorate against republicans, when the dems were obviously complicit in it. If a majority of the voting public were actually sentient beings, the dems would be in serious trouble, because at this point it’s abundantly clear to even “teh stupid” that it’s all just been a ploy to gain poilitical power for the dems, and not about national security or civil rights.

She’s been mentally unstable for a long time, but it really seems to be coming to a head. Perhaps the fact that she may be wandering into federal felony territory here has something to do it. Or maybe it’s a degenerative condition. But not even speaking as a partisan anymore, you simply can’t have a person bordering on psychosis serving as Speaker of the House. I don’t see how the Socialists can possibly not remove her.

Certainly. But note that the telegraph newspapar article, which the blognewser you’ve linked has as the primary source (click his text “gruesome interrogation tactics”), states that he was also held by the Pakistanis, the Afghanis, and finally the Moroccans before being transferred to American custody, so what is being described probably did not occur while in American custody. My guess is the Moroccans, who have suffered even more horribly than us at the hands of Al Qaeda, in a sort of civil war which is still ongoing. We will find out in the end, though, won’t we?

The judges said the Bush administration “had threatened to withhold intelligence cooperation with Britain if the information were made public.”

It is the Obama administration that is threatening the Brits if they release this information:

(via Hot Air/ED)

Obama threatens to limit U.S. intel with Brits

Eli Lake (Contact)
http://washingtontimes.com/news/2009/may/12/obama-threatens-to-limit-us-intel-with-brits/print/

The Obama administration says it may curtail Anglo-American intelligence sharing if the British High Court discloses new details of the treatment of a former Guantanamo detainee.

A court filing from the British Foreign Office released recently includes a letter from the U.S. government, identified as the “Obama administration’s communication.” Other information identifying the U.S. agency and author of the letter appears to have been redacted.

So if you are so upset about how this is being handled, look no further than the liberal hero Obama who supports:

Military Tribunals

Rendition

Enhanced Interrogation (Torture in liberal land)

Indefinite detention

And refuses to honor his promise of transparency and full disclosure by blocking the release of “all” the CIA enhanced interrogation memos(releasing only the ones that help him politically, even going so far as to edit out information in them that does not fit the liberal narrative).

Why do democrats support torture than rail against it in public?

Would not be for political reason of course.

pgrossjr on May 14, 2009 at 9:11 PM

The answer to your question (closing statement, your post here) is that she was certainly manipulating voters for her and her Democratic Partiers’ purposes: not raising this issue as they went about — as Democrats do time in, time out — manipulating issues to garner votes.

Pelosi “played” as did and does Biden, Keene, Obama, Kerry, etc., PLAYED or “performed” ROLES in their political offices TO GAIN POLITICAL LEVERAGE, because her/their goal was to gain the Presidency, gain a Democratic majority in Congress and to just do whatever was necessary, including lying, cheating, stealing, anything, toward those goals.

“The end justifies the means” is the communist, Karl Marx perspective that today’s Democrats deploy.

It’s really no surprise that Pelosi played a sick game of pretending to support President Bush and our national security while she was busy going about not supporting either.

She’s a corrupt individual devoid of morality and ethics and I also say the same about nearly all Democrats I’ve ever heard from and followed over time: their political machinations are self-serving devoid of consistent ethics, minds and information are manipulated inorder to coil up like the venom-eeking snakes they are, lying in wait to strike.

WisCon on May 14, 2009 at 1:53 PM

Well, actually, I thought their end began with “clinging to their guns and their Bibles” slur by Obama about Americans (about “White people” Americans at that) and then the “teabagging” slurs by the Leftwing media were just the braying headline that the Democrats were doomed. Pelosi is the candles burning down into the icing.

Lourdes on May 14, 2009 at 9:55 PM

I think if handled right, this is a gift from heaven.

On a few smaller points,

Democrats are real good a rallying around their own even when they are guilty.

Pelosi was getting this kind of support,I don’t think she will be now.She has gone so far out on a limb to cover her lies that anyone who stands with her, could find themselves caught up in it themselves.

Pelosi has found a way to make stupid even stupider(is that a word?) by escalating the war with the CIA.

They went after Bush and he went no where near calling them out as liars.Bush simply stated he based his decisions on the intel he was provided (like all Presidents do).The intel was wrong and every investigation has cleared Bush of the bogus “Bush lied”,”Bush mislead us” bullsh!t coming from the libs.

What I would like to see is this latest liberal sham of faux outrage, selective amnesia, feigned ignorance of what is going on around them, and accusations of being lied to and mislead tactics being tied to the democrats as a whole in pulling the same stunt concerning the war in Iraq.

This is the same MO that we saw perpetrated by the democrats and pushed by their activist friends in the press
when the Iraq war started dropping in the polls and the democrats had to find a way to repair their image with their base and the public by shouting “Bush lied”,”Big ol’dumb Bush tricked all of us super smart democrats”.

The democrats spent years before Bush was President and up until after they voted to go into Iraq saying Saddam was a threat, had WMD’s,ties to al-qaeda,and was pursuing Nuclear weapons.

With the help of the press, democrats yelled these false allegations for years until they finally started to stick.

The press ignored the findings of 2004,2008,Senate Intelligence reports along with the Butler report and Duelfer report that found Bush innocent of the bogus accusations.

Now Pelosi wants to use the same methods and is hoping the press, liberal base, and her democratic allies will help her the same way they helped each other in propagandizing the Iraq war.

Republicans need to slam pelosi mercilessly on her lies and
show the Nation this is the same tactics they used in their
bogus War on Bush that was throughly debunked.

The dems are getting burned bad on this issue, have pissed off the CIA,and are going to want no part of going into pre-war intel battles that will expose their rabid support of the Iraq war and years of claims concerning Saddam’s WMD’s/ties to al-qaeda that the press has helped this Nation forget.

This is a golden opportunity to expose the democrats for their shameless politicizing of the Iraq war,National Security, and stabbing our troops in the back for political
gain.

Republicans on the Hill need to grow some Cheney balls in a hurry and expose these corrupt lying liberals and their narcissistic ways.

The truth is that NOBODY cared about waterboarding in 2002, 2003. The memory of 9/11 was still fresh in everybody’s mind and we wanted the government to do whatever it took to prevent another attack. That’s why nobody objected to waterboarding at the time. It was only later that the Dems realized that they could use waterboarding as red meat to their base and bring down Bush.

almost 5,000 American troops have died, more Americans than died on 9/11. Of course, they are the type of Americans for whom Cheney hasn’t much use as he declared rather dramatically when he achieved no less than five draft deferments during the Vietnam War.

Let’s just say that five minutes of the Sith Lord was stunningly inaccurate.

When will someone of stature tell Dick Cheney that enough is enough? Go home. Spend your 70 million. Luxuriate in your Eastern Shore mansion. Shoot quail with your friends–and your friends.

The well respected Republicans I know and listen to don’t sound like keith olberman.

Using the deaths of our troops for political partisan hits
shows this guy to be an idiot.

When he can produce his plan that shows how we could have fought back against the jihadist without US casualties then
I might start paying attention to him.

His diatribe is stock full of liberal talking points and pathetic attempts to diminish the success this country has had in the War on Terror.

Dick Cheney is doing something Bush should have done years ago, fight back against the liberal lies and propaganda.

It has put the democrats on the serious defensive and now the House leader is caught up in a bevy of lies.

A lot more than Mr. State Dept. has done.

On a side note,I wonder if John Kerry’s attempt at deferments,Joe Biden’s deferments,Bill Clinton’s lack of military service and Obama’s lack of military service but still sending men and women off to war is a problem.
It’s not mentioned in the article.
I guess Maddow would have cut his mike or something.

If she had told the truth right off the bat, there wouldn’t be an issue, but no, this mentally deficient ignoramous had to keep on digging. I say let her. Bring the “truth commission” and put her on the stand.

As for Cheney, well when respected Republicans begin organizing against him and telling the truth.. hmm.. he’s done too. Good.

Stand back and watch the dominoes fall.

popularpeoplesfront on May 14, 2009 at 10:30 PM

Ha, RINOs attack. The only “respected Republicans” from your point of view are the Leftwingers infiltrating the GOP, which is WHY the Left always rallies around RINOs.

Cheney’s not going to be impaled, just forget that Leftwing Faerey Tale.

Well, in all due respect, Cheney’s, uhh, set are doing just fine.

Lourdes on May 14, 2009 at 9:58 PM

They are, that’s why we need Republicans on the hill to follow suit.

Cheney has called the liberals bluff and they are fumbling around like a bunch of Clowns trying to deflect how much they supported the same policies that they now condemn.

He put them on the spot about releasing the memos that show the success of the EIT’s and now Obama looks like a fool running around talking about “Transparency, full disclosure, and accountability” while he himself suppress the truth and withholds information by denying to release memos related to memos he has already released.

Now these idiots have a full blown war with the CIA.

democrats are fully stuck on stupid.

Baxter Greene on May 14, 2009 at 10:31 PM

Yeah, I realize your important point, made earlier (Republicans need to “grow a pair” and not rely on Cheney’s, so to speak).

I agree with that. Cheney’s a unique man, in a unique position and I am exceptionally glad he’s speaking out as he is now — it was the one area in the former Administration wherein many problems festered, that there was poor communication or loss of contact with we the people, allowed many Leftwing horror gossips to flourish. So Cheney now speaking out as he is is exceptionally commendable, in my view, contrary to what the Left and other RINOs in the GOP are shedding tears over (“Cheney needs to stop talking!” is what they’re saying, because he confronts their propaganda).

But, you’re right, more Republicans need to be as brave and outspoken as Cheney is and stop being shouted down and too quick to go mushy on their positions.

Lourdes on May 14, 2009 at 11:35 PM

Baxter Greene on May 14, 2009 at 10:31 PM

I thought Obama’s pompous speech before the CIA a recent while ago, complete with him being acknowledged by, and acknowledging, his “amen corner,” was awful. The clapping and enthusiasm was all from one concerted area and I wondered if they had to incentivize many of the others or require them to show up.

I don’t know, can’t say, but these are my impressions: the Left has stacked Intelligence for a long, long time now to work against the nation and toward “a more perfect Socialist cultland” though I realize they’d never use those words/phrases. The Plame thing emphasized how fringe some interests are as embedded in intelligence.

Oh, and Powell was involved in that, too, so throw him out with the Pelosi water.

I think EVERY-B-O-D-Y with any sense recognizes this as an Obama effor to “step aside” and remain “moderately clean”.

I doubt, though, that everybody who does is going to allow that to happen. Obama is carrying a lot of dirt for someone so early on in any Administration and, in fact, started out with a huge load of it, even before his oath.

I say let them tussel and disloyal one another and watch them all end up with more dirt than they can easily wash off by way of Olbermann and Hollywood.

“She’s away from Intel now, she’s not focused on it, it’s not her priority,” Rep. C.A. Ruppersberger (D-Md.) said of Pelosi in 2003. “We have all these committees we go to, we get briefed on hundreds and hundreds of things. The specialist, though, was the chairman, or the ranking at the time, Jane Harman. And she did what she had to do, and we couldn’t get a response back.”

This guy wasn’t even in Congress in 2001. What a coward! He wasn’t even there, but says that if he had been there, he would have blamed it on a woman. Not very brave, coming from this courageous former states’ attorney:

With luck and the dedication of doctors at the University of Maryland’s renowned Shock Trauma center, he survived. After recovering the young investigative prosecutor decided to run for public office to help others and to repay Shock Trauma for saving his life.

What a cowardly ass. She’s going down, and you with her.

Bill Sammon on O’Reilly tonight nailed it. He said that the whole torture issue was supposed to be a winner for the Democrats and hurt the Republicans, but now it’s turned into a issue that is hurting Dems and helping Republicans. All I can say is: Cheney, you magnificent bastard.

On a related point, O’Reilly was really getting on my nerves tonight when he kept insisting that Obama should be commended for doing the right thing by not releasing the prisoner abuse photos. I think it is the right thing to do, but Obama’s initial instinct was to release the photos. He only changed his mind when the political pressure became too much for him. Any decent person would have only had to think about it for about 5 seconds to get it right. What took him so long and why did he get it so wrong at first before he flip-flopped?

I agree with what you are saying, there are a lot of liberal activists in the CIA and intelligence all together.

The NIE on Iran that came out while Bush was trying to strengthen sanctions and use force as a way of implementing them was a good example of pure activism.
The NIE was widely touted by the left as proof of Bush’s war mongering and then within months was deemed as worthless bullsh!t by the very same intelligence agencies once the damage was done.

But I also believe that the CIA is a diverse, rangy bunch that don’t take any sh!t from the poser’s on capital hill.
They stated early on they were not happy with Obama and his pick for the head job Panetta:

Comment: CIA Insiders Issue Political Threats Against Obama, Panetta

http://intelligencenews.wordpress.com/2009/01/08/02-32/

In one such case, a “former intelligence official” speaking to The Washington Post reminded Obama and Panetta that “many of the people Panetta will be expected to lead [at the CIA] would have participated in implementing [torture-based] interrogation polic[ies]“. Another “former senior official” warned Obama and Panetta to “think twice about pledges they make now [about the handling of terrorism detainees] because they may come back to haunt them in the future if some dire circumstances occur

”.

I really believe that Obama has really made a mistake with this BDS/Torture witch hunt.
Pelosi on the other hand has thrown some serious fuel on this fire.
I cannot recall a prominent politician basically calling the CIA liars on the national stage like this.
I think the democrats are so drunk with power and believe all the sloppy worshiping they are getting from the press that it has made them blind and stupid to the idiotic moves they are making.

I am a strong Bush supporter, but this along with immigration,Harriot Myers, and spending were areas that he pissed me off.

If he had taken Cheney’s approach and attacked the liberal propaganda head on,a lot of the erosion to the Republican party would have been averted.

The press is bias and culpable in many ways, but Bush had the bully pulpit and should have hammered liberals on their lies and hypocrisy.

Yes, agreed. I have faith, was merely pointing out the reality that the Intelligence “community” is far more Liberal with Leftwing components than many realize. So you KNOW that Pelosi is in outer space by now. And I believe Obama is, too though he certainly is enjoying a great deal of special handling that remains unexplained and is not at all deserved. I sense Kerry’s communist plans at work, as also Kennedy’s and Pelosi’s, etc.

It takes a lot of hubris to start a war with the CIA,raise taxes during a recession, and gut the economy in your first hundred days.

How about her explaining what the definition of “knew” is?

csdeven on May 15, 2009 at 2:01 AM

I am glad this is happening. Nancy isn’t going to let this go and neither is the CIA.

Criminal charges have been made against the CIA.

And Nancy by her own admissions is as guilty as anyone else if this was torture…

This has to come to a head. Someone has to win and someone has to lose. Revenge is in the air.

Nancy has not risen to her place in the corrupt Democratic Party without leaving some skeletons and probably some enemies. She is a ruthless thug. She will fight dirty. And her legions of Bush haters will back her all the way.

But the press will continue to protect Obama. That would be the real prize to catch Obama trying to cover her tracks or something… but Obama isn’t likely to protect anyone unless it really benefits him. And the press will try to leave him the victim… It may even give him cover for his coming failure.

Anyone who takes on the CIA is really stupid. It’s their job to know stuff. My guess is they have allies in the FBI and the Secret Service who know stuff. If Nancy has skeletons they are likely to show up in the Inquirer at very least.

And this could really turn out well for the country. This “distraction” really does have to potential to slow Obama down until the American people get over the trance and realize what a power hungry madman he truly is.

This won’t only be interesting to watch and dissect each and every move… but it could be good for the country too! And waste Obama’s precious time…

I’m glad Nancy lied.
