Video: Pelosi goes nuclear on CIA over torture as Cheney’s memo request is denied
posted at 1:32 pm on May 14, 2009 by Allahpundit
A follow-up to Ed’s post, just because your enjoyment of this story won’t be complete without witnessing her comically palpable discomfort for yourself. What better way for The One to smooth things over with the intel honchos on which his counterterror strategy depends than by having the Democratic Speaker of the House call them a bunch of serial liars on national television?
CNN has the Cliff’s Notes version of the vid but I’m giving it to you uncut so you can watch the most shameful part, which runs here from about 5:30 to 9:30. To refresh your memory of the timeline, there’s no dispute that she knew waterboarding was going on by February 2003, when one of her staffers went to a briefing on it and relayed the details to her. The question is simply whether she found out even earlier than that, in September 2002, after the CIA had started waterboarding Abu Zubaydah. Why does the timing matter? Um, it doesn’t: Even if it’s true that the CIA told her in 2002 that they were only thinking of using the technique, the very thought of it should have ignited her righteous progressive outrage. Instead, her defense here — I kid you not — is that by the time she learned they were waterboarding people in 2003, Jane Harman had become the ranking member on the intelligence committee and so, you know, it wasn’t Nan’s job anymore to speak up. Besides, she was too focused at the time on the big Democratic electoral turnaround … which wouldn’t happen for another three years. Make sure you watch at least to the part where she insists she doesn’t think she should have done more to stop the program. There’s that old activist liberal spirit! As Andy Levy says, “Nancy Pelosi’s lies are so transparent birds are slamming into them.”
Meanwhile, as this soap opera’s playing out, Dick Cheney’s request to declassify the two CIA memos which he claims prove that torture works has been denied. Surprise. Exit quotation: “President Obama has the legal authority to declassify the documents ‘with the wave of his hand,’ according to one expert.”
Update: I want to highlight this bit from Ed’s post because it really is the million-dollar question:
And if the CIA really had lied to her in the briefings, why didn’t Pelosi start out with that explanation? In fact, why didn’t she mention that in 2005 when both the EITs and the briefings were made public? Coming four years later, this explanation lacks any kind of credibility.
The killer quote from today’s presser is “they mislead us all the time,” a reference to the CIA’s bad intel on Iraq’s WMD. If there really is a pattern of deception going on, why would she wait until there’s a Democrat in the White House to complain when she could have pinned the whole thing on Bush by screaming about it earlier?

They have already been holding hearings this past week about “torture.” They dragged in some ex FBI guy who said water boarding doesn’t work, and Cheney shredded documents saying so. The key here is ex. Wonder why that is. Also testified behind a curtain. Didn’t hear about anyone testifying about how water boarding did work though. Such a surprise seeing as the whole thing is being run by the Democrats. That’s the problem with any “truth” commission that they would hold. The deck will be stacked.

Not so sure. It could be a very shrewed move by teh One to eliminate a threat to his leadership of the donkeys. He’s moderately clean on the issue. Raise it under the auspices of Get Bush, and the frankenstein trashes Pelosi et al.

I hope you folks all realize that this whole Pelosi-CIA-Cheney episode is being fueled by Obama and the Democratic leadership, (with the blessing of the MSM), to take the heat off this nation’s sinking fiscal ship. When the fire gets just “hot enough”, these morons will run their health-care, energy, and education policies right thur Congress to the tune of another NINE TRILLION OF DEBT. Smoke and mirrors.
How’s that pandora’s box you’ve opened working now Mr. Obama? The TOTUS repairman will be workin’ overtime.

Reayy, Nan?
Well, maybe they really didn’t waterboard anyone at all, or even interrogate anyone, ever. They just made up all of that crap too just to sound like tough guy spies.
Hell, maybe the folks you claim mislead you all of the time aren’t really intelligence agents, but stand-ins from “24″.
Or, maybe you’re full of it and have now realized you lured the bad dog into the cage, but stupidly forgot to lock the door.

It wouldn’t be inaccurate to assume that I couldn’t exactly not say that it is or isn’t almost partially incorrect.
On the contrary. I’m possibly more or less not definitely rejecting the idea that in no way with any amount of uncertainty that I undeniably …do or do not know where he shouldn’t probably be, if that indeed wasn’t where he isn’t. Even if he wasn’t at where I knew he was
That’d mean I’d really have to know where he wasn’t.

This from the woman that says that the Tea Parties were funded by the biggest Republican donors as an astro-turfing initiative.
She is a lying sack of crap and needs to be investigated and removed from office.
Then again, I’m confident she was AT the briefing and was TOLD about water boarding. But I don’t think she was listening. She is more concerned about the power and about talking, not listening.
What a complete waste.

Let’s stop fussing about Nancy and what she knew whenever. This woman is so devoted to BHO she is throwing herself on the coals just to distract us. While the focus is on her, we’re distracted from the “agenda” that keeps moving forward in Congress: nationalized healthcare, taxing soda, Cap and Trade, one socialist thing after another. Expanding government, more intrusion, restricting our freedoms at every turn, squashing our right to dissent, etc. The citizens will have to pay for all of these programs and increased redistribution.
So, when the announcement is made to drop all the investigating of the attorneys and the CIA interrogators, people will forget all about Nancy’s lies today. Meanwhile, the “agenda” will just keep moving forward. It will happen; then, we will look back and say, “how did that go through with so little resistance?”
Think about it. All these BIG STORIES that have had the MSM preoccupied for so long. AIG bonuses (yes, they were despicable, but it was already done), Air Force One buzzing Manhattan, releasing the CIA photos, now not, Big Three Auto bailouts, firing GM’s CEO, bank bailouts, ultimate gov’t control, do this, do that, no you can’t do that, okay, you can do this. The media are going nuts, jumping from one story to another. If there’s a lull, just send Joe Biden out in public to make another gaffe. When that doesn’t work, let Nancy be the sacrificial lamb for a few days.
Holler about Limbaugh, holler about Cheney, holler about anything that the media will grab on to and forget all about the socialization of the USA.
It’s a brilliant tactic; and, we’re all being snowed.

Poor SanFranNan doesn’t understand that when the Congress made the lovely Director of National Intelligence, that going after the CIA got you the ENTIRE IC… please, lets have that lovely ‘truth commission’ and learn of how often you were briefed, the topics and when, most importantly, you decided not to attend… then a little bit of checking on your records, Nannie, will find out which contributors were more important than your job. Miss a briefing to meet with a big time contributor? Whatever did happen to that Oath of Office, Nan?
Going after the CIA is dumb.
Going after the IC which you helped to stand up as a coordinated system under the DNI?
Everyone from SpecOps to NGA to ONI to CIA and every analyst in civilian and military realms, including Fort Huachuca?
Mmmmm… smells like toast…
Start up the lovely political ‘truth commission’ and see your beloved stature and every, single, lying one of you go down, Nan. And the President could do bupkis to stop it: you’ve gone above his paygrade. Especially the military folks, they got some real beefs with this sort of thing of playing politics with their lives.

As a former CIA officer I am appalled at Pelosi’s accusations. I retired in 1979 so you can tell I am an older person than most on HotAir. During the Carter administration many of us were forced to spend more time answering questions presented by congressional “weenies” (who had offices at HQ) than we did working on the projects we were assigned. We were continually required justify ongoing programs to these 25 to 35 year old geniuses, most of whom had no real experience in intel work. When it looked like the nation faced four more years of the incompetent Carter regime, I took early retirement.
I suspect that there will be many current CIA officers who will follow the same route as I did. Honorable hard working people do not wish to be treated as Carter and Obama treat their people.

Great prediction from William Jacobson, via Michelle Malkin:
Here’s my prediction of what will happen if Democrats push the investigation to the bitter end causing damage to national security, a political death match with the CIA, and Democrat-on-Democrat finger pointing:
Steny Hoyer, Speaker; Jane Harman, Majority Leader; Nancy Pelosi, Chair of the House sub-committee on fresh water fisheries; Republicans, unexpected gains in 2010 mid-term elections.
The Democrats wished hard for an investigation into waterboarding and other interrogation methods. They may have wished too hard, because they are about to get what they wished for, with no way out.
