Quotes of the day

posted at 10:37 pm on May 14, 2009 by Allahpundit

President Barack Obama, calling current deficit spending “unsustainable,” warned of skyrocketing interest rates for consumers if the U.S. continues to finance government by borrowing from other countries.

“We can’t keep on just borrowing from China,” Obama said at a town-hall meeting in Rio Rancho, New Mexico, outside Albuquerque. “We have to pay interest on that debt, and that means we are mortgaging our children’s future with more and more debt.”

Holders of U.S. debt will eventually “get tired” of buying it, causing interest rates on everything from auto loans to home mortgages to increase, Obama said. “It will have a dampening effect on our economy.”

***
The Troubled Assets Relief Program, which has not yet been used for its supposed purpose (to purchase such assets from banks), has been the instrument of the administration’s adventure in the automobile industry. TARP’s $700 billion, like much of the supposed “stimulus” money, is a slush fund the executive branch can use as it pleases. This is as lawless as it would be for Congress to say to the IRS: We need $3.5 trillion to run the government next year, so raise it however you wish — from whomever, at whatever rates you think suitable. Don’t bother us with details…

The Obama administration’s agenda of maximizing dependency involves political favoritism cloaked in the raiment of “economic planning” and “social justice” that somehow produce results superior to what markets produce when freedom allows merit to manifest itself, and incompetence to fail. The administration’s central activity — the political allocation of wealth and opportunity — is not merely susceptible to corruption, it is corruption.

Is he actually capable of putting two and two together and arriving at the proper sum?

Obama is responsible for the largest ever increase in deficit spending in US history, and now it dawns on him that deficit spending, especially on the grand scale he has pushed through, is somehow bad fiscal policy?

Did he get a new teleprompter today or something?

So we need to impoverish America to make Obama a success ?

For the democrats equality means every American must be equally miserable.

There is no failure but it is balanced out with the notion that there is no such thing as success.

rockmom on May 14, 2009 at 10:43 PM

I think you are right here. Obama is justifying massive tax increases and dropping his “tax cuts” because “The deficit is too big” and that he has no choice but to have high taxes to avoid borrowing.

All the while hiding the fact that cutting spending is another viable option that he doesnt want to do.

The first quote is from a column with this quote from Obama:

“Most of what is driving us into debt is health care, so we have to drive down costs,” he said.

That’s the reason he said that laughable nonsense (coming from him) about current deficit spending. He’s using the statement to frame health care. It has nothing to do with caring about debt.

We are already seeing failure of the socialist agenda. Almost across the board states are having massive shortfalls in their revenues. So what do the dems do ? They do the tax it till it is extinct policy that kills jobs and then reduces revenues even more.

Its the vicious killer cycle that ultimately defeats socialism UNLESS it is force by the barrel of the gun.

William Amos on May 14, 2009 at 10:51 PM

It’s clever, actually. Obama’s covering all bases. He knows perfectly well that the spit will hit the fan, with a crippled economy and soaring interest rates. Instead of taking blame, he’ll say “see, I told you so!” and continue blaming Bush.

The media will provide ample cover.

We are already seeing failure of the socialist agenda.

William Amos on May 14, 2009 at 10:51 PM

You missed the point, Billy. The socialist agenda is to kill the competition, namely capitalism. To do this, they must kill our capitalist economy. Then and only then can they find justification to replace it with pure socialism, using the failure as proof that capitalism is inferior to socialism, and the desperation of the people will sweep the changes in…or so the Obama team thinks.

Instead, they will be tarred and feathered out of office, and we will spend decades repairing the damage. But as an American, I see this as an opportunity for all (many?) of us to excel.

Yeah, I’m an optimist.

stonemeister on May 14, 2009 at 10:56 PM

You know he made a big show out of ordering a “daily economic briefing.” I’ll bet he is losing his lunch daily when he sees the revenues tanking and the Treasury auctions going about as well as a trip on the Titanic.

It’s really, REALLY a lot worse than he is telling anyone. “Unsustainable” is almost like calling it a “banana” in comparison. The correct word would be something like “ohmygodthechineseareabouttoforecloseonamerica.”

I may be alone in this, but I see a link between the Pelosi implosion and this curious quote from Obama.

Who wrote Porkulous and Son Of Porkulous? Pelosi.

Who is in deep kimchee? Pelosi.

Who is getting reports that we’re still shedding jobs at a fast rate, that interest rates are spiking, that bonds aren’t selling, etc. etc. ? Obama.

So. If this destroys (or sufficiently damages) Pelosi, Obama can, by executive order, strip out some of the more egregious abuses and some of the pork going to Pelosi and her allies, and say he’s “cutting the fat”.

Blue-on-blue, with Obama using it to look more centrist, even though we know it’s total crap.

The chump-in-chief has figured himself out.

He doesn’t have a clue what to do.

Barry the Childish is shoveling everthing onto the power grab and government expansion table (Health Care, Carbon Tax, Gitmo closing, ad absurdum) instead of simply trying to stimulate jobs growth ~by aiming stimulus money at amazingly fertile emerging technolgies… like Penn State scientists who discovered a bacteria that eats garbage and excrete hydrogen for fuel cells, or fast charging batteries, or the many other equally rich avenues opening for nanotech… that need minimal cash infusions [millions, not billions] to spur a booming new industrial breakout for American companies and employment.

We need honest job growth, based on sustainable tech, not vapid, metastasizing fantasies about providing everything else to everyone in order to pander to his voting blocs.

He who tries too much tends to fail at all of them.

If this tyro doofus would keep focused on employment, we might get the rest of the economy stabilized and re-inspired and moving back from the brink and out of the red.

But Obama is more interested in old party hack crap.

Which will prove his undoing.

No need to strive for greatness.

Kini on May 14, 2009 at 11:07 PM

We have already achieved the maximum greatness possible for our country: Obama.

Who could ask for anything more?

“It’s time for reform that’s built on transparency, accountability, and mutual responsibility, values fundamental to the new foundation we seek to build for our economy,” the president said.

Ok for credit card companies; for TOTUS, it’s above his paygrade…….

Most Historical Hysterical President evah.

“We can’t keep on just borrowing from China,” Obama said at a town-hall meeting in Rio Rancho, New Mexico, outside Albuquerque. “We have to pay interest on that debt, and that means we are mortgaging our children’s future with more and more debt.”

Is Obama in Bizzaro world or what.
Does the press have it’s lips pressed so firmly to this guy’s a$$ that he can spend more money than all the previous Presidents combined, quadruple the deficit and then make these blatantly bizarre assertions as if he has nothing to do with it.

Obama is do full of it,he makes Pelosi look credible.

Don’t tempt the liberals, Lox.

blatantblue on May 14, 2009 at 11:49 PM

I don’t know what all you guys are whining about. It’s all been money well spent.

Antoniette Santopadre of Valley Stream was expecting a $250 stimulus check. But when her son finally opened it, they saw that the check was made out to her father, Romolo Romonini, who died in Italy 34 years ago. He’d been a U.S. citizen when he left for Italy in 1933, but only returned to the United Stated for a seven-month visit in 1969.

Romolo probably donated and voted for Obama too.

Dead People Get Stimulus Checks

The Social Security Administration, which sent out 52 million checks, says that some of those checks mistakenly went to dead people because the agency had no record of their death. That amounts to between 8,000 and 10,000 checks for millions of dollars.

Hurry up and stimulate the economy!

“Most of what is driving us into debt is health care, so we have to drive down costs,” he said.

In liberal land, making energy costs higher is a good thing because it makes us conserve, take consumption seriously, and work toward energy alternatives.

Why does this not apply to health care if it is so righteous.

With this liberal pretzel logic, keeping health care costs high would make people take better care of themselves and not abuse the health care system right?
