Obama whines: How come 1% in earmarks is a lot but 1% in budget cuts isn’t?
posted at 8:57 pm on May 14, 2009 by Allahpundit
Tapper calls this an “interesting point,” which I assume is his polite euphemism for “moronic.”
“I just want to make a little commentary about the media here, if you don’t mind,” Mr. Obama said this afternoon in Rio Rancho, NM, at a town hall meeting on credit card reform.
“When Congress included in last year’s budget a whole bunch of earmarks, you remember there was a week worth of stories about how terrible these earmarks were,” the president recounted. “You remember this…a week’s worth of stories: ‘Oh, these earmarks, this is what’s blowing up the deficit, this is terrible,’ blah, blah, blah.”
Continued the president: “And yet, as I said before, that was less than 1 percent of that entire budget that had been signed. When we find $17 billion worth of cuts in programs, what do the same folks say? They say, ‘Oh, that’s nothing.’…That’s not significant. That’s not important.’
“Well, you can’t have it both ways,” the president said. “If those earmarks were important, then this money is important, too.”
Imagine you’re $10,000 in debt and your grand plan for reducing the load is to make one $50 payment. Now imagine that a bank owes you $10,000 and the teller only pays out $9,950 because he decided to pocket $50 of it for himself. That’s the difference, essentially, between budget cuts and earmarks. Earmarks are basically congressional bribes to fundraisers in their home districts: A pol dumps a few million in public money in someone’s lap, that someone dumps a few hundred thousand in private money into the pol’s campaign treasury, and incumbency is assured — sans scrutiny. It’s a specie of (tolerated) corruption, in other words, and as such any amount of it is too much. How is it some moral victory that only one percent or so of last year’s budget went to de facto bribes? Budget cuts, meanwhile, are perfectly legitimate, in which case their significance only really matters relative to the whole. If next year’s budget starts at $5 trillion and The One trims a trillion off in fat, that’s super but we’d still be looking at monster spending that exceeds even this year’s bloat.
Of course, as Tapper does note, he didn’t really “cut” any money at all; he just reallotted it to other programs. Combine that with the fact that the total budget was revised upwards this week by another $89 billion — more than five times the amount of the cuts we’re all supposed to be so impressed with — and the more apt comparison here is between 1% in earmarks and, er, -2% in “cuts.” Good work, Barry.
Update: If you want to know why he’s suddenly resorting to points as desperate as this, it’s because he’s running out of excuses.

massrighty on May 14, 2009 at 9:21 PM
OK, clearly his cutting a previously inflated spending is bullshit.
Question, however. I totally and in all seriousness admit to not paying it enough attention. I was under the impression that almost every single spending proposed by Obama is essentially pork. Like “alternative fuels” in my book is 100% pork. Is it not so?
What’s the definition of pork then? Because (and I’ve already professed my ignorance on this subject) if pork is only 1% of all spending, then I’m sorry, I do see a moral victory here.
Much like if the number of murders dropped by a factor of 5, that would be a huge victory, the horrible tragedy of deaths still occurring notwithstanding.
I’m not claiming Obama reduced pork 5 times. My point is rather that if we say that we’re all for reducing government spending, then the entire topic of “pork” is a red herring.

Obama is the one that told US how the earmarks were insignificant, and that the budget cuts were worthy.
Apparently, he’s trying to have it all four ways.

We have a joke in my house for situations like this:
Infinity minus one is still Infinity.
A few billion out of a $3.5 trillion deficit (and we all know this is a floor, there will be massive supplementals later that will push it closer to $4 trillion) is Infinity Minus One.
rockmom on May 14, 2009 at 9:23 PM
Wow, so we’re still pretending to be “fiscally conservative” on the earmarks, even though getting rid of them doesn’t actually reduce the total size of a bill? I don’t think most people understand that last part.

That was my first thought. For a lawyer Obama is terrible at logic. You can’t from a logical standpoint complain about someone saying the cuts are not a big deal but the earmarks are when you yourself say the earmarks are not a big deal but the cuts are. He could argue why earmarks aren’t a big deal but the spending cuts in the middle of major spending increases are. I would love to hear it since there is no good way to do that politically (which is why he didn’t do it).
I completely agree. Which is why even during the campaign I thought as rockmom points out that Obama needed to be pressed (obviously McCain was not the man to do it). Thin skinned god-man narcissists cannot tolerate any disagreement or criticism. This is another example, going after the media in a wholly unpresidential manner because they aren’t toeing the line. The WHCD also gave many examples, laughing at the Limbaugh death wish and the gratuitous “joke” about Cheney.

Are you guys f*cking retarded? What the f*ck is this, seriously? I’m asking a question. Go call whoever wipes your drool and have them read it to you and explain. Or shut the f*ck up and let somebody with a brain respond.
Again, the question is. Wasn’t pork being portrayed as a huge problem? Clearly, it is a problem but seeing as how it’s only 1% of spending, isn’t it kind of secondary? I’m really trying to understand.
radiofreevillage on May 14, 2009 at 10:05 PM
As Obama should have learned by now: The media giveth, the media taketh away. They created this media whore by their “thrills running my leg” and “look at those pecs” and now the chrome is rubbing away and they noticed the real Obama: Chicago corruption, payola, scandals, crime, ineptitude, tax cheats, graft, hypocrisy and runaway spending.
What is hilarious is the anointed one has turned 180 degrees and taken Bush’s foreign policy in Iraq and Afghanistan and NO ONE SAYS ANYTHING: Obama lied, people died?

sven10077 on May 14, 2009 at 10:32 PM
Well, not cursing for starters might help.
The point about pork is that it is a process through which politically favored businesses, universities, and other institutions get special access to OUR money. There is no transparency, no competition, and the more senior politicians get more of it to dole out to their favored friends back home.
One dollar of pork is just as bad as one billion dollars of pork. Our elected representatives should be fierce guardians of our precious dollars ALL THE TIME. They should never play favorites with OUR money. The earmark process has turned them all into the functional equivalents of crack addicts or alcoholics who can’t stop getting high with OUR money.

I know something about this too. I used to be a lobbyist and one of my best friends is an appropriations lobbyist. He makes a ton of money getting earmarks for his clients, and is able to do this because he happens to be from the same state as a senior Appropriations Committee member and has known him personally since he was in the state senate back home. It’s just dumb luck and it has made him a millionaire.
Staffers who leave the Appropriations Committee quite often encounter bidding wars for their “services.” I’ve seen 30-year-olds making $500,000 a year, doing nothing but making some phone calls to their old boss.
If you can’t see anything wrong with that, I can’t help you.
