Maybe this is the reason they picked Biden?

posted at 10:12 am on May 14, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

When Barack Obama picked Joe Biden as his running mate, we all wondered what Obama had been smoking.  Biden not only had the taint of plagiarism from his first presidential run, he had built a reputation for making serial gaffes when off of his (or Neil Kinnock’s) script.  What value did Obama see in bringing that kind of loose-cannon, banana-peel reputation into the administration?

After Biden’s first quarterly report on the stimulus this week and the AP’s fact-check, the role seems clear — the fool who takes the heat:

Many of the claims the White House is making are based on anecdotes selected to fit the Obama administration’s message. For instance, the report cites a newspaper article about workers being rehired at a factory in Chicago. That account is true, but is no more an accurate snapshot of the nation’s economy than a story, not cited in the report, about a Roanoke, Va., railcar factory closing.

Capturing the full effect of the stimulus at this early stage is difficult, but the administration has set high bars for success. In championing those successes, however, the White House plays a little loose with the facts.

A little loose with the facts?  That’s putting it mildly.  Joe Biden tried to claim an increase in hiring in New Orleans, while the unemployment rate skyrocketed in the first quarter.  The AP reserves a special place for Biden’s uncheckable “150,000 jobs created” since the stimulus passed:

The argument is that the job numbers would have been even worse had it not been for the stimulus, and the difference between those numbers is a net positive.

To visualize that disconnect, consider this: The administration has promised to create or save 600,000 more jobs in the next 100 days. Even if the nation loses another 5 million jobs during that span (a highly unlikely prospect) the White House could still claim success.

Sure they can.  They can claim success as often as they like when they pull numbers out of their nether regions, the origin point for their “150,000 jobs” claims.  Few news organizations have insisted on an accounting of those jobs.  King Banaian explained the calculation earlier this month; the administration basically believes that a certain amount of spending creates a new job, and that therefore they can claim X number of new jobs based on nothing other than the amount of money they’ve spent.  They’re not looking at the BLS numbers for unemployment to determine whether these policies work.  They’re just spending the money, mostly on non-stimulus Democratic wish lists like projects as relevant as high-speed rail.

Only a fool would believe these statements, and only a fool would make them.  Fortunately for Barack Obama, he hired one last August.

The real reason O picked Joe was to get those Pennsylvania votes.

Remember, he really wasn’t from Delaware at all, but originally from Scranton. And don’t you forget it (until after the election).

Given the increasing unemployment rate since Obama took office, how can “Fact Check” keep a straight face, or maintain credibility, making the claim that a company hiring is no more accurate than a company laying off workers?

Biden is the tool that Obama can exploit like a puppet. Biden can test the waters by lying with the greatest of ease and his limited intelligence does not present any threat of independent thinking. Standing beside someone so inferior only enhances the stature of being the Messiah. Having senators with 40 years experience lie and cheat at your beckon call is a tool that democrats want around them.

A pretty prominent Democratic lobbyist told me that Obama’s first choice for VP was actually Chris Dodd, but after the revelation of Dodd’s Friends of Angelo loan he was dropped. The Dems knew Obama needed somebody with some foreign policy chops, and they desperately wanted a Catholic as well. Biden had no enemies and no skeletons in his closet. So he was a logical choice.

We get mush from Obama, mush from Biden, and mush from nearly all of the “journalists” covering (up for) the administration.

We can’t rely on the news, we have to rely on people like Ed Morrissey to wade through the curdles to find any grains of truth buried in them. And it’s often sickeningly sweet and really deep, too. Yuck!

Loxodonta on May 14, 2009 at 10:41 AM

In fact, the “stimulus” has caused a loss of 25 million jobs. Luckily, I personally went out and saved many of those. It was a busy afternoon, but I did it because I was patriotic.

And you know Apollo 11? It was headed for disaster, but with Al Gore busy inventing the Internet, I had to step in and completely re-design the LEM to make it safe.

Uniblogger on May 14, 2009 at 10:49 AM

The strange thing is that there is a pretty straightforward way to work out if Obama’s stimulus spending is actually generating more economic activity than would otherwise have occurred: tax collections. If the government is really “creating or saving” jobs, that will show up with higher than otherwise expected federal income tax withholding or Social Security tax collections. That both are already far below the levels that they were projected to be when the stimulus bill was passed is an indication that the measure really isn’t working.

Tremmy on May 14, 2009 at 11:08 AM

Even if the nation loses another 5 million jobs during that span (a highly unlikely prospect)…blockquote>

What makes this highly unlikely? The auto industry alone will be directly and indirectly responsible for hundreds of thousands of coming job losses. GM is closing most of its facilities for nine weeks over the summer. Just imagine the ripple effect through the economy. GM is getting good old government money. But how many of their suppliers are getting government subsidies? How many of the little supply houses can stand a nine week shut down? And I also wonder how many of those GM facilities will never reopen?

I expect continued carnage on the job loss front until Mugabe is stopped. PLus, we must purge the trillions in excess debt from the system (repaid or defaulted) before our economy can work again. U-6 unemployment, the most meaningul number, will reach 25%+ before its all over, no later than next year. Unless and until the statist agenda is stopped, we will never see meaningful and sustained job recovery, save in a few Administration-favored sectors.

No presents under the tree this year!

moxie_neanderthal on May 14, 2009 at 11:44 AM

This is all a matter of media presentation. Joe Biden says about as many stupid things as Nancy Pelosi or Harry Reed; and far fewer than Barak Obama. Biden gaffs just get more mainstream media air time. THAT is according to plan, but most of Biden’s statements are not.

Take this statement; there’s nothing affected about this. This “idiocy” is exactly the way that all collectivists see the world. They take money from millions of people, and use it to improve the lives of thousands of people for a short time. And doing this makes liberals feel like Gods.

Biden may be running his mouth a little more loosely than his comrades, but don’t give him more credit then he deserves. He’s not sitting around intentionally thinking up foolish thing to say. He believes every word of this.

Whatever the either the Administration or the media are presenting (sometimes the two are indistinguishable) to the public, you should always ask “They are using one hand to distract me, what is the other hand doing?” VP Biden was probably picked because it allows them to fill the news with something dopey he’s said to distract from something far more important that’s going on they want little attention to it.

However, if the Pres 57 States Obama and VP Don’t Take Subway, Biden, were republicans, they would have been skewered to an inch of their hides by the ‘unbiased’ media, and would have never been elected last year; and every media conference and news report would outline every one of their gaffes to remind voters just how supposedly ‘stoooopid’ and ‘out of touch’ those politicians are.
