Crazy Arnie: Everything must go! Update: Reason says, “Hasta la vista, baby”

California voters have an opportunity to tell lawmakers to stop hiking their taxes and start getting serious about budget reductions in the face of a $23 billion deficit in an upcoming special election — and the power elite is getting mighty nervous.  Andrew Malcolm highlights the latest scare tactic to come out of Sacramento: the fire sale of state properties like San Quentin’s prison and the Los Angeles Colisseum as a means to gin up enough money to keep Sacramento spending.  They’re certainly picking one hell of a time to get into real estate speculation:

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger wants to sell the Los Angeles Coliseum, San Quentin State Prison, the Orange County Fairgrounds and other state property to raise cash amid the state’s growing fiscal crisis, according to a copy of a proposal reviewed by The Times.

Sale of the properties, to be included in the governor’s revised budget plan on Thursday, would raise between $600 million and $1 billion, although it would not provide relief to state coffers for two to five years, according to the proposal.

Er, what?  A billion dollars, tops?  In five years?  Come on, Governor — throw in some state parks!  How about the Golden Gate Bridge?  I understand some people made a lot of money reselling that over the years, too.

Andrew scoffs at the notion:

Everything must go. Sky also falling. …

But leaked word of the suggestion is priceless political publicity in terms of dramatizing the state’s pathetic financial situation and — gee, do you suspect? — attempting to sway popular opinion to vote in favor of the governor’s upcoming budget proposition.

The governor’s budget proposition is — how shall we put it? — currently also operating in a deficit position in terms of recent polling support among voters who would be imposing the new taxes on themselves. Always an easy sell.

Or perhaps not.  Brian Faughnan pointed out this Rasmussen poll of Californians, who don’t appear to be buying the Golden Gate Bridge or Arnie’s schtick:

Californians will vote next Tuesday on a series of budget-related propositions, and one thing is clear from new Rasmussen Reports telephone polling in the state: Voters aren’t in the mood for tax increases to ease California’s budget woes.

Seventy-three percent (73%) of California voters oppose raising state income taxes to eliminate the budget deficit. Raising the state sales tax is opposed by 69%.

At the same time, 69% favor major cuts in government spending to eliminate the budget deficit. Just 16% oppose the spending cuts.

That’s bold-print, 36-point headline fodder.  The last time 73% of Californians agreed on anything, it was that gold looked pretty good to them.  The last time 73% supported tax cuts, they meant from the Mexican government.  One of the bastions of liberalism just became a supply-sider state, thanks to the absurd spending spree in which Sacramento has indulged itself for the last few decades.

Maybe the only things that have to go are Crazy Arnie and the state legislature.

Update: Reason TV says, “Hasta la vista … baby!”

My friend Nick Gillespie does a great job in narrating this deconstruction of the Governator. Be sure to watch it all the way through, and then visit Reason for intelligent libertarianism.

He’s just a wild and crazy guy, that Arnie.

Great photo!

As goes CA, …

Wildfires are horrible. I’m wondering how much is fanned by progressives wanting their insurance money to take their marbles somewhere else to abuse.

maverick muse on May 14, 2009 at 11:01 AM

Yeah, good for the citizens of California. Now, though, they probably will need to dig up the Terminator for real to get the legislature to stop spending on their pet projects.

For crying out loud–California has what, a 40 odd billion dollar budget? Or something absurd? And certainly not many roads are being built to ease traffic! You pay a million cops 70,000 a year each and that’s only 70 million. A million teachers, another 70 million. Most of those salaries are from local property taxes, too! What the heck is the state government spending it on?

Oh yeah–illegals, berkeley orgies, etc.

Vanceone on May 14, 2009 at 11:01 AM

How about selling the Governor and the State legislature?

I bet Californians would be willing to PAY BIG BUCKS to have all those hands taken out of their pockets.

Loxodonta on May 14, 2009 at 11:02 AM

OMG! and LOL. Great photo Ed.

On a serious note. Arnold please switch parties. Raising taxes to level you want to is not a fiscal conservative thing to do. I can tolerate your social liberal ways, but when you want to raise taxes on everyone there is nothing different between you and Grey Davis.

Lance Murdock on May 14, 2009 at 11:04 AM

Here is a unique idea…cut back on elected officials pay, and benefits. Charge them for health benefits.
Now make a 10% budget cut in every single budget item, and cut back 10% on the government work force.
On second thought, make the legislator’s work only 6 months of the year, and pay them for only 6 months. They can find jobs for the other 6 months, as attorneys or in business, or loading freight cars.
They don’t have 12 months of work for the state elected…there is only so many bills they can pass, so many news conferences.

right2bright on May 14, 2009 at 11:04 AM

San Quentin? State never should have taken it from the Feds, it SHOULD have been sold as private property.

Orange COUNTY Fairgrounds? Should be County of Privatly owned, like all the other Fairgrounds in the State.

LA Coliseum? Why is that one STATE owned, when other large venues are Private?

State should not have owned these things in the first place.

I’m told that part of the giant California budget deficit is the fault of these same voters. Maybe some Californians can confirm, but apparently it is relatively easy to get mandatory spending measures on the ballot in California, and if they “feel good” – like a lot of environmental measures, people vote for them without thinking about the full ramifications.

How about we cut the budget back to what it was 10 years ago and then update it for inflation + population growth. How about that? Huh?

Of course the state legislature is already planning new ways to pass more taxes and get around the 2/3 rule so methinks they still haven’t learned. Here’s hoping we become the first state to find out what a state does when it runs out of money(can’t go backrupt…)

No, California has a $140 BILLION budget. The DEFICIT was $40 billion back in Feb before the largest state tax increase in US history. And of course that $40 billion deficit was a rosey estimate. They have already said that even with the tax increas we are like $8 billion in further in the hole. What a state eh? Weather’s nice though.

oddjob1138 on May 14, 2009 at 11:13 AM

Unfortunately the one big thing Arnie could sell which would be of real economic benefit to both California and the country are drilling and production rights to offshore oil deposits.

But that would just make too much sense.

mrveritas on May 14, 2009 at 11:13 AM

Be nice to Arnie because he’s one of the folks under the big tent (just like AP’s wonder girl – Meghan McCain).

We need to forget supply-side ecnomics and think about fairness and patriotism and how it makes us feel to pay taxes (I mean how good it feels knowing that we are helping someone who has too much dignity to work for minimum wage or helping someone who is too busy playing PS3 to really put the effort in finding/maintaining employment).

matthew26 on May 14, 2009 at 11:14 AM

kc8ukw on May 14, 2009 at 11:05 AM

It’s true. In the late 1980s voters approved a constitutional amendment that requires 48 cents of every dollar the state spends to go to K-12 education. The legislature and Governor have no discretion to reduce this, even in dire economic times or when the state faces multiple natural disasters such as a major earthquake and wildfires.

But apparently this only works when voters want to increase or mandate state spending. When voters decided to deny state benefits to illegal aliens, the California Supreme Court invalidated it.

rockmom on May 14, 2009 at 11:14 AM

Maybe the only things that have to go are Crazy Arnie and the state legislature.

Arnie’s termed-out and there’s no point in recalling him, but the legislature is a problem that needs a systemic fix. First, the elimination of safe-seats. The redistricting initiative passed in ‘08 might just do that.

More important, it was a long-term mistake to move the legislature from part-time to full-time status in 1964: since then, legislators have felt pressured to pass laws, any laws, to justify their salaries and expenses. A few yeasr ago, I read the CA legislature passes three new laws per day. Ridiculous.

Returning them to part-time status and cutting their staffs and perks would be a good way to start moving this state back to sanity.

Bishop on May 14, 2009 at 11:40 AM

I stand corrected on my math. My point was that there’s no way that California needs that much dough.

Look, Utah is my state. We also have a one party system–Republican. But our legislature meets for six weeks and goes home. It might be ten weeks. We have a rainy day fund, and our state just chopped 8 percent from all budgets last year in the summer. These were real cuts, too–my dad teaches at a local community college and they were laying off professors and so forth, including one of my dads department mates.

Result? Balanced budget still. No new taxes either, though a few fees were raised. Plenty of grumbling about it, too. But it was time for the government to go on a diet.

The biggest whiners? The education union, which already gets over 50 percent of Utah’s taxes. They can’t get much more. I hate unions.

Dianne Feinstein and the envirowackos vetoed the solar plant in the Mojave Desert over his objections. And you know Schwartenegger would OK offshore drilling and nuclear power plants that would bring huge money and employment to California.

Even a governor can’t save a state that’s determined to drive itself off a cliff. The voters of CA have put themselves in this position where all they have left is state owned landmarks and parks to auction off to save their asses.

You can’t blame that on Schwartenegger. He probably had faith that they would listen to reason….sadly, the voters of CA proved him wrong.

The voters in Utah don’t demand infinite government services while also voting to stifle all free-market ways to raise money to pay for those services like the voters of CA.

Would someone please tell me why I should be the least bit bothered by this?

Dead on. My wife recently lost her job in the Georgia State system – due to a “re-org”. i.e. she is white and needed to go, whereas “others” were kept – who fit the profile to a T of what you stated. Thankfully she landed a higher paying job in the private sector.

Ironically, 3 weeks after she heard her job was toast, they asked her a) what she did on a daily basis, then b) if she could stay on for 2 more months to “train” those lackeys left over.

She smiled, and handed her resignation 2 weeks earlier than her original “fire date” and since then has gotten over 20 or so emails and letters from Professors and C level clients who were outraged…

Reap what you sow gubnet…

She was nervous, couldn’t answer the questions without going back and reading her prepared statement. She was all over the place.

Someone dude on Fox just stated that her poll numbers are tanking.

More popcorn is right!!!!

Well, she’s right if she’s talking about Val Plame and her sorry-ass husband.

Give their budget to DIA, who does better work anyway.

Some fool buys the fairgrounds, then gets socked with an ED declaring the land is needed for a critical state project. The state grabs the land and then sells it again to a developer.

Bishop on May 14, 2009 at 11:40 AM

I don’t think the state would do that, but there is that risk. So, potential buyers might have to factor that in, impacting time and price of any such sale.

When it comes to doing business with the government, everything is complicated. But first, take a number and wait in line.

Just watched the Pelosi Comedy Hour. Definitely a 3 drink minimum… loved how she rushed back to the podium, to answer a hard hitting question – and made a complete ass of herself for the 5th time in 7 minutes.

She is fodder for the Dems and will be asked to step down, being they don’t want a nasty and embarrassing impeachment of the first female Speaker evah!

Just another example of “first” not being “better”. See Obama also…

One of the main problems with California state government is the small size of the Legislature compared to the population. It has only 80 House members (51 D, 29 R) and 40 Senators (25 D, 14 R, 1 open) for a population of 33.9 million.

Compare that to Connecticut, which has 151 House members and 36 Senators for 3.5 million people.

In California, a State Senator represents about 850,000 people, and a House member represents 425,000 people.

In Connecticut, a State Senator represents about 100,000 people, and a House member about 23,000 people.

With such a small House of Representatives, it’s very easy for the majority party (Democrats) in California to gerrymander huge districts that always include enough people on the state dole to guarantee election of big-spenders, while taxpayers are not represented. It also allows spending bills to be railroaded through the legislature with very little debate, and legislative committees have very few members.

California probably needs a bigger House, but it would take a Constitutional Amendment to increase its membership–good luck with that!

For California residents, do you have any popcorn that’s 80 proof?

Loxodonta on May 14, 2009 at 11:52 AM

I’ll give ya’ $100 for Hollywood.

Seriously, first step, no more funding related to illegals. Nothing but critical, emergency medical treatment, only pay social benefits to legally documented residents, purge all bilingual (aka “Mexican”) funding in schools, etc. And yes I said Mexican and not Spanish, because it is the mass influx from Mexico that has created the bilingual costs. Although, I suppose in Cali. there may be some Asian language stuff as well, so cancel that too. Anyone caught with illegal “documentation” should be immediately deported and all of their assets claimed and sold, similar to what is done with drug busts.

Watch the video and see some of the shrieking union workers with clear social, mental and emotional issues.

When you give lifetime jobs to the incompetent, it’s a recipe for budget disaster.

what happens after you run out of things to sell and you still have budget problems?

jp on May 14, 2009 at 11:56 AM

Actually, selling San Quentin is a splendid idea. It sits on some of the most desirable real estate in California, with fantastic Bay views. It would make for great subdivisions, homes and shops.

I say go for it.

Build prisons in the Mojave Desert where land is worth $100 per acre and where the prisoners will regret being there.

Luckily we have other countries’ examples to guide us. You can turn to prostitution, child and otherwise, and you can export your people to wealthy foreign lands where add’l labor is needed.

that’s a prob. with the US Congress as well. Capped at 435, it concentrates power too much in the hands of too few. We ought to have 1000’s of these leeches in Congress, so that there is no possibility whatsoever that they can work together to become more powerful than the people. Think I’m kidding? I’m not. I’d rather have a more ineffective gov’t, than a totalitarian one.
