Video: Time for another 800-comment police brutality thread

posted at 8:17 pm on May 13, 2009 by Allahpundit

Via HuffPo, an unusual entry in our long series of cops behaving badly: There’s no doubt that this is, in fact, brutality, but there is some doubt that any serious harm was done. Also, what’s the deal with the press making a big deal about the high-five? It’s not clear if the second cop even saw the kick to the suspect’s face. Looks to me like they’re celebrating having apprehended him, not booting him in the skull.

Still, a nasty blow, and one for which he’ll surely reprimanded. Prediction: Desk duty for three months.

For some thread drift on those long car chases. The FAA grounds the media skanks and the police choppers get snipers. End of problem.

What a professional…trained no less.

Other cops end up with added stigma.

Us taxpayers foot the bill for the lawsuit.

The police force disproportionately attracts powermongers? Say it isn’t so.

deesine on May 13, 2009 at 11:10 PM

Ever been at a police riot? I have.

Ever seen police dressed in paramilitary gear bash peoples heads in until they are bloody messes? Knock every tooth in their heads out and then beat them some more just becuase they chose the wrong bar to drink in that night and the Tactical Police Force decided to raid that bar that night? I have

Most people today have no idea what real police brutality looks like.

TheBigOldDog on May 13, 2009 at 9:04 PM

Actually had the Guardia shoot up a bar in Barcelona just minutes after I had left it. They were pretty indiscriminate with their aim too, glad I left when I did.

Oldnuke on May 13, 2009 at 11:15 PM

It’s amazing how pro-cop the comments are here when the person getting the beat-down is a male.

TMK on May 13, 2009 at 11:16 PM

I wish cops could do this more often to thugs like this. It just kills me when these guys run through several streets running, smash 4 or 5 cars, and then give up and get like 2-years probation.

The only thing I hate about this is that when a cop does this, the criminals end up getting away with the crime and even make money off of lawsuit.

Umm…I am a cop and I think those actions by the officers is despicable. When cops act like that, I can understand why people mistrust the police. I understand the adrenalin when you catch up to a guy but you have to control it or find a new line of work. The guy was giving up too, Sheesh…

My Father was a LAPD for years. He told me one night, never lie to a cop but never ever trust them. Even though Fox News said it wasn’t his face, it still wasn’t right. But it happened. With camera crews one would think they wouldn’t have done it in public view.

More ignorant remarks from the ill informed.

Cops are trained to stay in control of the situation. If the perp escalates, the officer has to escalate further to maintain control. The criminals start it and the cop finishes it.

The guy is a common thug, not a law abiding citizen and I’ll be damned if I sit here and let you bleeding hearts turn this country over to people who thrive on criminal behavior because people like you want to take the “moral” high ground.

Where is your moral outrage at the criminal for all the property damage he caused? Many time the victims are left to their own to collect compensation from these turds. And even if they do get compensated from their insurance company, their history reflects a claim that works against them.

God you types make me sick.

sirmyth on May 13, 2009 at 11:32 PM

Very well said. Do people here really not understand how the justice system is supposed to work? Punishment is determined in the courts *after* the defendant is afforded due process. Police do the arresting *before* the defendant has his day in court. They do not and should not punish.

The only thing criminals understand is brutality.

God protect us from idiotic shitheads like you.

csdeven on May 14, 2009 at 12:34 AM

Do you really support a system that gives out punishment without a trial? Really? Yes, there is no doubt that this person committed a crime in this case. But is due process really a principle you want to disregard? Do you not know the history of government and police abuses that motivated that principle playing a major part in the constitution?

I assumed these would be things (freedom, protection from government, etc.) that everyone here would agree on.

I understand police procedures and I don’t put myself in a situation where the cops think I am “reaching” for a gun. I am respectful of the impossible job they are expected to do and I act accordingly. It’s all about control. I am willing to give up a few minutes of total control of my life as a sign of respect to officers of the law who, as a vast majority, decent folks putting their lives on the line for my community. Really, it’s no big deal to let them have the control. Maybe if you’d try showing some respect to them you’d be less inclined to look for a way to demonize them.

csdeven on May 14, 2009 at 1:07 AM

I don’t need to be protected from the police because I am a LAW ABIDING citizen.

csdeven on May 14, 2009 at 12:51 AM

I have never broken the law, but have been seriously harassed by the police twice simply because I am odd. On three separate occasions, I’ve also witnessed police officers hit someone without any just cause. Police officers are subject to the same faults and errors as all of us. Combine that with their powers, and when police officers behave poorly they can produce very cruel and unjust results. Fortunately, that’s relatively rare. But as the police need to be vigilante against criminality, the public must be vigilante against police brutality and corruption.

Unfreakingbelieveable. Criminals don’t pay. Not enough to change their behavior. They get locked up with their own kind for a short time. Three meals a day, shelter, cable TV, and a gym. Fine them to infinity and they don’t pay.

The system is good at punishing people with a stake in its survival. Not so, the cavemen who live by force. Law enforcement deals with these, with precious little support. Bad incidents are magnified by leftists x1000.

SouthernDem on May 14, 2009 at 1:17 AM

Absolutely. The human piece of garbage deserved what he got.

I guarantee you this……if that piece of shit, who just endangered uncounted lives with no thought whatsoever, was considering a feint to put the officer off guard, that thought went right out the window with that brutal kick to the head. It’s all about control. That kick in the head guaranteed the officer (who for all he knew was totally alone with this insane criminal) remained in control of a guy who suddenly realized the “error” of his ways and was going to go peacefully. He had his chance to go peacefully when the officers first tried to pull him over. Human shit like that guy are unpredictable and only a layman would think that guy was suddenly harmless. If he wanted to show he was harmless, he would have gone quietly to begin with.

But, I understand that you think his civil rights to commit a crime, endanger lives, and resist arrest is more important than the impossible job officers are supposed to do.

Nice. Should we thank you for protecting us from this obviously brutal criminal police officer?

Pathetic fascist waste of flesh – may God have mercy on your blighted soul. You’ll beat me to hell by a long ways – fascists first always. You are an embarassment to conservatives, and one reason the nation is moving the other way. Congrats for that, ya POS! I would pray for you, but I doubt it would help.

Yes. This is why I have great respect for police officers in general. They aren’t fascists or pigs. I want police to be tough on crime. Yet, given the power they have, I also want to promote a police culture that attempts to achieve high standards of ethics.

So, in this particular case, I appreciate the adrenaline and anger the officer must have experienced when finally capturing that very reckless criminal. However, I still would like at least some disciplinary measure taken to let everyone know that police shouldn’t kick perpetrators in the head when they are splayed out flat on the ground.

I believe one can conceal a lot in psychiatric examinations. But even if that filters out nearly all who shouldn’t be officers, people change over time. And then there are those who have bad days or react badly in extreme circumstances.

As one cannot expect people to police their own behavior without the police and courts, one cannot expect every police officer to be perfect all of the time. So, there has to be vigilance, training, disciplinary actions, and then weeding out in the worst of cases.

Loxodonta on May 14, 2009 at 1:58 AM

OMG! You dare to call that police brutality?

That is a fU@#ing JOKE!

This dude just precipitated a high speed chase in which he was going the wrong way down the street, endangered countless lives, caused thousands in property damage, then he flees police on foot and you think THAT little tap is a little too harsh?

Incredible. Allah should be fired.

This is true. And smart killers can deceive smart but naive psychiatrists and psychologists. A degree is no protection against liberalism.

The point of all this, for me anyway, is that a return to swift and effective justice will lower the chances of having these incidents. I’ve know a few LEs and there’s never been a time in our history when a group was more professional.

Feedie on May 14, 2009 at 2:13 AM

The kick was stupid and absolutely uncalled for. I can;t find any other fault and in this case the guy was guilty of a string of things leading up to the kick.

This is rather different from many other cases we see where police go overboard without any cause at all.

Fair call Allah… desk duty …maybe a week or two off.

lexhamfox on May 14, 2009 at 2:19 AM

Should have kicked him harder!

BayCon on May 14, 2009 at 2:47 AM

Liberalism is the reason these chases get to this point in the first place. In days gone by, before liberal juries and judges ran the show, police chases would last a matter of minutes or less because the perps knew the cops had the power to stop them. Now the perps can take a whole police force on a four hour dog and pony show through multiple counties and jurisdictions because they know that the cops have to be careful and play it safe. When I see one of these extended “chases” on TV it makes me think that this country has truly lost it’s way, and the inmates are running the asylum. It’s pathetic to see some loser with 20 cop cars in pursuit and no one has the authority or balls to put an end to it. Absolutely pathetic. I support the good work the police do on a daily basis, but the liberals have taken away their ability to do their job, because they care more about criminals rights than victims rights. Which of course encourages more crime and bad behavior. Any thug who runs from the cops and puts innocent lives in danger should get AT LEAST a kick to the head. Not that it will ever happen, but I say change the laws so this type of treatment is legal. I fully support police brutality and I take great pleasure in seeing low-life, scumbag steet-thugs get brutalized. They deserve it, and more. Give that cop a medal. My guess is that people are starting to run from the cops now, HOPING they get kicked in the head, so that they can win a multi-million dollar lawsuit. Beats selling drugs.

GFW on May 14, 2009 at 6:29 AM

but there is some doubt that any serious harm was done

This is not something I would ever do, regardless of whether I thought he deserved it. It isn’t a cop’s job to deliver punishment. Any cop acting like this needs therapy and a different occupation.

Due to the nature of the work and the difficult working conditions, cops should get psych evals often and mandatory vacation regardless of the workload.

dogsoldier on May 14, 2009 at 6:35 AM

Few crimes are as reprehensible as those committed by police officers who violate the very laws they have sworn to uphold.

Man, what kind of cop hating liberal pansy would say something like that?

Gregory Jones, Special Agent in Charge, FBI Atlanta

Pablo on May 14, 2009 at 6:53 AM

Those who say that the rule of law must prevail are correct, but, they are also the ones who constantly call for a further weakening of the law.

You weaken the law when you allow people to break it with impunity. That cop broke the law. That the scumbag broke the law first is beside the point. He will be dealt with, under the law, a kick in the head not withstanding. And as has been pointed out, he’s probably going to get paid a significant number of taxpayer dollars because of the action of a cop who either couldn’t or wouldn’t control himself and simply do his job, but instead decided to break the law too. And what do we call people who break the law? Criminals.

Pablo on May 14, 2009 at 6:59 AM

The outrage will begin when this perp walks because a hothead like you kicked him instead of calmly reading him his rights. Yes, I know you don’t think he has rights.

I believe this criminal should pay for every law he has broken in accordance to our laws. Just like this cop should pay for breaking those same laws by assaulting a private citizen. This is called being fair.

[sirmyth on May 14, 2009 at 12:51 AM]

Well, there’s the problem right there. The laws are not fair. If they were, any law that the police officer violated wrt his kicking the perp would be irrelevant to the perp’s case. The perp wouldn’t walk and would get the full measure of justice for the crimes he committed.

Yet you fully expect the perp will walk because of the officer’s action and you suggest the outrage should be directed at the officer rather than the justice system that didn’t dispense justice “according to our laws”.

There’s a cause and effect here. While I abhor what the officers did and feel he should be punished, I understand the underlying impetus for the reason that it might have occurred. I’m not saying that reason applies here, just the overall atmosphere caused by the system. If you want to have the officers act calmly and without emotion, freely and spontaneously, then the system needs to be run in a manner that enhances that outcome, not one that begs officers to dispense the only justice a criminal gets.

Dusty on May 14, 2009 at 7:09 AM

If you want to have the officers act calmly and without emotion, freely and spontaneously, then the system needs to be run in a manner that enhances that outcome, not one that begs officers to dispense the only justice a criminal gets.

That’s upside down and backwards. If the system turns people loose for stupid cop tricks like this one (and I don’t agree that it does) then the atmosphere would discourage such stupid cop tricks because they prevent real justice from being carried out. It wouldn’t “beg” cops to “dispense justice” it would do the opposite. Because the perps wouldn’t get cut loose if not for cops “dispensing justice”.

Pablo on May 14, 2009 at 7:19 AM

I’m afraid I could not be a cop. I would have tased his ass just for $hits and giggles.

conservnut on May 14, 2009 at 7:45 AM

Ouch. No real defending this one. Yes, some of us make take a little pleasure out of seeing a dirtbag taking a shot to the face, but as bombos said:

The only thing I hate about this is that when a cop does this, the criminals end up getting away with the crime and even make money off of lawsuit.

bombos on May 13, 2009 at 11:16 PM

and that is the real injustice. What this cop did could very well cause the criminal case to be dropped against this guy.

Most legit cases of excessive force are because the officer(s) got emotionally involved. We must always remember that, despite administration PC phrases like “protect and serve” and “community policing”, our job is to be an impartial enforcer of the law. That is why police are given the crediblity they are in the courts. Acting as an impartial third party you have no reason to lie.

You liberals are deranged! It’s clear that you are projecting onto this officer exactly what you are in the sick dark places in your mind. Your desires are to kick innocent people, so when you see incidences like this, you assume that person is exhibiting the same sick behavior that you embrace.

Officers are taught to stay in control of situations. When the shitbags that you admire (because they resist “The Man”) create a violent situation, officers must escalate to maintain the upper hand to establish control.

What you morons saw was NOT a power hungry NAZI cop dispensing justice. It was a well trained officer kicking the resistance out of a criminal who 30 seconds earlier refused lawful orders to cease and desist. Being that he was alone (as far as he knew), it was prudent for him to protect his life by making damn sure the criminal sack of human shit was serious about giving up. It’s all too common for an officer to to think the scumbag is in compliance, just to find out that he was simply trying to put the officer off guard.

It’s sickening to watch you so called “Americans” spend all your time persecuting decent officers for protecting us from criminals. But as I said earlier, you turds are only offended because you are the ones who want to kick people because you’re frustrated deranged loons who want others to acquiesce to your rules because you think you’re better than everyone else.

It’s time for you products of the 60′s nut job thinking to respect the law and give up a few minutes of control for the sake of community harmony.

For a living, he sells crack, runs extortion on the guys who sell ice cream to the kids in the park, and robs people on the street who are coming home from their honest jobs. That’s how these gangbangers get their money.

So, you’re saying it’s standard procedure to kick prone, compliant suspects in the head? Bullsh*t.

Keeping himself safe is why he’s got his weapon drawn. And what he should have done is kept it drawn until the other officers arrived, and then securely restrained him or had one of the others do it, keeping a bead on the dirtbag until he was cuffed.

Richard Rodriguez. Read the whole article moron.

Late Wednesday afternoon, the driver was identified as 23-year-old Richard Rodriguez of El Monte.

Rodriguez was booked on suspicion of felony evading. He also was held for possible parole violation, meaning he is not eligible for bail.

Rodriguez is a known gang member, Carlson said. He was making hand signs during the pursuit forming an F, “as in the El Monte Flores gang sign.”
