Video: Shuster flips out over Miss California

In fairness, this isn’t anything you wouldn’t hear from Shep on a day when he’s feeling extra pissy. Count on Shuster to miss the point, though: The reason this story is hot isn’t because the public hangs on the every word of “superficial” pageant contestants, it’s because the left’s campaign to humiliate Prejean for an exceedingly gentle statement of opposition to gay marriage is a flashpoint in the conflict between political correctness and Christian belief. What makes her an almost uniquely sympathetic figure in the public debate is that she’s not a polished pol or pundit advancing an agenda. She was asked a simple question about her opinion, gave a simple answer, and has been vilified in the nastiest ways for it ever since — including by people appearing in this clip. Which is to say, it’s because she’s nothing more than a pageant contestant that makes it easy to root for her and makes the story compelling. Even if, like me, you disagree with her on the issue.

Watch ’til the very end or else you’ll miss intellectual giant David Shuster suggesting that people who participate in pageants have nothing useful to say to anyone, ever. There’s a whiff of ostentatious feminism about that — i.e. no one who’d participate in something so superficial and retrograde deserves to be taken seriously — but insofar as it conclusively presumes something about the intelligence of an individual woman based on one aspect of her life, it’s anything but. I disagree. They didn’t want them on the radio because they didn’t want to listen to them. So radios listened to consumer demand. That’s capitalism.

I really fail to see the problem in that case. Consumers were simply using their own free speech in response to the Dixie Chicks using theirs.

Except for the death threats. Those crossed the line and should never be tolerated.

Esthier on May 12, 2009 at 5:43 PM

You know, I might be wrong on this analogy. I still think the reaction to the Chicks was WAY over the top but it does come down to a consumer issue. Miss California doesn’t have a product.

OK, I concede the point.

And David Schuster has a problem with women.

She answered Perez’s question..SHE did not bring it up.

Jamson64 on May 12, 2009 at 5:47 PM

Esthier on May 12, 2009 at 5:45 PM

Here is how it wouldn’t be an issue.

If, before you were hired at PETA or the church, they gave you a list of activities that were unacceptable – and you knew beforehand that they’d get you fired.

Then, yes, hunting or whatever and being fired is okay in my book.

If the pageant told Prejean that she cannot be “against gay marriage” then I’d be okay that she gets fired. I doubt they tell their contestants what to think, so if she has the right to her opinion in the job, then she can’t be fired for it.

lorien1973 on May 12, 2009 at 5:47 PM

Also Jetboy, another thing that bothers me is that a usually reasonable person such as yourself cannot see this for what it is.

Zetterson on May 12, 2009 at 5:37 PM

Bottom line here is this:

What this is is reactionary politics. The lefties were going to hate and vilify Prejean the moment she answered that question. It’s what they do. It would have been a few threads on DU, HuffPo, DKos. Olby would have made her WPITW. And after a couple days, the story would have died out.

But too many on the right reacted so hugely to the left, which only fanned the flames that much more. If the right would have simply ignored those fools as inconsequential, which is what they are, again…it would have lasted only a couple of days.

The left plays off annoying anyone and everyone on the right. No surprise…it’s all they have. Just ignore them.

JetBoy on May 12, 2009 at 5:48 PM

Because other than a few exceptions, it’s a left wing echo chamber. And that’s coming from someone who’s been called a piece of liberal trash. =)

SnarkVader on May 12, 2009 at 5:44 PM

Well, I never called you a liberal piece of trash ;)

Yeah, so you agree that they are biased… So if they don’t make sales, then no one feels bad for them.

If Prejean didn’t make sales to Lefty-Gays, I wouldn’t get all flamed up about it…

However, to tear her down simply because you want to silence dissent, is a little different than not wanting to listen to the Dixie Chicks on your drive home from work… Any radio station that had aired the DC’s songs to a VERY pro-America, righty group would have lost lots of advertisement… The same goes for any lefty group having Prejean give out autographs…

Upstater85 on May 12, 2009 at 5:48 PM

All they had to do, was leave her alone.

Terrye on May 12, 2009 at 5:48 PM

I’m vilified all the time ’round here because of my opinions. What’s your point?

JetBoy on May 12, 2009 at 5:12 PM

Nope. If you’re vilified at all, it’s because of your infinite hypocrisy and rampant vapidity.

Oh, and also your constant defense of sexual perversions.

platypus on May 12, 2009 at 5:49 PM

More Prejean photos.

Less Shuster, Garafuglio, et. al.

blatantblue on May 12, 2009 at 5:49 PM

If Shuster really wants to vomit over Carrie Prejean, he needs to consult a gastro-enterologist. A more healthy male reaction would be drooling and a tightening of the trousers.

Steve Z on May 12, 2009 at 5:49 PM

Of course, you don’t really believe it. How about when the employer is the Catholic Church, and the employee is pro-choice?

radiofreevillage on May 12, 2009 at 5:33 PM

So what did happen to separation of church and state in your pea brain? You have got to be the dimmest bulb here. Interestingly your tone would have us believe you think a lot of yourself. Psst you do not have much.

Jamson64 on May 12, 2009 at 5:50 PM

SnarkVader on May 12, 2009 at 5:47 PM

Actually, I think you could have used Janeane Garrafolo (sp?) as a better example… Except for her stint on 24 (some people will stop watching), it’s not like she’s going on the blue-collar comedy tour… In fact, she seems willing to even discuss her issues with the “faux” conservatives… So we should give her a debate instead of trying to silence her or whatever…

Upstater85 on May 12, 2009 at 5:51 PM

How I’d love to pie Shuster.

blatantblue on May 12, 2009 at 5:54 PM

Even though I’m a conservative I tend to have somewhat liberal views on social issues. Gay marriage is not something I really care that much about. If I had to make a choice I’d probably allow it.

But watching the way Carrie was treated has given me reason to be strongly opposed to gay marriage now. I can’t stand it when the left bullies and intimidates people.

Even though I may have leaned in favor of gay marriage, that doesn’t mean I don’t respect those with a traditional view of marriage.

As a Christian myself, I also recognize the assault Christianity is under right now in this country, and the gay extremists are another symptom of that.

Jamson64 on May 12, 2009 at 5:52 PM

The leftards aren’t “evil”…that’s giving them far too much credit. They’re just stoopid and predictable. Best ignored.

But again, for one, this was never just the Left saying and doing these things to her. For another, since when have you ever said that about any other target of the Left?

Esthier on May 12, 2009 at 5:53 PM

I’ve said it about Rush. It’s one thing when it’s a political figure. And another when it’s an entertainer or celebrity. Prejean is a beauty pageant contestant. Was asked a question, and gave an answer. The lefties aren’t going after her so much over her answer, but that far too many righties have themselves in a tizzy elevating Carrie to some kind of conservative sainthood.

JetBoy on May 12, 2009 at 5:59 PM

She answered a question with her opinion. This Shuster idiot is making the she LIED just like they did with Bush. It was great when they said this is the same opinion as Obama has.

Frances on May 12, 2009 at 6:00 PM

Shuster is a wormy little puke and his opinions are irrelevant and absolutely valueless.

I really don’t see it that way. If you take out everything conservatives have said about her, you’d get rid of just a handful of articles, nearly all done as a response to the ones that were already out there, and not just ones from Lefties.

They’ve been driving this story, not her and not us.

JetBoy on May 12, 2009 at 5:12 PM

I contend that any vilification you perceive to receive here, whether real or imagined, is due much more to the way you present yourself and your opinions than it is to your actual opinions.

Would you like to dispute that?

Bizarro No. 1 on May 12, 2009 at 6:19 PM

OK. And I think that going into personal life is perfectly legitimate in arguments revolving around morals. She has no problem going into other people’s personal lives by claiming their “lifestyle” is inferior. I don’t see what makes her immune from criticism of her own.

Yeah, that’s the tactic for when you really can’t argue in any other way. Cheap, in other words. Anyway, I don’t think she was exactly saying that gays are scum who oughtta all die.

Sure, some care is required, and it seems to be there’s what I would call for lack of a better term a “justifiable defense”. But her entire personal life out of bounds? Sorry. Let her lead by example first.

Here’s the Wall-gets-banned thread, with Paul006 getting banned for good measure:

Paul006 and The Wall are banned for trailer park insults. I’ve warned people about that time and again.

AP – please archive that video under landmark court cases.

I predict that within 2 years, it will be major evidence in the government’s defense against MSNBC’s appeal to SCOTUS after the FCC pulls MSNBC’s broadcast license for lack of audience.

One parting thought about the Dixie Chicks…

I didn’t really think one way or another about the initial kerfuffle, although I thought it was career suicide to insult the same people who had been putting money in your pockets.

However, that all changed when they started crying “censorship” and intimating that people didn’t have the right to RESPOND to what they said.

As if the Dixie Chicks had some previously unknown constitutional right to have their albums bought, concerts attended and songs played on the radio.

They wrapped themselves in the American flag and proclaimed themselves “martyrs” – which the MSM willingly played along with (remember that Rolling Stones cover?)

And they kept intimating and stating outright that people had no right to reply to their statements (statements, I might add, that they initially apologized for, and then retracted their apology).

What they were stating was that free speech protected THEIR speech, but not their opponents.

Now, free speech does NOT cover death threats. That was wrong and every person who sent one should be tracked down and thrown in jail for a long time.

But consumers exercise their free speech by not going to their concerts and by not buying their albums and by petitioning their radio station to not play their songs.

This, unfortunately, was a very common ploy back then, something other anti-war, anti-Bush people like Tim Robbins and Susan Sarandon tried to use.

And what should be noted here is that no one is saying that Perez Hilton, David Shuster et al shouldn’t be able to say what they’re saying.

No one here is trying to claim that Miss Prejean’s first amendment rights are being trampled on because people disagree with her.

But we ARE pointing out the viciousness of the comments and the hypocrisy that they are coming from some of the chief stewards of “tolerance” and “diversity.”

Does Shyster have any personal reasons to get this exercised over this?

d1carter on May 12, 2009 at 7:25 PM

Besides, if you want to make a comparison to something the right did wrong (heh), then I’d point to the 2LiveCrew brouhaha.

They put out a very vulgar rap album (am I repeating myself?) that went absolutely nowhere on the charts. In fact, it was about to drop off of the Billboard top 500 albums when the AFA (American Family Association) pressured the governor of Florida (Bob Martinez) to arrest them on obscenity charges.

This, of course, turned the band into a First Amendment Darling and all of a sudden their album soared on the charts and sold over 2 million copies.

If they had been left alone they would have disappeared without a trace.

But the right decided to go after them and that made them into heroes.

Of course, the aftermath of the story is that many people were left with their album in their collection only to figure out, years later, that it wasn’t any good!

[N]o one who’d participate in something so superficial and retrograde deserves to be taken seriously…

If that’s true, it would include not only the contestants, but the judges, including the one throwing a hissy fit over all this. I’m coming to this late, so I figure at least one of you already figured this out too.

manwithblackhat on May 12, 2009 at 7:44 PM

Jetboy and radiofreevillage

Do either of you feel that the treatment she has received in the press has been agenda based or would you say it has been fair coverage?

Mormon Doc on May 12, 2009 at 8:28 PM

people who participate in pageants have nothing useful to say to anyone, ever.

Might I suggest this is the epitome of elitism? Superficial is stereotyping a whole class of people you have never even met.

David Shuster is superficial working at a superficial network. Are they suggesting that watching the crap on MSNBC is an intellectual thing to do?

Throwing a fit because he didn’t get to see the witch burning on the stake is worse than superficial, it is perverse.
