Video: Shuster flips out over Miss California

In fairness, this isn’t anything you wouldn’t hear from Shep on a day when he’s feeling extra pissy. Count on Shuster to miss the point, though: The reason this story is hot isn’t because the public hangs on the every word of “superficial” pageant contestants, it’s because the left’s campaign to humiliate Prejean for an exceedingly gentle statement of opposition to gay marriage is a flashpoint in the conflict between political correctness and Christian belief. What makes her an almost uniquely sympathetic figure in the public debate is that she’s not a polished pol or pundit advancing an agenda. She was asked a simple question about her opinion, gave a simple answer, and has been vilified in the nastiest ways for it ever since — including by people appearing in this clip. Which is to say, it’s because she’s nothing more than a pageant contestant that makes it easy to root for her and makes the story compelling. Even if, like me, you disagree with her on the issue.
Watch ’til the very end or else you’ll miss intellectual giant David Shuster suggesting that people who participate in pageants have nothing useful to say to anyone, ever. There’s a whiff of ostentatious feminism about that — i.e. no one who’d participate in something so superficial and retrograde deserves to be taken seriously — but insofar as it conclusively presumes something about the intelligence of an individual woman based on one aspect of her life, it’s anything but. Well, the Governator participated in many pageants in his younger days, and no one’s been slammin him for it.

What a putz.

Depends upon what you ingested.
Vashta.Nerada on May 12, 2009 at 4:46 PM
Well Dave, if these women are airheads and have nothing useful to say then why to Perez Hilton ask such a probing question of so-called idiots to begin with?
Go Carrie!!! and I want to know why the press isn’t talking about the real story here, Donald Trump called the “one” out on his aversion to gay-marriage along with don’t ask don’t tell news that he isn’t going to get rid of it through presidential channels. Must make that gay community real proud of their vote for him.
Ricki on May 12, 2009 at 4:47 PM
David Shuster was locked into one too many lockers in High School. The nerd seems a little bitter toward the pretty girl.
RobCon on May 12, 2009 at 4:47 PM
Why is it that gay people hate her so much?
carbon_footprint on May 12, 2009 at 4:47 PM
Sorry, I only made it through 50 seconds. Did he link “people who particpate in pageants” to Sarah Palin? That’s his point dontcha know. I wonder if he knows how many of his female colleagues were also pageant participants?

Can’t handle teh nasal.
aquaviva on May 12, 2009 at 4:47 PM
But Cybill Shepherd was a beauty pageant contestant back in the day. And she’s a gay rights activist.
Should she shut up and jump off a cliff too, Davey?
Abby Adams on May 12, 2009 at 4:47 PM
Sounds like Mr. Shuster is taking this whole gay marriage thing just a tad bit too personally…
makes you wonder…

We’ve got Carrie Prejean, he’s got Janeane Garafalo and Rachel Maddow. I’d be mad, too.

But then, you’re a little biased on that issue, aren’t you?
Gregor on May 12, 2009 at 4:48 PM
I like how the media conveniently ignores that Trump explicitly said Prejean’s views are exactly that of Obambi and Slow Joe. Trump gets credit from me for saying as much.
But there’s no liberal bias in the media or anything. Everyone knows the media’s completely rightwing. /s
wherestherum on May 12, 2009 at 4:48 PM
In fairness? Guy said he wants to vomit because this woman who has been savaged wasn’t stripped of her title, he’s seething in hatred and later tells the other two females to jump off a cliff..
Easy on the BETA-Carotene please, there’s no need for fairness here – Not too mention the endless attacks on this lovely woman he liberally plunged into with glee for a month. I want to smack his sassy face.

Ratings = Loser.
Firebird on May 12, 2009 at 4:49 PM
You can see Olby evidence all over David Shuster’s nose.
Do they know how pathetic they look?
RobCon on May 12, 2009 at 4:49 PM
Agreed 100%. Well, almost 100%…
As I’ve repeatedly stated, Carrie gave an honest answer to that question. Some peeps, like Perez, didn’t care for it. But two things here make me not so sympathetic to Prejean: She willfully accepted her role in her newfound fame, and far too many people take Perez Hilton far too seriously.
So what if the lefties attacked her for her stance? Does it really matter? It’s no surprise, that’s for sure.
And when everyone gets upset over Hilton’s pissy statements, it only gives him more credence. Not to mention, it doesn’t look good when almost immediately, Prejean was the new face of conservative thought, while her claim to fame is strutting around half-naked onstage for cash and prizes.
It really, really is time to move on from Carrie and this whole thing.
JetBoy on May 12, 2009 at 4:49 PM
It is a Beauty Pageant, not a MENSA test.
Boobs and butts. Brains are optional.
Before anyone makes an argument otherwise, let’s explore the popularity of a Beauty Pageant that replaces the bathing suit competition with a spelling bee.
BobMbx on May 12, 2009 at 4:49 PM
Shuster is jealous because Carrie is prettier, smarter, and gets more attention.
csdeven on May 12, 2009 at 4:49 PM
Geez, did his bra come un-snapped?
ThePrez on May 12, 2009 at 4:49 PM
Well, his side lost the fight…so he’s trashing all pageants now. I’ll bet if he had his way and she lost the crown over this, he would be praising pageants as leading the way to enlightened social policy.

Oh, and Oprah Winfrey was also a beauty pageant contestant. How about her? Should we let her talk?
Abby Adams on May 12, 2009 at 4:53 PM
Maybe not. Maybe I was wrong. Is there any reason you would be biased on the issue? Any reason at all?
I admit I could be totally off base. Just asking.

RobCon on May 12, 2009 at 4:55 PM
Shuster needs a good bitch slappin.
Hey Dave, everyone knows your a bone smuggler why hide it?
veni vidi vici on May 12, 2009 at 4:55 PM
It’s morons like Shuster that make me cringe to hold any traditional liberal positions.
I support civil unions – I’m with Ed, get the government out of the love industry and marriages completely, civil unions for everyone.
Then “gay rights” activists pull garbage like this on people who have the unmitigated audacity to question their viewpoint. Character assassination to the umpteenth degree.
I’m against capital punishment. But the loudest voices against capital punishment are the ones shouting “FREE MUMIA!” and “FREE TOOKIE!” Seriously? Free a cop killer? Just because I don’t think he should be executed doesn’t mean I think he shouldn’t rot in jail for the rest of his miserable existence. And I don’t shed a tear for these people when they are executed – only for my country.
I guess I should thank God that these are really my only two major departures from conservatism. I don’t think I could take being an actual liberal.
Red Cloud on May 12, 2009 at 4:55 PM
Point well taken.
Question though: did you happen to come across any article critical of Miss CA that you thought was appropriate in tone?
radiofreevillage on May 12, 2009 at 4:55 PM
LOL! Classic. As if she was given a choice.
Did she pick the question?
Oh wait. She was supposed to lie and say what she was supposed to say and then just shut up.
Gregor on May 12, 2009 at 4:55 PM
This disgusting windbag saying that pageant contestants make him want to vomit….LOL. Those are chicks who wouldn’t pay him the time of day, the pathetic sack of shit.

So she’s free to express her opinion just so long as the Left is also free to take revenge? Wow. 1930’s Germany all over again.
stonemeister on May 12, 2009 at 4:56 PM
And there you have, victory for free speech, and boy
does it upset the Left!
The Left were banking on,that “Yes we can”,and with that,
Obama as President, that the mindset shall be that they are
mainstream in thinking,but there not,surprise!!
Hello, the Lefty’s wanted Miss California to lose her crown
over her moral stance on marriage, that was stealthly slip
ped in by operative, lefty activist Perez Hilton!!

Shuster in the morning when he wakes up, in front of the mirror:
blatantblue on May 12, 2009 at 4:57 PM
Well, he may have a point… Diane Sawyer was a beauty pageant winner.
Of course, we’d watch Julie Chen more if she looked like she did PRIOR to plastic surgery, wouldn’t we?
originalpechanga on May 12, 2009 at 4:57 PM
Annddd…having a network spend almost EVERY SINGLE DAY COVERING a story about somebody that shouldn’t be taken seriously????
The word Priceless doesn’t even come close !!
HarryStar on May 12, 2009 at 4:57 PM
So, serious question. Is this Shuster’s underhanded way of asking Perez Hilton out on a date or something?
Red Cloud on May 12, 2009 at 4:58 PM
The gay and secular fascists hold a beauty contest winner to a higher standard than Obama.
V15J on May 12, 2009 at 4:58 PM
I’m convinced that it is part of their psychiatric dysfunction. Perez Hilton called her a b*tch and wanted to call her a c*nt … precisely because he is aware of his own self-loathing. He can’t come to terms with why he would prefer another man, to her. And, he hates her for it … he hates himself for it.
OhEssYouCowboys on May 12, 2009 at 4:58 PM
We should show some compassion for Shuster. He is such a monumental genius that it’s painful for him to hear regular people express an opinion. Looking down from the rarefied atmosphere of his prodigious intellect, he sees normal people as existing simply to be taxed and to do as they’re told.
cruadin on May 12, 2009 at 4:59 PM
Is it true that Shuster and Perez Hilton are going to make a “2 men,1 cup” video?
roninacreage on May 12, 2009 at 4:59 PM
Well, you call people names every time the gay marriage issue comes up. This is just another manifestation of it. I’m sure the next time it comes up you’ll try bullying people into agreeing with you then, as well.
“homophobe, bigot, fundamentalist,” blah blah blah.
TTheoLogan on May 12, 2009 at 5:00 PM
Not that I can think of offhand, for the simple reason that her statement was so mild and substance-less — “I oppose gay marriage because that’s how I was raised, no offense” — that there’s nothing to base a critical article on. What would be a respectful counterargument? “Well, you weren’t raised right”?
Allahpundit on May 12, 2009 at 5:00 PM
Like anything broadcast on that network………..
Seven Percent Solution on May 12, 2009 at 5:00 PM
And that was our first clue the Donald made the right decision.
I think what really pisses Shuster off is that Miss Prejean speaks like an intelligent young woman. The label he’s determined to use just doesn’t apply. He knows it. That pisses him off.
And it really is noble of him to whine about how “superficial” and “dumb” these pagent contestents are. If only they could be super smart like a professional news reader. When I think intellect, believe me, professional news readers are the last thing that come to my mind. Afterall, dopes like Shuster are what made the Ron Bergundy character work so well.
Zetterson on May 12, 2009 at 5:00 PM
Yep, so superficial, with nothing useful to say — sounds like the perfect topic for MSNBC, the nutjob network!
littleguy on May 12, 2009 at 5:01 PM
Objective television journalism at its finest. At the “roast” they all sounded like 13 year old girls at a Hannah Montana concert. Shuster still does. What a loser.
kingsjester on May 12, 2009 at 5:01 PM
That’s next after gay marriage – a fight for the right for gays to procreate without being forced by mean old conservatives to have the right plumbing first.
“Here! I– I’ve got an idea. Suppose you agree that he can’t actually have babies, not having a womb, which is nobody’s fault, not even the Romans’, but that he can have the right to have babies.”
Daggett on May 12, 2009 at 5:01 PM
Counter-question: since when did beauty-pageant contestants get the “critical article” treatment? Vanessa Williams, yeah. But that was for a skin-magazine spread.
ddrintn on May 12, 2009 at 5:01 PM
These left-wingers hate Christians. I’d pay to see Shuster–or any lefty–go on a rant about how backward and stupid Christians are then see Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton respond (preferably in the same
roomelevator).perroviejo on May 12, 2009 at 5:02 PM
No surprise. Vomit party, MSNBC makes me ill.
maverick muse on May 12, 2009 at 5:02 PM
The issue here isn’t the question or the answer, it is the attempt to tear this young lady apart for not giving the answer that they want. You can disagree with her answer J/B but have to support her right to it.

America is still RIGHT,despite the Lefty MSM attempts!!
canopfor on May 12, 2009 at 5:02 PM
She had a choice…As I said, she answered that question in an honest, tactful way. I may disagree with her, but she did the right thing the right way. Honestly, to even be taking about this STILL…a dang question asked at a dang beauty pageant fer cripes sake…is bordering on ridiculous by now.
She could have very simply said something like “I gave my answer, and that’s that” and let it go. But she wanted that spotlight. And she got it, the good and the bad.
So in that sense, I don’t feel sorry for her. I know, that makes me a gay nazi monster!
JetBoy on May 12, 2009 at 5:03 PM
Hey, at least Shuster didn’t call her the c-word. That sort of self-discipline is why he’s an MSNBC host in the first place…
jon1979 on May 12, 2009 at 5:04 PM
I’ve said multiple times…I do support her right to her answer. I have never had a problem with it.
JetBoy on May 12, 2009 at 5:04 PM
Personally, I think the White House Correspondents dinner is the most superficial thing, but that’s just me.
ctmom on May 12, 2009 at 5:04 PM
Funny this Shuster guy would “twitter” to Perez Hilton with words of praise immediately after his “b**ch” and “c**t” rants, and not realize of Perez had just kept his damn mouth shut that this issue would have died and Prejean would remain an unknown. Shuster is disgusted because this has totally back-fired on the left. Perez has set the gay marriage movement BACK and that’s what makes Shuster want to vomit.

TexasJew on May 12, 2009 at 5:07 PM
Really? Seriously? You think? You’re more of a mess than I originally suspected if you believe she “had a choice” of turning down that spotlight.
She simply took the spotlight that was forced upon her and turned it into something positive.
Well, “positive” for the majority of Americans anyway. You wouldn’t get that part of it.
Gregor on May 12, 2009 at 5:07 PM
Shuster is such a weasel.
KittyLowrey on May 12, 2009 at 5:08 PM
OK, so it’s not about the tone. It’s that in your judgment any opposition on substance is over the top.
The counter-argument is that anybody whose hobby of choice is to parade in front of others in bikini, and whose idea of improving oneself was to get breast implants is in no position to oppose gay marriage, which is almost definitionally based on moral grounds.
Breast implants + walking around naked = please shut up about others’ lifestyle. What’s so extreme about that? Seriously.
radiofreevillage on May 12, 2009 at 5:08 PM
I’m uncomfortable with the new lefty meme that all people in a certain occupation don’t deserve to be listened to.
1) If she said she was FOR gay marriage, they would be telling all of us to listen to this heartfelt, down home, honest woman.
2) Most of the beauty contestants have other life goals. From wikipedia, we learn the following about Miss Prejean:
Maybe it’s just me, but anyone that gives that much of their time toward people less fortunate then them…
…certainly deserve to be listened to.
And the one thing I’m really perplexed about (other than the lack of criticism thrown Perez “Copyright? What’s a Copyright?” Hilton’s way)…
…is why there isn’t or hasn’t been a backlash WITHIN the gay community against all these people attacking Miss Prejean and setting back the gay rights movement.
Religious_Zealot on May 12, 2009 at 5:08 PM
All of this happened, because Gloria Allred wasn’t on the pageant panel.
She would’ve supported Miss California.

ddrintn on May 12, 2009 at 5:09 PM
Except it’s not just the left, it’s the press, dragging out very personal things about her past to humiliate her.
You don’t need to tell us or Carrie. Tell the press, the one that can’t get enough of trashing her, even over things she has no control over such as her parents’ divorce. She’s not the one creating news about her. She’s done nothing to keep this story in the news.
If she wanted to do so, all she would have needed to do was respond bitterly to Hilton, thus escalating some kind of war. She didn’t. She did pretty much what you say you want her to do, said she answered the question and only added that she has no ill feelings towards Hilton.
That’s all she’s done. Any decent person would have acted just as she has.

You’re sounding no different than leftists. If you don’t agree with somebody you want them to just shut up. How about you shut up and give up what you believe for a change? Not that I think that’s fair or right but that’s the medicine you’re trying to feed.

He is just mad because he wasn’t part of the Miss America Pageant. Little Queer.
romanianhacker on May 12, 2009 at 5:11 PM
The only thing I blame her for is that she put herself, or at a minimum accepter her fame on this, in the spotlight by her own accord. The lefties didn’t just pick her name at random out of the phone book.
And honestly…what makes so many so mad over this. Is it really how Prejean is some victim? Or is it simply an argument over gay marriage in general?
JetBoy on May 12, 2009 at 5:11 PM
Is she running for office?
ddrintn on May 12, 2009 at 5:12 PM
Not a monster, just firing at the wrong target IMO. I don’t feel sorry for her, either — fame, fortune, the respect of millions. I don’t see a downside — that would have come had she crumbled under the pressure. What’s sad is how Hilton and his buds make others look bad by association and how they still can’t seem to understand what a loser all of this is for them.
