The obligatory “Palin lands presumably massive book deal” post

posted at 9:26 pm on May 12, 2009 by Allahpundit

No word on how much, but she had a top D.C. agent working on it and he scored a sufficiently sweet offer from Harper Collins that they didn’t bother with competing bids. No need to worry about her straining under the weight of those legal bills anymore. The only question is how many days before the book is released will Palinites begin lining up outside Barnes & Noble.

The inevitable lefty take will be snarky feigned surprise that she’s capable of even reading a book, let alone writing one, the first bare whiff of which you can smell at the tail end of the AP’s report:

Burnham said Palin did not submit any writing samples when she met with HarperCollins executives in Washington, earlier this year. She will work with a collaborator, to be determined.

“She’s obviously going to be engaged in the whole process of the book,” said Burnham, adding that the role of the collaborator would depend on who was chosen.

“Every word of the book will be her words,” Barnett said…

Palin has never written a book and her critics, noting her disjointed CBS interviews with Katie Couric, have questioned whether she could. Two years ago, Palin told PBS’ Charlie Rose that her favorite writers were C.S. Lewis (“very, very deep”) and a Runner’s World columnist, Dr. George Sheehan. Asked Tuesday about her reading, Palin mentioned that she “really enjoyed” Katharine Graham’s Pulitzer Prize-winning “Personal History” and cited works by Obama, McCain and Bill Clinton, whose “My Life” she read “just recently.”

I like the gratuitous quote about her read on Lewis’s depth, as if to underscore the author’s opinion that she’s a moron. Say, do national celebrities typically have to submit writing samples when they’re being wooed for multimillion-dollar book offers? If not, why bring it up?

ADN says she’ll give a portion of the proceeds to charity. Sounds like there’ll be plenty of bio to please fans — the publisher emphasized that her lifestyle is “unpretentious” — but the real money lies in how willing she is to settle scores from the campaign. I’m thinking … not very. She’s never badmouthed McCain and has studiously avoided naming the aides who were sniping anonymously at her last winter. Maybe Harper Collins made her promise up front to deliver the goods?

I too find it ridiculous the “very, very deep” snark in the AP story regarding CS Lewis.

Nope. She’s probably thinking of the arguments against Philosophical Naturalism he made in chapters two and three in the book Miracles. She’s probably referring to the arguments Lewis made concerning the issue of the Problem of Evil in his book the Problem of Pain. Or maybe his lecture on Why I’m not a Pacifist. Or maybe his lecture Learning in War Time. Maybe his anthropology in his book The Abolition of Man, wherein he discusses why Coolidge valued the tourist who called the waterfall “sublime” rather than “pretty”, and why choosing the latter renders a kind of society that houses what he called “trousered apes” and “men without chests”. Or maybe she was referring to his incredible works on literature and poetry. Or maybe she was talking about his best lecture, in my opinion, Weight of Glory.

Take this bit from Lewis for example:

The final state is come when Man by eugenics, by pre-natal conditioning, and by an education and propaganda based on a perfect applied psychology has obtained full control over himself. Human nature will be the last part of Nature to surrender to Man…. We shall have ‘taken the thread of life out of the hand of Clotho’ and be henceforth free to make our species whatever we wish it to be. … But who, precisely, will have won it? For the power of Man to make himself what he pleases means, as we have seen, the power of some men to make other men what they please.

An AP reporter couldn’t reconstruct a C.S. Lewis argument if you wrote it down for him and numbered the points in block letters on notecards.

These people with their absolute intellectual superficiality kill me. They think no one else ever had a Philosophy 101 course and read a few paragraphs from Aristotle’s Politics or Plato’s Republic; and that having heard of Lacan or Foucault puts one in a special club.

Few of the memorable and enduring philosophers of the Western tradition would have disdained C.S. Lewis. Unlike, say, George Bernard Shaw, he made coherent and parsable metaphysical arguments. Someone like Hume or Kant would have found points of profound disagreement with Lewis — but would have thought Foucault was just inane.

Do you think NBC would say, “We have illegal alien Juan here who bought 2 copies of Palin’s book and then called us up” ???

First of all, buying two copies won’t be enough. I’m talking like the Paulians did — five or ten, etc.

10 copies =$270 directly into her purse??? DUDE!

Upstater85 on May 12, 2009 at 9:56 PM

No. But the royalties from that $270 in sales would probably be a nice dinner.

amerpundit on May 12, 2009 at 9:59 PM

She should title it: The Audacity of Real Life.

29Victor on May 12, 2009 at 9:54 PM

She should name it: Not A Boring White Guy

An AP reporter couldn’t reconstruct a C.S. Lewis argument if you wrote it down for him and numbered the points in block letters on notecards.

J.E. Dyer on May 12, 2009 at 9:58 PM

Yeah, you can just about hear the condescending snort to go along with “Eewwwww, that’s the stuff evangelicals read…”

ddrintn on May 12, 2009 at 10:01 PM

The AP article was definitely snarky. I wonder what’s going on with them. Where are the editors?

OK, here we go “We have illegal alien Juan here who bought 5 copies of Palin’s book and then called us up”

No. But the royalties from that $270 in sales would probably be a nice dinner.

amerpundit on May 12, 2009 at 9:59 PM

And when you say nice dinner do you mean family lunch picnic?

Upstater85 on May 12, 2009 at 10:01 PM

Perhaps Mere Christianity or The Problem of Pain?

I’ll posit that if Goldratt is correct, in that one tends to learn far more deeply via Socratic Method than by direct information exchange (see his book, The Goal), then a reader would do much better to take in Lewis’ fiction, if one had to choose between the fiction writings and the non-fiction ones.

Liberals may hate Sarah for a number of reasons generally, but feminists despise her specifically for the dual “sins” of standing against abortion, and in (very publicly) raising a child who was born with a genetic disorder that, according to some sources, would face abortion in 9 out of 10 instances.

Case in point: NARAL’s collective “Stand By Your Man” moments at every point where BJ was accused of rape. They would have sacrificed a thousand women to BJ’s libido if it meant keeping their man around to place abortion-friendly SCOTUS nominees.

Effete eastern establishment “Republicans” cannot stand Sarah because she outshined Mac from the moment she stepped onto the stage at the RNC convention. He was the tired, go-along-to-get-along Ford Republican, and by comparison, she was the principled straight-talker. The moment Sarah began talking, Johnny Mac must have had flashbacks to 1976 when Reagan was asked to speak just after the party had just confirmed Ford as the nominee.

Buyer’s remorse, indeed.

“It is in Man’s power to treat himself as a mere ‘natural object’ and his own judgements of value as raw material for scientific manipulation to alter at will. The objection to his doing so does not lie in the fact that this point of view (like one’s first day in a dissecting room) is painful and shocking till we grow used to it. . . . The real objection is that if man chooses to treat himself as raw material, raw material he will be: not raw material to be manipulated, as he fondly imagined, by himself, but by mere appetite, that is, mere Nature, in the person of his de-humanized Conditioners. . . . Either we are rational spirit obliged for ever to obey the absolute values of the Tao [natural law], or else we are mere nature to be kneaded and cut into new shapes for the pleasures of masters who must, by hypothesis, have no motive but their own ‘natural’ impulses. Only the Tao provides a common human law of action which can over-arch rulers and ruled alike. A dogmatic belief in objective value is necessary to the very idea of a rule which is not tyranny or an obedience which is not slavery. . . . The process which, if not checked, will abolish Man goes on apace among Communists and Democrats no less than among Fascists. The methods may (at first) differ in brutality. But many a mild-eyed scientist in pince-nez, many a popular dramatist, many an amateur philosopher in our midst, means in the long run just the same as the Nazi rulers of Germany.”

Lewis.

I’m listing all these, not to defend Lewis’s intellectual heft, but Palin’s. If she’s reading Lewis, she’s doing just fine, and has far more intellect than those whose noses are pressed into the pages of books about Che.

Dude, are you kidding? I can’t wait to read about that one time Meghan ran into that one guy from The Real World and was like, “Oh, my god, you’re such a bitch to that one girl”, and he was all like, “Are you John McCain’s daughter?”, and she was like, “Yeah, wanna play beer pong?”
