British pol destroys BBC hack: “How much are you paid?”

Via JWF, a shot of video whiskey to end a long day. The topic is the scandal that’s exploding in the UK over members of Parliament using public money to pay personal expenses — a proper subject for journalistic inquiry, to be sure, but not one well suited to a news outfit that’s wholly funded by taxpayer dollars and which has itself been known to crap money away on nonsense and malfeasance. The MP here takes it a step further, though: Since everyone’s suddenly so interested in wasting public funds, let’s find out how much our very, very important — and state-supported — BBC anchors are bringing home each year. If ever you’ve bristled at media entitlement and egotism, ahem, you’ll enjoy this.

Blowback

Let me try my hand at writing with a British accent: smashing exchange, quite brilliant.

Let’s call this a shot over the bow for the media bailout Obama is surely planning. You take the government funds, you better be ready to open your books for public scrutiny. I can only imagine the hay the anti-bailout crowd will make with FOIA access to all those media salaries and expenses.

Rational Thought on May 13, 2009 at 7:06 AM

Well done. This self-important dyed-blond nitwit ranting some lecture on the evils of wasting tax money while their socialist state pays her salary for reading news. Sod off, swampy.

Jaibones on May 13, 2009 at 7:44 AM

That bimbette only makes 92K pounds…that’s about $150K. Katie Couric makes $150k that much a week.

Hey Katie, still believe in the UK/Euro model now beatch?

angryed on May 13, 2009 at 7:59 AM

With socialized media, Obama pays less than the broke newspapers the media leaves. I liked his audacity to put her in her place.

Can we get this guy to run the Repulican party or at hold seminars like Gen. Racist Powell did?

Better yet if he was born in Hawaii can we run him for Prez?

jarhead0311 on May 13, 2009 at 8:45 AM

You need to see more of that, telling these left wing news idiots where to get off! To bad there are not more people like that in England, and this country with that kind of balls!

Confederate on May 13, 2009 at 8:59 AM

Not enough good words for him. Where are the all the “pols with balls” around here?

Mr. Grump on May 13, 2009 at 9:00 AM

If I’m not mistaken Katie makes about thirty million a year according to Parade magazine.

mixplix on May 13, 2009 at 9:17 AM

Very cool. I’m not sure what the guys politics are but I instantly like him.
The brits seem very good at this sort of verbal warfare sometime.

Meanwhile our talent pool seems to have graduated from Deer in the Headlights Tech.

I’ve NEVER seen an anchor baited like this.

I can’t believe she was reeled in.

Wow.

To everyone cheering Lord Foulkes on, please read this:

http://iaindale.blogspot.com/2009/05/george-foulkes-is-ultimate-political.html

Incidentally, he’s not an MP, he’s an MSP and a peer but as you can see, this means he can claim allowances twice.

SamTrev on May 13, 2009 at 9:38 AM

I got a heatflash from that video

wildweasel on May 13, 2009 at 9:38 AM

The line of the century. “I am sorry for interrupting”, (Response), “No you’re not sorry that what you get paid to do”.

It is about time someone opened the door, and slam it.

MSGTAS on May 13, 2009 at 10:04 AM

Ugly Irish (or Welsh?) MP…FTW!

bluelightbrigade on May 13, 2009 at 10:05 AM

I still can’t believe she gave out her salary info on TV.

What a f***tard.

bluelightbrigade on May 13, 2009 at 10:13 AM

I think everyone is missing the real point here. For how much I enjoy seeing a BBC anchor get reemed, the story of MPs spending government money for personal expenses is what should be discussed.

This MP is trying to distract from the issue of them using government money for personal expenses by turning the discussion on how much the anchor makes from a publicly funded institution. Does nobody here on HA care that these MPs are being unethical?

This would be no different than Charlie Rangle going on PBS and start complaining how much Charlie Rose, Jim Lehrer, or Tavis Smalley make if they questioned his ethics.

I hate the BBC, but in this case, they are legitimately uncovering ethics issues by the Liberal Labour Party.

DoS_Conservative on May 13, 2009 at 10:54 AM

“Journalist” vs. Politician.

Confusion.

Don’t…know…whose…side…to…be…on…

Must…process…ERROR…ERROR…ERROR

Pilgrimsarbour on May 13, 2009 at 10:54 AM

As others have stated what the MP’s have been doing is so shocking that it is funny.

The BBC is more regulated unlike MP’s who ’self’ regulate.
It is not a left/right issue like everything seems to be in the U.S.

Some have had tax payer money to maintain their swimming pool, even their moat?!

We have paid for the repair of a water pipe on someone’s tennis court.
Horse manure, even a 89p bath plug ,£7,000 for a garden including hedge cutting for a ‘helipad’.
I’ll be here all day if i start telling you what they have been up to with property.

Changing the subject and going for this anchor and the BBC isn’t good enough.

Everybody is furious about this. So much so, it has the ability to bring down Gordon Brown .

mags on May 13, 2009 at 11:04 AM

One more thing. The Bankers that the government has bailed out and attacked about their misuse of tax payers money are pissing themselves laughing.

mags on May 13, 2009 at 11:08 AM

Please maintain focus.

This is one of those wars where you want both sides to lose.

“Corrupt Pol vs Crappy BBC Anchor”.

But the corrupt Pol is *stealing* money from his citizens.

The Crappy BBC Anchor is not doing anything illegal or even immoral. She is just doing her job badly. That is NOT THE SAME AS STEALING.

Look to Singapore for judicial guidance on this. This Pol should be publicly caned.

But I have to admit…it is fun to see the Anchor get smacked. :)

jlibson on May 13, 2009 at 3:24 PM

Setting aside the legitimate issue of who is more corrupt in this debate; the demonstrably correct procedure by the pol has been lost on our own Republican pols,i.e., DO NOT LET THE MEDIA DICTATE THE TERMS OF THE DEBATE!

Republicans are like sheep waiting to be sheared, this guy (corrupt as he probably is) was not going to go quietly. He came with fire in his eyes, and, you know what, that does get the publics attention. Right or wrong, people tend to favor a fighter over an appeaser. That is why, though he is wrong on almost every issue, I admire Christopher Hitchens – he will fight!

Are you listening Mr. Steele?

Joe Pyne on May 13, 2009 at 4:23 PM

People here are getting the BBC’s role in the u.k mostly wrong.
To suggest that it is just a mouth piece for the government.
misses the point.
He is a labour peer, so why would they challenge him?
Tony Blair complained that they were too harsh with him.

We went to war with a left wing government so wouldn’t we all of loved it, if the BBC is the voice of the state?

The BBC covers a wide range of things. The news is just one small part.
The BBC really doesn’t have the ability to brain wash us.

It covers film’s and tv programm’e that they sell , and money goes back into it.

The office, dancing with the stars even the teletubbies are
BBC.There are no commercial ads on the BBC.
We can actually watch TV including sport events without out being interrupted.

It is like everyone being a stakeholder,we moan and moan
about it ,as we do about the weather.

I think hotair in it’s haste to rubbish the BBC, has missed the real issues of this story.
