Gibbs on Sykes: On second thought, 9/11 isn’t an appropriate subject for humor

posted at 4:55 pm on May 11, 2009 by Allahpundit

Isn’t it this guy’s job to convey Obama’s thinking to the media? Then how to explain this answer when we have video proof of The One merrily yukking it up during Sykes’s offending bit? Good lord, even Keith Olbermann thought it was “probably” in bad taste, which, coming from him about a fellow lefty, is tantamount to nuclear-hot outrage.

Ben Shapiro said all that needs to be said about the fundamental cowardice of dumping on Republicans at Obama’s big debutante ball:

Wanda Sykes, by contrast, is the most gutless and feckless performer ever to grace the White House Correspondents Dinner.

Sykes, for those who haven’t seen her stellar work in gems like CondomNation, Brother Bear 2, and Over the Hedge, is a militant lesbian with a grating voice and an obnoxious strut. She recently proclaimed during the California Prop. 8 debate that “Everybody that knows me personally, they know I’m gay … Now, I gotta get in their face. I’m proud to be a woman. I’m proud to be a black woman, and I’m proud to be gay.”

Well, apparently she’s not so proud to be gay. Because when given the opportunity to make jokes about the nation’s leading proponent of opposite-sex marriage, President Barack Obama, she said precisely nothing. Instead, she chose to gently stroke his ego with jokes about his pecs, his dog, and his basketball skills.

Eh, this is Clinton redux: Just as feminist outrage was muted then in the interest of serving the Democratic power structure, so is gay outrage muted now. In the great taxonomy of political identities, “Democrat” — the stamp of virtuous intentions — still trumps all.

I got into an argument with a friend that is hellbent on loving Barack Obama. She calls republicans bigots, heartless because we don’t nationalization and socialized healthcare, or same sex marriage.
I explained to her, why yes, I am a bigot. I want the government out of my house, my bedroom, and my life. I want lower taxes, smaller government, and I want our country to follow the constitution.
Oh, and one more thing. Your love, Barack Obama doesn’t believe in gay marriage either.

Wander Sykes is a crack ho. Enough said.

In the great taxonomy of political identities, “Democrat” — the stamp of virtuous intentions — still trumps all.

Isn’t that the truth. I don’t think anyone really believes he’s anti gay may marriage, though. I used to work with a lesbian who was a HUGE supporter of his, the same one who cried a couple years prior when VA passed the consitutional amendment banning gay marriage. SHe thinks he was just saying he was agianst it-gasp!-to get elected. He’ll find a change of heart in his second term, should that happen…

Well there is good reason. Most people would say “WHO???”

You can watch the wheels turning in his head buying himself time by talking about how guests get booked and using “filler” words until he says that some topics aren’t funny(or however he worded it).

Gibbs has the nerve to try to pass the buck, when his job is to speak for the President.

I’m surprised Gibbs response wasn’t something like:

Gibbs: The president is not, um, familiar with the remarks. He was thinking about pressing matters of State. As soon as the video is made available, um, we’ll review it comment on it, uh, then. It just wouldn’t be appropriate to comment on this at this time. The president is a busy man and is working for the American people to fix the economy we inherited from the previous administration. Millions have lost their jobs due to the ummm, mishandling of our economy the last 8 years. People are hurting. I’m hurting. You’re hurting. We’re all hurting. Have you seen the new budget projections? 8 years of failed policies won’t turn around in a day. Ummm, as we invest in our future, the Secretary of the Treasury, Tim Geitner, is currently reviewing where we can make additional cuts and stop all the tax cheating corporations from banking offshore.

Does that answer your question?

This is so obviously unfair to the gay movement that only those who don’t think about the point will be hoodwinked by this argument. The reason that the gay Democrats don’t hold Obama’s stance against him has already been discussed at Hotair. We all, gays and Hot Air readers, know that Obama’s opposition to gay marriage is strategic, and will go disappear once the polling supports its disappearance. There are many things to complain about the gay movement like the sometimes fascism about dissent and the hate crimes laws. But not complaining about a covert supporter being political isn’t one of them. It’s simple common sense on their behalf.

Which group in CA was instrumental in the passing of Prop 8? Which group in DC did mayor McCrack say would riot if Same Sex Marriage was legalized in DC? Which group, overwehlmingly, voted for Obama because of his skin color?

Obama said that he was against SSM during the Presidential Campaign.

Why isn’t the RNC using this against Obama? Can he afford to alienate the group discribed above? Hell No!!

Push SSM onto the front page and make Obama take a stand on it. He would either lose the Black vote or the Gay vote.

Obama hates white people, and is turning the country into a socialist state. He is trampling on private property rights, and transferring wealth from those he hates to those he likes. He is also harming our traditional allies and making friends with our enemies.

Yet you think that saying he likes gay marriage will somehow turn people against him. You may be a so-called gay, but it ‘aint all that.

JiangxiDad on May 11, 2009 at 5:47 PM

if you think bambi would lose the black vote for supporting gay marriage, you are sadly mistaken. the blacks i know are vehemently, religously opposed to abortion. they will not believe anything i tell them about his pro-infanticide votes. not even when i show them the statues & the votes (they say that is just “white” men accusing obama of that).

kelley in virginia on May 11, 2009 at 5:51 PM

On first thought, Gibbs is an amateur, Obama is a dangerously arrogant & ignorant fool and Sykes is perhaps the finest argument for retroactive birth control. If this is Obama’s idea of entertainment then lets not bother with legislation regarding Hate Speech, Hate Crimes or any sense of decorum at any White House Function. The Ghetto Punk Presidency in full bloom.

After watching the video, it resembled a street corner scene in Haiti after the food rations were handed out and cheap bottles of wine were passed around before the cockfights.

No Class whatsoever.

old trooper2 on May 11, 2009 at 5:54 PM

So Gibbs is having a banner week. First he has to reinterpret Biden’s egregious swine flu panic statements. Then he has to reinterpret Obama’s laughing at a comic wishing death on an adversary and calling that adversary a terrorist, when in fact the last thing Rush would ever have done is killed any innocent american or fly a plane into a trade center tower or into any military or government installation. If Sykes wanted to speak truth to power, when she cited Limbaugh’s misquoted statement, she might have mentioned Carville’s similar statement on 9/11/01, and then asked the audience, which of those men were terrorists? And why did the democraps bury Carville’s statement but trumpet a false version of Rush’s statement?
Why no mention of the obsequious bow to Saudi royalty? Was there nothing humorous in that? Or Obama’s getting locked out of the Oval Office? Is Obama so thin skinned that he cannot take any needling or hard humor at his expense?

And that’s not including the 9/11 references that were so full of laughs that Obama could barely contain his glee.

So what if Rush is an entertainment figure? He’s a citizen and not directly involved in politics. The 9/11 remark was just crass and vile. I don’t even care that Sykes said the things she did. She’s an idiot. I don’t expect more from her. But to have the POTUS up there giggling along was disgusting.

After watching the video, it resembled a street corner scene in Haiti after the food rations were handed out and cheap bottles of wine were passed around before the cockfights.

No Class whatsoever.

The classiest members of the GOP like William Buckley’s son and Peggy Noonan preferred Obama to Palin. And for better and for worse, Obama has the class of a college professor.

thuja on May 11, 2009 at 6:00 PM

Let me try that again…

Most telling comment during the WH Correspondent’s Dinner:

Obama:
“Most of you supported me… You ALL voted for me…”

Too true.

Just for that here’s your punishment…

I swear this thread is becoming like 9th grade history assignment in Pueblo, Colorado.

Maybe this belongs on the Meg Mac thread, but she sure does look VERY “plus-size” in that Daily News picture! She’s probably more of a heavyweight than her Dad–physically if not politically.

No tickie, no shirtie–on second thought, she should keep her shirt on.

Thanks for the laugh. Especially the part about college professors having “class”.

Of course, O’bama was the Editor of the Harvard Law Review, but made history by being the first-ever editor to never write an article for that publication.

I can’t see the video, but did Gibba just throw President Obama under the bus? Can the bus work like that?

BadgerHawk on May 11, 2009 at 5:05 PM

+100

Breaking. Overturned bus on Pennsylvania Avenue.

That’s a keeper.

RushBaby on May 11, 2009 at 6:05 PM

So, then, Obama wasn’t REALLY laughing at Sykes’ joke about 9/11? Or was the truth…he was laughing on the outside, but crying on the inside?

Again w/the Obama/Palin references. Palin wasn’t running for President, doofus. So if Jr. Buckley and Peggny Noonan voted for O w/out considering the top of the ticket on the R side was a decorated war vet w/40 yrs. of service to his country, plenty of legislation under his belt, great understanding of world geopolitical issues and experience out the wazoo compared to Obama, then they are just SEXIST elitists, who got exactly what they deserved. Higher taxes and a set of complete gaffe-prone morons for president & VP. And just whom considers them classy?

As for Obama having the class of a college professor? Please. Whatever that means…

I wonder what Chrissy Buckley et al think of Obambi now?
