California accuses Obama of allowing SEIU dictate stimulus policy

Only a couple of months ago, these two titans of politics embraced each other on the dais.  Arnold Schwarzenegger pronounced Barack Obama’s intellect and philosophy “beautiful,” and Obama called the Governator an “innovator” in return.  Some of us wondered whether they’d get a room, politically speaking, but as it turns out, there have been allegations of cheating in this romance.  Schwarzenegger’s administration accused the Obama White House of sharing confidences with another sweetheart when it assumed their couple counseling session would remain private.

Can’t someone get these two kids together again?

Officials in the governor’s office say a politically powerful union may have had inappropriate influence over the Obama administration’s decision to withhold billions of dollars in federal stimulus money from California if the state does not reverse a scheduled wage cut for the labor group’s workers.

The officials say they are particularly troubled that the Service Employees International Union, which lobbied the federal government to step in, was included in a conference call in which state and federal officials reviewed the wage cut and the terms of the stimulus package.

California Secretary of Health and Human Services Kim Belshe said she could not recall another instance in which the federal government invited a significant stakeholder group into such government-to-government negotiations.

“The involvement of a stakeholder in this kind of state-federal deliberative process is unusual at best,” she said. “This was really atypical and outside any norm I am familiar with.”

In addition to several state and federal officials, participants in the April 15 conference call included an SEIU associate general counsel in Washington, a lobbyist for SEIU in California and a representative from SEIU’s policy staff in California, according to a list provided by the Schwarzenegger administration.

It has become clear that the Obama administration has exerted influence on behalf of Big Labor in every setting it can.  They forced Chrysler bondholders to acquiesce to a scheme where they got 30 cents on the dollar, while the UAW wound up with a majority of Chrysler despite owning no stake in Chrysler beforehand.  They’re pushing a similar deal with GM, using the TARP money to dictate an outcome for the unions that would have made no economic sense at all in a regular bankruptcy proceeding.

If California’s allegations are correct, however, this is even more of a blatant payoff for the Obama labor constituency.  The SEIU should have had no place in negotiations between California and the White House on stimulus spending.  Their inclusion makes the stimulus bill an explicit political patronage slush fund, given to those states who dance to the White House tune.

Actually, that’s not entirely accurate.  It’s the Labor tune to which they’ll have to dance, and everyone else who comes into contact with the Obama White House.  It’s the Chicago Way instead of the Beltway these days.  If Arnold wants to hang out with the “beautiful” people, he’d better learn the new rules.

WashJeff on May 11, 2009 at 1:53 PM

What the State of California needs to do is open the state budget to viewing by the voters. They (the state) say there isn’t anything left to cut, and taxes will have to be raised or services will be lost. There is plenty of room for cuts in the budget without sacrificing real services. Arnold and his lefty cronies just don’t want to cut entitlements and redundant and useless social services. It would be to big a blow to their egos to know their social engineering doesn’t work. If people knew all the lunacy they are supporting (through high taxes); The Tea Parties would look like recess in comparison.

Obama is a tyrant.

Lets just come right out and say it.

Everything that the left has accused George W. Bush of being, Obama actually is.

And when anyone dares to call them on it- like David Frum pointing out that Obama has essentially circumvented the bankruptcy laws by extra legal means (which in a sane world would be criminal and impeachable)- how does the left respond?

It’s all Bush’s fault. He’s the criminal. Obama is just trying to fix what Bush messed up.

What exactly did Bush do to create the problems at Chrysler?

Even if you accept the accusations against Bush (which I don’t- they are founded on paranoid delusions) how does that justify Obama violating bankruptcy law by fiat? And Ex-Post facto even.

Obama is engaging in tyranny. Openly and blatantly.

He’s getting away with it because no one is calling him on it, and everyone keeps thinking to himself- it’s not possible.

Sackett on May 11, 2009 at 1:56 PM

California is a peculiar state. Perhaps because of the perennial earthquakes and other disasters, it tends to edge closer and closer to the precipice…..and then, tip over.

If the “make it easier to raise tax” initiatives fail, we may just be at one of those tipping points. There are a lot of people who have just had it with public sector unions, and there could be a heavy backlash from this sort of hubristic maneuver.

Barry had a similar love-fest once when he introduced Kwame Kilpatrick at a function. They hugged enthusiastically and Obama waxed rhapsodic about what a fabulous mayor Kwame was. Of course, that was before Kwame was indicted for fraud, perjury, etc., and run out of office in disgrace.

But that doesn’t mean we should question Obama’s judgment. After all, this was the same guy who decided that Joe Biden was clearly the most qualified individual in the country for the position of Vice President . . . . oh, wait . . . .

I would be willing to bet obama has no clue that this would go back to the republicans in the cal legislature – that 2/3rd majority req for new taxes!

The only way out is for the dems to cut something else in parallel with this increase – so they are stuck too!

The Cal budget is so out of whack they will need to re-negotiate with all of the unions before they are done. In fact, there were other unions that took some ‘hits’ already. I wonder if those are covered by this ‘ruling’ as well?

There is also a requirement buried in the stimulus on the school funds as well – so while cal is ’slated to receive’ 12 billion for schools, the requirement is that school funding NOT be cut at the local level – so that one is gummed up as well!

We got a nice election on the 19th here in Cal, get the popcorn popping!

To me, it’s bad enough that the Feds are telling California what they can and can’t cut. It’s worse that the SEIU is sitting in at those meetings. And it’s still worse that SEIU employees will end up getting screwed, as instead of a $2/hour pay cut, many will end up being laid off.

Ahnold,
The Department of Health phoned. Obummer gave you the clap.

bloviator on May 11, 2009 at 2:51 PM

What will it take for people to wake up?

The current administration has used the “loans” given to Chrysler and GM as an excuse to turn these companies over to the UAW (which in turn will make large contributions to the Democrats) and fire CEOs.

The current administration has used the TARP money given forced on banks to control the banks, shift the balance of power in the Board room and limit executive compensation.

Now the current administration is using the leverage of Stimulus funds to force California to bend to the Federal will and cancel planned salary cuts to SEIU members (who also give big bucks to the Democrats). Why are people surprised by this?

The Governors of all 50 States (or is that 57?) should be trembling and wondering what the Federal Government is going to try to force them to do once they are sufficiently dependent upon the Stimulus money. How long before Obama suggests that certain Governors ought to resign?

Several Governors have been applauded on HA and elsewhere in the conservative media for refusing to accept some of the Stimulus money. Ultimately this may not make any difference.

It is probably too late, but I would make the following suggestion and welcome the thoughts of HA readers:

I would strongly encourage all Governors and State legislatures to refuse all Stimulus funds not yet received and to immediately return any funds already received. And at the same time I would encourage Governors and State Legislatures to pass legislation declaring their intention to use “nullification” to set aside any future Federal tax increases on the citizens of their State that will inevitably be passed by Congress to cover the cost of the Democrats deficit spending. I would then encourage them to do what most ordinary Americans have to do and that is to learn to live within their means.

If a State should want to return the Stimulus money and the current Administration tries what they did to the banks when they refused to allow them to repay TARP money, then the State legislature should pass legislation giving the Federal Government 30 days to accept repayment or give up all right to any future repayment through increased taxes and all rights to how the State uses the funds.

The current Administration’s use of intimidation and threats to get its way reminds me of a humorous commercial for a fictitious loan shark company:

Fed-Gov River Finance. We have representatives conveniently located on street corners throughout America. When you need money, think of Fed-Gov. And when it’s time to repay, think of the River.

And the Speaker, of course, could have been misinformed, or not informed, or her assistant might have mentioned it, or perhaps not. Perhaps the fault lies with no one. Maybe there isn’t any intention at all, on anyone’s part. Maybe it’s all a big harmless mix-up, no harm, no foul.

Were you on Bill Clinton’s legal team during the Lewinsky deposition? If you’re not careful, you could end up with a reputation not as the resident HA conscience, but as it’s jester.

If Hussein al-Chicago cud milk all he can from Kali-for-na, before it spoils, he may be ranciding off to curdle other states Unions.

OK, I think that covers all the cow tipping jokes.

In actuality, the California Unions may all just go on a Blue Flu vacation. Work slowdowns, traffic violations not getting police attention, slow to arrive firetrucks or ambulances. You know the drill.

Even Holywood would refuse to cross picket lines. What a shame.

I’m still glowing from the Obama bread and the Obama Circus over the weekend.

Funny you say that, this weekend I went to see the UniverSoul Circus, which is an ethnic-centric circus with African, Chinese, and Caribbean circus acts. Pretty good show… but it was an Obama love fest. Several acts began with montages of Obama speeches on the background video screen.

The missing link here is SDS/Weathermen.The SEIU leadership is filled with these guys. ACORNS founder Wade Rathke transferred over to SEIU after he let his brother embezzle a cool million. Marylin Katz Obama’s headspokes person in Chi-town. Go ahead start googling names Micheal Klonsky, Mark Rudd, Todd Gitlin, Carl Davidson all prominent players in team Obama. All former SDS/Weathermen who who struggled mightily to destroy America and now the United Morons Of America have put the trust of nation in the hands of its enemies. If you want to get the gist of who is now in charge, read this: http://papundits.wordpress.com/2009/03/12/the-obama-economic-medicine-triage-or-euthanasia/comment-page-1/

It’s all Bush’s fault. He’s the criminal. Obama is just trying to fix what Bush messed up.

That is such a puerile argument. Any president can be forever free of making any mistakes, or causing any problems, because every president can always she he’s just trying to fix what the previous president did.

The sad thing is so many, many people fall for this sort of ridiculously simplistic argument.

B-b-b-but wasn’t this all irrelevant during the campaign?

capejasmine on May 11, 2009 at 3:38 PM

Listen up B Hussien Obama and ALL the labor unions. I’ll NEVER buy another american car ever again if the UAW gets both Chrysler and GM. Get ready for the unemployment line because if I have my way, thay’s where you’ll be.

I’m sure they have a plan for a way to make non-American cars way too expensive to afford.

Hey with ACORN now doing our census and the tyranny of the Obamanable snowman becoming ever more evident, can we at least start pondering IF we’ll even see an election in 2012?

These cow references are udderly maddening. The bovine scatology coming from the administration is a real pile of manure and obaba is a real bull.

I wonder who will get the death threats this time and what
‘pressure’ obama will put on behind the scenes to get his way. This WH is really, really dangerous. Just takes the laws and rules and either wiggles out, sneaks out or punches it’s way out and to h–l with the law and ethics. This is the second of these kinds of events and GM will be the third.

jeanie on May 11, 2009 at 5:05 PM

Actually, iam glad that dumbass Arnold got punked by the Chicago fraudster – may be if he goes home and cries at the feet of his wife, she could call Teddy and arrange for something.

California deserves this and more for re-electing this RINO.
