A conversation with Rush
posted at 4:25 pm on May 11, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
Today’s TEMS had to get scheduled earlier today for a conversation on politics. Not just any conversation, mind you, but a conversation with a man who has over 20 million listeners and has enormous political influence. Ironically, I wound up moving the show over Rush Limbaugh’s last broadcast hour in order to accommodate the appointment, about which I teased him when he first called.
His staff told me last week when we arranged this that Rush wanted to interview me for his June newsletter, but the call was much more of a conversation than an interview. We moved across many topics, talking about the Obama administration, some of my blog posts from today, to my history in the blogosphere and where I saw myself in relation to the media. I promised the staff that I wouldn’t give away too much about the interview, but actually it went longer than first planned; I presume Rush was enjoying the conversation as much as I was, and I enjoyed it immensely.
The interview focused mainly on my point of view, but I got a pretty good sense of Rush during the call as well. He’s less optimistic than I am about the present situation, but nowhere near as pessimistic as others that he knows. The one despair point that we both see is the lack of a credible opposition to the massive spending and intrusive governance we’re seeing from the Obama administration. The Republicans dissipated their credibility on fiscal discipline and responsibility from 2001-6, and we both see little improvement so far among GOP leaders, at least until recently. We need an effective and credible smaller-government, free-market party, and so far we’re not seeing a lot of life in the GOP along those lines.
The call lasted almost an hour, and I pity the person who has to transcribe it — but I can’t wait to read the article. I think you’ll find it fascinating, so keep an eye out for it at Rush’s site next month. It was a pleasure to have an hour of Rush’s time and as stimulating a conversation on politics as I’ve had recently.
Update: Opechanga in the comments wonders whether we can convince Rush to come on TEMS. The invitation’s always open, but I know how difficult that can be when my show comes right after his. One of these days … By the way, he did thank me for adjusting my show schedule today, and laughed when I apologized for stealing “literally dozens” of his listeners in the last hour of his show.

I know you were talking to Rush on the phone Ed, but did he happen to tell you if he was using a teleprompter during the interview?
fogw on May 11, 2009 at 4:30 PM
Did he asked you what it was like to work with an oddball?
Mark1971 on May 11, 2009 at 4:31 PM
Wow. Moving up to the big leagues.
Impressed I am. You are now a padawan I think. /yoda

Any chance of a reciprocity in interviews? We’d watch him on TEMS.
Good work Ed.
originalpechanga on May 11, 2009 at 4:34 PM
Ed, did the topic of helping your kids with their early parenthood come up at all? There is a huge parallel there between how successfully you and your wife stepped up to help your kids through school even though they were parents, and how Sarah Palin is stepping up and helping Bristol with her parenthood, although she obviously is not marrying the father (thank goodness). Just curious. I have enjoyed the few family updates that you share with us and I think it is a good story/role model for the nation to hear success story.
Congrats. I just finished reading the current Limbaugh Letter today. The featured person this month was a fascinating read, too.

DITTO! (To use a Rush phrase) I see a lot of Repubicans that are jockeying for position in 2010 and 2012, but I don’t see anyone standing up and calling Obama a socialist on the floor or asking for an official congressional apology to the Kopechne family for letting Mary Jo’s killer get away with it.
I see the occasional speech from DeMint or someone else, but no one consistently stands up for conservative values.
Conservatism is Freedom. Capitalism is Freedom. If people don’t like what the CEO of Bank of America gets paid, then go to another bank. I could go on for hours….
I want to see Republicans bashing Obama as much as Bush, except I want them to use Obama’s own laws and speeches against him. Bush was called evil because liberals and media thought he lied when he did give a speech. Obama says one thing, then says the other in the same speech and then he signs any far left or socialist law he can.

I wonder how in the hell you are optimistic at all, but I’m glad you are. Can’t be all dread and drear, you know?
Anywho — as someone pointed out before, you’ve earned this and I’m very glad you got it.
I don’t get the Limbaugh Letter, will you be posting it here on HA?
blatantblue on May 11, 2009 at 4:42 PM
Nothing is game/set/match. Nothing ever is!!
It is called repeal. And if there are not enough votes to repeal,, then vote to pass a new law that nullifies the old one. If they pass health care,,, then pass a law called freedom care! There are always always choices.

Just out of curiosity did the subject of Wanda Syke’s 20th Hijacker “joke” come up in your conversation with Rush?

Way to go Ed! Also, loved the way Rush handled the Obama/Sykes situation. How many times did he play that quote from the campaign when Obama said “quoting from Scripture: Its time to put childish things aside.”? I haven’t listened to the whole podcast yet. What a letdown for the lefties who were probably looking forward to some fireworks!

Good job Ed. I think everyone on this site should e-mail Rush and ask if Ed can guest host his show the next time he takes a day off!
nazo311 on May 11, 2009 at 5:46 PM
There needs to be credible opposition to the massive spending? Well I guess since the TEA Parties were filled with right-wing extremists, we don’t count. We might count more if every local office of the spend and tax members of congress had pickets each and every working day and on Saturday to decry their lack of common sense and priorities. I intend to start my own effort if I can get a permit from our local Democratic office holders.

Ed, Rush is one of the leaders of the conservative movement, I hope you take up the mantle and become one also. I’ve been on line with you since Captain’s days and hope we can build this into a real honest to God movement to stop the insanity we are living with daily.

Next up should be your interviews on Fox News!

Wow Ed, Rush acknowledged you, now you’re somebody, maybe I can be somebody if you acknowledge me. Actually, to be quite honest, I thought you were somebody before this. But Kudos just the same on your interview, it is after all what you do.

Call me a crazy optimist, but I don’t see the USA we all know and love being ruined by the ignorant left. There are smart and knowledgeable people crafting something that will pull the rug out from under all of the nutso lefties who are focused on nothing but money and power…BUT they have to keep it under wraps until the time is right.

By the way, I lived in a social democracy for 9 years (Sweden) and I don’t want the same thing happening here.
disa on May 11, 2009 at 11:52 PM
Terrific, Ed! I’ve heard Rush cite you several times; clearly your work stands out (which is why I kept reading Captain’s Quarters once I found it, and why I followed you here).
I think it’s already time to panic, what with Cap-and-Trade and an imminent takeover of health care coming down the pike. To be an effective opposition, the Republican Party—or its conservative heart, plus the ‘blue dog’ Democrats, have to coalesce behind a prominent spokesman. I could see Mitt Romney in that role, but he may be just too tentative.
I wrote Gov. Romney recently, suggesting he take the lead in exposing and opposing the ‘climate change’ hoax, because if he were to do so, the media couldn’t ignore him. He didn’t respond, so I have to conclude that he’s not interested.
Who then? Newt has become the Gabby Hayes of conservatives; Sarah isn’t articulate enough on the issues; the other governors are not going to draw any media attention.
Maybe someone not now in elective office? At this point we don’t need a candidate; we need a spokesman who can become a candidate. Rush has become the de facto spokesman for conservatives, but he will never run.
It’s a puzzle.

I know, Late to the show.. But this sounds like its going to be a hell of a read.
I hear a lot of things from the people who hate Limbaugh but have never met/spoken with him. I have never really heard anyone besides Bahaer who actually knew him say anything bad about him. I would be stoked to get an hour to pick his brain.
Say what you will about him, i can listen to talking points all day long, he is more often repeated then the other way around. That says something about the man.
