A couple of random thoughts on Sykes, NerdProm, and double standards
posted at 6:50 pm on May 10, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
The White House Correspondents Dinner has been a decades-long tradition of self-deprecation, opponent-skewering, and commingling the power elite and the media watchdogs. It’s about as meaningful as a White House press release, or these days, an MS-NBC report on the Obama administration. It only really matters to the people who attend, and I’d bet half of them would probably concede it doesn’t matter much at all.
Comedians like Wanda Sykes are almost literally a dime a dozen. They like to make headlines by being outrageous, but otherwise have as little relevance to everyday life as Baywatch does to Shakespeare. She belongs in the same category as Janeane Garofalo, who apparently can’t gain attention any other way than to play the race card by yelling “White Power” on stage at conservatives. Neither that nor calling Rush Limbaugh the 20th hijacker is witty, funny, or incisive. It’s at the same level of intellect as babies playing with their soiled diapers, and about as meaningful.
I’m not particularly exercised by it, although it did lead to an interesting Twitter exchange today between myself, Patterico, Steven Den Beste [see update below], Atrios, and a few others. About halfway into it I grew bored and watched Night at the Museum with my granddaughters. It was a much better use of my time.
I’ll stipulate that anyone who calls their political opponents “terrorists” have violated the Godwin’s Law of the post-9/11 world, regardless of which side they’re defending or attacking and have surrendered the argument. Terrorists blow up innocent civilians; radio commentators, pundits, and comedians exercise their First Amendment rights to criticize people. Those who can’t tell the difference between the two indict themselves with their idiocy, not anyone else.
I find it fascinating, though, that the media world and the White House shrieked when Rush said he hoped Obama would fail, but laughed at Sykes’ calling Rush a terrorist last night, including the President who felt so threatened by Rush that he criticized him by name in the first days of his presidency. If Rush had called Sykes the “20th terrorist” and wished kidney disease on her, I doubt that Obama would be laughing, and the media would fall all over themselves to rip him to shreds. But honestly, does the news of a double standard for conservatives really surprise anyone?
Sykes, who can be funny in movies, said something stupid. If we’re still talking about it tomorrow, the only person that benefits is Sykes. It makes the WHCD a lot more newsworthy than it should be, and perhaps by tomorrow we’ll all realize that nothing much happened there that affects anyone’s life a single iota.
Update: Apparently, the Steven Den Beste that was in the Twitter feed was not the real Steven Den Beste. My apologies, Steven, for getting fooled on that one. By the way, I forgot to mention that Jake Tapper was also in on that series of exchanges, and that it was pleasant, I believe, for everyone.

The sad fact is that that is probably true.
However, two wrongs do not make a right, and this does not exonerate what Sykes did (which was intentionally malicious as opposed to comedic) no more than it would any Right-wing comedian who did it.

Anyone see tonight’s ABC news? The fawning over Obama’s speech at the WHCD was unreal. Just as bad as everyone gushing over him there in person. If I can remember, the ABC news guy said something like, “He’s worn many hats, he’s been a campaigner, a diplomat, a father, a leader, and now, he’s a comedian” (cut to Obama clips). Gag-worthy.

Media bias isn’t working. Foxnews is # 1 in almost every single time slot and newspapers are tanking all over the country. When they start stopping journalist majors in univerities because there is a lack of demand for journalists, maybe then journalists will get back to living up to their own creed.
Hog Wild on May 10, 2009 at 8:35 PM
Another long post expressing a thoughtful opinion on something or other. This is why I’ve migrated to Fox’s new blog site. Instead of giving us paragraph after paragraph, they would write “Scandal? What do you think?”, link to something, and let me comment on how awful Obama is.
This site tries too hard.

Bias is in the eye of the beholder. And for the poster to claim that every single cultural expression in America is evidence of “liberal dominance” being thrown in his face says way more about the beholder’s eye than it does about reality (or ‘bias’ if you prefer). I suspect that the beholding eye, in this case, is pretty jaundiced.
Conservativism, especially the nasty Bush-Rove-Hannity variety so beloved of you internuts, is deeply unpalatable to most people right now after eight years of war, incompetence, and secrecy. That, my friend, is called “reality.”

Grow Fins:
To an extent, yes. and one may even ask if reality is inherently biased. However, as it is, bias- or, more accurately, unreasonable slant (as opposed to unavoidable bias that one trying to be fair could moderate)- is indeed present, and can often be proven (though again, not perfectly and with very great difficulty).
However, perhaps a more pressing issue than mere bias is unreasonable bias or bias masquerading as objectivity.
Case in point: would you trust be to write the entire truth on the pluses and negatives of torture?
Probably not. Perhaps you would trust me to write A PAPER on torture as opposed to a concrete definition, but again, asking me to write an objective, end-all-to-be-all of papers on the subject would not be something I would be fit to do, as my biases and other issues would filter into the paper and poison an ostentiably objective piece.
Now, perhaps you would trust me to write an opinion column on the issue, given the fact that I declare my biases beforehand and drop any claims to pure objectivity, but that is another matter entirely.
This is the sort of issue many here on the right are aggrivated about: the MSM has indeed been caught carrying water for the Dems and attacking the GOP (again, not always unfairly) while at the same time claiming pure objectivity.
Now, it is all fine and dandy to have a Left-leaning news organization, but the problem is when one publishes one’s opinion (no matter how solidly backed up by fact) as the unvarnished truth.
True, but the issue is was he truly taking “every single cultural expression in America” as evidence. Some organizations lean left, some lean right, some center, if for no other reason than the politics of their members.
Now the question is, of course, how true to reality this is. Unfortunately, while one can reasonably expect a biased study from a declared sprecial interests group or lobby, bias is indeed present in the news and the presention of such.
Now, this is not necessarily a problem, but it can be when
A. You start covering up facts
B. You start passing yourself off as impartial
Now, the news organizations (or MSM) by and large have a leftwing slant. This much is fine, but several cases have caught them redhanded acting more akin to some of the more dishonest partisan blogs on the web (think DKos or “Free” Republic). Which is what I think he was referring to.
True, but so is yours, and so is mine. And the jaundiced eye can indeed see, and sometimes correctly. And the amount of supporting evidence at least in regards to the news is not a slight issue.
Ok, please tell me you haven’t been attending the athensboy shcool of Debate.
Perhaps, perhaps not. Hardly a way to see (again, the recent election is probably some solid proof, but strictly speaking it is impossible to tell the current positions, and how the balance of power will shift).
True.
To an extent.
To an extent, but we are going to be getting quite a few more years of that.
No, it is your PERCEPTION of reality.
And I must admit, it is probably not that far off. However, the assumptions you make call into question how you see things. Just as similar ones do my own vision.
By itself? No.
As part of a larger strategy and with evidence to back it up?
Yes.
Which obviously means something other than DE FACTO. Limbaugh is not a small fry, but he isn’t king either. If anything, the GOP doesn’t really have one following our drubbing in 08-09, and we won’t have one for a few months at least, perhaps even a few years.
That would be because he isn’t. The face of the GOP right now is a rough combination of Bush, Palin, and McCain, and the leader is a mystery even to me.
g
It will take a while for those factors to change, if they do.
Hardly. Limbaugh has been far more loyal to the GOP than most self-proclaimed Conservatives, but he has always identified himself as a Conservative first, Repub second (or at least in that order).
Yes, he is influential, but influence alone does not a leader make. At most, Limbaugh is a kingmaker or semi-kingmaker, pulling a few strings behind the curtain and getting the word out but of not much use elsewhere.
Just tune in, and you will. Say what you will about Rush, but he wears his colors/bias on his sleeve.
Oh yes, and how did you break your magic 8-ball between the time of your response and when you predicted the GOP would go the way of the dodo? They usually don’t get damaged that easily.

It thinks I will be part of a violent “revolution” as opposed to the leftard attacks on the meetings of the G8 and World Bank….
Backing people whose entire starting point on the US is that we have some sort of unique and deep sin we can NEVER wash ourselves of is at least arguably “unpatriotic”.

Geeez, what a bunch of goofy rambling I’m reading. The focus should be “The One’s” reaction to the putrid rambliings of that b…..itch.

Obama’s been President for four months. Bush had 8 years to flush the economy down the toilet and raise the deficits (all with the support of the flag-bedecked peanut gallery of ‘small government’ conservatives, I might add). I think it’s safe to say that it’s still Bush’s economy for a few months yet.
