A couple of random thoughts on Sykes, NerdProm, and double standards
posted at 6:50 pm on May 10, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
The White House Correspondents Dinner has been a decades-long tradition of self-deprecation, opponent-skewering, and commingling the power elite and the media watchdogs. It’s about as meaningful as a White House press release, or these days, an MS-NBC report on the Obama administration. It only really matters to the people who attend, and I’d bet half of them would probably concede it doesn’t matter much at all.
Comedians like Wanda Sykes are almost literally a dime a dozen. They like to make headlines by being outrageous, but otherwise have as little relevance to everyday life as Baywatch does to Shakespeare. She belongs in the same category as Janeane Garofalo, who apparently can’t gain attention any other way than to play the race card by yelling “White Power” on stage at conservatives. Neither that nor calling Rush Limbaugh the 20th hijacker is witty, funny, or incisive. It’s at the same level of intellect as babies playing with their soiled diapers, and about as meaningful.
I’m not particularly exercised by it, although it did lead to an interesting Twitter exchange today between myself, Patterico, Steven Den Beste [see update below], Atrios, and a few others. About halfway into it I grew bored and watched Night at the Museum with my granddaughters. It was a much better use of my time.
I’ll stipulate that anyone who calls their political opponents “terrorists” have violated the Godwin’s Law of the post-9/11 world, regardless of which side they’re defending or attacking and have surrendered the argument. Terrorists blow up innocent civilians; radio commentators, pundits, and comedians exercise their First Amendment rights to criticize people. Those who can’t tell the difference between the two indict themselves with their idiocy, not anyone else.
I find it fascinating, though, that the media world and the White House shrieked when Rush said he hoped Obama would fail, but laughed at Sykes’ calling Rush a terrorist last night, including the President who felt so threatened by Rush that he criticized him by name in the first days of his presidency. If Rush had called Sykes the “20th terrorist” and wished kidney disease on her, I doubt that Obama would be laughing, and the media would fall all over themselves to rip him to shreds. But honestly, does the news of a double standard for conservatives really surprise anyone?
Sykes, who can be funny in movies, said something stupid. If we’re still talking about it tomorrow, the only person that benefits is Sykes. It makes the WHCD a lot more newsworthy than it should be, and perhaps by tomorrow we’ll all realize that nothing much happened there that affects anyone’s life a single iota.
Update: Apparently, the Steven Den Beste that was in the Twitter feed was not the real Steven Den Beste. My apologies, Steven, for getting fooled on that one. By the way, I forgot to mention that Jake Tapper was also in on that series of exchanges, and that it was pleasant, I believe, for everyone.

I wasn’t aware that O’bama was a heroin addict. Do you have credible multi-sourced cites?
I know he admitted using cocaine and marihuana and alcohol, but never heard he was riding the White Horse.

It will still amaze me how some people feel more compelled to alienate the same audience that puts money in their pocket. Additionally, it is always a disappointment to find that someone that you were entertained by, comes to believe that it is more advantageous to insult their fan base than remain popular and just show class by keeping the nastiest of their opinions to themselves.
Whether it’s the Dixie Chicks, Will Ferrell or Wanda Sykes, these entertainers wait until AFTER they make their money off of us to open their mouths with hatefulness. And now Ms. Sykes will wonder why many fans will turn on her after this. She, like the others, will claim that her “freedom of speech” is being attacked.

Your problem is that Sykes actually claims to be a comedian. Limbaugh has never done so.
In fact, Rush gets others (mainly Paul Shanklin) to do the comedy on his show.

I saw a video online with an interview with the Republican Queen and “who she was most interested in meeting tonight”. “OMFG, Wanda Sykes.” Well, she didn’t say the “OMFG” but Meghan Mac-truck was thinking it and did say Wanda.
Marcus on May 10, 2009 at 7:34 PM
It’s not too much of a generalization at all.
Leftist ‘humor’ is really just a vehicle used to convey their unhappiness, which makes it not really even humor. Lefties don’t understand what “good-humored” means because, as Rush often points out, they are always wringing their hands about something wrong in the world…
Bizarro No. 1 on May 10, 2009 at 7:35 PM
What’s this best illustrates is how much the Left is willing force laughter at vile, lame jokes from someone who has little, if any, comedy talent, in the name of ideological purity. They live in such a desperately shallow, contrived world…I would rather be dead than join them.
AUINSC on May 10, 2009 at 7:35 PM
Unless you’ve had experience with severe or chronic pain and have had to rely on pain killers just to move, even to take a crap … it’d probably be best for you and the left to just give it a rest.
By harping on Limbaugh you’re really targeting thousands of Americans who unintentionally become addicted. When there is no non-addictive alternative … you will become addicted if you have to rely on these medications. Some people can come off on their on, some can’t.

In actuality I suspect that part of the reason Barry refused to release his in-depth medical records as McCain did is that he is either still using or got Hep from needles.

The real difference here is that liberals feign horror at Limbaugh’s medically generated addiction as some kind of gross character flaw while cooing with “compassion” at the drug abuses of the latest Kennedy train wreck or any C-list movie star. Double standards are the foundation of lefty philosophy.

Back when I was 20 I got in a horrific car crash, and was hospitalized in a 4 person room with 3 guys all the same age. All 3 of them had been in motorcycle accidents with major broken bone issues.
2 of the 3 became addicted to the painkillers they were given-in less than a 2 week period. They both had to be weaned before discharge.
What’s so sad about this is that the Left are supposed to be people deeply caring of those with physical and emotional disabilities.
Of course, that’s all a crock too. To them, such people are to be ridiculed.

I’m sure every dialysis patient who hears the reference to kidney failure will think it is hysterical. The glib references to truly horrific fates these leftists, including Obama, wish on their opponents is frightening.
The seething visceral hatred from the left as evidenced by Sykes, Olberman, Silverman et al. has only intensified post Bush. They won’t stop until they have crushed all dissenting views.
The likely source of all this hatred is what they see in the mirror every morning. How sad form them. How sad for us.

The beautiful Ann Coulter makes much tamer jokes about the left and is maligned as some kind of ogre by the MSM.
There are numerous useful idiots among conservatives that go along with the narrative that Ann is some kind of pariah.
Ann’s jokes are truthful, witty, wry, ironic, and get to the heart of the issue. Wanda’s were vile disgusting slanderous and devoid of any irony wit or truth.

Concerning the Headlines, my question, how long before Mickey Edwards and Bill Bennet are kicked out of the party for heresy? And Cheney would choose Rush, a fat, hateful, ex drug addict over Colin Powell, a legitimate war hero. Tells you a lot about the present day GOP. The “purity” movement continues to eat their own. Great job goopers.

Ah, the lovely Mr. Corsi.
Will you please point me towards him so that I can slap the everloving s**t out of him for parroting every bit of conspiracy trash out there?
But than again, to be fair, the SOB is probably far more journalistic than many actual “journalists,” and that reflects horrifically on the latter, given Mr. Corsi’s habit of sticking one foot up the mouth and the other up his trunk.
Hardly so. The purpose behind that was to show that if we are going to b gunning after people for mishaps in regards to drugs, Obama is going to have a large crosshair on him. Sure, he did it at a far younger and (arguably) naive age, but this is partially counterbalanced by the fact that Rush did it due to pain, so I am guessing that it is about right.
The point being that going after Rush for his painkiller “issues” is like going after Obama for his COCAINE AND MARIJUANA (NOT HEROIN!!!) use: under-relevant, overly difficult, and not worth he time when there are so many OTHER valid reasons to be gunning for both.

Sykes is at the same level of social development as a 5 year old who discovers that they can make themselves the center of attention by saying a dirty word in front of the adults.
It’s instructive that the Obama in Chief giggled along like a 5 year old. No doubt that’s his way of setting a post-partisan tone in Washington — what with him being a transformational figure and all that other transcendent stuff.

Obama ‘Tried to Inject Heroin”
Ogabe strikes me as the persevering type when it comes to avoiding reality…
sven10077 on May 10, 2009 at 7:48 PM
It’s not about drug abuse or addiction. For the left, the only important thing is that Obama wins. That’s all that they care about. They’re willing to support any idea, policy, or plan that he suggests, because he is all that matters.
And that’s what scares me most.
JohnJ on May 10, 2009 at 7:48 PM
“legitimate war hero”? Only because Bush41 was kicking him in the ass all the way. Powell is what is known in the military as a “perfumed prince.” It is not a term of flattery. Opportunistic, ungrateful suck-up would be a better term for Powell.

The shoe fits a lot harder on the other foot. And Powell was kicked out REGARDLESS of his service because of his less-than honorable service in the administrative trenchs.

I agree with the gernal tone of this piece. I get so tired of pointing out the double standard conservatives are held to. It’s the abuse of the drug that’s the problem for the user. In the case of Rush the government abused its power in going after his medical records.

The issue is not who Sykes is, or even what she said. It’s what she said in the presence of a sitting POTUS, who appeared uncomfortable but laughed along. When he says “This was inappropriate, and Ms. Sykes will no longer be welcome performing at functions I attend,” fine.
Not holding my breath for an unqualified condemnation, though.

The audience laughed at a “joke” accusing an Obama opponent, a private citizen, of treason and wishing he had kidney failure. That audience was made up of elite members of the administration, Congress and the MSM.
So, if it’s OK for them to do it, why isn’t it OK for the common college professor, public school teacher, employer and neighbor to publicly call Obama opponents terrorists and wish their deaths?
This is another step in the ongoing stigmatization and bullying of anyone who dares express opposition to liberalism.
