Video: “Terminator Salvation,” the four-minute trailer

Aliens + Red Dawn + Mad Max = crazy delicious? Looks better to me than it did back in December, but something about it still doesn’t sit quite right. I think it’s Bale. Even here, some of his overacting is cringe-inducing. Aside from Shatner and late-period Al Pacino, is there any hammier leading man? Hey, Chris: If scenes of all-out war with giant robots can’t distract me from your overwrought brooding, you’re doing it wrong.

I’m going to toss out an idea; don’t react until you’ve really thought it through. A remake of GoodFellas with Pacino in the DeNiro role, Bale in the Liotta part, and Shatner doing his best Joe Pesci. Awesome.

Blowback

This movie is going to be AWESOME.

I’m so ditching my girlfriend when it comes out, and seeing it

Am I the only one excited that Michael Ironside is in this?!?!

You weren’t kidding about the overacting. I thought I was watching Keanu Reeves.

Shatner doing his best Joe Pesci

Somehow, I cannot see Shatner other than the Priceline Negotiator

How do you find me funny?

Kini on May 9, 2009 at 4:43 PM

‘Ham’ is too kind, I think.

Christian Bale was great in American Psycho.

He’s ruined everything he has touched since. He’s just too… pompous, anymore. His whole aura on the screen is glowing self-importance and entitlement. That’s the vibe that I get from him on and off screen anyway.

But since I’ve seen every other Terminator since numero uno, I’ll probably go see this for nostalgia sake.

SilverStar830 on May 9, 2009 at 4:43 PM

That bridge and canyon are the Rio Grande, outside Taos NM. Awesome country. Headed up there in a month.

bikermailman on May 9, 2009 at 4:44 PM

What? My girl is excited to see this too and not because of Bale either. But then she did dress up for the Star Trek movie at midnight…

And yes Micheal Ironside is a badass. Period.

oddjob1138 on May 9, 2009 at 4:47 PM

I’m looking forward to the movie. My anticipation hierarchy had been Terminator > Wolverine > Star Trek. Hood and will.i.am ruined Wolverine with the polithespian cryptocommentary (along with will.i.am’s atrocious acting,) leaving me with a toss up between Star Trek and Terminator for Patrick’s Preferred Summer Blockbuster (c). I’m thinking both will be better than Wolfy, but I’m crossing my fingers anyway.

As for Bale’s overacting, meh. All of the roles he picks are over the top. Soft and cuddly Bale is not. Anymore, “Bale plays Bale”, and that’s enough for now. If he keeps cranking out great movies, I’m not going to complain. Although the Pacino comparison is probably right on.

SilverStar830 on May 9, 2009 at 4:43 PM

Disagree. Dark Knight and others were a great success because of Bale’s intensity. Performances will endure in ways that, for instance, Wolverine will not.

Patrick on May 9, 2009 at 4:49 PM

“Who are you?”

Nethicus on May 9, 2009 at 4:52 PM

I stopped liking Wolverine when Logan looked in the mirror at the farm house, extended his Adamantium Claws, and they looked like someone DREW THEM IN.

I LOL’ed so hard with all my pals in the middle of the theatre.

…somehow they gave us the HS student discount. Do I look 17?

Anywho, Wolverine fell short.

Not Jackman’s fault though.

blatantblue on May 9, 2009 at 4:52 PM

I’m not sure if Shatner could pull off Pesci’s role, actually. Shatner is too goofy, to me, to pull off goofy-vulgar. Of course, I would still pay considerable money to see him try. Maybe Pacino would be better there… and then make Shatner the Pesci character’s absent-minded father (as opposed to mother in the film). I can see Shatner offering a bunch of blood-soaked guys some food without blinking an eye.

But Bale as Liotta’s character would be perfect, especially for the parts where he’s so stoned out of his gord that he doesn’t react to the world around him. Let’s make this happen!

Wineaholic on May 9, 2009 at 4:53 PM

Plus points for the A-10s. Now if there are a few C-130s it’ll be a must-see.

overwrought intense brooding= awesome. Like Clint Eastwood in his best westerns.

This thread comes off as alpha male envy.

Chubbs65 on May 9, 2009 at 5:03 PM

I liked this writeup more:

Terminator Salvation opens in two weeks, and the marketing department is already gearing up for that final push where the turd’s hanging three quarters of the way out your ass and you start sweating because you know if you don’t get it all out you’re just gonna be wiping forever and who has the time? Anyway, in preparation for all that, they’ve released this new, extended, four-minute trailer, and I’d be lying if I said it didn’t look badass. It’s interesting to note that most of these clips seem to take place during the day time, which is a switch from the first two, which seemed like 85% night scenes. Haha, just kidding, I liked it when the giant robot caught on fire.

But that’s just me

Ugly on May 9, 2009 at 5:04 PM

Hmmm, lessee here.

Spend money to see a movie (as the commercial says, pay twice the price to see a movie)?

Spend same amount of money to purchase food?

No question here.

You’re right, way too much CGI in everything.

Very cool. I was excited about this movie even before knowing that. I’ve been an Ironside fan since “V”. Great performance.

It looks like a fun movie to watch, I just hope they don’t get tied up trying to pass on lessons on morality or something else. Fingers crossed it’s just a good action flick with a interesting story line.

OT, saw Star Trek today, and it was a fun movie. Not like any Star Trek movie before, and probably why I really liked it. A lot of good action and humor. Plus Kirk really likes those green babes but that’s all I’m telling.

Hog Wild on May 9, 2009 at 5:45 PM

Allah, Bale is probably acting as he was directed. He doesn’t necessarily set the intensity of his reactions or his overall performance.

maverick muse on May 9, 2009 at 5:55 PM

The last Terminator was so ditzy, completely off base from the original story line, making Sarah Connor & Son losers.

If poor on the intensity, what then; Terminator & Man, BFFE?

Bale rocks with delivery. To hell with PC in action/drama.

Definitely a must see on the big silver screen. Too bad we can’t do this for mother’s day tomorrow.

maverick muse on May 9, 2009 at 6:01 PM

I love this.

Already have my own thoughts as to what Wright is; why he’s been sent back from the future; why the war is different than John remembers it, but I have no doubt I’ll be proven wrong when the movie hits theaters.

I thought Bale was great in the three movies I’ve seen him in: Batman Begins, The Machinist and Equilibrium. And since Will Smith will probably be making stupid Scientology movies from now on somebody will have to rise to the top of the science fiction genre.

Aliens + Red Dawn + Mad Max = crazy delicious?

That has got to be the best combination ever devised by mankind.

On another note, why the heck are they using ONLY A-10’s? I mean has humanity been hit so hard that ACTUAL air-superiority fighters aren’t around anymore? I mean its a good aircraft, but its designed for attacking ground targets and is not nearly as capable an air-to-air fighter compared to other aircraft. What about the Prowler or the Growler (would be useful against the machines)? The F/A-18 Superhornet? Shoot, the F-35 JSF? Or is it a simple fact that they were able to get the Air Force to get access to the A-10?

At any rate, I’m probably going to see it. I do enjoy watching a movie for sheer entertainment value and not have to think about it. Heck, that’s how I managed to enjoy the latest Indiana Jones movie….

conservnut on May 9, 2009 at 8:03 PM

Two words: Awe Some!

Glad I dodged the bullet on Wolverine. Star Trek sucked – all the action scenes were in filmed in CloseUp Shaky Cam(TM). It looks like they’re turning GI Joe into Power Rangers – wtf? I swear, all the trailers look the same to me.

But this looks like a real movie. Four minutes is a long time, they’d have to really work to connect all that cool stuff together in a way that sucks ass.

reliapundit on May 9, 2009 at 7:25 PM

That is a good question, and I only have 1 answer:

It’s common practice in war to create things that can kill your own kind. Not because you plan to, but if it can kill you, you’re more likely to think it can kill them.

And if a terminator’s weapons can kill it, it can kill you.

Chaz706 on May 9, 2009 at 9:02 PM

Poor choice for John Conner, although the trailer looks pretty good.

What about Obama as Conner? Those chiseled pecs, the 10″ bulging biceps. The true hero to so many uninformed people, the irony is perfect. The teleprompters placed everywhere for his awe-inspiring speeches to raise up a nation to fight against the opressive machine. The Obamamedia filming his every move and action, the 2 hour morning workout prior to running the World.
Suddenly Michelle (who still hates this nation)appears, rips off her sleeves to display those twin cannons of hers and takes on several terminators by herself, rips their heads off and takes their money to go shopping for $540 shoes and a fashion show in Paris and a gardening class in Italy.

Plot twist: I want the machines to win!!!

I’ll go see it, when it finally rolls around to theatres here in Germany. As for Bale, he gets hired to over act at least a little. Though I still think his best role was in the Prestige, which is surprisingly low-key for him. Michael Caine has consistently shown a willingness to work with Bale, and that’s good enough for me.

Personally, I’m really excited to see this. The first two Terminator flicks are all-time favorites, the third one was a ridiculous insult on nearly every level.

Even without Jim Cameron at the helm, this at least looks like a hell of a step up from T3. The addition of Michael “Sam Fisher” Ironside is just more icing on the cake.

(BTW V-rod, the T-1000 was not a cyborg, and if memory serves it was also a one-of-a-kind prototype.)

Cylor on May 10, 2009 at 7:51 AM

Mommypundit on May 10, 2009 at 8:26 AM

The preview, which I have seen in the theaters a few times, seems to be all action, and completely missing the interpersonal drama that was really central in the first 3 movies.

William Teach on May 10, 2009 at 8:59 AM

Seeing this topic here, it compels me to recommend that you take a look at this recording of a video game that I put on my game blog of a production called Mechanized Attack, made by SNK Corp. in 1989. It features cyborgs with prosthetic skin coverings not unlike the Terminator back in the day. And interestingly enough, it was made 2 years before James Cameron made the sequel to his 1984 movie called Judgement Day. If you want to play the game, you can surely find it online by searching for the M.A.M.E program and the ROM files for the game itself on Google. Enjoy!

And I suppose when this latest Terminator movie gets to Israel, I’ll see if I can check it out.

btw, a remake of Red Dawn is in pre-production right now – casting breakdowns went out last week.

a more realistic version would have China, who controls the LA port, pre-plant biologicals in every city and town, then have a Manchurian candidate president declare martial law over the remaining population, and then…. hey, wait a minute.

This movie is going to be AWESOME.

I’m so ditching my girlfriend when it comes out, and seeing it

Am I the only one excited that Michael Ironside is in this?!?!

Me and my wife are already looking for a sitter that opening night for a date night.

This is the first time I saw Michael Ironside. That is awesome! Nobody plays a better aging soldier then him. He always comes off tough as nails. He like the next generation Clint Eastwood.

Rightwingguy,

The A-10 “Hawg” is a titanium bathtub piggybacked on a weapons platform for the 30mm Gatling that fires so-un-PC depleted uranium rounds. It is designed so it can take considerably more abuse than the high-fliers. Yes, canopy fliers are purtier to look at, but not for me. The A-10 fits thematically within the film.

“We Are The Resistance”

The new tagline for Conservative Constitutionalists.
