Video: The blockbuster movie event of the summer

posted at 8:30 pm on May 8, 2009 by Allahpundit

A glorious palate cleanser on an exceedingly slow Friday night. Consider this a follow-up to my post the other day about the stupidity of summer action flicks. The only difference between this and something you might see at the multiplex is the quality of the FX. Recycled 1980s cartoon concept? Check. Plotline culminating in cataclysmic battle to determine the fate of the world? Check. Overwrought sound effects to shock the senses? Check. Gorgeous sexpot in cutoffs to encourage repeat viewings by teenage boys? Checkity check check. The obligatory “whose side are you on?” line with the toddler is a nice touch, as is the catchphrase line near the end. No Nickelback soundtrack, though?

I get that Hollywood’s reluctant to depart from the formula, but can we really not muster original plots and characters? If George Lucas were an up and comer today, the studio would be forcing him to make “Voltron.”

Blowback

Oh my gosh, that little girl at the end had me dying. I’d see it. :)

Emily M. on May 8, 2009 at 8:40 PM

Starring John Edwards as king of the ponies.

amerpundit on May 8, 2009 at 8:40 PM

LOL! Love it. Perfect satire.

I smell a re-make of Captain Planet and the Planeteers next. That’s ripe for live action “Transformers-esque” film.

lansing quaker on May 8, 2009 at 8:42 PM

I want it to happen. NOW!!!

I had My Little Ponies when I was a kid and this would make them awesomer.

mjk on May 8, 2009 at 8:42 PM

Gitty-up? Clever.

Cindy Munford on May 8, 2009 at 8:44 PM

*watches video*

*watches original cartoons on youtube*

What a bunch of pathetic drivel. Whoever authored this tripe should be billed for the electricity they wasted in the process of making it. I’d much rather watch the original cartoons, no contest. All of them. In back-to-back showings.

JUST FRICKN GREAT

JUST WHEN YOU THOUGHT IT COULDN’T GET ANY WORSE

Sorry to burst your bubble, Allahpundit, but Star Wars is considered at least a semi-remake of The Hidden Fortress.

jimmy the notable on May 8, 2009 at 8:52 PM

Hey….I am living only for that Voltron remake….

Deeeeeefenderz of the universe!
And where is the He-Man movie?
By the Power of Greyskull!!!!!

Snob.

strangelet on May 8, 2009 at 8:52 PM

I heard Dave Obey said we have one year to defeat the ponies.

rob verdi on May 8, 2009 at 8:56 PM

I swear I thought that guy was Deval Patrick!

SouthernGent on May 8, 2009 at 8:58 PM

“Checkity check check…….”

………………. Check!

Seven Percent Solution on May 8, 2009 at 9:09 PM

Hollywood would just politicize it anyways.

To defeat the threat created by an evil rightwing Military/Corporate alliance, the liberal President would call upon his paid volunteer unicorn army of community organizers to defeat the mutant capitalist ponies.

When is live action Robotech coming out?

burnitup on May 8, 2009 at 9:22 PM

MUCH better than Indiana Jones’ last one – Kingdom of the Crystal Skulls – by FAR!

fred5678 on May 8, 2009 at 9:27 PM

You were promised unicorns.

Yo got….ponies.

notropis on May 8, 2009 at 9:31 PM

That was hilarious!

CP on May 8, 2009 at 9:32 PM

“GITTY UP”

Wait, was that Piper Palin at the end? She could sure use that “speak softly and carry a big stick” attitude with Chip Thoma and the lemonade stand stand-off.

unwashed minion on May 8, 2009 at 9:46 PM

The President promised us all poneys and Unicorns…

Little did the American people suspect the horror that that Obama Administration would unleash…

William Amos on May 8, 2009 at 9:50 PM

There’s a difference between influenced by as George Lucas himself stated Hidden Fortress influenced him and a remake/ripoff.

As for the My Little Pony movie… So awesome.

OMG PWNIES!!11!1

…sorry, couldn’t resist.

Astro Boy!

And, of course, Gumby & Pokey’s Excellent Adventure!

Pony apocalypse.

Apacalyps opens the door in a whirl, “Hi!” Then disappears back behind the red curtain.

My favorite line was the Attractive Blonde Female Scientist declaring, “That’s more horsepower than a horse!”

apollyonbob on May 8, 2009 at 11:09 PM

anyone know what’s going on with that Japanese Bunny Iraq War movie?

Chiasmos on May 8, 2009 at 11:14 PM

Someday, you may have little girls of you own. Then you’ll know…

Blake on May 8, 2009 at 11:25 PM

Hay! According to Gallup polls, big crowds will be ponying up at the troughs for this dog-and-pony show.

Am I proud of these attempts at humor?
Neigh.
They’re lame, so shoot my little Punnies.

My collie says:

Mmm.mmm.mmm. *drool* I just LOVE horse meat.

I guess the glue factories will have to work overtime on this one.

As long as there is never ever a takeoff of the Teletubbies. Now THAT I felt was an invasion! Although it’s still hard to get that purple dinasour song out of my head…Come to think of it, Care Bears would be just as frightening as Little Ponies. Or… maybe it wouldn’t be too bad if it were in some fashion of Godzilla movies like Little Ponies Vs. Care Bears

jusgottabeme on May 9, 2009 at 12:43 AM

I like how the guy is sitting at the computer and talking about a breach, and its a laptop zooming in on google earths image of the planet.

TheBlueSite on May 9, 2009 at 12:51 AM

As long as there is never ever a takeoff of the Teletubbies.

I’ve probably spent no more than an hour of my 47 years playing video games, but I do recall enjoying shooting holes in those Teletubby characters some years ago.

jgapinoy on May 9, 2009 at 12:57 AM

At least it looks better than the G.I. Joe movie.

TheMightyMonarch on May 9, 2009 at 1:52 AM

Gigantor!

Paul_in_NJ on May 8, 2009 at 10:24 PM

Now THAT would be cool…. I loved Gigantor, growing up in New Jersey in the 60s. It was kind an escape, to imagine having a giant robot at your beckoning that would always save the day.

Later in life I turned to drugs as an escape, but that’s a whole other story. ;-)

UltimateBob on May 9, 2009 at 2:12 AM

Now that’s pony $#!^. Don’t tell the President, he’ll tax U.S. into oblivion to pay for the clean up.

MSGTAS on May 9, 2009 at 9:53 AM

hah!

It looks just like a Hollywood movie. Only, to make things more realistic, the obama-ish character should get up on stage , stomp his foot a few times, whinny, and then bow allegiance to the little ponies. That’s until humans fight back, and hen he’ll say he was not the man he thought he was and suddenly do a complete 180 and tell everyone all this talk about invasion of earth is just a diversion form the real issues
