Video: Letterman finally figures out what’s funny about Barack Obama

posted at 5:55 pm on May 8, 2009 by Allahpundit

Could have been a witty, incisive (if not fall-down-funny) bit had they framed it as a commentary on how sacrosanct The One is to late-night comedians, whether for reasons of racial jitters or old-fashioned liberal bias. Instead they copped out and made it a goof about how lame and lazy their writers are. I’m just old enough to remember when Letterman was regarded as something of a comic daredevil for the way his show operated as a wry satire of the genre. Here’s what the daredevil’s reduced to now. Click the image to watch.

Who knew Letterman was still alive?

Mister Ghost on May 8, 2009 at 5:59 PM

Just another spout for DNC talking points.

GarandFan on May 8, 2009 at 6:01 PM

Basically they still won’t make fun of Obama, insisting that he’s just so gosh-darn great and busy that there’s nothing to make fun of. And in the process they’re still making jokes about Bush stupidity.

Their jokes are about how there’s nothing to make fun of about him.

amerpundit on May 8, 2009 at 6:02 PM

Letterman, at the beginning of the clip says that he didn’t make fun of clinton for the first 4 years cuz he wasn’t sure what was going on there (clearly, the edit happens as letterman talks about lewinsky).

This is a total bunch of hooey. I watched letterman those years (I was in college) and he was always knocking around clinton.

lorien1973 on May 8, 2009 at 6:02 PM

I’m just old enough to remember when Letterman was regarded as something of a comic daredevil…

Such as the time he donned a velcro suit and flung himself against a wall.

That one’s still a gut buster.

The Ugly American on May 8, 2009 at 6:02 PM

I dare say TOTUS would disagree…

The Ugly American on May 8, 2009 at 6:02 PM

I like how everyone marveled at the new technology that was Velcro.

amerpundit on May 8, 2009 at 6:05 PM

Maybe what’s happening to this country is not funny.

Firebird on May 8, 2009 at 6:06 PM

Drought over? I call bullsh!t. The whole bit, just like Letterman’s TOTUS bit, revolves around the meme itself. It’s not making fun of Obama. It is making fun of the comedians-still-can’t-find-anything-funny-about-Obama meme. And the fat joke at the end is about Gore.

Letterman didn’t get Johnny’s gig for very good reasons.

Christien on May 8, 2009 at 6:07 PM

Does that make Dave a racist?

RobCon on May 8, 2009 at 6:07 PM

All right, all right. What we need are some jokes here.

Barack Obama is so enamored of his own girft that he promised to make pigs fly. Sure enough, after only two months in office, swine flew (flu). Hnyuk hnyuk. :)

Tuning Spork on May 8, 2009 at 6:13 PM

Seven Percent Solution on May 8, 2009 at 6:14 PM

Did you hear how he said Bush was a goldmine for material? That was hilarious!

Oh, I’m still wiping the tears from my eyes. This will still be funny in 6 years, when we’re all waiting in line for Government Cheese…

Nethicus on May 8, 2009 at 6:15 PM

Wow, how pathetic.

Lance Murdock on May 8, 2009 at 6:15 PM

How does making “messiah” jokes make the writers racist?

I mean, that seems like the most obvious route. The whole “Mt. Olympus” “The One” stuff is funny, somewhat accurate, and not so harsh that Obama supporters will bring out the pitchforks. Are they really this stupid?

jimmy the notable on May 8, 2009 at 6:16 PM

Eric Holder’s theory in action…

ladyingray on May 8, 2009 at 6:18 PM

I used to love, love, love watching Letterman…when he was funny!!

I haven’t watched him in over ten years…I see I haven’t missed much except a rich old man becoming more bitter with each passing day!!

I don’t watch Letterman anymore…he has turned out to be a bitter old man.

d1carter on May 8, 2009 at 6:19 PM

Letterman is another Bill Maher, who changed radically when he got a bigger contract on a different network. Letterman went from being irreverant and hip, breaking all of the conventional talk show host “rules” (first question to Don King, “What the Hell is the deal with your hair?”)on NBC to being just another celebrity ass kisser a la Larry King on CBS.

Phildorex on May 8, 2009 at 6:21 PM

Letterman back in the 80s defined comedy. I averaged probably 5 maybe 6 hours of sleep a night my four years (82-86) of high school because I stayed up to watch his show, which ended, back then, at 1:30. People like Jon Stewart are still doing an 80′s Letterman schtick. I haven’t watched him in years, and not regularly in 20 years. It’s just stale. Give me The Regulator Guy, Toast On a Stick, and Frank and Fred! As a comedic force, Letterman died long ago.

Mocking the president is the bread and butter of a late night show and now our favorite hosts have lost the biggest source of humor at their disposal because Obama is competent.

Competent. By what standard? His first hundred days have been a long litany of blunders and unforced errors, the most glaring of which happening directly above Letterman’s office.

Three pairs of comedians: Leno and Letterman; Stewart and Maher, DeGeneres and O’Donnell. All six are lefties. In each pair, you have one who is genuinely nice (Stewart seems to be, when he’s not being a douchebag), and actually funny. The other one, bitter, hateful, not funny, and a dark husk of their former selves.

Very few people were as big a Letterman fan as I was from his first show to the early 90′s. I graduated from college and moved on.

Letterman is now such a left wing tool it is beyond embarrassing.

That’s why there’s no Obama jokes, Dave. Because you’re a washed up tool.

Let’s make fun of the comedians, instead. It’s really really easy. The comedy just sorta writes itself.

Jewel on May 8, 2009 at 6:33 PM

I’ve noticed the same drop off with the Smothers Brothers. Their TV show really was edgy and funny for the time,..now both Dick and Tom seem content to just be aging hippies. I wonder how they would have handled Obama’s majestic screwups in their heyday.

We’ve known for well over a decade that Letterman wasn’t funny, and we’ve known for over a year that his type was leading a nation of cowards when it came to (not) mocking Obama. It’s not really “news” at this point.

Although I find it funny that the commenter seemed to have a problem now with your linking HuffPo here when it’s been linked in the headlines maybe a hundred times prior.

calbear on May 8, 2009 at 6:41 PM

Letterman’s just another idiot liberal. No matter how many mistakes Obama makes, no matter how many promises Obama breaks, no matter how many times Obama demonstrates he is corrupt, Letterman will never seriously criticize him. Obama’s black, and therefore off limits.

AZCoyote on May 8, 2009 at 6:41 PM

He used to be a Republican back in the day. I watched him too in college during Clinton’s years and I too remember Dave ripping on Billy Jeff. As did Jon Stewart when he had the Jon Stewart Show on MTV, which I recall as being hilarious….shows you how young and stupid one can be.

The President flew a guy halfway across the nation to the White House to make him a pizza. If a comedian have such a pizza delivery occur without joking about it taking more than 30 minutes or playing cheesy adult video background music is just not trying.

nationspatriotcom on May 8, 2009 at 7:47 PM

I don’t know what’s funnier. The fact that all the late night hosts are so liberal that they’re afraid to make a joke about “The ONE”, or the fact that the liberal posters commenting at that Huffpo article are so rabidly partisan that they truly belive that Obama is above having jokes made at his expense. Obviously they’ve never heard the phrase “turnabout is fair play”

Pathetic sheep.

Scrappy on May 8, 2009 at 7:53 PM

Perhaps Letterman’s writers could start cruising Ed’s “Obamateurism of the Day.”

Maybe they could riff on something like, giving US format videos to a British PM who’s going blind (that one still cracks me up), or giving the Queen an IPod stuffed to the brim with photos and videos of Himself (yuk, yuk), or buzzing New Yorkers in AF One (I’ll bet they could even work a Cheney angle into that joke.)

Or, maybe even some yuks about Dijon mustard (I can see something like a Chicago pimp and a Chicago mob boss in a send-up of the old “Grey Poupon” commercials.)

Or, if Letterman were really serious about finding Obama jokes, he could just hire Iowahawk.

Fox should really try and get Dennis Miller for an 11:00pm show and then move Red Eye from Fox News at 3:00am to follow Miller at 12:00am. That would pull in a lot of late night ratings.

Letterman doesn’t like to do stuff unless he is sure it will get good audience reaction. He didn’t use to be that way.

A decade of Clinton intern jokes every show, plus a couple of years of easy Bush/Cheney jokes, have made Letterman very lazy.

Obama will get his eventually. Letterman is tired of Clinton and Bush jokes. He is ready to move on if his studio audience is. People that call Letterman liberal don’t know what they are talking about.

No, Letterman gave Bush a mostly free ride. Bush fans are only focusing on the last couple of years. Letterman treated Bush with kid gloves before that.

Moesart on May 8, 2009 at 9:57 PM

O’Reilly did a segment on his show tonight, about this.

He did an interview with a former writer for Leno. This writer, was a complete tool. He said when Obama does something, that’s worth joking over, they’ll write jokes about it. O’Reilly told him, he could site 15 things, that were joke worthy. All this writer wanted to do, was go on, and on, about how illiterate, and ignorant, Bush is.

I was ready to throw a brick thru the screen. LOL

These people are leftists, and ass kissers to the max. I prefer reading here, or reading a book now days. Television just isn’t fun anymore, since they force their lefty crap down everyone’s throats.

Headline for limp Letterman:

Cowards make crappy comics.

Making fun of Barry the Childish ~to his slobbering Obots~ is like mocking their own groinal endowment… or lack thereof.

Mostly lack thereof.

What could be funny about a guy living with his mother-in-law in the White House?

How having a wife who’s lower jaw would easily make a birdbath for a host of hummingbirds?

Texyank on May 9, 2009 at 12:04 AM

Yeah. David Letterman used to be funny enough to watch pretty much every night. Then he just gave up and stopped trying. I haven’t watched his show in years and my choice to continue to not watch his show is yet again reaffirmed.

But don’t blame Dave entirely. He’s just doing what practically ALL the well behaved little boys and girls with a TV show are doing. After all, once Barackus Caesar gets far enough down his list, the broadcast networks will also be nationalized and under government control. Dave’s probably just hedging his bets like everyone else in the MSM.

SilverStar830 on May 9, 2009 at 1:13 AM

In spite of a compromised economy and a heightened threat from terrorists, millions of Americans from all walks of life go to work every day and do their best for the common good. Leibowitz and Letterman spew the most foul liberal nonsense as facts to their O-Head audience who applaud and hoot like trained seals. It is pure propoganda for the state.

All the lefty comics are just as guilty as the MSM of promoting the lie of Big Brain Barry. We need to remember this after the stench of the Obastard administration is removed from the White House.
