U.S.-Israeli cooperation starting to break down under Obama?

posted at 9:10 pm on May 8, 2009 by Allahpundit

Predictable — or is it?

Senior officials in Jerusalem expressed concern recently over the sharp decline in the coordination between Israel and the United States on security and state affairs since President Barack Obama’s entered the White House and especially since the formation of Israel’s new government…

“Obama’s people brief their Israeli counterparts in advance much less about security and Middle East policy activities than the Bush administration used to,” the officials said.

In addition, when they do brief Israeli officials, they don’t consult with them or coordinate their statements in advance.

This has caused several coordination “malfunctions” between the two states in the past two months, they said…

[A senior] official said the new administration no longer seems to see Israel as a “special” or “extraordinary” state in the Middle East, with which the U.S. must maintain a different dialogue than with other states.

Serious question: If you’re Obama and your worst nightmare is an unexpected Israeli attack on Iran that provokes a regional war and jeopardizes the world’s oil supply, why on earth would you alienate the Israeli leadership? Wouldn’t you want to get as close to them as possible, to exert maximum influence? This doesn’t add up. It’s almost like saying, “We’re not friends anymore, so do whatever you want.” Plausible deniability, in other words.

For the record, a near-majority says that if Israel attacks, the U.S. should “help.” Only 37 percent say we should do nothing.

U.S.-Israeli cooperation starting to break down under Obama?

Oh, yes, it is.

The Israelis know that when they haven’t a friend in the world, at least they have themselves…and the more this Administration treats them like simple little children who won’t shake hands and apologize after a playground dust up, the more the Israelis will come to terms, and take care of the threats they face on their own…they’ve done it before.

And when the dust settles…they will ask, America, where were you? And they will already know the answer.

In the words of Rabbi Michael Berenbaum, at a commemoration of the Holocaust in Moscow in 1979, from Lamentations:

“Remember our days as of old, except if you have scorned us utterly.”

I was looking for a quote from an interview I’d heard to put in a reply to an above comment about Jimmy Carter but instead I found the entire interview online.

It’s Michael Medved interviewing Mike Evans about a book that he just released called Jimmy Carter the Liberal Left and World Chaos: A Carter/Obama Plan That Will Not Work.

It’s a very enlightening interview and well worth the time if you want to understand how Jimmy Carter thinks.

AP, you’re stretching, and I think you know it. Why contrive an elaborate possible justification for Obama’s actions, based on the idea that he can still be regarded as competent? The guy is clearly playing it off the cuff, using his progressive instincts (which, these days, includes an antipathy to Israel, because they’re not victims anymore), and the result is an incompetence that leaves Jimmy Carter in the dust. And I never thought I’d see such a thing.

It’s not Obama’s worst nightmare, because the left has been in bed with radical islam for years. Read David Horowitz’ book Unholy Alliance, it spells it all out. Besides, the left thrives on destabilization leading to anarchy, it paves the way for them to seize power quickly in a given area. The Soviet Union and Red China have been using that playbook for decades.

I don’t think we have to imagine the Obama Administration is playing 3D chess with their foreign policy; they’re simply not that sharp. Based on observations of their domestic policy, I attribute everything they do to sloppy incompetence propelled forward by a rigid Leftist ideology.

Serious question: If you’re Obama and your worst nightmare is an unexpected Israeli attack on Iran that provokes a regional war and jeopardizes the world’s oil supply, why on earth would you alienate the Israeli leadership?

Serious question: You’re an American citizen and you’ve just realized that the community organizer you’ve just elected has chosen to alienate Israel, appease its aggressors, and turn his back on an ally this nation has protected and stood beside for over forty years. His motives are un-expainable and this policy could jeopardize the entire world’s stability. What do you do?

Rovin on May 8, 2009 at 9:59 PM

Are we about to witness an American President cut off aid to Israel because he “doesn’t like the way they play”?

While I don’t think Obama has the skill to overtly do something like that, nothing prevents him from using his oratory skills to send a message to the radical Islamists, Palestinians, and their supporters that the US may just look the other way or be slow to respond should something dramatic happen in the Middle East.

Oh, and for the record, he speaks to Muslimania in June from Egypt. (Wink Wink)

The situation you describe is NOT Obama’s worst nightmare because it neither reflects poorly on himself not prevents him from forwarding his extremist liberal policies.

And besides, Obama may well believe that Israel’s existence may well be one of the things for which America should apologize to the world.

Loxodonta on May 8, 2009 at 10:00 PM

America should apologize to the world.

Yes. I agree this is a material intent. But to what avail? Exactly what is the reward?

ericdijon on May 8, 2009 at 10:04 PM

The only outlying reasonable explanation i can come up with on this is that the glut of special envoys is creating difficulties for normal diplomatic relations. I could be wrong, but its my best attempt at an objective assessment that doesn’t assume outright malicious intent on behalf of the administration.

Now, applying the HotAir approved conventional wisdom, one could certainly conclude that Obama is being reckless and dangerous with the ship of state and it is beginning to have a significant impact on day to day operations. That’s terrible news. If Obama’s foreign policy team can’t get it together soon, we’re in for a worthless 4-8 years. At least with the present team of prestige appointments with no stomach for the stuff of either diplomacy or war.

If it comes down to it, he will stand with his Muslim brothers, and sisters.

capejasmine on May 8, 2009 at 10:45 PM

Obama’s foreign policy team (and his choice for the UN) are all sympathetic to Palestine over Israel. Witness the latest money dump to Hamas.

This behavior is just another facet of where Obama’s loyalties lie, and they are not with our ally Israel.

Taranto’s “Best of the Web” today and yesterday posted two squibs about the Jimmy Carteresqe approach that Obama is taking toward Israel. Ironically, because of the concern of the Arab nations re Iraq’s growing nuclear threat to the region, Israel is making some alliances of its own with those Arab nations. Obama’s appeasement to Iran is likely to bite him in the butt.

onlineanalyst on May 8, 2009 at 10:53 PM

“[A senior] official said the new administration no longer seems to see Israel as a “special” or “extraordinary” state in the Middle East….”

This is part and parcel of Obama’s and the leftist’s radical egalitarianism. Israel is just another country in the Middle East (why can’t they just get along with their neighbors, they’re all the same?}

To Obama, America is just another country and he is just another President. In fact, America is worse and causes all the problems, thus the necessity for the endless Apology Tours.

Don’t believe me yet? How about this example of the insanity. The borders with Mexico and Canada are equal, in fact the Canadian’s are worse, because that’s where some of the 9/11 terrorists came across the border. So, if we build a fence on the border with Mexico, we have to do the same on the border with Canada. Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano repeated this canard about Canada AFTER being informed it wasn’t true.

Numbskull John McCain repeated it a couple of days after that. He doesn’t want to secure the border with Mexico either and follows the same thought pattern.

They ignore the 3,000 + folks, who are known to have infiltrated into the US from Mexico from countries that supply lots of Al Qaeda terrorists.

Everyone’s equal, except the civilized people are worse. Israel is worse, America is worse and Canada is worse.

It’s all a lot of fun, until the bodies start hitting the sidewalk. We all know, that this is going to happen. Obama Administration actions will lead to very many deaths.

Things are going to get very interesting very soon in the Middle East.

Obama wants to dump Israel and will probably threaten to cut off all military aid if Israel attacks Iran’s nuke plants.

Israel in turn may tell Obama that they will use nukes if backed into a deadly corner.

The Muslims, as a noble culture are infiltrating the continents with a huge birthrate compared to others, are human beings and the facts should be addressed. Being Muslim is fabulous, but we are an Judeo -Christian Nation and extremism in any religion or culture against another is really not ok.

Do you think that should be allowed as currently allowed in certain sectors in the UK? Do you see that working with the Constitution?

There is a slight, 0.00001% chance of something like that. More likely, he’s just an inexperienced snake oil salesman promoted vastly beyond his level of incompetence and who will either evolve or gravely damage us all.

and soon we will be living under Sharia Law and the women will be forced to wear burkhas.

That is a possibility, but I doubt Obama will be the one to institute it, at least on his free will.

Actually Obama may be the anti-christ,

Well, much is possible, but now we are entering 0.00000000001% possibilities.

and we can not let him speak at Notre Dame.

Notre Dame can have him, I just wonder why, given his various and often very-unchristian stances.

Acorn stole the election for Obama

Unlikely, though evidence is turning up that they tried. But even so, hius victory was outside that margin of error, so I think it is safe to say that the voters genuinely believed him.

and the worlds recession was caused by giving house loans to poor black people.

More like “the world’s recession was caused by corrupt bearucrats embezzling and cooking the books while cutting deals with thugs and “community organizers” to give loans that had absolutely no chance of being redeemed, often to poor people, to black people, and to poor black people, but not necessarily either of the two.”

Obama is also a communist/socialist/marxist and hates capitalism and white people.

The second, unlikely given his connections (Ayers, Dorhn, etc), but his connections do point in that direction (Rev. Wright, your office is calling). The first, on the other hand, is infinitely more likely: if he doesn’t view himself as one of those, he is certainly taking a lot out of their playbooks, VASTLY more than even FDR did. And the comparisons in time between the two (the longest serving President versus the newbie just over his 100 day mark) mean that he is going at a ridiculous rate.

Michelle has never been proud of this country and thinks this is a mean country.

If we are to trust what she says, than yes.

An innocent slip of the tounge? Perhaps. But that IS what she said.

The One can’t speak without a teleprompter even though he was the editor of the Harvard Law Review.

Please tell me I don’t have to educate you on the distinctions between speaking and writing? Oh yes, and while he CAN speak without it, he is inordinately dependent on it, and without it he makes some very UGLY gaffes.

Republicans don’t want to moderate because they are smarter and better looking than the libruls.

And because we tried that before and we got Obama and a massive Liberal majority in Congress, and as Reagan showed, the road to victory lies in rejuvenating the base and in rallying the center to your side.

If gays are allowed to marry, than people could marry animals.

Now THIS is one place I differ from my fellow Conservatives, as I do support Gay marriage. However, the issue lies in it being the distinction of the churches on who gets “officially” hitched (as oppsoed to the social bonds already recognized by law), and the unfortunate fact that many are seeking to curtail the sovereignty of the individual churches through federal intervention as opposed to the longer but VASTLY more rewarding path of negotiating with them.

We should attack Iran just in case they might have a nuclear weapon.

And because they have been officially at war with us for thirty years, and because they finance terrorism, and because they have threatened to use the bomb to wipe our allies from the map, and because they are a genocidal theocracy who crushes internal dissent, and…

Iraq should be a cakewalk and there isn’t an insurgency.

Well, right now it is and right now there sure as hell isn’t much of one, is there?

We will be greeted as liberators.

We were, and we are, save by some bitter tribals, Islamists, and Baathist loyalists.

Sarah Palin is really a genius and the media attacked her.

Genius? That remains to be seen. But she WAS attacked by the media out of all proportion to the alleged crimes when compared with what Dems have gotten away with scarred by the media.

Bristol became pregnant by immaculate conception.

Hell, maybe that is so and the whole “Bristol-Levy” thing is meant as a coverup.

But almost certainly not.

However, it would be vastly more likely than the idea that Trig is somehow Bristols and not Sarah’s, particularly given the differences in time.

This is what you and your fellow kooks are claiming, and we are not saying that she got pregnant by immaculate conception: just that Trig is Sarah’s.

Abstinence works.

It does, assuming there is no rape involved.

Our enemies hate us for our freedom.

Yes, amongst a boatload of other reasons.

Liberty is on the march in the middle east.

Not yet, but one domino can trigger a tidal wave.

Saudi Arabia is our ally.

Not really, and few on the Right ignore it. We just are forced to be nice given the absolute lack of a “Green Revolution” as of yet and your insistence on not drilling in our own oilfields.

The gop is in a death spiral, goopers are in a state of denial.

Proof?

Oh, that’s right, you don’t do proof, do you?

Come back here when you can actually ARGUE, as opposed to drive-by flame.

Come on AP, go beyond the veil a bit. Obama picks his nemesis / rival for Secretary of State, state is being shut out in this White House. You need to look deeper dude..

The National Security Council & close advisors are running the show. James Jones, samantha power, susan rice, and the whole cadre of progressive advisors have the president’s ear. Mr Inept goes around the room, what do you think he hears all day!? Grand Bargain, Palestinians, the key to Iran who wants peace with us is through screwing Israel, etc. He is amassing the EU, the Arabs, The Islamists to box Israel in to massive concessions because he & everyone around him BELIEVES that these entities want to be friends with the USA, it’s only the damn Zionists that are in the way!

He is bending over backwards to appease the muslim dregs of the world & all their allies, are you wearing shades today?

Anyone who thinks Biden or Clinton has say here is crazy imho. David Axelrod and the original campaign core of advisors are running the show, that’s why it is so chaotic & confused because they are a bunch of amateur morons on FP with totally backward notions of the real world, the right hand at state is not coordinated with the left hand the White House, has little pull. For the 1st time in a while you have a WH more LEFT than the notorious State Dept!!

Everyone across the board in his cadre have no love for Israel, they hate us. Rahm is the only exception & he is there for one reason, to pitbull, blackmail, and tarnish anything that comes in the way of the One’s progressive bullsh*t – Especially on Israel! Including wrangling the US Senate & House, where the Israel support lives..

This was the most left campaign core we have seen in like forever, and now there is surprise when they act like it!? You are looking for genius sun tzu strategy because you cannot compute the sheer incompetence of it all..

O

bama is dangerously ignorant and needs to be removed from office. Too early to impeach?

Impeachment takes too long. Think of a much quicker way.

Israel has 80-200 nuclear weapons at hand. What do they have by way of practical delivery vehicles?

Suppose something silly. They go for broke. Load at least half their weapons on whatever aircraft they have that will carry them. They then fly those planes over inhabited Arab territory all the way to Iran. They inform the world that if attacked the planes drop the armed weapons where they are. They do not turn on their ECM suites until they get near Iran. (Turn the suites on earlier if the Iranians launch counter-strikes or interceptors over non-Iranian territory.)

What does the US do?

What do the Arab nations thus threatened do?

What would Obama do in private?

Try to see the world as the enemy sees it. If you were a Muslim and a Muslim-lover, who is the best friend you have in the Middle East? Iran.

Obama would drop a load in his shorts and mumble: “Ah Salem I like em.”

Don’t forget that Israel has several Dolphin-class submarines armed with nuclear missiles. If Israel took a devastating first strike, her subs could still could still turn some sandy Arab cities to glass.

Th May 7 2009

Forty-nine percent (49%) of Americans say that if Israel launches an attack against Iran, the United States should help Israel. The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey found that 37% believe the United States should do nothing while just 2% believe the U.S. should help Iran.

LAST SUMMER [Bush in office] just 42% said the United States should help Israel while 46% said the nation should do nothing.

The increase from 42% to 49% in one year after change in POTUS and given Obama, more Americans realize he is making us less secure, and that we’d better shore up our alliance with Israel.

Sixty-four percent (64%) of Republicans say that the U.S. should help Israel as do 50% of those not affiliated with either major political party. A plurality of Democrats (44%) say that the U.S. should do nothing.

Sixty-six percent (66%) of all voters now say that preventing Iran from getting nuclear weapons is more important than preventing war between Iran and Israel. That’s up fourteen percentage points from 52% last July.

Just 23% now say preventing war between Iran and Israel is more important than stopping Iran from getting nuclear weapons.

66% voters want to prevent Iran from getting nuclear weapons. You can’t ask Iran to stop and get that prevention. Been there, still doing that. Tried it with Iraq WMD and fought our own war to make certain. Not anxious to do that on our own, or even to do that with Iran. So all the more reason to let Israel do it for themselves, and we benefit with what we want, to prevent Iran from going nuclear. Yet only 49% admit the only way that it CAN be done, and support Israel to do it with our alliance in reserve.

maverick muse on May 9, 2009 at 8:09 AM

If Obama wants to be anyone’s messiah, he’d better find a way for the Iranian’s targeted by Sharia to find alliance with SOMEONE besides Achmedinajad or the fundamentalist mullahs.

Coincidence?

Seems as if everything is breaking down under obama, not just relations with Israel—our way of life. Michelle Obama said this if you will recall. Wonder when/if the folks will notice or if, by some chance they actually do, will care. Beginning to think it’s a blessing to be old these days. Won’t have as much time to watch the country go to h–l. I’m depressed, must be the rainy day here.

jeanie on May 9, 2009 at 8:40 AM

Just another depressing comment to go with the one above: You’ll notice that while our way of life may be deteriorating, the obama’s has stepped up considerably. I guess the ‘share the wealth’ and ‘austerity’ don’t apply to the family in the WH. Where are my 450$ sneakers? Where are my several daily wardrobe changes? Where is my personal chef? Guess living small doesn’t apply to the WH after all, they won.(we lost!)

jeanie on May 9, 2009 at 8:52 AM

America should apologize to the world.
Yes. I agree this is a material intent. But to what avail? Exactly what is the reward?

ericdijon on May 8, 2009 at 10:04 PM

The rest of the world – except for Israelis of course – will love us. Approval seems to be Obama’s driving priority.

Once there was a way to get back homeward
Once there was a way to get back home
Sleep, pretty darling, do not cry
And i will sing a lullaby
Golden slumbers fill your eyes
Smiles awake you when you rise
Sleep pretty darling do not cry
And i wil sing a lullaby

Once there was a way to get back homeward
Once there was a way to get back home
Sleep, pretty darling, do not cry

Golden slumbers fill your eyes
Smiles awake you when you rise
Sleep pretty darling do not cry

Oh, you’re gonna carry that weight
Carry that weight a long time
Oh, you’re gonna carry that weight
Carry that weight a long time

I never give you my pillow.
I only sebd you my invitations.
And in the middle of the celebrations
I break down.

Boy, you’re gonna carry that weight
Carry that weight a long time
Boy, you’re gonna carry that weight
Carry that weight a long time.

So, general agreement here that Obama is in the business of ‘reforming’ the country to his all seeing, all wise, we’ll eventually see the merits of his ways, image. This great and wise God looks down approvingly at all the little black specks below not only doing his bidding but loving it. Then He throws crumbs now and then to the unionized and zombieized segments of the little black specks. Woe to those of you who may want to be white specks—crush! crush! Lordy me–where are we headed and why is most of the population not noticing what a dangerous man this is?

[A senior 'Israeli'] official said the new administration no longer seems to see Israel as a “special” or “extraordinary” state…

Welcome to the club Israel!
B. Hussein Obama and his cadre of thugs & thugettes don’t see the USA as exceptional either. Are enough of us Americans connecting-the-dots yet? Or are we still in a state of leftist media induced denial of Barack’s 20 year swimfest in the anti-American anti-Israel cesspool with Jerimiah Wright, Louis Farrakhan, Bill Ayres, Acorn, Edward Said, Ali Abunimah, Rashid Khalidi et al?

Those of you that read Joel Rosenberg and/or the Bible.

The battle of Gog & Magog in Ezekiel 38 & 39, when Russia, Iran and many other nations attack Israel, NO OTHER NATION COMES TO THEIR AID. Only recently could you say that maybe the U.S. wouldn’t come to Israel’s aid if there was an attack.

Of course God will destroy Israel’s enemies and many will become believer’s.

Interesting times we live in.
