The $357,000 photo

Worth every penny, baby. Cost of psychological damage to me and the rest of New York not included.

Louis Caldera, the White House official who approved the flight, is now nestled snugly alongside Rev. Wright, Father Pfleger, and about 20 other people under the Messiah’s bus. Culprit or fall guy? Here’s what Cheney told Scott Hennen yesterday:
Hennen: Our guest, former Vice President Dick Cheney on the Scott Hennen Show and The Common Sense Club today. By the way, there is an incredible double standard here in the media coverage. Is that frustrating to you at all? I look at the recent flap over the photo opportunity for Air Force One above New York City, and I imagine had that happened — not that it ever would — in the Bush administration, how the media would have hyperventilated over that forever! And it’s been forgotten. We’re led to believe somehow the President was mad about it. Is it possible for the White House Military Office now under a political appointee, different from your administration when it was a military officer that held that post, that the White House or some high-level staff didn’t know about that?
Cheney: I would assume that some senior staffer signed off on that. Especially a mission with, with in effect what is the backup for Air Force One, there are two of those planes, big 747’s. Either one can function as Air Force One anytime the President is on it. I used them a couple of times during our administration for special trips. You know, they don’t turn a wheel without a lot of people knowing about it and signing off and approving it. A pilot can’t just go out there and get on board and take it for a spin.
I guess Caldera counts as a “senior staffer.” If you want to read the memo, here’s the PDF via Drudge.

Has anyone explained exactly why they needed a photo of Air Force One? Are they going to post the plane for sale on ebay? Is there some reason why Air Force One needs to be promoted? Who the hell would use this photo?
AmericanUnderground on May 8, 2009 at 5:39 PM
And what is on the horizon? New Jersey. Not Manhattan, one of the most recognizable and beautiful city skylines in the world. New Jersey. Just thought I’d point that out.

I want to see the photos of the inside of the plane. I want to know who all was along for the ride. Who knows maybe Schummer or Hillary were fund raising by giving rides on the big plane. Don’t need to see another photo of the outside, as this plane is in the air more than my car is on the road.
hillbilly on May 8, 2009 at 5:40 PM
That is in no way what any PR person would be satisfied with as a usable promo photo. That looks like a happenstance photo they were so relieved that someone took, so they could offer it up as smoke and mirrors.
That said, such an out of focus, murky picture does effectively represent the current administration.
caygeon on May 8, 2009 at 5:40 PM
Nice shot of New Jersey from several thousand feet.
Where are the photos of New York City?
coldwarrior on May 8, 2009 at 5:40 PM
Plausible for regular shots taken of fighter jets and posted to an Air Force webpage. Not so plausible for a $357,000 flight involving the president’s private plane and two fighter jets and absolute secrecy, for a picture that’s supposed to be a stock photo of Air Force One.

That’s why Obama has the MSM. They cover his weak areas. And by “cover,” I mean cover up.
Loxodonta on May 8, 2009 at 5:46 PM
Can someone use the time of the supposed photo and confirm that the boat by the statue of liberty in the photo was there at the same time?
That’s probably a ferry to the statue of liberty park and I’m sure there is a log of when the ferry was leaving that it seems to be doing.

I saw a better photo for $10. And it was PhotoShopped!
GarandFan on May 8, 2009 at 5:48 PM
It’s a horrible photo hardly worth the half million dollars it cost or the serious emotional distress caused by this hideous act of incompetence by the Obama White House. We got a chuckle with the photoshopping of Air Force One and the Statue of Liberty and other landmarks, within days of this malfeasance, but given the actual photo that was released, the Air Force and Parks Department would be wise to photoshop all photos in the future, because this photo is worse than any one of us could have done in similar circumstances. It is terribly uninviting and no one would say, WOW, what a great shot of our Lady Liberty and Air Force One. It’s a tragedy that so many had to be so scared for such paltry results.
eaglewingz08 on May 8, 2009 at 5:48 PM
At that angle, the picture of Lady Liberty with Manhattan would have included ground zero in the background. The choice of photo angle was probably the only time they thought about 9/11 in this whole fiasco.
AverageJoe on May 8, 2009 at 5:49 PM
That is a good thought. Other photos on the WH site do have the EXIF info still attached.
Bad news – It’s not on the WH website, and the WH Military Office is not on the web separately, so I don’t believe that info is out there.

He was a little embarrassed that his IPOD scheme with his speeches was not so well recieved or thoughtfull.

We won’t be needin no stinkin liberty under a Pinnochio Presidency.

The original image is creepy. The brightened image used by ABC & CBS just looks like a stupid postcard. Do they actually think these things through? Do they poll them?
Which is worse for our permanent campaign? Making Obama look sinister or stupid?
Or, do they just go with their gut manipulative instinct?

We know Caldera “signed off” on the joy ride. What we still don’t know is who put the proposal on his desk — or how many other folks signed off on it too.
Considering how many agencies were involved, I can easily see a memo making the rounds asking, “Any problems with this?”

Another area to look…. what time was the joyride. Where would the shadow of the statue be during a spring morning in NYC. The shadow appears to be hidden by the statue itself. Plus the direction of the shot was obviously chosen so that the sun would be perfect to light the plane without any shadows (and we cant see the planes shadow on the ground) With all this info, I’m sure someone can calculate the approximate time of the shot.
AverageJoe on May 8, 2009 at 6:05 PM
My friend’s 12-year-old son could have done this in about 20 minutes with access to stock images. I still want to know who was on the plane.

Viper1 on May 8, 2009 at 6:11 PM
That is what would show up in just about any pic taken from that angle. The only way to get a pic of the Statue with Manhattan in the background would require a shot showing Lady Liberty’s face in profile. Or even the back of her head.

I just got up from a nap so my head may be a little groggy or I just have never paid attention to the little details of planes before- but is that the backside of AF1?- the American Flag on the tail is painted as seen from the back. I assume that the staircase side is on the otherside? So they give us a New Jersey Skyline and AF1 from the back that cost over 300,000 plus the panicked NYers and think we aren’t going to put on our tinfoil hats?
I too would like to see the manifest. Keeping pressing for the FOIA on this MM.

Thought I’d go ahead and be the gazillionth person to say that I have seen better photos done with photoshop. This is WAY worse than the wagyu beef and Obambi, who has a perfectly good office for a presser, without good reason jumps into AF1 to wherever, whenever he wants to feel really like he’s really “moooovin’ on up!” a la George Jefferson.
marybel on May 8, 2009 at 7:06 PM
This is not “the” photo. This is a snapshot taken with a handheld camera through the plexiglas canopy of the F-16. You can clearly see the reflection from the inside of the canopy just above the nose of the 747. The camera autofocused on the 747, but the Lady Liberty is out of focus. And what is with the change in light at the edge of Liberty Island?
You don’t spend $375,000 to get a photo and then have a pilot snap a photo through the canopy using a $110 handheld digital camera. A photo mission has special equipment to take a crisp and clear picture. This is a shot the pilot took for his own scrapbook. We’re lucky he didn’t have his finger over the lens. This was not the work of a professional photographer using professional equipment.
Go to another AF1 beauty shot and compare the quality of photography. The one over Mount Rushmore is beautiful. AF1 over the Grand Canyon is so clear, it looks like you can reach out and touch the aircraft and the ground miles beyond.
This is garbage. A junior staffer could have done a much better job with photoshop in a couple of hours.
gridlock2 on May 8, 2009 at 7:09 PM
It took this long for the WH techno-geeks to apply WhiteOut® to the fuselage in order to disguise the big “O”.
Neither the photo nor the assorted explanations pass the smell test.
onlineanalyst on May 8, 2009 at 7:16 PM
Is it me, or does that not look like the plane from that day? I watched scads of videos and never saw the United States of America. What I saw was the Presidential Seal, which is not on this plane. Further, who took this pic? There would have had to be another plane SOMEWHERE because the F-16’s were way behind the plane, not right next to it. Plus, how do you take a pic of a moving plane out of a plane that moves faster?
Nothing about this adds up.
UnderstandingisPower on May 8, 2009 at 7:21 PM
The sun angle looks about right for 10am in spring although I would have thought the time was a bit earlier as the shadows are quite long. However, I’m not expert so will give that a pass.
However, surely someone could have adjusted the filter so it doesn’t show sepia/brown tones. I’m guessing that the canopy is tinted. Does an F-16 have a brown-tinted canopy?
I agree with prev posters. Looks like a souvenir snapshot by the F-16 pilot. NOT an official photo.
And why the heck was all this kept a secret anyway?
Doesn’t compute yet.

amkun on May 8, 2009 at 7:31 PM
I made this comment in the headlines section above…
The SOL is almost indistinguishable in that photo. It appears the photographer was using nothing more than a 50mm lens. To get a decent shot, the plane the photographer was in should have been further away and the photographer should have been using a fast and long zoom lens. That would have made the image of the SOL appear much larger compared to the 747 (not Air Force One, since BO wasn’t on it, or was he?). A different angle could have cut out much of NJ. This is a crap photo that a professional wouldn’t have taken, unless it was the worst of the bunch. There’s more to this story.
Who was the photographer, too?
behiker on May 8, 2009 at 7:41 PM
This is obviously the work of the same person who “photographed” a document with a perfectly round seal on a fold where a real seal would have bent with the fold.

Apparently since the guy was so successful at passing that one off as a real, Obama enlisted him for this one too.
justincase on May 8, 2009 at 7:48 PM
IF it’s even real, they need a refund. My dogs can take better pics knocking the camera off the coffee table.
Why bother taking a picture from that distance? If we didn’t know, who would recognize the Statue of Liberty in the background? It’s not even recognizable.
ProudinNC on May 8, 2009 at 8:02 PM
And Caldera wanders in front an on coming bus.
Jim708 on May 8, 2009 at 8:04 PM
So the photo-op is a pretty crap cover story. There was no photo op at all. What about the other one – the pilots needed training to shoot approaches to nearby airport.
Surely that could be done in a simulator, like any commercial 747 pilot has to do regularly? VC-25s aren’t that dissimilar in terms of flying, so why this elaborate op with a stupid cover story?
Assume the second cover story is also crap. Again, why the secrecy surrounding what they really were doing up there?
And if it was either one of the above reasons, why not release something like this the week before in all NY papers and on air, and repeat it until mission over?
“Residents of NYC, on date x you will see a plane with AF one markings flying low over NYC, accompanied by two military fighters. Please do not panic, this is a scheduled operation to increase the level of national security and at no times will pose any threat to your safety.
If you would like to take some photos of AF1 while flying over Manhattan, the best times will be x and the best photo spots will be x. Again, there is no cause for alarm, the operation is perfectly safe and has the sanction of the White House.”
The fact they didn’t do this is either gross incompetency or something more sinister, and still doesn’t explain who was up there and why.

Do we know for a fact that Obama was not in the plane, or country, for that matter? It wouldn’t surprise me if he just nonchalantly asked the pilot to cruise over the city for the hell of it, narcissist that he is.
And then cobble up some bullshit explanation for it.

I am certainly no fan of Dear Leader. But, I don’t get exercised over $ spent on military crews getting flight time…they need it for training and, as has been said, AF 1 has been previously photographed over national landmarks. That said, scaring the crap out of NYC citizens is a hanging offense on its own.
The mystery to me is why Dear Leader put the lid on what really was a non-event (aside from scaring the crap out of NYC citizens). I thought there was going to be an “O” Logo on the tail instead of a US Flag. That makes me think that there were nefarious reasons but I can’t figure out what they would be.

caygeon on May 8, 2009 at 10:37 PM
This was a PR event for an upcoming George Lucas movie called “Red Tails”, which is nothing more than a re-make of “Tuskeegee Airmen”. The big red tail on the F-16 is the only one in the AF inventory, and it is on an aircraft from Alabama. The PR footage is so toxic right now we’ll most likely never see it in its intended venue, which would be a trailer for the movie, or some tie-in between Obama (first black president) and the Red Tails (first black pilots).
This story is gonna be buried for years. But mark my words, one day there will be another documentary about the Red Tails, and the footage obtained during the flight will appear.

I loved the photo of Lady Liberty giving the finger to Obambi’s “Scare Force One”. Perfect.
Meanwhile, inconsistencies from my POV; some have already been mentioned above:
* “Hi Res” shot available on the web is nowhere near normal size of hi-res photos commonly available on Defenselink;
* No EXIF data embedded in the file;
* Canopy reflection evident in the photo;
* Depth of field too narrow for a “beauty” pass that would take in both VC-25 and Statue of Liberty;
* Photo not listed in the “multimedia/photos” section on Defenselink; and
* Poor angle of photo where no portion of NYC skyline is visible.
Also given the historical importance of the Red Tails, you’d think Obambi would *want* the Red Tail F-16 in the photo…hmmm.
This pic was nothing more than a “toss a scrap out to feed the media” moment along with the Caldera weekend bus thump.
Personally, my money is on the likelihood that the VC-25 flight was a tourist fly-by of NYC filled with Dem officials, given the cover of a “photo shoot” to hide the fact that it was nothing more than a very expensive VIP joy ride.
Wanderlust on May 8, 2009 at 11:23 PM
Source please? Haven’t seen any pix of the Lawn Dart(s) on this mission. The military provides resources for lots of flicks (if they are complimentary…and there haven’t been many over the last few years). Most are paid for by the movie. A movie on the Tuskeegee Airmen would probably be worthy regardless of the President. Please…not trying to cover Dear Leader: let’s be accurate and source it. There’s so much to choose from with this clown that we don’t need to appear to be making stuff up (not that you were).

Which is why for a publicity photo it’s a horrid shot — the angle does as much as possible to diminish the impact of the Statue of Liberty, because at best it emphasizes the base, and turns the statue itself into some miniature desktop version you could get in the Liberty Island souvenir story. and the positioning of AF1 makes the Jersey City and Bayonne warehouses above the fuselage catch the viewers’ eye as much as the statue below.
A lower angle shot using a macro lens of AF1 on a flight pattern taking off out of JFK over Brooklyn would have yielded just as good or better publicity shots, and by staying within the normal Queens/Brooklyn takeoff-landing parameters, scared several hundred thousand fewer people.
