Obama threatens CA to protect union wages

posted at 12:15 pm on May 8, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

Earlier, in writing about California’s fiscal meltdown, I noted that Barack Obama has threatened the state with a suspension of its stimulus funds, on which Sacramento depended for its budgetary calculations.  The story behind that threat is worth pursuing.  In attempting to bridge a huge shortfall, the state lowered compensation to for home health care workers, saving $74 million. Obama wants those cuts rescinded, and it’s not hard to see why:

Reporting from Sacramento — The Obama administration is threatening to rescind billions of dollars in federal stimulus money if Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and state lawmakers do not restore wage cuts to unionized home healthcare workers approved in February as part of the budget.

Schwarzenegger’s office was advised this week by federal health officials that the wage reduction, which will save California $74 million, violates provisions of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. Failure to revoke the scheduled wage cut before it takes effect July 1 could cost California $6.8 billion in stimulus money, according to state officials. …

The wages at issue involve workers who care for some 440,000 low-income disabled and elderly Californians. The workers, who collectively contribute millions of dollars in dues each month to the influential Service Employees International Union and the United Domestic Workers, will see the state’s contribution to their wages cut from a maximum of $12.10 per hour to a maximum of $10.10.

In other words, Obama has unleashed his inner “madman” in the exact same cause he did with Chrysler and GM bondholders.  He’s doing it to support the unions.  The SEIU appealed directly to Obama, as the LA Times reports, when the budget cuts hit.  Rather than rely on California to determine its own compensation plan, Obama simply threatened them with economic ruin if they didn’t fall into line.  I’m surprised he didn’t threaten to sic the White House press corps on Arnold Schwarzenegger.

The irony here is that Sacramento is doing the exact same thing to its own citizens.  With most of them poised to shoot down higher taxes and more spending in a series of referendums next week, Schwarzenegger has published his intent to close firehouses and police stations, and to empty prisons and let convicts free on the streets.  That “madman theory” gets around, doesn’t it?

This should make clear Obama’s prioritie as President.  He couldn’t care less about California defaulting or automakers going under, but a $2/hr pay cut for 400,000 union workers is the center of his universe.  I’d suggest changing “Hail to the Chief” to “Look for the Union Label,” but Obama would probably approve it.

Look at these two statements:

Second, from the LAT:

How many workers are actually affected? I’d find it hard to fathom that there are 400k home health care workers in CA, but I could be wrong…

Reporting from Sacramento — The Obama administration is threatening to rescind billions of dollars in federal stimulus money if Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and state lawmakers do not restore wage cuts to unionized home healthcare workers approved in February as part of the budget.

LOL. The Precedent wouldn’t let California go bankrupt, as that would just scare the rest of the nation about the same idiotic policies being pursued to bankrupt all of us. Besides, the cascading effects of a California debt default would make last October’s credit crisis look like child’s play.

The GOP had better hammer California about their stupidity in ad after ad after ad, including a pounding about how the morons in that state cared more about pursuing embryonic stem cell research (to be liberally fashionable) than keeping themselves a viable entity (kind of funny, when you think about it).

The question is why does anyone work or pay taxes?

Odie1941 on May 8, 2009 at 12:28 PM

Good start, but in fairness to Ogabe, that’s $80,000 per working hour, of which there are, say, 40* in a week. By this math, that’s $3.2 million/week.

But I don’t think the number of workers being 400,000 sounds right:

BKeyser on May 8, 2009 at 12:29 PM

But even if it’s 10% of that, we’re still talking about $320k/week or maybe $16 million per year. That’s a lot of money here in flyover country, much of which will probably be funneled to Ogabe’s next campaign. I’m sure he thinks that’s worth going all madman over.

*For which they get paid. I doubt they’d actually work that, if they’re anything like the teachers.

You’d better get it straight that it’s not a bunch of boy scouts you’re up against… We’re after power and we mean it… There’s no way to rule innocent men. The only power any government has is the power to crack down on criminals. Well, when there aren’t enough criminals one makes them. One declares so many things to be a crime that it becomes impossible for men to live without breaking laws. Who wants a nation of law-abiding citizens? What’s there in that for anyone? But just pass the kind of laws that can neither be observed nor enforced or objectively interpreted – and you create a nation of law-breakers – and then you cash in on guilt. Now that’s the system, Mr. Reardon, that’s the game, and once you understand it, you’ll be

You can’t make a socialist state without having the “workers” out mobilizing for you.

Unions used to be about protecting the worker. Anymore they’re about brokering their power. Remember that the unions were the precursors to communism/socialism, so this is perfect for President O’lefty.

BadgerHawk on May 8, 2009 at 12:42 PM

From the original post, Ahnuld was trying to save the state $74 million by cutting wages $2 an hour. At 40 hours per week, 52 weeks per year, that’s 2,080 hours per year or a $4,160 per year wage cut per worker. If that saved a total of $74 million, the number of workers affected would be

74,000,000 / 4,160 = 17,788.

Still, Obama is playing hardball here. Threatening to withhold $6.8 billion over $74 million is 92-to-1 odds, and how many California taxpayers will have to suffer for the desires of 17,788 union workers?

Ahnuld should probably take this to the Supreme Court. An interesting Tenth Amendment case!

Swap “union members” with “war veterans” and it sounds just like Zimbabwe.

Kind of short on the explanation, there. Are we looking at two projections by the white house (with and without “stimulus”) vs. two actual data points?

The entire graph was put out by the White House, with the exception of the two triangles, which are the actual data points.

The stimulus, even under the most positive of light, hasn’t accomplished anything. Long term its made things worse.
