Obama switches to “borders first” rhetoric on immigration

posted at 11:36 am on May 8, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

During the campaign, Barack Obama ridiculed John McCain’s belated insistence on fixing border security before passing immigration reform.  Now, though, Obama’s budget increases both the employee-verification system pushed by George Bush and the personnel and resources for border interdiction.  Republicans cautiously cheered the change in direction, but think Obama just doesn’t have a handle on border issues:

On the thorniest of political issues, President Obama has embraced the enforcement-first position on immigration that he criticized during last year’s presidential campaign, and he now says he can’t move forward with the type of comprehensive bill he wants until voters are convinced that the borders can be enforced.

Having already backed off his pledge to have an immigration bill this year, Mr. Obama boosted his commitment to enforcement in the budget released Thursday. The spending blueprint calls for extra money to build an employee-verification system and to pay for more personnel and equipment to patrol the border.

This security-first stance is not unlike that of President George W. Bush, Bush Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff and Republican presidential candidate Sen. John McCain, who said their immigration bill failed in 2007 because voters didn’t trust the government to be serious about enforcement.

“If the American people don’t feel like you can secure the borders,” Mr. Obama said at his press conference last week, “then it’s hard to strike a deal that would get people out of the shadows and on a pathway to citizenship who are already here, because the attitude of the average American is going to be, ‘Well, you’re just going to have hundreds of thousands of more coming in each year.’ ”

Republicans say the shift is a sign that Mr. Obama, who during the campaign repeatedly called the issue a priority, is uncertain how to move forward.

It could just be triangulation, too.  Obama may not have done much in his brief career in the Senate, but he certainly could count votes.  Enough Democrats had issues with an amnesty-first approach that he knows another try could do significant damage to his standing on Capitol Hill. Offering a sop on border security could put opponents off-balance enough to get comprehensive reform through the Senate.

It could also do a lot of damage to his chances for re-election.  The reaction by the electorate could be even worse than it was in 2007.  When irate voters flooded Senate phone lines with their opposition, the economy was humming along and unemployment was low.  Now, with joblessness skyrocketing and no end in sight to the downturn, a move to legalize illegal aliens could very well prove a game-changer and generate lasting resentment among the working-class populists Obama carefully courted in 2008.

Border security is a safer arena for Obama in a deep recession.  Obama has apparently realized this.  Comprehensive-reform and amnesty advocates will almost certainly be disappointed as long as the economy continues to sink.

GarandFan on May 8, 2009 at 11:48 AM

Immigration is a self-inflicted wound by the GOP. The Bush machine devised Hispanic vote as a counterweight to conservatives and encouraged unlimited immigration (both legal and illegal), first under Reagan and then under George Bush. The Dems are always better on this issue. Until the moderate-conservative split isn’t resolved, GOP will not have a credible policy on immigration.

Not that it really matters (as this administration is working to do nothing but kill the US) but border security is a red herring. Border security means absolutely nothing without strong interior enforcement. And, anyone who votes for a “pathway to citizenship” should be held for treason, as that is nothing but a direct attack on the US and our sovereignty, and an attack that will absolutely destroy this nation.

obladioblada on May 8, 2009 at 11:57 AM

And if you are a state trooper…and pick up a truck-load of illegals…let them go. Obama’s to cut funding to states that pick up illegals.

Killing the State Criminal Alien Assistance Program (SCAPP) would save $400 million, according to Obama’s budget for fiscal 2010 released Thursday. It’s one of the largest non-defense discretionary cuts proposed in the president’s budget.

Obama says, now, let’s top them at the border….but once inside…they are free…home free…free as ACORN’s falling from the tree…and free to vote Democrat.

In a few months, as a further budget cut, there will be no border enforcement. Pull up the fence posts, plant shrubbery instead, for all the good it will do.

The only nation in the industrialized world that essentially has no border enforcement…

Try sneaking into Mexico sometime…from Texas or from Guatemala…and apply for benefits, or a job, or try to rent a house.

Upstater85 on May 8, 2009 at 12:00 PM

Obama has no intention of securing the southern border, or keeping illegal aliens from taking U.S. jobs. He already has Napolitano giving visas and work permits to the illegals the government catches working for U.S. employers. In a few months, Obama will talk about how he has significantly “reduced” the number of illegals working in the U.S. He won’t bother to mention that he accomplished that “reduction” in illegal workers by giving them all work permits and visas to make them legal — and nobody in the MSM will bother to question him about his claims. It’ll just be reported as another triumph of Obama’s policies.

littleguy on May 8, 2009 at 12:03 PM

I think a move to give the Border Patrol more equipment and money is great, but they also need to allow them to do their jobs, untie their hands. Protect and back them against the Mexican government.
I agree this is a move to shut up the opposition that says enforcing the law and using E-Verify to keep illegal aliens from getting jobs that Americans NEED now.
They can now say, ‘Well, we are enforcing the law, now shut up and sit down you xenophobe racist bigots’.
Then, they will give amnesty to those that are here illegally and we will have years and years of democratic rule as the welfare/cheese eating class vote for more and more freebies.
And soon, they will all flee to Canada once the United States has become a third world country that they fled before.
Obama is a liar and he does NOTHING that does not directly benefit his power trip.

This kills me. Even the most mush-minded of liberals would think nothing of locking the door to their apartment against a potential intruder, or finding an intruder already present, exhaust all legal remedies in having the unwanted party removed from their personal ‘space;’ yet when you change the word ‘home’ to ‘country,’ all the basic understandings of what is right and just and allowable magically disappear from the liberal’s lexicon.

What is our ‘country’ but our ‘home’ writ large?

You Gringos should not get your hopes up too high. In fact you should not get them up at all. This is just a head fake from your current el Presidente as I advised him to do but it only delays my plans for a short time. Your Grandfathers kept you from having to learn German or Japanese or be lamp shades. But YOU ARE NOT the men or women that they were, not even close.

Once we get our amnesty, we will all come to your country. We will all have at least 10 kids and in a generation we will overwhelm and deport most of you Gringos! Some of you, if you learn Spanish real well, we might let you stay to pick our lettuce or mow our lawns or take care of OUR children in what used to be your houses.

Those who don’t learn Spanish will be deported to Alaska. That is until Al Gore’s global warming heats things up and we want Alaska too, then we will deport you all to New Orleans. It will probably all be under water by then anyway. I hope you Gringos can swim, he, he, he. My bad!!!

So give it up and LEARN SPANISH! You should probably all buy Mexican flags too and fly them in your front yard and on your pickup trucks. If you already have an American flag there it is alright if you keep it, as
long as you fly it upside down and below our great Mexican flag.

Now repeat after me – I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of Mucho Grande Mexico, and to the Republic for which it use to stand, one nation under me, with everything for us, and nothing for you.

And remember Gringos,

Republicans say the shift is a sign that Mr. Obama, who during the campaign repeatedly called the issue a priority, is uncertain how to move forward.

I think that’s right, Ed. O’Bonehead spewed some open-borders rhetoric a month ago (or so), apparently drunk on his ability to get most Americans to believe his lies at least once. I’m guessing that any change since then is Axelhead’s belated recognition that the public didn’t care for open borders from this administration any more than the last.
