Dems smack Obama for Gitmo fumbles

Politico reports that Democrats on Capitol Hill are fuming over Barack Obama’s incompetent handling of the Guantanamo Bay detention issue. They’re shocked, shocked to find that a man with no executive experience made promises that now look almost impossible to keep, and that have left them twisting in the wind with constituents not thrilled to have al-Qaeda terrorists in the neighborhood:
Now Democrats are ganging up on President Barack Obama’s plans to shut down the Guantanamo Bay prison. Or rather, the president’s lack of planning for how to shutter the prison and how to handle the detainees.
“They say, ‘We’re going to close Guantanamo.’ OK, fine. How are you going to do that? That’s the question,” Rep. Neal Abercrombie (D-Hawaii) told POLITICO Thursday. “They should have had that worked out from the get-go.”
“There’s this vague game plan that now we’re going to leave Guantanamo,” Abercrombie said. “It’s allowed it to become a political football.” …
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, who supports the Obama plan, admits that there’s no clear answer yet on Guantanamo: “The issue is, how are we going to close it?”
And House Appropriations Committee Chairman Dave Obey (D-Wis.) has told the White House that “when they have a plan, they’re welcome to come back and talk to us.”
Maybe they should have had a plan before making the promise. It’s not like they haven’t had time; Obama’s been making that same promise for over two years, as a candidate and then as President. He had access to intelligence and military briefings, as well as the luxury of hundreds of advisers.
Given the priority Obama gave this in the campaign, Democrats can be forgiven for their anger over Obama’s complete fumble of this issue. It appears that Obama thought he could simply dump the detainees in other countries and that he’d find our allies more than willing to set terrorists free in their countries. After getting an almost-complete snub from Europe (France agreed to take one), Obama seems lost.
The most interesting part of this story is the extent to which Democrats are willing to go public in rebuking their President. Abercrombie almost sounded eager to get his objections on the public record. Reid and Obey at least don’t mind it. That tells us that even Democrats realize that Americans don’t want Gitmo detainees in the US, either in prison or released altogether, as in the case of the Uighers. And that they’re willing to critcize not just the policy but the embarrassing executive performance of Obama makes that message even more powerful.
However, Obama’s their candidate. For the belated realization that a person’s first executive job shouldn’t be in the Oval Office, Capitol Hill Democrats get the Captain Louis Renault Award:

I say that Rep. Neal Abercrombie (D-Hawaii) should receive most of the GITMO inmates. Hawaii’s climate is a lot like Cuba. You would not want to upset the delicate inmates. After all didn’t Hawaii just proclaim that it was going to have an Islam day? What a wonderful event that could be. I say ship all the GITMO inmates to Hawaii on Islam day and let them live in million dollar villas on the beach (taxpayer funded of course) and the world will be a peaceful & happy place once again.
izoneguy on May 8, 2009 at 3:01 PM
What’s really sad is that all of this hem & hawing from the Dems is probably just window dressing.
The terrorists will still get released, Obama will still get what he wants – now the Dems will claim they “tried” to get Obama to change his mind, etc.
It’s all calculated, it’s all manufactured outrage. If it weren’t, these same Dems would have been howling about this from day one.

What I see here more than anything is that Obama appears to believe in his own legend…that with just a few magic words, eloquently delivered, the world’s conflicting forces will all fall into place and we can live in peace.

right2bright on May 8, 2009 at 3:05 PM
This is the familiar Obama pattern.
Step 1: Obama makes a foolish statement, usually to outflank his more sober and intelligent political opposition.
Step 2: Obama catches flak from all sides for saying such a stupid thing.
Step 3: In order to prove what a brave and consistent guy he is, Obama enshrines his mistake as a disasterous policy.
Step 4: The policy blows up spectacularly.
Step 5: Obama is celebrated for making the tough choices, standing on his word, etc…
Step 6: Blame George Bush.

Since Gitmo is still open for now, Obama could solve this problem very easily by signing an Executive Order which repeals his previous Executive Order to close Gitmo, in which case the Bush policy is restored, and the Gitmo detainees stay at Gitmo.
But this would require the humility to admit a mistake. Is that above Obama’s pay grade?
Steve Z on May 8, 2009 at 3:12 PM
They pandered to Obama. They exalted him as thee brightest, smartest, cutest, sexiest president ever. They sold him, like he was infallible.
Now, when the oil on the fire spreads, they want to distance themselves from him, as if they had nothing to do, with making him, what he is today.
A spoiled, arrogant, narcissist. Who believes, a flash of his smile, and a wave of his hand, and all will bow to his will, and do as he commands.

In most communities in the United States, we are informed if a sexual predator, to just about any degree of seriousness, is living in our neighborhood. There is a list we can consult, so we can shun or discriminate against them in order to keep children safe.
However, the Obama Administration seems to think it’s perfectly acceptable to move a person trained in terrorist tactics into an unsuspecting, innocent community (and give them walking around money to boot!) with no notification, no safeguards whatsoever, to those citizens be they children, single folks, or families.
This is dangerous and moronic and totally unacceptable.

Gee Harry Reid is the majority leader of the Senate who has been calling for the closing of GITMO at least as long as Mr. Obama, and he has access to all the intel on the detainees there. Same with Peelousy and Biden. You’d think that they might have had a serious plan with respect to the enemy combatants and would have discussed that plan with their party’s nominee for President before he got elected or at least during his first hundred days, and that the democraps would not play politics to hurt our national security; but then you would not be realistic about the vileness and ineptitude of the democraps.

I’m sorry that it makes me giggle when our president does something foolish. But it does. We tried to tell people he didn’t have enough experience to go to the White House. We tried to tell them he wouldn’t really be able to do all those things he promised to do. We tried to tell them that some of the things he wanted to do were just plain bad for the country. They just wouldn’t have any of it. Now what are they going to do? I wouldn’t care if it were just the democrats who had to live with their decision…but it’s ALL OF US who are going to deal with the consequences of their poor choice in leadership. We’re basically screwed.

there is big argument on several Virginia blogs now that say that if Virginians were patriotic during this time of war, we would be happy to take the Gitmo prisoners. of course, these are really stupid dems making that argument.
bambi wanted to put the prisoners somewhere in alexandria/arlington which are right across the potomac from DC. can you imagine the clusterf*ck involved in air security with the prison combined with secret service security for bambi combined with regular passenger traffic from reagan nat’l & dulles. not to mention the ground traffic. not to mention the inherent danger to the nation’s capital (not that that wouldn’t be a bad thing).

The thing about Obama that annoys me the most is his hubris. It apparently never occurred to him that this might be a problem. He thought that he could charm, cajole, bribe, threaten anyone into anything.
He could just as easily have said they were going to make it a priority to find a solution to keeping people at Gitmo. He did not have to do the whole grandstanding executive order thing.
Terrye on May 8, 2009 at 6:37 PM
I’ve always been a big fan of the ‘reality show for terrorists’ idea. You know, do Survivorman and set a detainee down on, say, somewhere in Alaska. In December. Just the clothes on his back… say are they coming from Cuba? Bad luck, that.
Or do a Running Man show… yes be creative in the scenarios and make it pay-per-view: if you can survive to the end you get a free one-way ticket to Saudi Arabia! Or Algeria! Turkey! Once they are at the airport at their destination it is *their* problem.
Or be a stickler for things and shut down Alcatraz and put them there. Drop off food enough for all once a month. Then open a range on the wharfs… maybe a Barrett testing range… so the detainees can remember what it was like from where they came from and why Cuba was so very nice.
Of course we could just stop taking prisoners.
And follow the GC, call them spies and execute them. We would lose the INTEL and the problem of keeping them, and be well within the Conventions in doing so.
