Coming next: welfare cars!
posted at 12:55 pm on May 8, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
Ironically, this story comes to us via Howie Carr of the Boston Herald. Governor Deval Patrick of Massachusetts has the usual politician’s desire to promise a chicken in every pot, but a more expansive vision … and expensive as well. Not only will the Commonwealth give welfare recipients a free car, but they’ll throw in a free AAA membership on top of it:
And here I always thought “Welfare Cadillac” was just a stupid novelty song from 1970.
Now it turns out Guy Drake’s tune is another state entitlement here in Massachusetts, compliments of the Department of Transitional Assistance, formerly known as welfare.
In Gov. Deval Patrick’s Massachusetts, if you’re on the dole, you may be eligible to get a free car. So much for the budget Armageddon they keep talking about at the State House. …
Nice enough that the layabouts get a free car – plus the state picks up the tab for insurance, excise tax, title, registration, inspection, and approved repairs. The absolute frosting on the cake is a free AAA membership.
Please, try not to let this newest handout destroy your faith in the truth of the budget crisis. You’re just angry because you can’t afford AAA. But your average welfare leech needs guaranteed road service a lot more than you do.
Carr’s ire is directed at a program to shuffle donated cars to welfare recipients on the pledge that they will get jobs with their new-found independent transportation. The program has been in existence a while, but Patrick increased their budget by $30,000 this year despite the economic crash. The cars may be donated, but they cost the state about $6,000 each for repair, licensing, insurance — and of course that AAA membership.
What happened to public transportation? Doesn’t this amount to a repudiation of public transport for everyday commuting? Liberals in and out of government insist that public transportation is completely sufficient for commuters and encourage people to stop driving their cars to work. This seems to contradict that entire notion.
In the overall scheme, $430,000 a year may not amount to much, and the $6,000 per car may pale in comparison to food stamps, housing subsidies, and the like that a car and a job could prevent. However, everyone’s hurting right now, and government spends other people’s money. Patrick and his administration should be setting an example by trimming outlays, not expanding them, especially to hand out cars and club memberships that other Massachusetts residents have to forego themselves to save money.
On the other hand, maybe Patrick could start giving away the Stimu-Wagon:

Bought a house with a mortgage I could afford.
Bought a car (pickup) I could afford.
Bought my own AAA membership.
Got an education to further myself.
Have a steady job and pay taxes.
I must be a sucker.

I am so damned sick and tired of reading or hearing this bunch of crap. It’s the same with the term “Federal money.” The State never picks up the tab – the taxpayers do. There is no Federal money – only that which is confiscated from the People.
It is this bunch of crap that serves to befuddle the ignorant. To keep them in their place. Make them think that the State will take care of everything – not them.

Great, now Paterson will give cars away too. Way to go Deval.

I saw this yesterday. There are literally tens of thousands of brand new unsold cars and trucks sitting around. How long before Obama seizes them and gives them away to folks like ACORN workers to drive as they community organize their way to our destruction?

Obama won’t you buy me a Mercedes Benz.
My friends all drive Porsches, I must make amends.
Slacked off all my lifetime, no help from my friends.
So Obama won’t you buy me a Mercedes Benz
Obama won’t you buy me a color TV.
Dialing for dollars is trying to find me.
I wait for delivery each day until 3.
So Obama won’t you buy me a color TV.
Obama won’t you buy me a night on the town.
I’m counting on you Barry, please don’t let me down.
Prove that you love me and buy the next round.
Obama won’t you buy me a night on the town.
Obama won’t you buy me a Mercedes Benz
My friends all drive Porsches, I must make amends.
Slacked off all my lifetime, no help from my friends.
So Obama won’t you buy me a Mercedes Benz

2009 – a golden liberal era – liberals in this brief, shining golden age are heedlessly enjoying their smash-and-grab pigs-at-thet-trough spending orgy, before state by state, and federally, America suddenly turns belly up and goes bust.

Good golly, who knew that woman in the video after the Obama rally would be right? She won’t have to worry about paying her mortgage, or buying gas for her car. Holy Cow!!!
Some of us have to pay our way thru life, and our reward for that, is to pay for others to get thru life. Nice! This will be an incentive for them to get job? Don’t bet on it. This only encourages others to go on the dole to attain all these nice freebies.
capejasmine on May 8, 2009 at 1:06 PM
If AAA falls for this, they are fools.

Dr.Cwac.Cwac on May 8, 2009 at 1:08 PM
My gut reaction is “stupid liberals”
But I’m not so sure this is a bad thing. Public transportation doesn’t WORK. There’s too much sprawl.
These same people would’ve gotten free access to public transport anyway (that we taxpayers are also subsidizing). It’s more economically efficient to subsidize cars… it helps the car companies, it cuts down on public labor costs to maintain buses, bus employees (and bus employee unions)…
I’m not so sure it’s a bad thing.

Exactly, go into the inner city of Detroit at 2 in the morning and try to “tow” the car away…
right2bright on May 8, 2009 at 1:11 PM
And it is. In Boston at least. I do have a car but I walk to work or ride a T. Everyone around me rides T or commuter rail. I obviously could care less if you want to drive, and most people do. But if you work in the city it may not be reasonable for reasons such as the cost of parking and bad traffic.
This is such a bullshit. I spent $6,000 on a used Toyota Camry 6 years ago. It broke exactly once. Now we’ll have shops that fix shitty cars for the same price. What if they break again, and the guy hasn’t completed his “transition” to work?

Well while we’re at it…how about we all pay for some nice egyptian cotten sheets for their beds…and give them new beds, and furnishings. Oh, and vouchers for restaurants, so they can dine out, at least 5 times a week, if they choose. Oh, and let’s not forget to give them vouchers for Nieman Marcus. Nothing but the best.
Even if we can’t afford most of these things ourselvese, it’s nice to know someone will enjoy them. pfffffffffffft.

Leaving my Suffolk apartment this morning, I got into my 1984 Dodge Aries (K-Car) and headed off to work; after stopping for a Dunkin Donut and coffee, of course. I arrived at the Post Office, 15 minutes late, and rather than heading to my post at the stamp desk, I needed to use the bathroom. After another 20 minutes or so, I finally got to my station, only to find that no one was buying $0.42 stamps since the price is going up on Monday. I did sell a couple of $0.02 rolls, but that’s about it until lunch. I went to TGIF for a burger and fries, and ice cream for desert, got back late from lunch, unfortunately in the middle of a staff meeting, and learned that today would be my last day as a postal worker; I was being laid off…
Woo hoo! A new car!
Another brilliant move from the land of Camelot…

Hannity plays that “define socialism” game with people off the streets and he tries to get them to out themselves as socialists by asking what they think the government ought to do for people. Inevitably, it crosses the line and people are forced to, albeit quietly, deal with their inconsistencies. He asks if government should give transportation to people and, I think, only a few times he has asked specifically if they should give people cars. The folks generally balk at this suggestion and say something like, “that’s too far. No way.”
Whatdya know? Looks like the ever lowering benchmark just fell another notch.

I am still against subsidizing the poor’s transportation, but if we have to, it’s far better to take this program than it is to run 3/4-empty buses around town.
