Specter gets a sop from Reid, Durbin; Update: Reid fumbles again?
posted at 1:35 pm on May 7, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
A day after getting an epic snub from the Senate Democratic Caucus, Arlen Specter got a hastily-arranged Welcome Wagon gift from Harry Reid and Dick Durbin. Having had his deal with Specter rejected unanimously by his caucus, Reid prevailed on his lieutenant to cough up a plum subcommittee chair position for the newly-minted Pennsylvania Democrat. The world’s oldest rookie pronounced himself pleased:
Senate Democratic leaders have reached agreement with Sen. Arlen Specter to partially restore the party switcher’s status on the Judiciary Committee, by granting Specter the chairmanship of the Crime and Drugs Subcommittee.
Under the deal, which Senate Democratic aides outlined this morning, Senate Majority Whip Richard Durbin (D-Ill.) would give up the gavel of the prestigious post, which holds jurisdiction over most Justice Department activities. Durbin would take over a newly restored human rights subcommittee, which was dissolved at the beginning of the current 111th Congress because none of the committee members were available to run it.
It won’t, however, restore any of his seniority elsewhere, including on the full Judiciary Committee itself. Specter will still be last in line to question the upcoming nominee for the open Supreme Court slot vacated by David Souter. He still goes to the back of the line everywhere else, but now has a consolation prize — and a fairly significant, if singular, one.
Why did Durbin give up this “prestigious post,” as Shailagh Murray rightly calls it? Reid and Durbin apparently worried how Specter would react if he didn’t get something for his switch. They didn’t want to risk having an “angry former Republican” in the middle of Barack Obama’s Supreme moment in the coming weeks. This move allows everyone to save a little face after a disastrous fumble by Reid.
Update: Could Reid fumble this ball twice? Yes, he can! Pat Leahy has publicly rebuked both Reid and Durbin for promising the seat without checking first with him (via Brian Faughnan on Twitter):
Senate Judiciary Chairman Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.) on Thursday appeared to throw a little cold water on the Democratic leadership’s plan to give recent party-switcher Sen. Arlen Specter (Pa.) a plum subcommittee chairmanship.
Though Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) announced earlier in the day that he would relinquish the Crime and Drugs subpanel and take over a reconstituted Subcommittee on Human Rights and the Law, Leahy told reporters, “Nothing’s been worked out.” …
However, one Senate Democratic aide said Leahy is unlikely to deny Durbin — the No. 2 Senate Democrat — a gavel and that the chairman is probably just trying to get more funding for the committee so he doesn’t have to give up any of his chairman’s funds to create the new subcommittee.
Pass the popcorn, please. And I thought Barack Obama was an amateur!

Arlen has one big ego, and this might not be enough to stroke it. The SCOTUS hearings are where he wanted the spotlight.

But instead of it saying “reset,” it really said “F*** Off.”

Hearing that Ridge doesn’t want his Senate seat probably made Arlen happy enough today to smile about anything.

Shows you how valuable the “human rights subcommittee” is too. Dissolved for lack of anybody to run it, then Durbin “gives up” one chairmanship to make an essentially lateral move. (Apparently less influence, but he gets another “leadership” position to replace what he gave Specter).

This is where we need our “Carville” to ridicule Specter and his “demotion”.
Every Republican should be out demeaning him, and how pitiful of a beggar he had to become to try and save face.
Where are the Republican attack dogs? We don’t have any, and the dems have dozens….

Murtha has poured so much pork into his district that it is Murtha, Inc., a company town. The local economy is dependent on jobs and the federal payroll. Lose Murtha, lose your job, as he not so subtly reminds them on election day.
The key to carrying PA is often the suburbs, and that’s where a RINO has an advantage over a Dem. The Philly suburbs, who have enough problems with that crime-ridden cesspool across City Lin Avenue, aren’t likely to vote for a Dem machine politician. Junior Casey came from Scranton.

This would be a MASSIVE demotion for from the Crime and Drugs subcomittee.
It doesn’t make any sense that Durbin would do this. There’s got to be something else going on here.
Besides, how does this move help Specter in the primary or general elections? He can brag about being on the Crime and Drugs Subcommittee at all the Washington parties. But it doesn’t allocate spending, so why in the heck would Pennsylvania voters give a rat’s ass about it?

Jurisdiction over human rights, Justice Dept. activities, crime and drugs WILL keep Specter busy, given the Obama-Reid-Pelosi thugs. Question, will Specter placate his Democrat lords, push against the fascism, of join in the fascist party tactics.
Assassin.
With “leadership” like that, McCain never did “get” Conservatism as anything more than a sales pitch. That he hired this dead-beat-brain puts him in Specter’s fence sitting pose with both feet on the Democrat side, no straddling. They mouth off blaming conservatism because they failed their own sale’s pitch, as if pitching the same ol’ progressive Democrat spin is going to appeal NOW that Obama has everyone else in his strangle-hold for the “loyal opposition”. So much for the tone, attracting more conservative bees with vinegar than with honey. Not only are conservatives extinct, they never existed in the first place.
Mark Steyn delivered some great discussions on the conceptions of “moderate” — hope y’all caught the calls into the Limbaugh show earlier.

I think I know how these PA morons get elected over and over…. I had a friend (dem) who worked the polls in Philadelphia last November. She told me three things that I thought were shocking, but help explain Specter and Murtha: (1) almost everyone who voted had a “helper” accompany them into the voting booth because they couldn’t read the ballot on their own; (2) her precinct had some big contraption where you just pull a “D” lever and it automatically marked the ballot for every democrat running; and (3) Philly has something like ward bosses who just tell the voters who and what to vote for, and they do it. She said she didn’t talk to anyone the entire day who had not voted a straight democrat ticket.

A little perspective on Arlen…no matter what Hot Air hype may be, Arlen is done! But maybe Alluh can be like that great moderate Jesse Jackson and “keep hope alive!”
First Alluh pushed about the great war-chest of Arlen in hopes of scaring people away from Toomey.
Then Toomey gets in and Arlen becomes a switch hitter.
Next Alluh pushes a Ridge rumor and a Q poll to tell us all that Toomey can’t beat Arlen.
Then Hot Air doesn’t disclose that Toomey just raised $500,000 in 2 1/2 weeks. But Ridge found out nevertheless and knows he couldn’t raise $500,00 in 2 1/2 weeks if Robert Blake’s Money Train went barrelling up his ass. Plus he could not win in a Republican primary in PA. So he gets out.
Next Hot Air, in their headlines of Ridge not getting in the race, somehow thinks this is all great for Arlen. Problem is that Arlen will get a primary opponent and by December will see the handwriting on the wall…Again!
Maybe Alluh can write how in December Arlen will announce the Democratic party is not the party he once knew and can run as an independent…with his great war-chest! Keep hope Alive!
OK Sorry for the interuption, please return to scheduled programming drumbeat from Hot Air…
“Conservatives can’t win!” “Conservatives can’t win!”

Maybe all that is true; or maybe AP is as innocent as a babe in the woods just trying to generate “controversy” solely for its own sake.
But the bottom line is exactly the same either way. It’s not a coincidence that nearly everyone who’s involved in the media becomes a flaming liberal. That’s just the nature of the beast. When someone spends fifty hours a week telling “man bites dog” stories, he’s doing absolutely nothing but espousing perversity solely for the sake of perversity. At that point it doesn’t matter what he calls himself – or even what he thinks of himself deep down inside in his secret heart of hearts – for all practical purposes he’s a liberal.

I have worked with one very huge name in life the year before he retired. No illusions here about that transitional stage. They are nuts!
What’s interesting to me about this story is Obama. What a training wheels move to have a national news conference welcoming aboard the “Republican.”
Frankly, that was nothing short of sheer stupidity, politically speaking. I could have written this script out before it all unfolded.
Obama, nothing is for free. You cannot undo states making resolutions against the federal encroachment, the tea parties, or the growing connection between the left and the right against various big government positions.
This IS the problem with big government solutions. Welcome to reality.
And one Republican who is losing his own primary isn’t going to change that. Kennedy faced the same challenge, and Bill and Hillary helped him out. He didn’t even know what to do. Look how he repaid him?
You picked the losing hand.
Admit it. Get over it.

That’s what you get when you join the Gang of 58 . . . or is it 59 yet?
When you join a gang, the first thing they make you do is go through some form of running the gauntlet initiation.
Arlen didn’t think this one through, and he’s too old to ever be anything other than a barely tolerated hanger-on.
Not that the characters in this particular drama are in any way comparably endearing — they certainly are not — but I’m reminded just a little bit of Animal House, when brand new pledge Kent Dorfman (later named Flounder by Bluto) was given his first “title,” pledge representative to the social committee.
And we all know what Bluto later told Flounder about “trust” when they wrecked his brothers big car!
Gee . . . makes you wonder what “nickname” the Dems (or the R’s) will end up tagging Specter with?
Mugwump?
Crawfish? (I kind of like that one. It fits, somehow!)
